BuyerMr. Jan de With
Buyer FamilyWith (Witte), Mr. Jan de (II)
Buyer NotesThis is likely to be the prominent Roman Catholic attorney Jan de Witte (Wit, With) II, the son of Jan de Witte I, born about 1572 (see the NOTES to R 21359). Jan de Witte I was 32 when he married Catharina de Rosch Michielsdr. in 1604. When he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606, he was living in the NZ Achterburchwal near the Molsbrug, as his daughter Marya (the daughter of Jan de Witte II) was when she married Wessel Noorman in 1626 (see below) (Van Eeghen, De familie de Witte, Maandblad Amstelodamum 46(1949), pp. 165-167). On 16 September 1617, Jan de Witte I drew up his testament, leaving his library to his sons Lambert and Jan (II) (ibid., p. 165). After the death of his first wife, he remarried with Maria Jansdr. in 1621. He seems to have died shortly thereafter. On 5 December 1612, Jan de Wit I, attorney, attached to the Orphan Chamber, was involved in a dispute concerning Jan and Jacob Braemsz., the children of the wine dealer Pieter Braems of R 31430 (WK 5073/513). If, as appears likely, Jan de Witte I died about 1621, it must have been his son Jan de Witte II, likewise attorney, who assisted his daughter Maria when she was betrothed to Wessel Noorman (of R 29751) on 13 January 1626 (DTB 670/120). In 1631, Jan de Witte (II) paid a tax of 100 f. at which time he was living on the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, p.39, fol. 171v). The son of Jan de Witte (II, possibly III) Michiel married Anna Codde, of an Old Catholic family, on 10 March 1663. She was the granddaughter of Jacob Codde of R 8318. Jan de Witte II was still alive in 1651, when he was considered one of the most eminent Roman Catholics in Amsterdam (Van Eeghen, op. cit. p. 166).

BuyerWessel Noorman
Buyer FamilyNoorman, Wessel
Buyer NotesOn 13 January 1626, Wessel Noorman, from Amsterdam, 25, assisted by his uncle Barent Noorman (of R 30045), living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Marya de Witte, assisted by Mr. Jan de Witte, her father, living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal (DTB 670/120). Jan de Witte, of R 20748, of the present sale, was a prominent R.C. attorney, who lived some time in Utrecht, and owned a large library of books (I. van Eeghen, De familie de Witte, Maandblad Amstelodamum 46(1959), p. 166). Wessel Noorman paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the N.Z. Westerachterburchwal (Kohier, p. 67, fol. 291). This was probably the house of Jan de Witte. On 31 December 1635, Wessel Noorman drew up a procuration to sell a house in the Graf van Robstyn (NA 477, film 6478). On 27 July 1636, Jan Jacobsz., beer distributor, 38, and Sybrant Stam, 23, declared at the request of Wessel Noorman, merchant, that Noorman had come to the house of Jan Jacobsz. where he had met a Scotch merchant who dealt in dried raisins and syrops from Spain (NA 597, fol. 408, Not. Lamberti). Wessel's son Jan Noorman, a lumber dealer, married Maria Sweers, the daughter of the merchant Barent Sweers (see the TEXT of R 361 of Montias1). Barent Sweers (Sweerts) was a pioneer in the trade with the New Netherlands. In 1619, he freighted two ships to the New Netherlands together with Claes Jacobsz. Haringcarspel, Lambert van Tweenhuysen, Samuel Godijn, Jacques Nicquet, Thyman Jacobsz. Hinloopen, Hans Claesz., Aert Vogels, and Hans and Abraham Pelt (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p,334). Jan Noorman contributed 1,000 f. to a joint project of lumber dealers for setting up sawing mills in the vicinity of Amsterdam. He sold his share in the sawing mills to Jan Willemsz., lumber dealer, on 18 June 162 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 696 and 804). Hendrick Sweers, another son of Barent Sweers, married Kathrijna Scholten (Nederlandsche Leeuw 43(1925), col. 368). The son of Jan Noorman and Maria Noorman, named Petrus, became a Jesuit priest in Maastricht (see the TEXT to R 361 of Montias1). The children of Barent Sweers were co-heirs with the painter Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, of the gunpowder merchant Arend van der Putten (Oud Holland 6(1888), p. 138). On the estate of Barent Sweers, see the TEXT to R 361 of Montias1.
