BuyerPieter Nys de voogt
Buyer FamilyNys (Nijs), Pieter (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the guardian of the child or children of the late Jan Gerritsz. He would appear to be the father of Anthony (de) Nijs of R 7616. On 15 April 1624, when Anthony Nijs had his son Anthony baptized in the W.K., Pieter Nijs chose as witness to represent him in his stead Daniel Gabry (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.238). Pieter Nijs (II), the son of Anthony Nijs, was the grandson of Pieter Nijs I. He was said to be 45 (thus born about 1628) when he was betrothed to Catharina Smit on 24 November 1673 (ibid. p. 237). In 1636, he went to Rotterdam to study painting with Hendrick Martens (Sorgh). On 20 February 1637, having studied for seven months, he sold a painting to a foreigner for 6 f. (ibid., p.238). For several years, Pieter Nijs II and his friend Casper Homis (see R 29100), also a painter, traveled in the Southern Netherlands and Germany. On 27 November 1669, Jacobus Houstraet, art painter, sold 13 paintings for 250 f. to Pieter Nijs, who may be identical with Pieter Nijs II cited above (Bredius, Künstler-inventare pp. 1313-4). On 24 November 1670, Pieter Nijs II was betrothed to Catharina Smit, widow of the painter Alexander Ruwel. He died on 16 June 1681 (Oud Holland, op.cit. p. 239).
