BuyerDirck Strijcker apotecker
Buyer FamilyStrijcker, Dirck (Pietersz.)
Buyer NotesThe apothecary Dirck Strijcker Pietersz. is conjectured to have been the nephew of the brewer Dirck Dircksz. Strijcker I (he would then have been the son of Dirck Strijcker I's first wife Lijsbeth Willems Braseman). On 13 January 1618, Dirck Strijcker (II), 28 years old, assisted by his father Dirck Strijcker (I), living in the Beuningstraet, was betrothed to Elisabeth Taillers, from Dordrecht, 30 (DTB 422/135). If his age at the time of his betrothal is correct, Dirck Dircksz. Strijcker (II) was only about 16 when he bought several lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606. He was then living in the Gasthuislaan (GAA, 149/92 F 1081). After the death of Elisabeth Taillers, If the date of death of Dirck Dircksz. Strijcker I -- 31 August 1677 -- is correctly given in Elias (Vroedschap p.1153), the individual named Dirck Stricker, living on the Appelmarckt, naer het appelhuijs who was buried on 15 May 1625 and for whom 8 gulden were paid to the Church on his behalf, could neither have been Dirck Dircksz. Strijcker I or II, both of whom are known to have died after 1625. On 10 October 1612, Jan de Bast, Jacob Pietersz. Nachtglas, and Dirck Strijcker, brewers, made a declaration on behalf of the Haarlem brewers. They declared that they had long exercised the brewer's trade in Amsterdam. This Dirck Strijcker was presumably Dirck Dircksz. Strijcker I, who became knight of St. Marco (Elias, loc. cit. and Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 13). Dirck Strijcker II, besides being an apothecary, was also bode op Keulen in 1627 (Elias, loc. cit. p.1153). On 9 May 1628, Dirck Stryker, apothecary, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his two children, Thomas, 9, and Reynier, 7, whose late mother was Lysbeth Allerts (Taillers), were entitled to 1,800 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 14 January 1629, he remarried with Agnietgen Dircks Ruystens (Elias, ibid.) He paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 13v). It is not known to which branch of the Strijcker family, the individual named Dirck Strijcker who was buried in the O.K. on 17 March 1631 belonged (DTB 1054/60). In any case, he cannot be identical with the apothecary who apparently died on 30 March 1639 (see the TEXT of R 68 of Montias1). For the inventory of Dirck Strijcker and Agniet Ruystens, see INVNO 152 of 18 November 1639. Dirck Strijcker de jonge was the brother of the painter Willem Strijcker, whose bentvogelname was Brasemary (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1254). It may have been Dirck Strijcker I or III who signed the February 1645 petition calling for strict enforcement of the currency regulations of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 89). On 4 August 1662, Dirck Strijcker (I?) was still said to be city secretary, in which case he must have been at least 74 years old (Elias, op.cit. p.1153 and Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.703).

BuyerGillis Hondecoten schilder
Buyer FamilyHondecoten (Hondecoeter), Gillis (de)
Buyer NotesThe painter Gillis de Hondecoeter was born in Antwerp, the second son of Niclaes Jansz. de Hondecoeter. On 22 September 1602, Gillis de Hondecouter, painter, bachelor, living in Utrecht, was married to Maritgen Ghysbrechts (van Heemskerck), spinster, also in Utrecht (Delft, Marriage books, cited in Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 115n.) He moved from Utrecht to Amsterdam, some time between 1608 and 1610 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 339). He had 9 children with Maritgen Ghysbrechts, who ranged from 6 to 25 years of age when she died in 1628. After her death, he appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that the children were entitled to 2,000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789, 29 February 1628, and Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1220). On 2 March 1628, Gillis de Hondecoeter, from Antwerp, widower of Maaike Ghysbrechts, living on the corner of the Oude Glashuysbrugh, was betrothed to Annetge Spieringh, 20, from Amsterdam, assisted by her parents Jacques Spieringh and Margerite Heyndrix, living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 432/587). According to the pre-nuptial contract, signed on 1 March 1628, Jacques (or Jacob) Spieringh was a boormacker (a driller of wells). His death inventory, taken on 8 July 1638, included pumps and other well-drilling equipment, but only 5 untitled paintings, two alabaster slabs, and 5 prints (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. Frans Bruyning). The witnesses to the pre-nuptial contract were Eleasar Swalmius, servant of God's word, and Gerrit Thielmansz. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1220.) The presence of Eleasar Swalmius on this occasion may shed light on the fact that when Jacob Swalmius bought a lot at the Gommer Spranger sale of February 1638, he was said to be tot Hondecoten (R 26412). Cornelia Spieringh, an older sister of Anna Spieringh, married the painter (and later lywaetpacker) Dirck Hermansz. in January 1623 (R 20213.) On 4 December 1631, Marya, the daughter of Gillis van Coetere and Annetje Spierings was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Cornelia Spierings (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 116n.) In 1631, Gillis Hondecoten, living in the Beulingstraet, paid a tax of 5 f. (Kohier, fol. 14vo, p. 5). On 20 February 1634 he assisted his son Abraham, surgeon, upon his betrothal with Ryckge Jansdr., assisted by her grandmother Tryn Laurens. He promised 600 f. for the couple (WK 5073//890, fol. 141). On 20 September 1637, he was one of the five headmen of Amsterdam's Guild of St. Luke along with Arent Wouters., glassmaker, Jan Marcus, bookseller, Dirck Pieters. Bontepaert, also painter, and Pierre Martens, embroidere. All five declared that the glassmaker Jan Ariensz. had successfully passed his master's test and could now keep a separate shop of his own. Abraham Gerritsz., the knecht of the guild (of R 20075) witnessed the declaration. (NA 1420, fol. 35vo, not. Cornrlis Touw). On 24 September 1638, Gillis de Hondekoter, painter, and Annetge Spieringhs passed their testament before Notary Lamberti. They were living in the Kalverstraet next to the Heilige Weg. The following children, still alive, are mentioned: Ghysbert, Janneken, Niclaes, Abraham, Grietgen, Josyntgen, and Ephraim (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1223). Jillis de Hondecoutre, living in the Kalverstraet next to the Kistemackers pant, was buried on 17 October 1638 (ibid.) Some time between 17 October and 9 December of the same year, the children of the artist, fearing that his debts might exceed his assets, requested beneficium inventarii from the Higher Court, which was granted on December 9 (ibid. pp. 1223-4). After his death, Anna Spieringh remarried (on 5 November 1639) with Willem Jansz. Blaeu II, the son of the cartographer and book printer Willem Jansz. Blaeu I of R 301917 (I. van Eeghen, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 64(1972), p. 86).

Buyer[crossed out: Thomas Jacobsz. conchierge] solvit
Buyer FamilyJacobsz., Thomas (Haringh)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Thomas Jacobsz. Haringh, the brother of Gerrit Jacobsz. Haringh, the auctioneer of the Orphan Chamber (of R 27290) was stadsconcierge, in charge of the liquidation of bankrupt estates (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 118 etc.). He occupied this position after the death of his father Jacob Huych Thomasz. in 1617 (INVNO 889). Jacob Huych had invested 1,800 f in V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 149). Thomas Jacobsz. married Cornelia Stricke from Utrecht in 1616. His portrait was etched by Rembrandt in 1655. He was also involved in the sale of Rembrandt's property in 1656, 1658, and 1659 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, pp. 419, 435). He fell into arrears in payments and was virtually bankrupt at the time of his death in 1660 (Van Eeghen, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1969), pp. 74-5.) He is probably identical with Thomas Jacobsz. Honingh, living on the Nieuwendijck, who paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 42vo, p. 11). On 6 March 1634, Dieuwer Cornelis, widow of Pieter Deyts, statsbode, declared that she was pledging her wages on behalf of Thomas Jacobsz. for various merchandise that she had bought, evidently on credit, in the city service (stadtdients) (NA 751, film 5178, fol. 342, Not. Pr. van Perssen).
