Buyer FamilyValckert, Warner van den
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the painter Warner van Valckert, active in Amsterdam from 1619 to 1627. On 11 July 1617, Werner van Valkert and his wife Jannetje Cornelis had their son Cornelis baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Frans Bastiaensz. (DTB 39/465). On 19 November 1619, Werner Valckert and Reijntje Jans had their daughter Geertruyt baptized in the N.K. (DTB 40/65). It is not certain that this Valckert was the painter (who would have prompltly remarried after the death of his first wife).

BuyerBentem in't Schaeck
Buyer FamilySchaeck, Bentem (or Benedictus) in't
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Bentem in't Schaeck, seems to be identical with Bente, later Benedictus, Schaeck, Heer van Anckeveen, 1587-1661, koopman op den Nieuwendijk, who was 26 years of age when he was betrothed to Elisabeth Dircx, 23, on 11 June 1614. He was assisted by his brother Wouter Schaeck, she by her brother Elias Dircksz. (DTB 419/134). Bentem was the son of Jan Woutersz. Schaeck, cloth dealer on the Nieuwendijck in 't Schaeck (1560-1588) and of Geerte Benten (betrothal in Amsterdam on 16 April 1583) Elisabeth's family name was Sperwer (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 252). Isabella van Eeghen gives Bentem's father's name and patronymic as Jan Cornelisz. Schaeck (Maandblad Amstelodamum 45(1958), p. 26). Adriaan Dircksz. Sparwer, who was probably the brother of Elisabeth Dircx, signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Note that in R 20172, Schaeck was said to be living next to the Sperwer. It is likely that Benedictus Schaep who paid a tax of 350 f. in 1631, living on Ossemarckt, was one and the same person (Kohier, fol. 254vo, p. 58). On 6 December 1615, Benedictus Schaeck contributed a Latin poem to the Album Amicorum of the famous fencing master Gerard Thibault (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977), p. 53). Just before his death he replaced Pieter Hasselaer, oud burgomaster of Amsterdam, in a high function in Alkmaar on 5 February 1651 (ibid.) p. 53).

BuyerDavid Vinckeboons
Buyer FamilyVinckeboons, David
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the painter David Vinckeboons, born in Mechelen in 1576, active in Amsterdam from 1591 to 1632. He married Nysgen (Agniesgen) van Loon in 1602 before the aldermen of Leeuwarden. In 1611 he bought a house on the St. Anthonijsbreestraet, which he mortgaged in 1614. His sureties were the famous brass caster (geelgieter) Hans Rogiers van Harelbeke and Paulus Buys from Antwerp (of R 23234) (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 400). He (or his heirs) paid a tax of 10 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the Breestraet (Kohier, fol. 218v). He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He died at the end of 1632 (Briels, ibid.) On 13 January 1633, Angnieta van Loon, assisted by Pieter van der Voorde, her chosen guardian, compared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that her 8 children of minor age, Neeltgen, 23, Tryntgen, 20, Jan, 16, Joseph, 12, David, 10, Mayken, 7, Agnieta, 6, and Arent, 3, whose late father was David Vinckboom, were entitled to the sum of 1000 f. for their father's inheritance. This was considered acceptable by the two uncles of the children, Philips Vinckboom and Pieter Vinckeboom, who were presumably David Vinckboons's brothers (WK 5073/7889). The children of David Vinckboons were brought up in the Catholic religion, to which his wife belonged. He may himself have converted to Catholicism (ibid.) In March 1638 (exact date illegible), Agnietge Loon, widow of David Vinckeboons, made a deposition at the request of Marten van Heuvel, merchant (cited with his brother the maker of gilded leather Willem van Heuvel in the NOTES to R 33337) concerning a debt of 50 f. (NA 952, Not. Baddel). On a declaration made by Nysgen van Loon, 55, and Catherina Vinckboons, 27, on 26 March 1640, concerning Paulus Buys de oude and de jonge, see R 23234.

BuyerHeere Jansz. de vader van de vrou
Buyer FamilyJansz., Heere (Hero)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is said to have been the father of the vrou, thus presumably the father-in-law of Jan Jansz. It would appear that there were two box- or coffin-makers (kistemackers), father and son, who went by the name of Heere (or Hero) Jansz. The father, Heer Jansz. I, had his children baptized between 1616 and 1621. He apparently was married to a woman named Belitgen Wynandts (see below). Given the date of the present inventory and the betrothal record of his son in 1625 (see below), he is the more likely buyer of the two. On 10 March 1616, Heere Jansz. I and his unnamed wife had their daughter Anneken baptized in the Lutheran church in the presence of Arndt Lubbertsz, Gillis Mathijsz, and Trijntge Willems (DTB 138/93). On 7 June 1618, Heer Jansz. I and his wife had their son Jan baptized in the same church in the presence of Arendt Lubbertsz. and Trijntgen Willems (DTB 138/228). On 31 March 1620, the couple had a second son named Jan baptized in the same church in the presence of Yden Jansz., tailor, and Elsken Willems (DTB 138/265). On 19 December 1621, Heer Janssen I, kistemacker, had his son Arnolt baptized in the same church in the presence of Gerrit Jansz. baker and Katelyna Wynants (DTB 138/306). Katelyna Wynants was probably Heere Jansz.'s sister-in-law. The tailor Yden Jansz. and the baker Gerrit Jansz. may have been Heere's brothers. On 15 March 1625, Heer Janssen de jonge (II), kistemacker, from Cradiens (?), living on the Rouwaense Kay, was betrothed to Jannetje Aerens, from Amsterdam, 30, assisted by Claertie Jans, her [...], living in the Warmoesstraet (DTB 763/53). This was presumably the son of Heer Jansz. I. He too had his children baptized in the Lutheran Church. On 3 January 1627, Heere Jansz. II, kistemacker, had his son Arent baptized in the presence of Govert (?) Dircxsen and Femmeken Arents. As usual the wife's name was not cited but the name of the child and the presence of Femmeken Arents both suggest that it was the son and not the father whose child was baptized on this occasion (DTB 139/244). On 18 June 1629, Heere Jansz. II had his son Jacob baptized in the presence of Vroutgen Jacobs and Hilletje Remmers (DTB 139/294). Hero Jansz. I, kistemacker, was still alive on 13 November 1631 when, in his quality as grandfather and guardian of Jannetge Jans, the only daughter left by Jan Hermansz. (sic), his late son, who had shipped out to Batavia as master carpenter, he gave a procuration to a correspondent to collect money earned by his son from the V.O.C. in Zeeland (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). It was probably Heere Jansz. I who paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631, living in the Houttuynen. An entry that stands very close to that for Heeere Jansz. in the same Kohier (probably in the same house) is that for de weduwe van Jan Jans (paid 20 f.) who may very well be the widow of the painter and owner of the goods in the present sale (Kohier, fol. 159vo, p. 37). On 17 November 1639, Heere Jansz. de jonge, coffinmaker, 53, and Adriaen Gerritsz., house carpenter, 54, declared at the request of Jacob Ewoutsz., husband and guardian of Jacqueleth Pieters van Rijck that Heere Jansz. lived on the Rosegracht in the neighborhood of Cathalina van der Hove, the mother of Jacqueleth. The witnesses had heard that a house where Cathalina van der Hove lived on the Rosegracht really belonged to her (Jacqueleth) (NA 1276, Not. Barcman). On 18 October 1632, Hero Jansz. (probably II), kistemacker, named Mr. Jacob van Veen, advocate in The Hague, to collect money due to him from Gerrit Jacobsz. Dijckman (NA 843, fol.361, Not. Hoogeboom). According to De la Fontaine-Verwey, Heere Jansz. (surely the father) was a Mennonite (doopsgesinde) but, after a dispute with the Oude Vlamingen section of that faith, he broke with them and resolved that the only true church was in a man's soul. During the time (1619-1620) when the Remonstrants were being persecuted, he gave refuge to and hid the Remonstrant domine and poet Dirck Rafaelsz. Camphuijsen (who had initially been slated to become a painter and was the uncle of the painter Govert Dircksz. Camphuysen) (De la Fontaine Verwey, Camphuijsen als onderduiker in de Vergulde Sonnewijser, Maandblad Amstelodamum 55(1968), pp. 50-51). If he was indeed a Mennonite, it is curious that he had his children baptized in the Lutheran church. Returning once more to the son, we find that Heere Jansz., coffin maker (kistemacker) (probably II), owed 19 f. 5 st. to the estate of the wine dealer Reynier van Buren (of R 31437) who died in 1635 (NA 568, film 6548, fol. 529 and foll.) Heer Jansz. II (?) passed his testament on 16 July 1636 (NA 642, film 4953, fol. 197). According to a document of 20 November 1637, Reynier Roovaert, framemaker, who made frames for paintings by the dozen work, had worked for four years for the kistemacker (and framemaker ?) Heere Jansz. (II ?) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 177). In the inventory of the late Lambert Jacobsz., painter in Leeuwarden, dated 3 October 1637, there is a debt due by the estate on account of Abraham Lambertsz. (later the painter Abraham van der Tempel) to Jan Pouwels (cloth merchant in Amsterdam with whom Abraham Lambertsz. was apprenticed) and to Heere Jansz., kistenmacker in Amsterdam, for 20 f. According to the same source, based on the archives of the Waterland doopsgesinde community in Amsterdam, Jacob Heeremans, the son of Heere Jansz. and Belitgen Wynandts, was baptized on 25 February 1636 (presumably as an adult) and became a deacon of the community in 1638. This Heere Jansz. is likely to be our buyer. On 16 July 1636, Heere Jansz. (II?) passed his testament (NA 642, fol. 197). Jacob Heeremans, cited above, is also likely to be the husband of Annetje van Gerensteijn, widow of Jacob Heermans, whose inventory (INVNO 382) was taken in 1659 (Wijnman, Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, 1939, p. 47). Finally, we find a Jan Jansz. Heere who, on 20 March 1632, had his mother-in-law insinuate Laurens Coesaert regarding a money claim Claes Houwen had made on him (NA 843, fol. 71, Not. Hoogeboom).

BuyerAdriaen van den Bogaert
Buyer FamilyBogaert, Adriaen (Geurtsz.) van den
Buyer NotesOn 10 November 1614, the painter Michiel van de Sande, living in Utrecht but presently in Amsterdam, gave some one a power-of-attorney to collect money that Adriaen van den Bogaert had borrowed from him in his great need while he (van den Bogaert) was abroad (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1486). On 25 January 1615, Adriaen Geurtsz. (Bogaert), painter, assisted by his father Geurt Jansz.. signed a contract of marriage with Geertgen Pieters, assisted by her mother Maritgen Pieters, and her brothers Pieter Pietersz. and Salomon Pietersz. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 2033). Salomon Pietersz. may be the buyer of R 27404 and the organizer of several Orphan Chamber sales (e.g. INVNO 886.) On 29 January 1615, Arian Gortson Bomgart, from Bergen in Norway, painter, 28 years old, having lived 22 years on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Geertge Pieters, 22, living in the Breestraet, assisted by her mother Mary Pieters (in the Pui, ibid.) On 11 August 1620, his brother Jan Geurtsz. Bogaert (also cited in the NOTES to R 21492), merchant, had a notary summon Gillis Smitsaert (of R 30704), concerning a painting by Frans Floris which Smitsaert had sold Adriaen Geurtsz. Bogaert for 126 f. without specifying that he, Smitsaert, would have it copied first. Jan Geurtsz. demanded that the painting be delivered at once and protested about its being copied (ibid.) On 24 July 1624, Adriaen Geurtsz. and Geertge Pieters passed their testament before notary Lamberti. On 20 January 1628, the inventory of the goods left by Giertge Pieters, wife of Ariaen Geurtsz. Bogaert, schilder, was taken at the request of Syvert Sem (of R 27934) and Jacob Willemsz. Hooft (cited in the NOTES to R 31991), regents of Leproos Huijs. Ariaen Geurtsz. was said to be out of the country. The house, situated in the Breestraet, had fairly prosperous contents, including numerous unattributed paintings and prints (Not. Lambert Lamberti, fol. 15, reproduced in Bredius, ibid., pp. 2030-2032.) On 18 October 1631, Sr. Adriaen van den Bogaert, painter, living in Metz in Germany, issued a procuration on behalf of Jan Geurtsz. Bogaert, his brother, to enable him to collect from Thomas Jacobsz. Haringh, concierge of the Desolate Boedelskamer, alsulcke penningen als geprocedeert syn van de vercochte goederen van hem constituant. This suggests that a bankruptcy sale had been held of his goods by the Kamer (Bredius, ibid., p. 2034). A still life of dead birds signed by Adriaen Geurtsz. Bog[...] was sold by Christie's on 12 December 1998. The dead-painted paintings in his inventory of 1628 represented a variety of subjects (a little temple, a heron, horses and dogs, etc.)

BuyerJacques de Vile schilder
Buyer FamilyVile (Ville), Jacques de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, the painter Jacques de Ville, was born c. 1589 in Amsterdam, son of Gilles de Ville, from Armentieres, and Cathaline de Masuze. His father was a cloth merchant. He studied mathematics and perspective. He painted chiefly genre scenes and still lifes. On 28 February 1613, the notary P. Ruttens recorded the marriage contract of Jacques de Ville, bachelor, assisted by his brother Pierre de Ville and by his neef (nephew or cousin) Pierre du Pont, (of R 20481), with Sara Basse, spinster, accompanied by her father Guillame Basse and her brothers Guillame (probably of R 31003) and Jean Basse (of R 7637). The act took place in the house of Guillame Basse (I) on the Verwersgracht (Oud Holland, 17 (1899), p. 87). On 2 March 1613, Jacques de Ville, painter (crossed out: verwer), 24 years old, was betrothed to Sara Basse, 24, living in the Verwerijen, assisted by her father Guillam de Bassee (DTB 417/45, cited by Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 399). Sara Basse was the sister of Jean Basse (of R 7637); of Willem Basse I, the father of the painter and etcher Willem Basse II (of R 31003), and of Maria Basse (or Bassee), who, in a document of 22 December 1648, was said to be the widow of Martijn Binee and moeder in 't Wale Weeshuys, the orphanage for Walloon protestants. On 7 October 1619 Jacques de Ville, painter, took on Jan Huybertsz., 16 years old, as an apprentice for a period of 6 years. Jan's mother, Anna Jans, wife of Huybert Gerritsz., did not have to pay for the training. At the end of six years, Jan would get new clothes and a mantle (NA 381, fol. 117, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz., cited in Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 78(1933), p. 342). On 1 October 1619, Gerrit Wiggertsz. Duysendaelders (lumber dealer) sold a house to Jacques de Ville for 1500 f., for which the painter agreed to pay 250 f. a year with paintings (Briels, ibid.) On 16 July 1626, Jacques de Ville, painter, had the inventory of the late painter Antonio de Olivera, drawn up. De Ville was said to be the owner of the house that Olivera had died in (in the Rosestraet) and which he was renting from De Ville (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 366). Between 1625 and 1630 (the source does not give the exact date), his name appeared among the buyers of a private lottery, together with those of Michel le Blon (of R 21700), Pieter Quast, Barent van Someren (of INVNO 634), Hans van Solt II (of R 21567), and Pedro Heymbachs (N. de Roever, Rijfelarijen, Oud Holland 4(1886), pp. 193, 195). Jacques de Ville was also a huizenmackelaer (house broker) and art dealer. In 1665, the 75-year old Jacques de Ville declared in a depositon that Jan Basse, son of Willem Basse, had died of the plague many years previously (see R 7637). He died in 1667 (Briels, ibid.) On the dyer, also named Jacques de Ville, see R 532 of Montias1 (INVNO 632).

BuyerAdriaen van Nieulant
Buyer FamilyNieulant, Adriaen van (II)
Buyer NotesThe painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (II) was the son of Adriaen van Nieulandt de oude (I), a dealer in writing pens, and of Gertruyd Loyson, who invested 300 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 180; Van Dillen believed mistakenly that the investment was made by the painter who was only 15 years old at the time.) Adriaen van Nieulandt de jonge was the brother of the painters Jacob van Nieulandt (of R 27331) and Willem (or Guilliam) van Nieulandt (II), who was born about 1584 (see the NOTES to R 31208). On 19 May 1609, Adriaen van Nieuweland, painter, from Antwerp, 22 years old, living in the Pijlsteegh, assisted by his mother Truyken Loyson (also spelled Loijsen), was betrothed to Catelynken Raes Thomasdr., 18, assisted by her father Thomas Raes and her mother Beyken Schepers (in de Kerck) (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p.234.) Between 1611 and 1625, Adriaen van Nieuland and his wife Catryna Raes had 8 children baptized, first in the O.K. (in 1611, 1613) and later in the N.K. These were: Thomas (witnesses Tomas Raes, Gerrit Tybout, and Truiken Loyties grandmother) on 10 July 1611 (Gerrit Tybout was probably the famous fencing master Gerard Thybaut); Abigael (witnesses Robbertij Baudoes of R 28053, Beyken Scheppers, and Janneken Jansdr.) on 14 April 1613; Adriaen (witnesses Katalyne Ras, Daniel van Geel II, probably of R 31393, Carel Hellemans, and Anna Raes) on 11 December 1614; Berber I (witness Isaack van Conincxloo of R 19464) on 12 June 1618; Salomon I (witness Margrieta Bartolotti) on 30 June 1620; Berber (Barbara) of INVNO 1178 (witnesses Jacob Jansz. Hert and Anne Hustert) on 29 March 1622; Catryna (witness Bernert van Someren of R 20424) on 16 January 1624; Salomon II (witnesses Hendrik Verstegen, Fransoys Kersgieter of R 23624, Anna Hoymans, Paulis van Hillegaert of R 20158) on 18 September 1625 (Oud Holland, loc. cit.); Geertruit (witnesses Isaack Phiman and Beyke Scheepers) on 8 August 1630 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.168n). Hendrick Versteegen was the clockmaker of R 29445 cited below. Margrieta Bartolotti was probably the first wife of Johannes de Renialme of R 8201. It is worth noting that Carel Hellemans and Daniel van Geel (II) (of R 31393), who were witnesses to the baptisms of Adriaen van Nieulandt's children, both signed the album amicorum of Gerard Thibault, as did Adriaen van Nieulandt himself (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977). All three may have been pupils of the fencing master. On 15 November 1617, Carlo van Heldewier and Isaack Coijmans (of R 28346, also a signer of Thibaut's Album Amicorum), together with Adriaen Nieulandt, schilder, declared at the request of Daniel van Gele (Daniel van Geel II) (cited above) that, in September of the same year, they had been present in the house of Jacques van Hanswyck (II) when Daniel had bought two paintings from the Antwerp dealer Anthony Goetkint, both painted on copper, originals by Hendrick Steenwijck, now in London. Both were churches in perspective (i.e. interiors), one by day and the other by night (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 166n of Nachträge). On 17 June 1619, Van Nieulandt bought from Mr. Cornelis Sasbout (of R 20992) a lot 30 feet broad on the Heeregracht, south of the house of Aert de Coninck, the jeweler of INVNO 161. On 16 April 1639, he sold this house in the Pijlsteech to his brother-in-law Hendrick Versteegen (of R 29445), the husband of Anna Raes. He had inherited part of the house from Thomas Raes and Baeyken Schepers (Dozy in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis vol.6, pp.48-9). In 1631, Adriaen, who frequently bought and sold houses, was cited as a broker (mackelaer) (Bredius, op. cit., p. 179). On 10 May 1638, a deposition was made at the request of Adriaen van Nieulandt, broker, in which the witness declared that Adriaen van Nieulandt de jonge (III or IV), 17, had been on a ship and lent the Captain and the commissary each 25 f. (NA 696A, film 4982). The young man was Adriaen van Nieulandt's son, probably a second Adriaen (since the first, baptized in 1614, would have been 24 years old by 1638). On 2 July 1652, a marriage contract was signed, on the one hand, by Jan Hendrixsz. Koningh (Coninck), widower of Annetje Jans Pars, and, on the other, by Geertruyt van Nieuland (baptized in 1630). The witnesses were Adriaen van Nieuland, Geertruyt's father; Salomon van Nieuland, notary, her brother; Salomon Coningh (the painter); and Jacob Wayer (Weyer), her brothers-in-law (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.168n). Adriaen van Nieulandt II died in July 1658. On 5 September 1658, Cors Jansz. Buyck, married to Abigael van Nieulant (widow of Salomon Coningh); Jacob Wayer (of INVNO 1178), married to Barbara van Nieulant; Jan Hendrickse Coninck, married to Geertruyt van Nieulant; Maria Boortens, mother and guardian of her minor children procreated by Salomon Nieulant, declared that Adriaen van Nieulant had died a few weeks ago and that his estate was burdened with debts. They requested from the High Court in The Hague that the accounting of the estate be done under benefit of inventory, which was granted to them (ibid.)

BuyerGerrit Lambertsz. beelthouwer
Buyer FamilyLambertsz., Gerrit (van Cuylenburch)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Gerrit Lambertsz., was a sculptor. In 1619, he was cited as the principael knecht of the architect Hendrick de Keyser when Theodorus van Roodenburg visited De Keyser's atelier. He was noted in Copenhagen in 1623. In a W.K. sale of that took place in September 1626 (probably soon after his arrival from Copenhagen), he was said to be living on the Breestraet in Amsterdam (R 23481). He settled in Kampen in 1627 as beeldhouwer en beeldsnijder. He soon afterwards assumed the function of city sculptor (stadtsteenhouwer) in neighboring Zwolle. Lambert Gerritsz. died on 22 March 1657 (J. Verbeek, Johannes van Cuylenburch en zijn vader Gerrit Lambertsz Oud Holland 70(1955), pp. 76-7). A sculpture connected with the dollhuys (with four figures of apparently demented people) attributed to Gerrit Lambertsz. is conserved in the Rijksmuseum. On 17 June 1637, Trijntje Pieters, sick in bed, wife of Gerrit Lambertsz., mason, named Gerrit Lambertsz. as her universal heir (NA 770, fol. 667, Not. Verhey). His son Jan Gerritsz. van Cuylenborgh was a painter who imitated Ter Borch's genre paintings. On 11 December 1655, Joannes Cuijlenborch, the son of Gerrit Lambers Cuijlenborch, was betrothed to Trientien Michiels in the Groote Kerck of Zwolle (Verbeek, op.cit. p.67). Various children were born of this marriage in 1656, 1657, 1659, and 1661 (Verbeek, loc.cit.)

Buyer NotesThe buyer, Cornelis van den Block(e), was a sculptor, born circa 1569. He was living in the St. Anthonijssluijs naest de swarten os in 1606 when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 48/24 F 378). He appraised some sculptures or carvings made for a ship in 1624 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 525.) He was born in Mechelen, the son of Philips vanden Blocke. He was married first to Jacomijntje Pieters, then, in 1625, to Grietie Willems. He died in 1629 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 74). On 11 February 1630, Grietgen Willems, assisted by Gerrit Jacobsz. Haringh, her chosen guardian, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that her son Philips, whose father was Cornelis van Block, beeldsnyder, was entitled to 57 f. for his father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). BuyerSalomon Savrij plaatsnijder
Buyer FamilySavery, Salomon
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Salomon Savrij or Savery, was an engraver and painter, born in Amsterdam, the son of Jacob Savery I and the brother of Hans Savery II (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 380). On 6 January 1616, Salomon Savrij, plaetsnijder, 22 years of age, living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by Roelandt Saverij, his uncle, was betrothed to Maryken Panten, assisted by her mother Martijntje van Ede (DTB 667/222). Mayke Panten was a daughter of the Brugge school master Lieven Panten, with whom Jacob Savery I was on friendly terms (Briels, ibid.) On 3 March 1639, Salomon Savery, plate engraver, 45, declared at the request of Cornelis de Bruyn, merchant (of R 22516), that in the year 1638, he had seen in Utrecht in the house of Roelant Savery an account book where the affairs (zaken) of De Bruyn and Savery were recorded. He had given the book to his brother Hans Savery (A. Bredius in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p. 260). On 15 October 1652, Salomon Savery, plate engraver, and his wife Maeyken Pantens (sickly, lying in bed) drew up their testament. They declared that their son Jacob Savery, married to Cathalyntje van Bylaert, had already obtained 600 f. from them (out of 2,000 f. that they had promised in the marriage contract). The testators left their linen and lace business to their five daughters Cathryntje, Annetje, Hester, Susanna and Abigael Savery. Hendrick van Aelst and Wilhelmus D. Baudoes were witnesses (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.75). Maeyke Panten died on 30 October 1652. Salomon Savery became a member of the book dealers' guild in 1664. He died soon after 21 February 1678 (Bredius, loc. cit.) Another daughter of Salomon Savery named Martyntje was 24 when she betrothed to Mathijs Balen, from Dordrecht, retail merchant (and chronicler of Dordrecht, widower of Steyntje Lambrechts, on 24 March 1644 (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.76). Hester Savery, one of the five daughters who inherited the linen and lace shop, was 24 when she was betrothed to Jan Theunissen Keyser, from Rotterdam, neurenbergier (retail seller of ironware), 22, assisted by his mother Abigael de Bruyn, living in Rotterdam, on 30 November 1652. She was assisted by her father Salomon Savery and lived in the Nieuwstraet (ibid). On 19 December 1670, Susanna Savry, from Amsterdam, 38, was betrothed to Cornelis van der Helm, from Haarlem (ibid. p.77) Abigael Savery left the Reformed (Calvinist) church to join the Swedish Lutheran (ibid.) She was 28 when she was betrothed to Pieter Pieterse Lodwycx, from Copenhagen, 30, on 10 October 1669 (ibid.)

BuyerAlbert Hendricksz. steenhower over 't [blauewe ?] huijs
Buyer FamilyHendricksz., Albert
Buyer NotesOn 4 June 1611, Albrecht Henricx, from Coesvelt, living on the Gelderse Kaij, was betrothed to Dirckgen Daniels, from Leyden, and living there (DTB 762a/291). Albert Hendricksz. was a sculptor (later a stone dealer). On 5 December 1618, Meynert Jansz., tax master for stones and other bulk wares, summoned him, along with other dealers and sculptors, to declare his stock. He said he had on hand 13 pairs of posts (probably for hearths) (NA 381, fol. 542). In a sale of 1629, he was said to be living on the Prinsengracht across the Blomgracht (R 23928). He does not seem to have been recorded in the 1631 Kohier. His house was read by Bredius as 't weeuma huijs. It is likely to be 't blaeuwe huijs. On 13 February 1636, Albert Henricx, steenhower, 50, made a deposition at the request of Jan Jochumsz. Pol, lumber dealer, concerning the building of a house for which the building stone had not been paid (NA 695A. omslag 71, film 4981). The death inventory of Albert Hendricksz., stone dealer, was taken on 6 March 1637. One of the heirs was his daughter Agnietgen Alberts (NA 1004, film 1233, Not. Coren). On Agnietgen Alberts, see the NOTES to R 24934. On 17 October 1640, Pieter Jansz. Blauwenhaen (of R 37242) and Jan ten Burgh appeared before the Orphan Chamber as guardians of Neeltgen, 13, Dirck, 9, Jacob, 6, and Andries, 3, the (minor) children left by Albert Heyndrix, steenhower, and Dirckge Daniels, and declared that the children were entitled to an obligation with the face value of 1,200 f. and another for 2,600 f. which was in the custody of the guardians, and half of a house in Leiden (WK 5073/789).

BuyerDirck Pietersz. in te Bontepaert
Buyer FamilyBontepaert, Dirck Pietersz. (Wittepaert, Bontepaert)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Dirck Pietersz. (int) Bontepaert, was the painter, born in Amsterdam in 1578 and active in the city from 1607 (when he bought drawings at the auction of Gillis van Coninxloo). He may be identical with Mr. Dirck Pietersz., living on the Cingel, who paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631 (Kohier fol. 14vo, p.5). His genealogy can be traced from the following declaration. On or about 26 June 1636, Dirck Pietersz. Wittepaert, as husband and guardian of Truijtje Pieters, the daughter left by Pieter Pietersz. (I of R 31777), and Pieter de Riemer, as the child of Lyntge Pieters, all descendant children (voorsate kinderen) of Pieter Aertsz., alias Oude Lange Pier, declared that Pieter Dircksz. de Lange, who was a son of Dirck Pietersz., also a son of Pieter Aertsz., had long been abroad. It was not known whether he was dead or alive. His share in the inheritance (from Pieter Aertsen ?) was in jeopardy (NA 597, fol. 205, Not. Lamberti). Dirck Pietersz. married Truijtje Pieters in July 1603. Dirck Pietersz. de Lange is most probably identical with Dirck Pietersz. Santvoort, who was portrayed by Dirck Barendsz. in 1586 as a shooter in the company of Egbert Vinck (Oud Holland 15(1897), p.135). He was the father of Abraham Dircksz. Santvoort, painter in Breda, of Dirck Dircksz. Santvoort, painter in Amsterdam (1610-1680), of Pieter Dircksz. Bontepaert/Santvoort, painter in Amsterdam (of R 23103), and of Pieternella Santvoort, who married Aert Dircxsz., wine dealer in Amsterdam, in 1655 (with thanks to S. Middelhoek for information on the Bontepaert/Santvoort family).

BuyerJan Tievaert
Buyer FamilyTievaert (Thivaert, Thijvaert, Tivart, Tiewaert), Jan
Buyer NotesThere were three generations of Jan Thivaert, designated I, II, and III. Jan Thivaert I, the father of the buyer Jan Thivaert II, lived in Amsterdam. He was married to Antoinette Gourdin. Jan Thivaert II was born in Wesel about 1575 (the information on Jan Thivaert I and on the birth place and date of Jan Thivaert II was kindly supplied by Marten Jan Bok). In all documents found until now, he is called suickerbacker (sugar baker or refiner), but he seems to have been an art dealer as well. It may have been Jan Thivaert II who, in 1618, rented his warehouse, behind his house on the St. Antoniebreestraet, to the Sephardic community to hold meetings of their synagogue. A year later, the community bought a warehouse, next to Jan Thivaert's, to set up their synagogue (Maandblad Amstelodamum 57(1970), p. 211). On a declaration of 1 May 1637 regarding the high rent paid by the Jews for this warehouse, see the NOTES to R 24924. In a deposition made at the request of the headmen of the Guild of St. Lucas in Amsterdam on 8 November 1619, the painters Lucas Luce (of R 20173), 42, Jacques van der Wijen (of R 21322), Hans van Boshuysen, 23, and Jacob van Nieulandt (of R 27331), 25, testified about the sale by Gulliam Wittebrood, from Antwerp, to the school master Mr. Jan Cotereel of 21 paintings. They had heard about this transaction, which apparently contravened guild regulations, from Jan Thijvaert (II), sugar refiner, at the stock market (de beurse). (Note that in Van Dillen's transcription of this document in Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 828, Thijvaert's name was mistakenly read as Thibaut). Hans van Boshuysen seems to be identical with the landscape painter Jan Jansz. van Boshuysen who married Susanna Batens in 1616. He inherited a part of the house de Witte Roos on the Heybrugge in 1621 (Oud Holland 8(1890), P. 222). In the same deposition, Jacques van der Wijen declared that he had heard about the sale of paintings for 2,100 f. by Wittebrood to Cootereel, from Hans Broeck, gilder. Broeck said he had helped to carry the paintings to the house of Cootereel. Johannes van Boshuysen stated that he had gone the day before to the house of Hans Broeck and asked about some paintings. Broeck said that Wittepoort had sold a fair number of paintings (een goede partye schilderijen) to Cootereel, among them a painting by Vroem (probably Hendrick Vroom), and he offered to bring him (van Boshuysen) to Cootereel's house to see them. Since the witness (van Boshuysen) did not have time, they had gone to the lodging of Wittebroot in the Conincxstraet and there the witness had asked him (Wittebroot) about two paintings, a vase of flowers and an image of Maria with a wreath of flowers on copper plates. Whereupon Wittebroot had said he had sold them. Asked for how much, he said about 42 f. a piece. Van Boshuysen asked him further about a painting by Bastiaen (Sebastiaen) Francx (Vrancx). Apparently he had not sold that one yet (the document here is illegible). Jacob van Nieulandt declared that Wittebrood had sold eight paintings to Cootereel, which Wittebrood had let him (Van Nieulandt) see (NA 200, film 111, fol. 358vo.) Jan Thivaert II was married, first, to Marij de Nimaij, who was buried on 27 February 1623, 46 years old, leaving 3 children (DTB 1130/2). Marij de Nimaij was most probably the sister of Samuel de Nimaij of R 23590 (see below). On 7 November 1625, Jan Tivaert, widower of Marij de Nime, living on the Pijlsteech, was betrothed to Annetje Jans, from Dulmen, 35, assisted by her [...] Aeffgie Dirx, living on the Boomsloot (DTB 430/301). On 20 July 28, Jan Thijvaert II and his wife Annetje (Jans) Thijvaert had their son Nicolaes baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Nicolas Thijvaert (Jan II's brother), Elssen Fransdr., Barent Jansz., Trijn Lamberts and Jaepje Jans (DTB 6/211). Barent Jansz. may possibly be Barent Jansz. Porceleijn of R 7661. After the death of Jan Thivaert (II), which probably took place in or about 1633, Anne Jans remmaried, first, with Thomas van der Capellen, from Zutphen, merchant on the Breestraet near the St. Anthoniesluijs and then with Jan Jansz. van Dorhout on 17 January 1649 (Elias, ibid.) Bredius in his Künstler-inventare (p. 1595) suggested that Jan Thievaert II may have been the father of Daniel Jansz. Thievaert. This is confirmed by the division of his estate cited below. Daniel Thivaert was 23 years old when he was betrothed to Machtelt Verniers on 2 November 1635. He was assisted by Johannes Victorinus (on whom, see below), she, by her mother Marrij Jans. He lived on the Kiessteech (DTB 443/566). On 13 May 1637, the wife of Trojanis de Magistris, who was responsible for the accounts of various clients, paid 1000 f. to Jan Verniers (probably Machtelt's brother) and Daniel Tivaert as part payment on some obligations in their name (GA Begijnhof no. 408, Groot Rekenboek). Hendrick Thivaert II (of INVNO 524), the son of Jan Thivaert II, was a witness at the baptism of Huijbert, the son of Daniel Thivaert and Machtelt Verniers, on 14 February 1638 (DTB 42/68). Sara de Penijn, the wife of Jan Thivaert III (the son of Jan Tievaert II, see below), was a witness at the baptism of the son of Daniel Thibaert and Machtelt Verniers on 29 December 1639. The other witness was Joost Vernier (7/232). Machtelt Vernier(s) was the daughter of Mary Jans and Huybrecht Vernier(s), who were betrothed on 27 April 1606 (DTB 411/738). Mary Jans was said to be the widow of Hubert Vernier when she assisted her cousin Jan Vernier in his pre-nuptial contract of 7 September 1635 with Aeltgen Aris (NA 772, Not. Verhey). After the death of Daniel Thivaert, Machtelt Verniers remarried with the painter Wichman Kuven on 2 November 1657 (Thieme-Becker, vol. 23, p. 38). Joost Vernier, born in 1622, was the brother of Machtelt Vernier(s). He was betrothed to Maritie Teunis on 11 November 1644 (DTB 461/188). Jan Tijbart (II) was assessed 30 f in the Kohier of 1631 (fol. 13), when he lived on the Singel. A document of 15 December 1631 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 294) shows that Jan Tijvaert II was an art dealer. He had commissioned, and delivered the panels for, 7 paintings from Roelandt Savery in Utrecht. One painting, which was only dead painted, was already in the house of Tijvaert when the deal was cancelled. Savery agreed to complete the painting already in Tijvaert's possession and pay him 33 Flemish pounds (of 6 gulden each) plus 4 gulden for the panels. (Briels spelled the name Tijnart but the Utrecht GA confirms the name as Tijvart. In the document he was also said to be living in Amsterdam.) In 1624, Jan Thivaert de jonge (II) (said to be de jonge because his father Jan Thivaert I was still alive) together with Anthoni Tysz., were named guardians over Augustyn, 16, the son left by the apothecary Francois de Penijn II (of R 27716). They brought in obligations valued at over 4,000 f. for the son's benefit on 24 September 1624 (WK 4073/789). Anthoni Tysz. (Tijsz.) was one of the sons of Hans Thijsz. de oude (of INVNO 690), who sold his house in Antwerp to Rubens in 1611. He was the cousin of Christoffel Thijsz. who, together with Pieter Belten de jonge, sold Rembrandt the house on the Breestraet where the artist would live for many years and who became one of Rembrandt's most persistent creditors. On 8 January 1632, Jan Tievaert de jonge (III), 23, assisted by his father Jan Tievaert de oude (II), was betrothed to Sara de Penijn (II) (DTB 432/3). Sara de Penijn (II) was probably the daughter of Francois de Penijn II (whose putative sister Sara de Penijn I is cited in the NOTES to R 19997). On 18 February 1625, Jan Pauwels Verriet, from Utrecht, was betrothed to Anthonette Thijwaert, from Amsterdam, 24 years old, assisted by Jan Thijwaert (II), her father, and Henri (Jansz.) Thijwaert I and Samuel de Nimay, her uncles, living in the Pijlsteeg (DTB 429/414). On Samuel de Nimay, see R 23590. On 16 November 1630, Henri Tivart II, from Amsterdam, 29 years of age, assisted by his father, Jean Tivaert de oude (II), sugar refiner, living on the Conincxgracht, was betrothed to Geertruyt van Lennip, 16, assisted by her father Wouter van Lennip (DTB 436/209). On Wouter van Lennip, see R 20505. On 24 February 1643, Henry Thievaert II and Geertruijd van Lennip had their daughter Maria baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Isaack Schot (DTB 42/346). According to the notes collected by Marten Jan Bok on the Thivaert family, Henry Thyvaert I, sugar refiner (like his brother Jan), lived in Utrecht. In 1613, he and his wife Jaquemina Claesdr. mortgaged their house on the Neude to benefit their children. On 29 June 1618, the painter Balthasar van der Ast, residing in Utrecht, repudiated the inheritance he had received from his brother Johannes. Henry Thivaert, sugar baker, witnessed the deed (GAU, Not. C. Verduyn, U009a006, fol. 79v-80). Henry Thivaert I died before before 3 February 1632 when his wife Jacomina Nicolaesdr. was called a widow. Henry Thivaert is also known to have had contacts with Ambrosius Bosschaert and with Frederick Schuermans, the father of the poet Anna Maria van Schuerman. Jan Thivaert II died a few months before 1 January 1636 when a division of his estate took place. On that date, Mr. Johan Victorijn and Constant Bourgeois, testamentary guardians over the minor children of Antoinette Thivaert, Herrij (Hendrick II), Jan (III) and Daniel Thivart, for themselves, together with Thomas van der Cappelle, as husband and guardian of Anneken Thivaert, all in this quality heirs, as children, of Jan Thivaert de oude (II), besides Nicolaes Tivart (the deceased's late brother), heir by testament of the same Jan Tivart de oude, ... declared that the estate, with the exception of the half good and bad debts (owed to the estate), amounting to 7,300 f., came to 32,021 f. After deduction of the debts due by the estate (uijtschulden), there remained 20,788 f. Jan Thivart left five children (Jan II, Hendrick II, Antoinette, Daniel, and Anneken) and a widow (Annetge Tiers). The guardian appointed for the children, Constant Bourgeois, was a master glove-maker whose apprentice, Hans Craft van Ditmerschen, had learned the craft with him for three years, according to a certificate of good behavior dated 13 March 1612 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 1933, p. 4). He had his son Jehan Bourgeois apprenticed to the master diamond-cutter Adriaen van Oncen on 23 September 1622 and his other son Gillis Bourgeois to the master-surgeon and barber Jean Prevost for three years. Gillis completed his apprenticeship according to a certificate issued by his master on 6 August 1624 (Van Dillen, op.cit. pp. 465 and 543). The house of the deceased on the Coningsgracht was evaluated at 4,700 f. Antoinette Thivaert's children were slated to receive, for their grandfather's inheritance 1,872 f. and for the inheritance from Nicolaes Tyvart (Thivaert) 234 f. The same sums were due to Herry Tyvart (II), from which must be deducted 72 f. for paintings that he had bought (presumably from his father's collection or stock), plus a case of sugar he had bought from Elias van Ceulen (of R 37031) for 72 f. plus various other debts. Hendrick Thivaert II may also have been at least a part-time art dealer (see INVNO 524 of 19 May 1650). Jan Tyvart (III) was also slated to receive a total sum of 2,106 f. minus 46 f. 5 st. for paintings he had bought, 950 f. he had received from Jacques 't Kindt (the brother-in-law of Pieter Bosch of R 27353), Daniel Tijvaert stood to receive the same 1,872 f. from his father's inheritance plus 234 f. from his share in the inheritance from Nicolaes Thivaert. Among the expenditures of the estate: a banquet after the death of Jan Thivaert (II), which had cost 60 f. 17 st. 8 pen. (NA 597, fol. 206 and foll., Not. Lambert Lamberti). Mr. Johan Victorijn (alias Victorinus), the testamentary guardian of Thivaert's children, was a Remonstrant friend of the poet Joost van den Vondel. He was baptized on 29 May 1589 in the N.K. and married Aefje Dircks, the daughter of Hillegond Martens of R 26960 and of the beer distributor Dirck Stoffelsz. in 1621. He was also the brother-in-law of Jan Elison, the father of the predikant Johannes Elison portrayed by Rembrandt (for the relation, see NA 843, fol. 1115 of 14(?) June 1636, Not. Hoogeboom). He was doctor of both laws and a man of letters on his own (see Wijnman, De Amsterdamse literator Mr. Joannes Victorinus, een Remonstrants Vondelvriend in Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, 1939, passim). Joannes Victorin(us) was the brother-in-law of the predikant Johan Elison who was portrayed by Rembrandt (NA 597, fol. 446, act dated 3 July 1636, Not. Lamberti). Aefje Dircks was apparently a close relative of Annetje Jans, the second wife of Jan Thivaert II (see the betrothal document above).

BuyerHessel Gerritsz. op de Nieuwesijts Burchwal bij de Narms Brug
Buyer FamilyGerritsz., Hessel
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Hessel Gerritsz., is almost certainly the kaertschrijver of that name cited in a document of 1627. He was a mapmaker for both the VOC and WIC (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 622). On 28 April 1607, Hessel Gerritsz. 26 years of age, from Alkmaar, living op 't Water, was betrothed to Geertje Gijsbertsdr., also from Alkmaar, 25 (DTB 660/270). On 10 May 1607 (thus between the betrothal and the marriage acts), Aeltjen, daughter of Hessel Gerritsz. and Geertjen Gysberts, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Aertjen Jansdr. (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.144). A son named Gerrit was baptized on 22 May 1608 and another son of the same name on 20 August 1609. Five other children were baptized in the next nine years (ibid.) At least one of his maps for the W.I.C., representing San Salvador, was published by C.J. Vischer of R 22512 (Kees Zandvliet in unpublished paper on Joan Blaeu sr.. 1999)). On 15 March 1633, the honorable Jacob Jansz. Wyncoop (or Wijncooper ?), guardian over the minor children of Hessel Gerritsz., named Gerrit Jansz., book dealer, to collect debts to the late Hessel Gerritsz. (A. Bredius in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p. 251). On 15 March 1634, Jacob Jansz. wijncooper, declared that the six children left by Hessel Gerritsz., mapmaker, whose mother was Gerritie Gysberts, were entitled to a capital sum of 600 f. (WK 5073/789). After the death of Geertje (or Gerritje) Gijsberts, Hessel Gerritsz. remarried with Aeltje Willems Saskees, the widow of the paper dealer and book seller Dirck Pietersz. Voskuijl (brother of Huich Pietersz. Voskuijl of R 25145). Hessel Gerritsz. was buried in the N.K., coming from the Doelenstraet, on 4 September 1632 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 144). C.J.Zandvliet of the Rijksmuseum argues that the future mapmaker Joannes Vingboons (the brother of Philips Vingboons of R 20143) was probably apprenticed to Hessel Gerritsz. (Joan Blaeu sr., his partner Johannes Vingboons and their approach of the map market, unpublished paper, 1999.)

BuyerAbraham Decker
Buyer FamilyDecker, Abraham (Jansz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer seems to be the painter, art dealer, jeweler (?), and later sworn broker, Abraham Jansz. Decker, the son of the Delft painter Jan Willemsz. Decker. Abraham Jansen Decker acknowledged a debt of 2,100 f. to the painter Ambrosius Bosschaert II, koopman in Middelburg, for a large lot of paintings by various masters, on 14 March 1613 (Bredius, Künstler- inventare, p. 1354). Abraham Jansz. was 30 years old and living on the Raembrugge on the Coningsgracht when, on 28 May 1616, he was betrothed to Susanna Sennepaert, 20, assisted by her father Jacques Sennepaert. She was living on the Nieuwe Houtmarckt (DTB 420/194). Jacques Sennepaert was a silk weaver born in Antwerp. With his wife Rebeca Marmoet, he had their daughter Sara baptized in the N.K. on 18 December 1601 (DTB 38/918). The painter Hendrick (de) Kuijper (Cuijper) was said to be Decker's dienaer (probably his apprentice) in 1616. Decker left him a legacy of 50 f. in his testament, along with 200 f. to Decker's father Jan Willemsz. Decker in Delft (Bredius, op. cit. p. 1355). On 27 December 1618, Abraham Decker and Susanna Sennepaert had their son Jakobus baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lijsbet van Halle (see below) and Hans Sennepaert (also see below) (DTB 5/269). On 4 October 1620, the same couple had their son Abraham baptized in the same church in the presence of Sara and Anthony Sara Sennepaert, the sister of Hans Sennepaert, married the painter Hendrick Cuyper, who died poor shortly before 16 February 1635 (see below). It is not certain whether Hendrick Pietersz. Cuijper who paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631, is identical with the painter (Kohier fol. 192vo, p.44). On 16 February 1635, Sara Senepaert, assisted by her brother Hans Sennepaert (cited above), appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her two children, Claertgen, 2 years old, and Jacob, one year old, whose father was Hendrick Cuyper. Sara Sennepaert brought in 75 f. for the children's share of their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). After the death of his first wife, Decker remarried with Elisabeth van Hallen (cited above) on 16 May 1619 (DTB 423/266). In 1613 Susanna Sennepaert had inherited paintings valued at 3,450 f. from Ambrosius Bosschaert II in Middelburg (ibid. p. 112). This inheritance was clearly related to Decker's debt to Bosschaert cited earlier, but it is not clear how. On 22 June 1623, Franchoys Venant II (of R 31217) made a deposition regarding a loan of 1,000 f. that David Boodt had borrowed from Abraham Decker to lend to an Englishman. Decker, crying and howling, said that the Englishman did not want to give him back the money (ibid. p. 1356). On 3 July 1623, several acts make mention of the diamond trade carried on by Abraham Decker (Bredius, ibid). On 25 September 1624, Abraham Janssen Decker, citizen and painter of Amsterdam, applied for debt relief (beneficie van cessie) from the High Court, alleging bad luck in running up debts (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 49 of Nachträge). On 24 April 1625, he transferred his household goods, valued at 705 f., as security for arrears on rents amounting to f. 565:13:--, due to the advocate Franchoijs de Schot (of INVNO 621). On 30 April of the same year, Susanna Sennepaert, living on the Bredestraet, next to the Pinas (thus presumably next to the painter Jan Pynas), was told that she could use the household goods that her husband had pledged until further notice. The list of 21 paintings valued at 160 f. was signed by Abraham Decker (NA 719, film 5152, Not. P. Carels, cited in Bredius, op. cit. p. 1353-4). Hans Sennepaert, the brother of Sara and, probably, of Susanna Sennepaert, married Annetje Bourgeois. The latter may be identical with Anneken Borgois, the niece of Jacques Boursse II of R 20074 (see the genealogy in Bredius, op.cit. p.123 and in the NOTES to R 20074). The son of Hans Sennepaert and Annetje Bourgeois, named Constant Sennepaert (1625-1703), collected naturalia, paintings, drawings, and prints (J. van der Veen, Wereld binnen handbereik, p. 328.) On 22 December 1626, Abraham Decker had some household goods sold by the Orphan Chamber (no paintings). A debt owed by Abraham Jansz. Decker in the estate of his father recorded on 20 October 1632, some three months after his father's death, shows that the art dealer had also died by this time. An entry among the debts due to the estate for 150 f., owed by one of the heirs, Abraham Jansz. Decker, was for paintings which Decker had sold in France. Due to his death, there was little to expect on that score (Delft, Weeskamer no. 446). Note that Bredius confused Abraham Jansz. Decker with Abraham de Decker of R 33003.
