BuyerAlexander van der Hove
Buyer FamilyHove (Hoeve, Hoeven), Alexander van der
Buyer NotesAlexander van der Hoeve was a silver- and goldsmith. On 19 January 1602, Alexander van der Hoeve (signs van der Hoeven), from Antwerp, goldsmith, 28 years old, living in the Nes, assisted by his brother Felix van der Hoeven, was betrothed to Susanneken Pelletiers, from Antwerp, 19, assisted by her neve Hans Martens (of R 28860) and her nichte Bertyneken Bachers (DTB 410/7). He remarried with Maijken Pas or Pars, who was probably related to the goldsmith Augustijn Pas, on 23 August 1603 (DTB 411/7). In 1606, Alexander van der Houve, living the Nes, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 117/22 F 867). Lucas van der Venne (of R 27635), living in his house, bought a lot for 6 stuivers (117/22 F 868). On 31 March 1623, Jan Lutma. from Embden, goldsmith, 35, having lived two years on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Mayken Roelants, 30, assisted by her mother Mayken Pas and her father Alexander van der Hoven (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.226). Lutma was portrayed in an etching by Rembrandt. Alexander van der Hove , died before before December 1628 when his widow, living in the Nes, made a deposition (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 667). It was again his widow who paid the tax of 50 f. in the 200th penny levy of that year, when she was still living in the Nes on the O.Z. (Kohier, fol. 235vo., p. 54).On 2 February 1639, Maycken Pas drew up her testament. She bequeathed to her son Alexander (II) (born about 1611 and still unmarried) the house de Diamant Ringh on the Nes. To the children of her late daughter Maycken Roelants, procreated by Johannes Lutma, she left half her remaining assets (?). Among the other heirs cited were Sara Roelants, widow of Jacques de Bie; her son Jacob van der Hoeve; and Anna van der Hoeve. She left her son Abraham van der Hoeve (of R 24270) 600 f. Abraham Lutma, the son of her late daughter Maycken Roelandts, married to Johannes Lutma, was to receive 600 f. when he would become of major age. She named Abraham van der Hoeve, Jacob van der Hoeve, and the jeweler Johannes Lutma as executors of her testament (NA 414A, fol. 134 and DTB 446/430). Alexander van der Hoeve I was the brother of the silversmith(?) Felix van der Hoeve, of the painter Valerius van der Hoeve (see R 20019), as well, probably, of the painter Matheus van der Hove (of R 20575).

BuyerNiclaes de Marees in de Halsteech
Buyer FamilyMarees, Niclaes de (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Niclaes de Marees II, was a goldsmith and jeweler. In 1628, he bought (along with David ter Haer of R 18944) pearls from Andries Oliva. In 1631, he summoned Albert Symonsz., also jeweler, to pay him for some diamonds which they had jointly purchased at auction. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 78(1933), pp. 645 and 783.) In the same year, 1631, he paid a tax of 25 f., at which time he lived on the North side of the Halsteech (Kohier, fol. 213, p. 49). Nicolaes de Marez de jonge (who is probably identical with the buyer of this lot), from Embden, 27 years old, was betrothed to Aechgen Martens on 9 July 1622 (DTB 763/102). The buyer cannot be identical with Niclaes de Marees, the son of Jan de Marees de oude, who died in Amsterdam on 22 July 1624 and was married, first, to Dieuwertje van Thessel and, second, to Margareta Segers, the daughter of Bartholomeus Segers and of Janneken Cockeus (Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990), p. 179-80). Since our buyer was called de jonge at the time of his betrothal in 1622, it is quite possible that he was the son of Niclaes (Jansz.) de Marees (I) and of Margarieta Zeegers. On 29 August 1625, Margarieta Zeegers, widow of Nicolaas de Marees (I), sold to Carel van Hoorn, merchant in Amsterdam, paintings for the sum of 325 f., among which was a portrait of Willem Leij (NA 549B, Not. J. Westfrisius, Extracten).

BuyerJacob de Grebber
Buyer FamilyGrebber, Jacob de
Buyer NotesThere were apparently two goldsmiths named Pieter Claesz. de Grebber, one (our buyer), born in Delft about 1586, and the other, the son of Claes Pietersz. de Grebber of Haarlem, born about 1613, who would only have been about 12 years old at the time of this sale. The latter was the nephew of the painter Frans Pietersz. de Grebber (of R 21169) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.776). On 10 October 1615, Jacob Claesz. de Grebber, from Delft, goutsmit, 29 years old, living on the Heeregracht, was betrothed to Digna Thomas, from Antwerp, 32, living on the Dam (DTB 419/235). In the same year, 1615, he and his brother Adriaen de Grebber, divided their father's goldsmith business (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 183). On 26 March 1619, David Finson (the son of Louis Finsonius), painter, 22 years old, declared at the request of Michiel de Fort (of R 21178) that a certain time ago Daniel Evertsen had showed him a little silver plate on which he wished to be portrayed. He added that he had a niece that he also would like to have portrayed. David Finson had done the portraits of both Evertsen and his niece, on separate plates. They had both come to Finson's house many times to sit for their portraits. Later on, Finson had heard that the niece was actually Michiel de Fort's wife (presumably his second wife Hillegond Symons). Whereupon De Fort had had the portraits, which were in Finson's house, sequestered (doen arresteren). Jacob de Grebber, 33, silversmith, declared having made the plates, with a motto (advijs) [engraved] in [on] them (Bredius, Iets over de schilders Louys, David en Pieter Finson, Oud Holland 36(1918), pp. 200-1). On 7 November 1625, Jacob de Grebber appeared before the Orphan Chamber as guardian over Joris, 10, and Herman, 15, the children of Michiel Jorisz. glassmaker, whose mother was Machtelt Hermans (WK 5073/789). Jacob de Grebber paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Bruninghstraet (Kohier, p.4, fol. 10v). On 1 November 1632, Jacob de Grebber, goldsmith, 46, declared at the request of Jacob Benning, that he had gone to the house where Pieter Boudewijnsz., baillu of Amstellandt, had died, regarding an obligation for 1,200 f. that Boudewijnsz. owed Benning (NA 843, fol. 384, Not. Hoogeboom). On 24 November 1633, Carel van der Wyhen (or Wijen, cited in the NOTES to R 21322), the appointed guardian of the three children left by Jacob de Grebber, goldsmith, whose mother was Digna Tomas, brought to the Orphan Chamber an obligation for 2,500 f. for their benefit (WK 5073/789).

BuyerMr. Sasbout
Buyer FamilySasbout, meester (Cornelis)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably Mr. Cornelis Sasbout, from whom the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt rented a house near the Lelysluijs for 210 f. a year on 28 February 1617 and from whom he bought a lot on the Heeregracht on 17 June 1619 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 178 and R 20925). Mr. Sasbout seems to have speculated in lots on the Keisersgracht and on the Heeregracht (see E. van Houten, Grachtenboek, 1962, p. 45). In 1614, he sold to Gillis van den Bogaert the sugar refinery De stad Antwerpen on the Keizersgracht. Van den Bogaert, a sugar refiner active from 1614 to 1655 married Cornelia Reyniers Verspreet (daughter of Reynier Verspreet, cited in the NOTES to R 25311, and of Cornelia Bruijnseels). In 1617 and 1618, Van den Bogaert bought more lots from Cornelis Sasbout in the same location (Poelwijk, In dienste vant suyckerbacken, p. 176). On 25 March 1618, Mr. Cornelis Sasbout and his wife Roelofje van Elst had their son Johannis baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Willem van Rae, Jan Roeloffs, Marijtjen Frans Ruijs (the sister of Weijntge Frans Ruijs of R 32158), and Trijntje Sasbout (DTB 5/244). On 9 April 1623, two citizens of Amsterdam declared at the request of Mr. Cornelis Sasbout, steensnyder (extractor of stones or lumps, usually in the head), that about five years ago he, Mr. Sasbout, had undertaken for four pounds (24 f.) to cut out a stone in a child of 4 or 5 but he had found that the stone was too great and stuck fast and that, if any one attempted to extract it, the child would die, but that Mr. Guillaem Mallet of Leiden had done so successfully two months later (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 78(1933), p. 488). Mr. Sasbout was taxed 20 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the East side of the Ossemarckt (Kohier, fol. 58, p. 253.) On 22 July 1634, Mr. Cornelis Sasbout, from St. Thomas (the island in the Carribean), boeckschrijver (keeper of the books on a ship), widower of Roeloffje van Es, was betrothed to Elisabeth Bogaerts, from Amsterdam, widow of Daniel Secel (1 1/2 years a widow) (DTB 442/318). On 25 July 1634, Mr. Cornelis Sasbout declared before the Orphan Chamber that his son Jan, 14, whose late mother was Roelofgen van Elst, was entitled to 3,000 f. for his mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 16 February 1650, Elisabeth Bogaert (signed Boghers), widow of Mr. Cornelis Sasbout, drew up a procuration to collect money in Middelburgh (NA 1818, film 2083). Elysabeth Boogaerts was one of the 14 soap boilers who, on 6 June 1630, agreed not to buy potash with a tara content in excess of 7 percent (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933),p. 711). It is not certain whether the soap boiler Elysabeth Boogaerts is the same woman as married Cornelis Sasabout in 1634.

BuyerSichem
Buyer FamilySichem (Christoffel) (II ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is presumed to be Christoffel Sichem II, the son of Christoffel de oude, who was also an engraver, and of Kattelijn van Sichem. However, he may be Jacob Sichem, mentioned in R 21145. This is less probable inasmuch as Christoffel (van) Sichem is specifically mentioned in R 20946. Christoffel Sichem de jonge was born in Basel around 1582. He was living on the Monkelbaanstoren when he was married to Anneken Lunden, assisted by her mother Janneken Sautyn, on 23 March 1613, on which occasion he was assisted by his father Christoffel Sichem de oude (R 504 of Montias1) (DTB 417/60). He then married Anna Glimmer. After her death, he appeared before the Orphan Chamber on 10 September 1613 to proclaim his betrothal to Marritie Joosten. He was then living on the Wolfstraet. According to the act of betrothal, dated the same day, Marritie Joosten was said to come from Lochem (DTB 441/219). On 15 December 1636, Margarete van Hollaer, widow of Hans Ranson (cloth merchant), sold to Christoffel van Sichem (probably II) a garden and two small houses in the Nieuwe Weespat, outside the St. Anthonispoort, next to the house of the heirs of Paulus de Riemens on the East side, for 1,500 f. (NA 772, film 5192, Not. Verhey). Christoffel van Sichem (II) was buried in the W.K. on 22 April 1638 (DTB 1100A/28). On his son, the engraver Christoffel van Sichem III, see the NOTES to R 26143. On Hans van Ransen and his widow Margarete van Hollaer, see INVNO 1247.

BuyerHans Lethoor
Buyer FamilyLethoor, Hans (I)
Buyer NotesOn 1 February 1597, Hans Lethoor I, from Antwerp, was betrothed to Adriaenken Broens, living in Den Haag (DTB 762A/87). On 12 March 1602, Hans le Toor and Adriaenken Broens had their daughter Neeltgen baptized in the N.K. in the presence of mynheer Cornelis Gulpin (?) and Martyn du Gardyn (DTB 38/935). Martyn du Gardyn of R 25525 was the husband of Police le Thoor, the presumed sister of Hans le Thoor. Hans Lethoor or Le Toor I bought the citizenship of Amsterdam on 27 March 1596 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse goud- en silversmeden, Bijdragen tot de geschiedenis, 54(1971), p. 131.) In 1618, Johan (Hans) Letoir (Lethoor) I was an art dealer who was in business with Rensselaer van Hasselt. In 1618, he bought at the house of the painter Abraham Vinck two paintings by Louis Finson (Ludovicus Finsonius), the Massacre of the Innocents and the Four Elements. (Louis Finson was then living in Vinck's house, as Bredius showed in a number of documents published in Oud Holland 36(1918), pp.198-9). In the same year he heard that there were eight fine paintings available for sale in Brussels that came from the Cabinet of Emperor Rudolph, five by Spranger and three by Hans van Aachen. On his dispute concerning the Finsonius paintings and the attempted sale of the paintings to the King of Denmark, see the TEXT of R 424 of Montias1. On 2 August 1627, Hans le Thor I sold a number of paintings, jewelry, and other things that he had pledged in 1625 as security for a loan of 1,029 Flemish pounds, 4 schellingen and 4 groot from Marten du Gardijn, married to Police (or Paulina) le Thoor, who was his presumed sister (INVNO 518, see the TEXT of R 424 of Montias1). Hans le Thoor II, the son of Hans le Thoor I, was born in Norkopping or Antwerp in 1601. He was betrothed to Margareta Itoelsdr. (Ismaelsdr.) Pluvier, from Leeuwarden, on 18 September 1625 (kindly communicated by one of the descendents). On 1 July 1637, the merchant Floris Visscher insinuated Johan Lethor, likewise merchant, over some letters of exchange that were shown to him (NA 1466, film 1556). Hans le Thoor II bought pearls (but no art) at the sale of Hans van Maerlen of 30 September 1637 (INVNO 270). On an incident that befell Jean le Thor II, see the NOTES to R 31402. Jean le Thor became a citizen of Amsterdam on 10 July 1643 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). On 25 February 1650, Johannes le Thor (II), from Amsterdam, widower of Margaretha Itoelsdr. (Ismaels), living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Susanna Tilens (Tiellens), assisted by her mother Susanna Lestevenon, living on the Warmoesstraet (DTB 467/47). She was the daughter of Jan Tiellens, silk cloth dealer (1584-1633). The death inventory of Jan le Thor, director of the W.I.C. in Amsterdam, and of his first wife Margareta Itoels (?) was taken on 26 July 1653. Among his heirs was his oldest daughter Adriana and a son named Timotheus. Adriana le Thor exchanged complimentary poems with Constantijn Huygens. The inventory was signed by the painter Willem Kalf, who was said to be a cousin of the deceased. He was actually the husband of Cornelia Pluvier, the daughter of Samuel Pluvier and of Sofia Jacobs. She was the niece of Margareta Itoels (Ismaels) Pluvier (NA 1303, film 1350, Not. H. Schaef, fol. 213 and foll.) Wilhelm Kalff, from Rotterdam, was married to Cornelia Pluvier on 3 November 1619. On the multi-talented Cornelia Pluvier, who, among other things, was a fine calligrapher, see H.E. van Gelder, Aantekeningen over Willem Kalf en Cornelia Pluvier, Oud Holland 59(1642), pp. 37-46. Another daughter of Johannes le Thor II and Margaretha Pluvier, named Margaretha le Thor, married Jean de la Fontaine, who died in Amsterdam on 11 November 1678. She died before 1678. Several men were named Jean de la Fontaine (or Fonteijn) lived about this time in Amsterdam (see the NOTES to R 8357).

BuyerAdolff Donckelberch
Buyer FamilyDonckelberch (Forckenburg?), Adolff (Adolf)
Buyer NotesThe only available information on Adolf Donckelberch consists in the baptisms of his children. On 24 January 1616, Olof Donckerberch and Eva Jans had their son Isaack baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Anna Sicx (DTB 39/410). On 23 February 1620, Adolff Donckerpaart (sic) and Eva Jans had their son Jacob baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Anneken Soesdr. (Soest? Sicx?) (DTB 5/309). On 16 January 1624, Hadel (sic) Donckelberch and Eva Jans had their child Luycas baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Geertruyt Beeck (DTB 40/237). On 28 October 1629, Adolf Donckelberch and Eva Jans had another child, named Pieter, baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Ryckgen Dierx Brecht and of Pieter and Pauwels Jansz. He is possibly identical with Adolph van Forckenberch, who signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628 and who, when he baptized his child Hermken in the Remonstrant Church on 26 March 1634, was married to Margreta Valcx (his second wife?), the sister of Jacob Valcksz. of R 22128 (DTB 301). He was the brother of Anneken van Vorckenbeeck, married to Gerrit Coster, maker of cannon shot, with whom they had three children, Willem, 13, Assuerus, 12, and Ermtgen, 10, by the time Coster died in 1619; the children were to inherit the sum of 7,558 f. (act of 3 September 1619, WK 5073/789). On 31 August 1634, Adolf van Forckenburch, merchant, 46, Jacques Bourse (II), 46 (of R 20074), Eduard Houcx, 32, and Samuel Jacobsz., 22, all three warehouse men (packers) testified at the request of Isaack Soolmans, of R 27398. Forckenburg declared that he had sold to Soolmans 52 ordinary Ossenburg pylacken (a type of coarse woolen cloth) and 2 wolradt oslaegen (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). Adolf van Forckenburch, merchant, was said to be 48 in a declaration of 1 June 1635, when he declared at the request of the children of Gasper van Wickevoort I (of R 21502) that he had sold cloth to Isaack Soolmans of R 27398 (NA 772, Not. Verhey). He may have remarried one more time with Swaantje Wessels who was said to be his widow in 1670 (at which time she owned various parcels of land on the Heerengracht between the Utrechtsestraet and the Amstel (Maandblad Amstelodamum 20(1933), p.54) Adolf van Forckenburg (I) was almost certainly related to Paulus van Fo(r)ckenburg (of R 26234), but the relation could not be ascertained.

BuyerJan Lammers goutsmit op 't Binnenslot
Buyer FamilyLammers (Lamberts), Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jan Lammers or Lamberts, was a goldsmith. He helped a young man to set up a goldsmith's shop in his mother's house in 1624. In this document, he is called coopman but his designation as a goldsmith in the present auction and the setting up of a goldsmith's shop in the document suggest that the two individuals are one and the same (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 546). He may also be identical with Jan Lambertsz., signet carver (wapensnijder), son of the carpenter Lambert Jansz., who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 17 December 1648 (Obreen, Archief 2(1879-1880), p.167). In 1631, Jan Lambertsz. paid a tax of 30 f., at which time he lived on the Engelse Kaij. Another Jan Lambertsz., living on the West side of the Keisersgracht, paid a tax of 40 f. (Kohier, fol. 110, p. 26 and fol. 296, p.68). One of the investors in V.O.C., named Egbert Stock also bought 600 f. worth of shares for my wife's sister's son Jan Lambertsz. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p.156). Jan Lammers seems to have been the brother of Anthony Lambrechtsz. of R 21004.

Pieter ter Haer, silversmith, paid a tax of 15 f.in 1631, at which time he lived on the Hoochstraert, North side (Kohier, p.41, fol. 176vo.). He was apparently renting a house near the Doelenslijp at this time (act of 23 February 1631) from Philips Fonteijn of R 20084 and Dirck van Millegem of R 24343 (NA 910, Not. Pieter Eyloff). It appears likely that Pieter, Albert, David, and Abraham ter Haer were all brothers, while Adriaen ter Haer was their nephew. On 5 October 1635, Pieter ter Haer, jeweler, 42 years old, swore at the request of Jacob de Cerf (of R 37037), silk cloth merchant, that the petitioner (De Cerf) had come to him last July with a string of pearls and various sorts of pearls costing 10 st. per pearl (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). He was still 42 when, on 8 October 1636, he and Bastiaen Jansz. caffa worker, 35, declared at the request of Lucas Jansz., goldsmith, that Jacques Lucas had gone to the East Indies (NA 596, Not. Lambert Lamberti). An individual who cannot be identical with the silversmith, also named Pieter ter Haer, was buried in the N.K. on 2 January 1631 (DTB 1054/58vo).

BuyerAbraham ter Haer
Buyer FamilyHaer, Abraham ter
Buyer NotesOn 30 November 1613, Abraham ter Haer, from Norwitz (Norwich), goudwercker, 24, living in the Graevenstraetken, assisted by his brother David ter Haer, was betrothed to Jannetje Pieters, 20, living op den Dam, assisted by her petemoeye Geriet Jansdr. (DTB 417/282). On 17 December the couple had their child Abraham baptized in the N.K. According to a document of 18 October 1623, Louis de Baudoes (of R 26665), Abraham ter Haer, and two other silversmiths declared in a deposition that, 14 or 15 months prior to this date, an English knecht, who said he came from Dordrecht, offered for sale some silver wire (zilverdraad) that contained more copper than silver (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 506). Abraham ter Haer paid a tax of 15 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the West side of the Achterburchwal (Kohier, p.63, fol. 275). On 30 June 1634, Abraham ter Haer and Pieter Adriaensz. came to an agreement over a dispute which had been subjected to the arbitration of the city secretary David Jacobsz. de Wilde. Pieter Adriaensz. was to turn over 454 f. to Abraham ter Haer. It was agreed that Pieter Adriaensz., who was apparently also a silversmith, would not be allowed to sell silverware on the North side of the Beurse, as determined by the map of Cornelis Danckertsz. (I) David Cornelisz. ter Haer (Abraham's brother) signed the agreement (NA 911, film 1147, Not. Verheij). On 8 May 1639, Jannitje Pieters, wife of Abraham ter Haer, 45, testified at the request of Cornelis Willemsz. Amelandt that the latter had behaved in a respectable manner (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. Fr. Bruyning).

BuyerThomas Pietersz. de swager coeckebacker
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Thomas
Buyer NotesThe buyer, the swager of Christoffel Sichem, was a cake baker. It is very probable that he is identical with the individual of that name who bought many lots at Orphan Chamber auctions and served as an oplegger (stacking up the goods sold) for these auctions. In R 25442, for instance, Thomas Pietersz. was said to be die het goet opleytt. On 4 October 1626, Tomas Pietersz., bachelor, 26, dealer in paintings, signed a prenuptial contract with Aaltje Jans Kaan, heiress of her father Jan Andriess Kaan (of INVNO 710, the father of Jan Jansz. Kaen of R 29717) (NA 720, fol. 342, cited in I.E. van Eeghen, Het Amsterdamse Sint Lucasgilde in de 17de eeuw, Jaarboek Amstelodamum, 61 (1969), p. 86). It is not known whether the (former ?) coeckebacker and oplegger or some other individual is identical with Thomas Pietersz. who paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Nieuwen Dijck (Kohier, fol. 27v., p. 7).

BuyerAdriaen van Breen bij de Boshuijs
Buyer FamilyBreen, Adriaen van
Buyer NotesOn 2 January 1621, Arent van Breen, from Middelburgh, 30, goldsmith, assisted by Sara Frank, his mother, living on the St. Annedwarsstraet, was betrothed to Josijntje de Hemel, 22, assisted by Maria Brunel, her mother, living on the Breestraet (DTB 425/181). Her father, Lucas de Hemel, died before 24 May 1630, when Maria Brunel was called his widow (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On that date, Hendrick Storm (of R 21283) sold a number of houses and lots on the Bloemgracht to Maria Brunel (Maandblad Amstelodamum 48(1961), p. 163). Josijntje de Hemel was Roman Catholic, whereas Adriaen van Breen was Reformed. In 1634 and 1635, the jeweler Adriaen van Breen was summoned by the Kerkeraad of the Reformed Church for allowing his children to be brought up as Roman Catholics, owing to his Popish wife. He got away with just an admonition after he promised that he would allow his next children to be baptized by a predikant (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, Hilversum, 1990, p. 158). Adriaen van Breen paid a tax of 35 f. in 1631, at which time he lived in the Hooghstraet (Kohier, fol. 217vo, p. 50). On 8 October 1632, Josina de Hemel appeared before Notary Hoogeboom and promised to free her mother Maria Bruneel, married to (the late?) Arnout van Breen, from a guarantee (borgtochte) she had given on a loan (NA 843). (The late Arnolt van Breen, goldsmith, was cited in an Orphan Chamber document of 27 May 1632 (WK 5073/789)). On 15 March 1636, Adriaen van Breen, merchant and jeweler, 51, declared at the request of the directors of the V.O.C. that he had been shown some very expensive jewels by a Scottish Colonel (NA 413A, fol. 224). On 19 June 1637, Adriaen van Breen, 53 years old, and Willem van Wely of R 21266 made a deposition concerning Servaes de Cocq (or Kock), of R 22072, in which they stated that De Cocq had illegally copied a silver beaker by Paulus van Vianen (NA 415, film 6453, details in Oud Holland 34(1916), pp. 240-1). On 21 April 1638, Jonathan Wielle de jonghe, 22, ready to sail to Brasil, declared at the request of Adriaen van Breen that on 20 April (the preceding day), the lord of Heemstede had come to Van Breen's house to buy a string of pearls. But Van Breen did not know the Heer van Heemstede, so that he, Wielle, had gone to the inn de Drie Moriaenen with the string of pearls where he met Dirck Groen. But he had been given no assignment to do so (NA 696A, film 4982). Adriaen van Breen seems to have remarried. Jacomina Canters, who was buried on 3 April 1669 in the O.K., was said to be the widow of Adriaen van Breen (DTB 1047/169). The boshuijs, near which Adriaen van Breen lived, belonged to the V.O.C. It was situated on the Coeleviersburchwal.
