BuyerMarij Dommers
Buyer FamilyDommers, Marij
Buyer NotesMarij Dommers was probably an an uitdraagster (as suggested also by Hilde van Wijngaarden and Isabella van Eeghen). On 16 August 1602, Antoine Caron, kistemacker (coffin maker, joiner), 23 years old, was betrothed to Marie Dommers, from Antwerp, 16 (?). Both were illiterate (DTB 411/2). On 26 April 1630, Mary Dommers, assisted by Pieter van Berch, her swager and guardian, presented her three children of minor age before the Orphan Chamber (Claes, 12, Sara, 10, and Lysbeth, 8), whose late father was Anthoni Caron, caffawercker, and declared that they were entitled to 300 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). Mary Dommers was probably related to (the sister of ?) the framemaker Harmen Dommer, who attended the same sale (of the framemaker Arent Jansz) on 14 August 1636 (INVNO 836). On 11 December 1635, Herman Dommer, ebony wood worker, xli, Claes Marchusz. Gelas, polisher xl, and Frechit Henricksz. Ruijff, xvii declared at the request of Catharina Willekens, widow of David Stiefmaecker that Dommer had been summoned to the house of the producent (Willekens) to set into its frame a large mirror which had been bought the heer de Voocht, director of the V.O.C. from the producent in The Hague. He (Dommer) had gone to the house and in the presence of Heer Voocht had set it (the mirror) in the frame, had packed the case as it should have been and had it loaded on the barge to The Hague. The mirror should not have been damaged, still less broken. The mirror had fallen and got broken and for this reason was not bestellt (ordered for) (NA 412A). gone to the

BuyerThomas Morois France predicant
Buyer FamilyMorois [Maurois], Thomas II
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a Reformed minister of the Walloon church. He was at first hesitant which faction of the Calvinist church to support but ended up on the side of the Counter-remonstrants (Maandblad Amstelodamum 70(1983), p. 132). He was said to be from Kantelbergh (Canterbury) when he married Rebecca du Pont, 23 years old, in Amsterdam on 10 October 1614. He was apparently the son of Thomas Maurois I and of Marie Fourment; she was the daughter of Pierre du Pont (of R 20481) and of Maria Cologne. He was 28 at the time (thus born circa 1586) (DTB 418/213 and Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 175). He paid a tax of 35 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 7v, p. 3). On 17 September 1636, Marie Fourment, widow of Thomas Maurois (I), sick in bed, referred to an act whereby she had acknowledged some debts that her son Thomas Maurois had contracted vis a vis Jean de Pont. The act is written in French (NA 991, Not. J. Bosch). On 29 June 1637, Thomas Maurois, predicant, bought from Albert Bastiaensz., master horticulturist (mr. tuynman), a garden with a plantage outside the Regulierspoort on the Sprevelspadt (?) for 2,100 f. The high price of the garden suggests that it may have contained expensive tulip bulbs (NA 415, film 6433). He may have died by 1 April 1638 when a sum of 2,500 f., which he had apparently bequeathed to the children of the weaver Adriaen Goverts (de jonge) were deposited in the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/789). In the inventory of Adriaen Goverts (II or III), taken in the Desolate Boedelskamer on 3 March 1661, a painting of the Pope with his cardinals and a copper Vulcan with a pedestal were said to belong to the widow of Thomas Maurois (see R 42847 of INVNO 685). The post-mortem inventory of the late Rebecca du Pont, widow of domine Thomas Mauroijs, was taken on 21 September 1662 (NA 2762, film 2850, Not. Pieter van Buytene). The present painting, the only one that Maurois is known to have bought at Orphan Chamber auction, does not appear among the very numerous (unattributed) paintings in that inventory. However, the painting in the house of Adriaen Govertsz. representing the Pope does appear in it (with the mention of its location in the house of Adriaen Govertsz.) Maria Maurois, the daughter of Thomas Maurois and Rebecca du Pont, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Leonard Slier (Sliger), accompanied by his father Meynert Slycher, by Pieter Seulijns, his uncle (probably of INVNO 1306), and Jacques Boursse (II), his cousin (of R 20074). She was assisted by Rebecca du Pont, her mother, and Joannes Govaertsz., her brother-in-law (NA 988, act 19, Not. J. Bosch). The relation between Anthonij Sliger and Meynert Slycher has not been ascertained. On Joannes Govaerts and Thomas Maurois, see the NOTES to R 7602. Joannes Govaerts was the putative brother of Adriaen Goverts II cited above.
