Buyertot wiens versoecke [crossed out: Hendrick Lambertsz. kunstplaetsnijder]
Buyer FamilyLambertsz., Hendrick (Roghman)
Buyer NotesThe lot was apparently available for purchase by Cornelis de Bruyn of R 22516. Hendrick Lambrechtsz., whose name was crossed out, was the engraver Hendrick Lambertsz. Roghman who was most probably a pupil or apprentice of Herman or Jan Muller (see the document he signed as a witness in R 722.) He married Maria Saverij in 1623. He was the brother-in-law of Cornelis de Bruijn (of the present inventory and of R 22516), who was married to Catharina Saverij. Both Maria and Catharina were daughters of the painter Jacob (or Jacques) Savery and of Trijntgen Kokelen (see Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 376.) On 16 September 1623, Hendrick Lambertsz. (Roghman), 22, was betrothed to Maritje Saavre, 22, no living parents, assisted by her moeije Sara Saavre, living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal (ibid. p. 377). On 16 September 1625, Hendrick Lambertsz. Roghman, plaetsnijder, and Maria Savery, his beloved wife, living in the Runstraet, drew up their testament (A. Bredius in Obreen's Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p. 256). On 22 June 1633, Cornelis de Ridder, living in Utrecht, declared having bought een stuck schilderije wesende een boerekermisse, from Maria Savery, for which she, Maria, had been offered 200 f. previously. The document was signed by Maiken Savery and Roedlandt Savery (ibid.) Roghman and Maijken Savery were the parents of the engravers Geertruyd Roghman (b. 1625), Roelant Roghman (b. 1627), and Magdalena Roghman (b. 1632). On 22 April 1632, Hendrick Roghman witnessed the baptism of Magdaleen, the daughter of Abraham Hijoel (probably the brother of Isaack Hiole of R 23398) and of Magdaleen van der Haeck (DTB 6/335).

BuyerDaniel Mostart
Buyer FamilyMostart, Daniel (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer must be Daniel Mostart II since his father of the same name, married to Bertijntje Bachers, had died in 1615. (Bertijntje, or Bertyneken, Bachers is cited in the NOTES to R 20986). Of Antwerp origin and Reformed, he was born in 1592 and was betrothed on 15 March 1616 to Maria Jansdr. van Beuningen, the sister of the notary Dirck Jansz. van Beuningen (DTB 420/11). Daniel Mostart I invested 1800 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares. Daniel Mostart II was named Amsterdam Town Secretary in 1622. In 1616, he lived on N.Z. Kerckhoff (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 343 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 209). He was said to be the brotherly friend of the substitute sheriff and ex-painter Jan Tengnagel (of R 19457) (Oud Holland 39(1921), p. 13). On 13 January 1638, Agge Ottens, 50, and Gosen Ophuijden, 34, declared at the request of Gerrit van Hattam, venduemeester (auction master) in Vlissinge that about 14 days ago, at the request of Van Hattam, they had asked Mr. Daniel Mostart, city secretary, about the salary earned by the auction masters of the VOC and WIC in Amsterdam when they sold goods in public (by auction). Mostart had answered that the auction masters of the V.O.C. and W,I.C. received 5 percent of the proceeds, which was divided half and half between the auction master and the city secretary, with the provision that both the auction masters and the city secretaries were responsible for the debts of the buyers and must pay the buyers debts if they do not pay. The latter provision applied only to private buyers in the case of the W.I.C. (NA 867, fol. 17, Not. van Zwieten). Mostart died in 1646. His widow Maria Jans van Beuningen died before 6 November 1653 when her death inventory was drawn up (INVNO 1184). Susanna Mostart, the third wife of Gommer Spranger of R 31375, was presumably Daniel Mostart II's sister. The couple had sons named Davidt and Johannes and a daughter named Anna Margriete.

BuyerBartholomeus van Lochem
Buyer FamilyLochem, Bartholomeus van (II)
Buyer NotesOn 19 September 1625, Bartholomes van Lochem, from Amsterdam, 22 years of age, silversmith, assisted by his uncle and guardian Michiel Jansz., living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Grietje Floris, from Amsterdam, 28, assisted by her father Floris Willemsz.(DTB 430/254). He was the son of Bartholomeus van Lochem de oude and the brother of Guilliam van Lochum of INVNO 709. Michiel Jansz. was probably the brother of Hans Jansz., silversmith, who was said to be the uncle of the child of Guillame van Lochum (see the TEXT of R 611 of Montias1). Bartolomeus van Lochem de oude had invested 900 f. in the original subscription to the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 186). He bought one lot for 6 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606, at which time he lived in the Pijlsteeg in de Morgenstarre (27/21 F 207). Grietje Floris, the daughter of Floris Willemsz., seems to have been the sister of Jacob Calaber of R 20263. On 17 November 1626, Bartolomeus van Lochem and Margarita Floris had their child named Bartolomeus (III) baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Michiel Jansz. (Oud Holland 2(1885), p. 160). Floris Willemsz. may have had the family name of Clinckhamer. On 8 December 1632, Arent Corsz. Hooghenacker, living in Leiden, and Floris Willemsz. Clinckhamer drew up a contract whereby Arent Corsz. leased to Clinckhamer 1400 pounds of letter type, fit for printing (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 824).

Buyertot wiens versoeck [crossed out: Abraham de Bruyn of de broeder van den vercoper.]
Buyer FamilyBruyn (Bruijn), Abraham de
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the brother of Cornelis de Bruijn (of R 22516), at whose request the goods in this sale were sold. On 21 March 1632, the eersam Jan Gerritsz. Hooft (one of the creditors of Hendrick Uylenburgh, cited in R 36765) transferred to Abraham de Bruijn, merchant in Amsterdam, the sum of 2860 f. 7 st. that were owed to him by Cornelis de Bruijn, living in Haarlem, the brother of the rendant (Abraham de Bruijn) (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On or about 26 November 1635, various ship documents (about cordage, planks, and other ship equipment) were signed by Abraham de Bruijn, marchand a Amsterdam (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). On 16 January 1636, Sr. Abraham de Bruijn, merchant living in Haarlem, 35 years old, made a declaration at the request of Pieter van der Trille concerning a ship that had gone to Cadis in Spain (NA 695A, film 4981, not. Jan Warnaerts). On 20 May 1637, Abraham de Bruijn, who was again living in Haarlem at the time, insinuated Abraham Wachtendonck who had bought tulip bulbs from him but had failed to take delivery (NA 674, fol. 211vo, Extracten). Twenty days later Abraham de Goyer (of R 24908) also notified Wachtendonck of his failure to take delivery of tulips he, De Goyer, had sold him (NA 919, film 1150). On 30 January 1637, Abraham de Bruijn, merchant in Haarlem, transferred a sum of money he had obtained from London (NA 1428, Not. C. Touw). On 30 March 1645, Abraham de Bruijn, widower of Margriete de la Rue, living op de Schans in Amsterdam, assisted by Cornelis de Bruijn (his brother) and Jan Warnaertsz (notary), was betrothed to Anna Jans, widow of Abraham van der Woestijne (DTB 461/414). On 20 August 1644, Nicolaes Buyck, doctor in medicine, 50, declared at the request of Abraham de Bruijn, merchant in Amsterdam, that a silver cup that he had shown De Bruijn contained a liquor of bezoar stone that could ward off poisons and cure various illnesses (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 10(1912), p. 200).

BuyerSijmen Jacobsz.
Buyer FamilyJacobsz., Sijmen
Buyer NotesIt is possible, but somewhat unlikely, that the buyer is identical with Sijmon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven of R 29366. The latter was still alive in 1631 (when he paid a tax of 200 f. on his wealth), in which year the widow of Symon Jacobsz. paid a tax of 30 f., at which time she lived in the Pijlsteech (Kohier fol. 213vo, p. 49). She may of course have been the widow of still another individual with this name and patronymic. On 29 March 1603, Symon Jacobsz., together with Adriaen van Loosvelt (of R 21192) freighted a ship to Dantzig (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse oostzeehandel 184(1983), p. 130). The buyer may also be identical with Sijmon Jacobsz., brewer in the Hoyberch, who signed a contract with other brewers to set up a mill to grind grain for brewing (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 69(1929), p. 260). A third possibility is that he was Symon Jacobsz. ivory carver (ivoordrayer) whose insolvent inventory, containing many prints, was taken on 20 October 1649 (WK 5072/355).

BuyerAdvocaet Luijt hierbij
Buyer FamilyLuijt, advocaet (Jacob) (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was an attorney. He was the father of Jacob Luijtsen II of R 33763. Advocaet Luijt defended the poet Joost Vondel when he was prosecuted for his tragedy Palamedes in 1625 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 488). The attorney Jacob Luijt was also a poet (Amsterdamsche Minnebeeckje I (1637), pp. 54, 193, cited in Prins, Mattheus Gensnab Tengnagel Jaarboek Amstelodamum 30(1933), p. 197). He is perhaps identical with Jacob Luyten, living on the Appelmarckt, who paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 260vo, p. 60). On 8 December 1640, Mattheus Tengnagel, in the course of an interrogation by the sheriff of Amsterdam, cited a lampoon (schimpdicht) by the poet Jan Vos, in which he had been assisted by by Jacob Luijt and Jan Davelaer. Luijt was apparently a friend of Vos (Prins, op. cit. pp. 197 and 212).

BuyerHendrick Pietersz. Corver opt hoeckgen van den Nysel.
Buyer FamilyCorver, Hendrick Pietersz.
Buyer NotesOn 26 September 1620 Hendrick Pietersz. Corver, buyer of ashes (aschkoper), living in 't Liesdel, was betrothed to Trijntje Jans, 24, assisted by her mother Aelsje Engels (DTB 668/152). On 8 August 1625, spices and other goods, including Spanish soap, were sold at Orphan Chamber auction from the estate of Tryn Jans, widow of Hendrick Pietersen. Some of the buyers at this auction also bought works of art at other Orphan Chamber auctions, including Aert Dircksz. of R 20864, Isaack Hiole of R 23398, Matheus van Alewijn (Halewijn) of R 25399, and Salomon de Vogel of R 7613 (WK 5073/951). Hendrick Corver was probably the brother of Pieter Pietersz. Corver, a soap boiler, born in Emden about 1598, likewise dealer in ashes, frequently referred to in Van Dillen's Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven (e.g. 78(1933), p.662). Dealing in ashes is of course consistent with a soap-boiling occupation. Pieter Pietersz. was married, first, to Effe (Aefgen) Jans, who may have been the sister of Hendrick Pietersz.'s wife, and then to Claesje Cornelis Coerten, the daughter of Cornelis Coerten of R 31049. His daughter Elysabeth, born in Amsterdam about 1630, married Anthoni van Hartochvelt, on 18 April 1649. He was the son of Pieter Barentsz. Hartochvelt and the grandson of Barent Adriaensz., book seller, of R 30608. Trijntgen Jans, the wife of Hendrick Pietersen Korver, was buried on 2 July 1648 (DTB 1046/83). Hendrick Korver was buried in the O.K. on 28 April 1662 (DTB 1047/97).

BuyerMichiel Jansz. wijnvercoper
Buyer FamilyJansz., Michiel (de Voocht)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a wine merchant. In the sale of INVNO 592, dated 4 February 1628, Michiel Jansz. who bought 2 stoven en 1 doos, was said to be living in the Bantamstraet in de Roos. An individual named Michiel Jansz. signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 6 November 1630, Michiel Jansz., wine dealer, was said to be 42 years old (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). Both the wine merchant and the signer of the petition of 1628, may be identical with Michiel Jansz., cited as the guardian of the children of Anthony Claesz. de Jongh I of R 21180 on 18 February 1625. On 28 June 1631, Isaack van Gherven, Jacob de Ghyselaer, Reynier van Buyren, Dirck van Dans, and Michiel Jansz. de Voocht, officers of the winedealers' guild, declared that it had long customary in Amsterdam that, when wine was exported to other cities, the shippers did not have to be shown any receipts from the tax farmers (certifying that the excise had been paid) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 763). On 27 April 1650, the very poor inventory of Michiel Jansz. brandewijnvercoper, was taken. The only art it contained was 1 slecht schilderijtgen and 1 groote kaert (DBK 5072/355, fol. 140). Note that the sale of 23 September resumed on the 27th.

BuyerMr. Mathys Gerritsz. in de Nes
Buyer FamilyGerritsz., Mr. Mathys
Buyer NotesTwo days before this sale Mathys Gerritsz. thuynman bought flower bulbs at the sale of bulbs left by Pieter Pietersz. thuynman (WK 5073/952). It is probable but by no means certain that the two were identical. No individual by this name is recorded in the 1631 Kohier van imposten. However, in R 20555, Mathijs Gerritsz. was said to live next to Pieter de Kock, cleermacker. Pieter de Cock, living on the East side of the Nes (as above), paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 210, p. 48).

BuyerDr. Plemp naest Dircxsz.
Buyer FamilyPlemp, (Cornelis Gijsbrechtsz.), Dr.
Buyer NotesCornelis Gijsbrechtsz. Plemp was doctor in law (rechtsgelerde). He was born in Amsterdam in 1574, the son of Gysbert Pietersz. Plemp, cloth merchant in the Houtsteech (see GAA, lottery, 99/41 F 741). Naest Dircxsz. probably refers to Jan Dircxsz. van Beuningen, the auction's supervising notary, who was presumably Plemp's neighbor. Mr. Cornelis Plemp, living on the Singel, paid a tax of 250 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 10vo, p. 4). He is supposed to have died in 1641 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 77(1985), p. 107), but the death inventory of Cornelis Otsz. Walsburch, apothecary, made at his request (and that of Barend (?) Foppe Plemp and Jan van der Mije) dated about January 1641, suggests that he was still alive. He was then guardian, with the other requiranten, of the children left by Walsburch (NA 1266, fol. 6, Not. Barcman). Plemp was a convinced Roman Catholic, two of whose brothers (Petrus and Timotheus) were Jesuit priests. He was the author of numerous poems, most of them in Latin. He studied music with Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck (of R 27883). Some of his poems praised paintings or prints by Rembrandt (Schwartz, Rembrandt, p. 54 and passim). He was betrothed to Geertge Dobbens, daughter of Ysbrand Dobben and Maria Jacob Nobel, on 3 July 1610. The poet P.C. Hooft wrote an epithalamy on the marriage (Oud Holland, vol. 3(1885), p. 127). He was on very friendly terms with Vondel, whom he probably influenced, both in his work and in his beliefs (his conversion to Roman Catholicism) (J.F.M. Sterk, Oorkonden over Vondel en zijn kring, Bussen, 1918, pp. 110-112). His son, the attorney Mr. Gysbert Plemp, who was also very close to Vondel, signed as witness a declaration made by Joost van den Vondel in 1673 concerning his money troubles, caused by his son's bankruptcy (Sterk, op. cit. pp. 213-4). (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 126.) An entry in the inventory of Catharina Queeckels, the widow of Cornelis van Campen, dated 9 October 1636 (the entry itself being dated 16 October 1636) shows that Cornelis Plemp had paid the estate (?) 620 f. for eight months rent (NA 414A, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) The daughter of Cornelis Plemp, named Aef (Eva), married Jacob Hollesloot (of a well-known R.C. family), born in Amsterdam about 1614, on 1 July 1640. His parents were Jan Claesz. Hollesloot, stone (or brick) dealer, and Mary Jacobs (of INVNO 278) (De Navorscher 92(1950), p.147). p. 67). Another daughter, named Trijn, married Foppe Barendsz., who in turn was the father of Dr. Vopiscus Fortunatus Plempius, professor of medicine in Leuven, and of Pieter Barentsz. Plemp, apothecary (of INVNO 370). Cornelis Gysbrechtsz. Plemp's grandfather was the brother of Dr. Claes Plemp (1525/30-1597). Claes Plemp's daughter Belytgen Claes married Thonis Jansz., apothecary. This couple were the parents of Dr. Johan Fonteyn (of R 7647) and of Barent Fonteyn, apothecary (of R 27380) (Dudok van Heel in Nicolaes Tulp, Amsterdam, 1998, p. 58). On 5 December 1618, Laurens Dobbel Voorst (Dobbelworst), of R 27808, armed with a procuration from Steven Helsingen, counsellor of Utrecht, in the name of the heirs of Pieter Snoeck (I) and of Jannetje Jans (of R 31202), sold to Theunis Jansz. and Cornelis Plomp a house on the Middeldam in Amsterdam on the corner of the Gansoort (NA 381, fol. 552).
