BuyerAnthony Paneel
Buyer FamilyPaneel (Pineel, Pineel), Anthony (I)
Buyer NotesOn 24 April 1637, Jacob Jilles, 48, and Anthony Pineel, 44, sworn brokers, made a declaration at the request of Abraham Felt (Velters? of R 8164) concerning the prices of V.O.C. shares (NA 695B, film 4982). Antonie Penel was a schutter in the Corporalschap of Dirck Theuling in 1639 (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 97). He may have spent some time in the Indies where the portrait of his unnamed daughter was painted (R 4869). On the death inventory of Anthony Pineel or Panneel, dated 1643, seen INVNO 218. The following individual was probably his son. On 9 July 1644, Anthony Pineel, widower of Sybrechje Rotgans, living on the Groen Burchwal, was betrothed to Catharina Romborch, 38, assisted by her mother Hester Mathijs (Matthieu) (DTB 460/481). Hester Matthieu was married to Pieter Romborch of R 29548. On 27 September 1656, Anthonij Panneel de jonge witnessed a deposition of Rembrandt concerning a debt he owed to Daniel Franssen (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 393). Daniel Franssen may be identical with the surgeon Daniel Fransz. who was sued by the painter Francois Dancx who had painted the portrait of his wife. The art dealers Hendrick Ulenburgh (of R 24228) and Guillam de Ville (perhaps of R 33159) had only estimated the portrait 18 f. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p.665). Note that there was a painter named Cristiaen Danx (R 44546).

BuyerMichiel Parent
Pre Lot HeaderDen 19 ditto [february]
Buyer FamilyParent, Michiel
Buyer NotesOn 29 May 1621, Michiel Parent (signs Paren), from Doornik, 20, assisted by his mother Jeanne Saussel, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, was betrothed to Maria Heyns, from Campen, 27, assisted by her mother Anna Smijters and by Mr. Anthony Smijters, her grandfather (DTB 426/94). On 27 December 1624, David Beck went to visit the school master Michiel Parent. While the meal was being prepared he went to the Beurse where he met Anthony Smijters, the grandfather of his (Parent's) wife. Under the Gallery (of the Beurs), Beck and Smijters discussed poetry. Both of them then went to Parent's house where they ate with jongen Bartien (Johannes, the son of Willem Bartges of R 30000) and the latter's wife, Catharina, the daughter of Zacharias Heyns (a well-known publisher and book seller). Since Maria and Catharina Heyns were sisters, Willem Bartges was the brother-in-law of Michiel Parent (David Beck, Spiegel van mijn leven, Haags dagboek 1624, Hilversum, 1993, pp.226 and 248). Miel Parent who paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived in the Spaerpothsteech, may be the same individual (Kohier, fol. 268 vo., p. 61). Michiel Prent, school master, owed f. 12:15:-- to the estate of the jeweler Hans Jansz. (INVNO 456). Michiel Parent was buried in the N.Z.K. on 23 October 1664 (DTB 1068/91). On 3 December 1651, Francisco Pellecoorn, assisted by his nephew Joannes Ruttens, signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Joanna Parent, assisted by her parents Michiel Parent and Maria Heyns (NA 1597, fol. 90, Not. W. Hasen).

BuyerMr. Adam van der Mander voors [bij de Oude Kerck]
Buyer FamilyMander (Mandere), Mr. Adam van der (I)
Buyer NotesAdam van Mandere was associated in trade with Moscovy with the brothers Pieter and Jacques de Walle around 1591. Among his compagnons were Adriaen Sybrecht Faes (the father of Michiel Faes of R 27256), Pieter Barts, Marcus Jacobsz. and Jacques l'Hermite (I), cited in R 21259 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 240. On 8 April 1627, Adam van Mandere, school teacher, granduncle of the children of Karel van Mander II (and brother of the painter and writer Carel van Mander I), together with two sisters of Carel van Mander I and Apelles van Mander, the brother of Carel van Mander II, sued Jhr. Nicolaes Snouckaert in the Hague. Several other documents relating to this suit were published by Bredius (Künstler-inventare, pp. 2163-4). On 1 March 1637, Sr. Martyn Nuijts had notary Jan Warnaerts insinuate Sr. Adam van Mandere de oude. He asked him about his son Adam van Mandere de jonge. The older Van Mander replied that his son had left town and that he didn't know when he would be back and that he left no order to pay a (delinquent) letter of exchange (NA 661, fol. 93vo). The following document refers to Adam van Mander's son. On 6 September 1644, Adam van der Mandere, merchant from Middelburgh, living on the Coningsgracht, assisted by his sister Sara van der Mandere, was betrothed to Maria Coolhaes, from Delft, assisted by her nicht Geertruyt Coolhaes (DTB 461/37). Adam van Mander II became baillu of Zeeland (Delft GA, NA 2003, 1 December 1661). Briels argues that Adam van Mander I is most likely to be the author of the Levensbericht in Van Mander's Schilderboeck (Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 194).
