BuyerJan de Marees Sijmonsz. op de Keysersgraff
Buyer FamilyMarees, Jan Sijmonsz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jan de Marees Symonsz., of Antwerp origin, was probably a cousin of Abraham and Jan Abrahamsz. de Mareez (who lived on the Heeregracht). He invested 1200 f. in V.O.C. shares. He had an account of 4 folios in the Wisselbank with Adriaen Mondekens (of R 29591) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 181). Jan Simon de Marez, 60 years old, coming from the Keysersgracht, was buried in the F.K. on 5 August 1630 (DTB 1130/35). In 1631, the widow of Jan de Mareech Simonsz., paid a tax of 250 f. She was still living on the Keysersgracht (fol. 302, p. 69).

BuyerFranchoijs Cock
Buyer FamilyCock (or Couck), Franchoijs
Buyer NotesIt is probable, but by no means certain, that the buyer was Franchoijs Couck, a merchant and silk cloth dealer, originally from South Netherlands (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 298). Another, less likely possibility is that he was Frans Banninck Cocq, son of the apothecary Jan Jansz. Cock, born in Bremen in 1575, who became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1603. Frans Banning Cocq was of course the Captain of the militia depicted by Rembrandt in the Nightwatch in 1640. He first lived on the Breestraet and then moved to his patrician house de Dolphin on the Singel. His mother, Lysbeth Fransdr. Benningh, died in October 1623 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 406 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 180.)

BuyerGeurt Dircksz.
Buyer FamilyDircksz., Geurt (van Beuningen)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen (1565-1633), who was chosen burgomaster the next year, 1627. In 1586, he was noted as a dealer in dairy products, living on the Kalverstraet. He married, first, Aeltge Appelman (the daughter of Balthasar Simonsz. Appelman) in 1586, then Maritge Pietersdr. Geldsack in 1594, and finally Lysbeth Hendricksdr. in 1607 (who survived him). He was the father of Dirck Geurtsz. (van Beuningen) of R 21904. He died on 14 November 1633. He was one of the founders of the V.O.C., in which he invested 15,000 f. in the first subscription of 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 116). When he was elected to the Raad of Amsterdam in January 1622, he was said to be openly in favor of moderation (with respect to the Remonstrants). He invested in trading enterprises with Andries, Cornelis and Jan Bicker, to buy pepper, spices, Chinese and Persian silk (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, 1970, p.324). Dirck Geurtsz. was taxed 450 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 3vo, p.2; Van Dillen, op. cit. p. 116, and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 340.) Geurt Dircxsen freighted 7 ships between 1601 and 1608 and one ship in 1609 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 600 and 185(1983), p. 12.) The daughter of Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen, named Maria van Beuningen, married Bartholomeus Reael of R 7668. The son of Geurt Dircksz., named Dirck Geurtsz., was involved, on the Remonstrant side, in the melee on the Montelbaansburgwal in 1626 (Van Dillen, Documenten betreffende de politieke en kerkelijke twisten te Amsterdam in Bijdragen en mededeelingen van het Historisch Genootschap Utrecht 59(1938), p. 239.) Another individual named Geurt Dircksz., married to Jannetge Abrahams, baptized a daughter in the Remonstrant Church on 19 February 1634 (after the death of Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen) (DTB 301). It is probably Dirck Geurtsz. van Beuningen who signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Dirck Geurtsz. was the nephew of Jan Dircksz. van Beuningen of R 21007.

BuyerAdam Galoijs bij de Beurs in de Hartoch van Cleef
Buyer FamilyGaloijs, Adam
Buyer NotesAdam Galois, from Rijssel (Lille), 26 years old, living 4 years on the Dam, was betrothed to Geertien Heyndricks from Noorden, 24, on 1 April 1623 (DTB 427/469). The address on the Dam probably coincides with the one give above (near the Beurs in the Hartoch van Cleef). On 2 November 1630, Jacob Veris, broker, Adam Galois, and Dirck Adriaensz. de Vries were named as good men (arbiters) in a dispute over a shipment of 28 tons of hazelnuts, which had been bought by Isaack van Geleyns from Dirck van Heemskerck (NA 847, film 4842, Not. Steyns). Jacob Bartelsz. Veris, broker, made an appearance before the Orphan Chamber on 5 October 1627 (WK 5073/789, fol.32).

BuyerFranchoys Schot de vader van den advocaedt
Buyer FamilySchot, Franchoys (de) (I)
Buyer NotesOn Franchoys de Schot (II), attorney, who caused the paintings in this inventory to be sold, see the TEXT of R 521 of Montias1. On 10 July 1597, Francois Woutersz. de Schott (I), from Antwerp, 23 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his father Wouter de Schot, and his uncle Balthasar Jacott, was betrothed to Isabeau Walraven, from Antwerp, 19, assisted by Jaques Walraven and Isabeau Becker, her father and mother (DTB 408/199). Balthasar Jacot I, cloth dealer and merchant, was born in Antwerp and died in 1614. He became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1601 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). Wouter de Schot, a merchant born in Antwerp, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1590. Jaques Walraven was a merchant born in Antwerp who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1586 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, pp. 313 and 318). Balthasar Jacot (I), born in Antwerp, was one of the richest cloth merchants in Amsterdam. He invested 15000 f. in the original subscription to V.O.C. shares. He was already dead some 14 years by the time this auction took place (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 196). On 24 April 1625, Franchoys de Schot (probably I) acknowledged receipt of some paintings from the painter/dealer Abraham Decker totaling 160 f., including four landscapes for 60 f. and a large portrait for 22 f. (NA 719, film 5152, also cited in Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1352). On or about 6 September 1632, sr. Francois de Schot (I?), merchant, ceded to sr. Paul de Willem I (the father of Paul de Willem II of INVNO 197) two thirds of a sum of 432 Fl. pounds and 11 schellingen to which he, cedant, was entitled from Adriaen Heermans and Susanna le Mans out of the estate of Daniel de Slachmulder I (NA 843, fol. 269, Not. Hoogeboom). Adriaen Hermansz. may be identical with the individual of that name who was active in trade with Russia around 1620 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 268). Francoijs de Schot (I?), living on the East side of the Keysersgracht, paid a tax of 130 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 93, p. 22). On 25 June 1637, Francois de Schodt (I?) insinuated Aert Dircksz. spices merchant (probably identical with Aert Dircksz. van der Haer of R 20864). De Schodt had sold Aert Dircksz. a half pound of tulip bulbs named Geele cronen for 250 f. He now asked him to take delivery (NA 673, fol. 28vo, Not. J. Warnaertsz., Extracten). On 19 February 1650, Isabeau Walraven, the widow of Franchoys Schott (I), drew up a procuration to collect money due to her (NA 1818, film 2083, Not. Eggericx). For other details about the Schott family, see the TEXT of R 521 of Montias2.
