Buyerde Schout van Diemen
Buyer FamilyDiemen, Schout van
Buyer NotesIn the inventory of the goldsmith Hans Jansz. whose wife had first been married with a brandywine dealer, a debt for 33 f. 9 st. 8 pen. owed by Schout van Diemen for wine was inscribed among the debts due to the boedel of Hans Jansz., jeweler, of 28 January 1634 (see R 21745). Another was owed by Schout Tengnagel (the former painter Jan Tengnagel), who was the substitute schout of Amsterdam. This suggests that he was a schout or substitute schout by the name of Diemen (probably of the family of Ellert van Diemen of R 36114, cited in Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 329-330). The inventory of Hans Jansz., jeweler, is NA 714, film 5148.

Buyer FamilyPieters, Anne Maria
Buyer NotesThe buyer was baptized Annemarij, daughter of Piter Ysaaxz and Susanna Kraijborne (Crayborn) in the presence of Tanneken Kampeijnis on 26 October 1603 (DTB 4/77). Unless a second Annemarij was baptized after the first one died, the age given in the following document is two to three years younger than it should have been. On 16 January 1629, Jacob Jansz. Fortuyn (of R 29635), Adriaen van der Hede, and Hermanus Bros, as guardians over Anna Marie, 23, and Catelyn, 22, the two minor daughters of Pieter Ysaacsz., painter, whose mother was Susanna Craeyborn (Crayborn), brought various assets to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of these children, including a house on Breestraet and an obligation for 3,600 f. (WK 5073/789). On 9 November 1634, Anna Maria was betrothed to Thomas van Welij, from Amsterdam, 33, assisted by his mother Leonora Hekins (Hawkins), living on the Fluwele Burchwal. She was said to be 25 years old, with no living parents, and was assisted by her sister Susanna Ysacx and her brother-in-law Jochem van Dien (of R 23405) (DTB 443/116). She must have underestimated her age by some three years on this occasion as well. Susanna Pieters married Jochem van Dien. Their daughter Christina, baptized on 8 March 1637, married Wouter Willemsz. Oorthoorn (of INVNO 126) on 19 April 1657.

BuyerIsaacq Hiool over den Swarten Hont
Buyer FamilyHiool(Hiole), Isaacq
Buyer NotesIsaack Hiool was the son of Esaias Hiole of INVNO 249, whose widow and children lived on the Wolffstraet in 1631 (R 167). Esaias Hiole, who was from Valenciennes, was betrothed to Jacqueline le Cocq, from Rijssel, on 29 October 1597 (DTB 407/93). On 12 March 1626, Isaack Hiolen, from Amsterdam, cruydenier, assisted by his mother Jacqueline du Cock, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Saer van der Veen, from Amsterdam, assisted by her mother Aeltie Halbaes, living in the Boshuijs (DTB 431/87). A child of the couple was baptized in the N.K. in 1627,1628, 1629, 1630 (child Esaias, witness Marselis Pietersz.), 1631 (child Esaias II), 1633, 1636, and 1639 (child Baltasar, witness Aeltje (Aletta) van der Venne). On 24 May a child under arm of Isaack Hiole, living in the Nes, was buried. 4 f. was paid to the church on his behalf (DTB 1130). On 19 December 1640, Isaack Hiool, cruydenier, widower of Sara van de Venne, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Walburgh Weijers, 30 years old (DTB 458/399). On 22 January 1665, he was cited as one of the guardians of the children of the late Nicolaes de Swaen and Elisabeth de Reus (INTRO to INVNO 207 of R 125 of Montias1). The house de Swarte Hond was indeed located in the Nes, on the corner of the Pieter Jacobsstraet (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 1115). It was apparently he who was buried in the W.K. on 4 December 1683 (DTB 1102/129). He would then have been 79 years old. Jacqueline Hiole, the sister of Isaack, was married to Jerosme (or Jeronimus) Victorij, a tulip grower, who played a significant role in the tulip speculation of 1637 (information provided by Anne Goldgar). On 30 January 1626, they had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the Wals Kerck in the presence of Remont de Smith (of R 23589), Jan Dablin (of R 25066) and Margerite Hiole (DTB 130/202). After the death of Jeronimus Victorij, an inventory of his possessions was drawn up on 20 December 1647. The estate owed the widow of Esaias Eole 1,100 and Isaack Eolij 100 gulden (NA 1914, folio 443vo. and 444). Sara Hiole, another sister of Isaack Hiole was 22 when she was betrothed to Nicolaes Egbertsz. van der Sturck, from Amsterdam, merchant, widower of Maaike Govaerts (of INVNO 479), on 28 June 1635 (DTB 443/390).

BuyerWouter Davidsen inde brouwerij van de Lelie
Buyer FamilyDavidsen, Wouter
Buyer NotesThe buyer was brewer in de Lelie, which was located between the Binnenamstel and the Reguliersbreestraet (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 1118). Wouter Davidsen swore an oath, along with several other brewers in April 1620 regarding the rules and regulations to which the brewers were subject (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 358-9). He paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Breestraet (Kohier, fol. 17v., p. 5). It is possible that he was the individual of that name who, on 25 March 1589, was betrothed to Jannetje Arents. He was said to be from Delft and 25 years old and to be assisted by David Jansz. his father and to be living on the St. Annestraet (DTB 663/336). He would then have been 67 years old in 1631. In a deposition made by the painter Hercules Seghers (of R 30470) on 15 May 1631, Seghers declared that he had sold to the dealer Jean Antonio Romiti 47 paintings that were presently with Sr. Wouter Davits (as well as numerous other paintings that were with Dr. Jacob Gorssius, Aelbert Schuijt (of R 28923), and Salomon de Vogel (of R 7613)) (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 383.) Jacob Gorssius was probably the father of Dr. Pieter (Jacobsz.) Gorssius of R 35074.

Buyer FamilyBogaert, Jan Geurtsz.
Buyer NotesJan Geurtsz. Bogaert (who should not be confused with the attorney Jan Geurtsz. of R 21492) was a merchant. He was the brother of the painter Adriaen Geurtsz. Bogaert (of R 20920) and the son of Geurt Jansz. For a deposition in which the two brothers were involved in a transaction over a painting by Frans Floris, see the NOTES to R 21492. In 1631, Jan Geurtsz. Bogaert, living on the Zeedijck, paid a tax of 60 f. (Kohier, fol. 108vo, p. 26).

BuyerJochem van Dien op de Cingel
Buyer FamilyDien, Jochem van
Buyer NotesJochem van Dien was a merchant, probably dealing in grain. Jochem van Dien, in company with Rijckert Gerritsen van Hooft, freighted a ship to St. Uvis on 26 January 1617; he was said to be a merchant in Amsterdam when he freighted another to Lisbon on 26 February 1618 in the name and in place of the honorable Johan Endicker in Copenhague (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), pp. 13 and 103). Jochem van Dien, or Diemen, was married to Aeltje Goossens. Aeltje was the sister of Elisabeth Goosens, the mother of Goswinus van der Hal (of INVNO 291). Jochem van Dien and Aeltje Goosens had a daughter Lijsbeth baptized in the O.K. on 8 December 1622 (DTB 6/ 34). On 23 March 1629, Jochem van Dien, widower of Aeltgen Goosens, merchant, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his children Lysbeth, 4, and Goosen, 3, were entitled to 7000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). Lijsbeth, who was four years old in 1629, was probably the second child of that name. Jochem van Dien and Meynert Egbertsz. were named guardians over the goods to which Jan Hendricksz. Coninck, the son of Hendrick Egbertsz. Coninck, was entitled (WK 5073/513, fol. 34vo.) Jan Hendricx Coninck was married to Geertruyt van Nieulandt, the daughter of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt of R 20925. Hendrick Egbertsz. Coninck may be identical with the silversmith Hendrick Coning to whom Jan Mienze Molenaer had consigned certain jewels, which, according to Molenaer's declaration of 25 January 1659, Coning had never returned to him (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p.21). In 1627, he joined 26 other aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor) in a petition concerning the collection of a levy on grain to benefit the poor (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). Jochem van Diden, living on the Singel, who is probably identical with our buyer, paid a tax of 75 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 60, p. 15). Jochem van Dien remarried with Cathalijn Pieters, the daughter of the painter Pieter Isaacksz., probably in the early 1630s. His daughter Christina was baptized on 8 March 1637. She married Wouter Willemsz. van Oorthoorn (of INVNO 126) on 19 April 1657. On 28 October 1644 he assisted his daughter Lijsbeth upon her betrothal to Michiel Persoij from Amsterdam (DTB 461/162). Michiel Persoij II, from Amsterdam, baptized on 27 November 1615, was the son of Michiel Persoij I, from Paris, who was betrothed to Judith Jans on 15 November 1603 (see R 214 of Montias1 and INVNO 298). Goosen van Dien, born in 1626 (see above), married Magdalena de Vogel. For her death inventory, see INVNO 209. On 21 April 1643, Gysbert van Dien, sailmaker, last widower of Hendrickge Jans ter Duijne(?), remarried with Grietgen Stoffels, on one side, and Jochem van Dien and Willem Willemsz. van Amelandt (probably of INVNO 1222) on the other, as uncle and neve (probably cousin) respectively of Jan Aertsz. van Dien, son of minor age of Hendrickge Jans, came to an agreement regarding the inheritance. Hendrickge Jans had passed her testament on 26 October 1638 (NA 997, film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren). Jochem van Dien signed the February 1645 petition calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 90). On 29 February 1656, Johan van Dien, assisted by his great uncle Jochem van Dien, Wessel ten Balen, as guardian and uncle, and Cornelis Willemsz., as guardian, signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Elisabeth Camphuysen, assisted by her stepfather Willem Kerckhem, Cornelis Beth (of R 23411?). her relative, Cornelis Evertsz. her relative, and Abraham Cornelisz. Cos and Hendrick lademaecker (drawermaker), as testamentary guardians (NA 1597, fol. 144, Not. W. Hasen). Jochem van Dien drew up his testament on 12 September 1662. He left to Susanna van Dien, his daughter, married to Jan de Kempenaer (II), a large painting where he and his second wife (Catalijna Pieters) with a few children were portrayed. His four daughters from his second marriage, beside Christina and Susanna, already cited, were Catharina and Alida. He probably died soon afterwards (Volkert Manuth in Oud Holland 112(1998), pp. 143-4).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Vincent Molshoeck]
Buyer FamilyMolshoeck, Vincent
Buyer NotesOn 15 August 1619, Vincent Henricksz. Molshoeck, from Delft, 40, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, was betrothed to Clausje Pieters, widow of Jacob Potter (6 years) (DTB 423/356). He was a well-known merchant in Delft, whose brother, the merchant Pieter Hendricksz. Molshoeck, was inscribed in the Guild of St. Luke, probably as a liefhebber (Montias, Artists and Artisans in Delft, pp. 136-7). On 3 August 1643, the honorable Henrick Molshoeck (II), merchant, accompanied by his uncle Vincent Molshoeck and the honorable Bonaventuer Broen (cited in the NOTES to R 21230), his good acquaintance, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Catharina Odendael, assisted by Coenradt Odendael, her father, and Wynant Odendael, her uncle (NA 988, act 41, Not. J. Bosch). Coenradt Odendael seems to be identical with the surgeon of that name (also called Mr. Coenradt) of R 20324.

BuyerHendrick Jansz. Kruijwagen
Buyer FamilyKruijwagen (Cruijwagen), Hendrick Jansz.
Buyer NotesOn 21 April 1623, Heijndrick Janssen (signs Kruywagen), seijlmacker, assisted by Cornelis Thysz., his schoonvader, living on the Nieuwe Dijck, was betrothed to Barbara Jans, 23, assisted by her mother Niesge Claes (DTB 669/61). Niesge Jans, the widow of Jan Pietersz., signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628, as did Hendrick Jansz. Kruywagen. Hendrick Jansz. Kruywagen paid a tax of 25 f. in 1631, at which time he lived in the Houttuijnen (Kohier, fol. 73vo., p. 18). Hendrick Jansz. Kruywagen signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 4 March 1638, Hendrick Jansz. Cruijwagen, 39 years old, and Jan van der Mije (probably of R 32487), 41, both merchants, declared at the request of Court Danielsz., pachter (farmer, collector) of the 40th penning tax on the ships, that they were both freighters of the ship de Roos (NA 696A, film 4982). Some time in 1652, the honorable Hendrick Jansz. Cruywagen, captain of the delegation, and Barent Coornhert signed a document as witnesses (NA 1597, fol. 142). Hendrick Jansz. Kruywagen was the father of Cornelis Cruywagen, painter, who was betrothed to Grietien Olphers from Oostzaenen, aged 21, in 1644 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 187). The painter Cornelis Mebeecq Kruywagen, who married Elisabeth de Ring, was presumably Hendrick's son and the latter's son, the painter Cornelis Mebeecq, his grandson (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 240-249).

BuyerPontanus de oom van de kinderen
Buyer FamilyPontanus, (Joannes Isaacksz.)
Buyer NotesJoannes Isaacksz. Pontanus was born at sea on 21 January 1571, on the way to Denmark (his father was consul of Denmark from 1596 to his death in 1615). On 2 May 1606, Joannes Isaacius Pontanus, professor de medecyn, 34 years old, living in Harderwyck, assisted by his brother Pieter Isacxsz., was betrothed to Anneken van der Heede, from Antwerp, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by her parents Philips van der Heed (I) and Tanneken Zuerius (Zweers) (DTB 411/748). Philips van der Heed (II), who was perhaps the son or grandson of Philips van der Heed I, married Helena Pieters, the daughter of Pieter Isaacksz. (see the NOTES to R 23488). In 1614 Johannes Isaacksz. Pontanus, medicinae doctor et in Academia Herdervicena Philosophiae Professor, gave his brother Pieter Isaacksz. in Copenhagen procuration to share in the inheritance of his late father Isaack Pietersz. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, vol. 5, p. 1478). He was named official historian by the King of Denmark and by the States of Gelderland. He published a history of Amsterdam in 1611 (Amsterdam edition 1616) and a book of poems (Poemata) in 1634 (Kalff, Geschiedenis ..., vol. 4, p. 327). On 12 May 1637, Karel Plancius, living in Leiden, cashed a V.O.C. obligation on behalf of Johannes Pontanus, which apparently was in the name of Adriaen van der Heede (NA 598, fol. 213, Not. Lamberti). Pontanus died in 1639 (C. Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, 1957, p. 965.) On 10 May 1642, Anna van der Hede, widow of Johannes Pontanus, professor etc.., was involved in a dispute concerning the common wall of her house in Amsterdam with David Reyniersz. Serinck N.A.997, film 1228, Notary Gerrit Coren). His son Isaack Pontanus married Maria Anslo (II) in 1672 (see R 13 of Montias1).

BuyerCornelis Betsen in de Warmoesstraet
Buyer FamilyBetsen, Cornelis (Gillisz.?)
Buyer NotesAt the sale of books of Dr. Melchior Bouwer, former secretary of the city of Amsterdam, Cornelis Betsen bought a number of books. He is probably identical with Cornelis Gillisz. Beth, 1592-1667, who was director of the Schouwburg in 1639/1640 (as suggested by Marten Jan Bok). He was a merchant. When he was appointed director of the Schouwburg, which was considered a regent family synecure, he was said to be an ezelkop (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 72(1980), pp. 30 and 42). His father Gillis Jansz. Beth, a member of the Vroedschap of Amsterdam from 1618 to 1633 (named by Prince Maurits), lived in the Warmoesstraet, as did Cornelis Betsen (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 318.) The sister of Gillis Jansz., named Grietge (the aunt of Cornelis Betsen), married the notary Salomon Henrix (of R 24985), who became city secretary in 1596 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 318). Rebecca de Vos married Cornelis Beth in 1632. On [?] November 1634, Jan Beth, Dr. Petrus Mulerius, husband and guardian of Machteltge Beth, Willem Moors, husband and guardian of Maritge Beth, [crossed out: Grietge Beth], in the absence of her husband, Bartolomeus Seger, her father-in-law and guardian] and Elisabet Beth, spinster of majority age, assisted by Jacob Binck, alderman and counsellor of Amsterdam, all together substituting for Cornelis Beth, their brother, living in Rotterdam, and for Grietge Beth, their sister, name Jean de Bray, attorney before the Court of Amsterdam to represent them concerning the estate of Gillis Jansz. Beth, their late father. On the same day, Dr. Beth, Dr. Petrus Mulierius, husband of Machteltge Beth, Grietge Beth, wife of Bartolomeus Segers, and, in view of latter's absence, assisted with her father-in-law Jasper Beth, and Elisabeth Beth make arrangements to collect various legacies from their father and mother (NA 843, fol. 759, Not. Hoogeboom). On Bartholomeus Segers, see the NOTES to R 36738. It was on a piece of printed paper announcing the funeral of Rebecca de Vos in 1661 (op de N.Z. Achterburchwal) that Rembrandt drew a sketch of The Conspiracy of the Batavians (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 492). Jan Betsen Rodenburg, who was Cornelis Betsen's brother, signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Jan Betsen, bookkeeper in the Wisselbank, was said to be 54 years old in a deposition of 20 February 1637 (NA 890, film 595, Notary van Zwieten). Pieter Roodenburg, another brother of Cornelis, went to the East Indies in 1636. On 16 January, he acknowledged a debt to his brother Jan for fitting him out for his trip (NA 843, fol. 1100, Not. Hoogeboom). On 3 June 1636, Jan Betsen Roodenburgh, bookkeeper in the Wisselbank, 53, declared at the request of Erasmus van Forckenbeec that Adolf van Forckenbeec (his brother) had mistakenly debited the account of Jacob Tijboel to the extent of 1553 f. (NA 843, Not. Hoogenboom). Adolf van Forckenbeec(k) may, but is unlikely to, be identical with Adolf van Donckenbeeck of R 21020. The poet Theodore (Dirck) Roodenburgh Bets was also a brother of Jan Betsen and Pieter Roodenburgh. Sara Roodenburgh, who was the daughter of Horatius Horatius Rodenburg and the granddaughter of Dirck Roodenburgh Bets, married the painter Robbert van Mandevyll who died poor in 1673 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 761, 763). On 7 December 1657, Robbert Mandeviel, in the name of his wife, heir of Chistiaen van Rodenburch, together with other heirs, opposed the sale of several houses in Amsterdam. They must, however, give their consent. Each will get 1/12 of the purchase price (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 148 of the Nachträge).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Dirck Joosten in de Bantemerstraet]
Buyer FamilyJoosten, Dirck (Rijskamp)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a merchant and rope maker. On 14 October 1620, Dirck Joosten, from Egmond op de Haeff, 25 years old, living op 't Water, was betrothed to Trijntje van Chanu, 23, assisted by her father Jan Hectorsz. van Chanu and her mother Grietje Dircx, living on the Gelderse Kaij (DTB 425/94). Jan Hectorsz. van Chanu, lived first in Utrecht, then in Amsterdam. He was a lumber dealer in the Ridderstraet. Trijntje van Chanu was the sister of Agatha (Aechgen) van Chanu who married Jan van Hartoghvelt, the nephew of Barent van Hartoghvelt of R 30608. Jan van Hartoghvelt, like other members of the Van Chanu family a signatory of the Remonstrant petition of 1628, but probably Roman Catholic, was born in 1602. He was one of the Aelmoezeniers in 1635 (NA 1184, Not. J. de Vos, 2 February 1635) and one of the Regents of the Leprozenhuis in 1649 (see the NOTES to R 27411). On 7 November 1621, Dirck Joosten and Trijn Jans had their son Arijan baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Grietie Dirx (DTB 40/146). On 12 March 1626, Dirck Joosten, merchant, as purchaser of a rope-making establishment from the widow and heirs of Cornelis Goris, sailmaker, was involved in a dispute with the sellers. They appealed to three arbiters, Cornelis van Campen, Jan Gerritsz. Hooft, and Adriaen Jacobsz., city mason, to settle the dispute (WK 5073/549). On 15 November 1630, Claes Cornelisz. Neus and Dirck Joosten signed a contract regulating their common property, including the rope-throwing establishment named 's Landts Welvaeren and shares in ships, the whole estimaed at 8,000 f. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 738). Claes Cornelisz. Neus was the father of Annetje Claes who was betrothed to Frans Snijder, from Lansmeer, on 4 October 1646. Frans Snijder, 35, no living parents, was assisted by Cornelis Jansz. Bet, who was probably identical with or related to Cornelis Betsen of R 23411. Grietje Dircx Duyvel, widow of Jan Hectorsz. van Chanu, signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628, as did her son-in-law Dirck Joosten. On 14 September 1629, Dirck Joosten appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his three children, Adriaen, 8, Hector, 5, and Weijntgen, 2, whose mother was the late Catharina van Chanu. He declared that they stood to inherit 18,000 f. (WK 5073/789). Dirck Joosten, widower of Catharina van Chanu, living op de Wael, was betrothed again, to Judith Hulfts, assisted by her mother Wallitje (Ballitje ?) Hasselaers, on 24 July 1634(DTB 673/195). Judith Hulfts was the daughter of Pieter Evertsz. Hulft (of R 31228) and of Balichgen Pieters Hasselaer (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 535). Because the mother's name was not inscribed in the registers of baptisms of the Lutheran Church, we cannot be sure that the following baptism refers to the same Dirck Joosten and Judith Hulfts. On 21 January 1635, Dirck Joosten had his son Jan baptized in the L.K. in the presence of Pieter Tylman Brock, Fredrick Hendricx, and Creesjen Luijcas (DTB 140/143). On 8 November 1635, Sr. Dirck Joosten insinuated Srs. Roeloff Codde, Jan Michielsz. Blaeuw, and Hans Schepel concerning the insurance he claimed on a ship that had sailed from Livorno (NA 412B, fol. 330, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) On Jan Michielsz. Blaeuw, the son of Michiel Cornelisz. Blaeuw, see the NOTES to R 32580. It was probably in connection with the same affair that, on 25 October 1636, he insinuated the three men cited in the last document, together with Pieter van de Trill, Chelio Marchelis, and the heirs of Georgio Gulden, concerning his claims on the ship De Engel St. Michiel which he had insured with these insurers (NA 598, fol. 9, Not. Lamberti). Chelio (or Celis) Marchelis (Marsellis) was the brother of Gabriel Marsellis of R 8315. He and his wife [...] Verstraten had their daughter Anna baptized in the Remonstrant Church on 14 November 1634 (DTB 301). On 21 November 1635, Grietgen Dircx, widow of Jan (Hectorsz.) de Chanu, drew up her testament. She left Adriaen and Hector Rijskamp (the sons of Dirck Joosten, who were 14 and 11 respectively), among other goods, two paintings, one of Jeronimus, the other of a church, under the provision that the goods would remain with Aechgen van Chanu, their aunt, until they came to be married (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 27 July 1636, Dirck Joosten had his daughter Trijntje baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Willem van Kemp (of R 21470), Grietje Joosten (of R 29744?), and Grietje Claes (DTB 140/195). In a document of 29 October 1629, Dirck Joosten, merchant, asked two brokers to testify that rope, cord, hemp, and cables were usually sold for cash in Amsterdam (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 638). In 1631, Dirck Joosten rented a space for making rope from the city for 50 f. per year (Van Dillen, ibid. p. 783). In the same year, he paid a tax of 30 f. He was still living on Bantemerstraet om de hoeck op de Wael (Kohier, fol. 116, p. 28). In January 1626, he paid 4900 f. for the rope-throwing establishment (lijnbaen) of the late Cornelis Goris (WK 5073/913). This purchase led to a dispute with the widow and heirs of Cornelis Goris. Jan Gerritsz. Hooft(1584-1644) and Adriaen Jacobsz., stadstimmerman, were appointed as good men by the Orphan Chamber to help settle the dispute (WK 5073/549, 12 March 1626). Jan Gerritsz. Hooft, a mennonite merchant, signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Hooft was an important grain merchant who, during the grain scarcity period of 1630, was asked by the bourgomasters about his stocks of buckwheat and rye in Amsterdam and Dordrecht, some of which he sold to the city (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 727). On Jan Hectorsz. van Chanu, see the NOTES to R 30608.

BuyerAndries Polster
Buyer FamilyPolster, Andries (II)
Buyer NotesIt was probably Andries Polster I, who was then living in Cologne, who had Ghijsbert Aertsz. invest 900 f. for him in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 151). On 3 June 1622, Andries Polster (II), from Cologne, 28 years old, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Aeltgien van der Veen, 24, assisted by her mother Aeltgien Becker, living in the Warmoesstraet (DTB 427/160). On 24 August 1623, Andries Polster and Aeltjen van der Veen had their son Andries baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Aeltje van de Veen and Willem van Steenbergen (DTB 6/56). The witness Aeltje van de Veen (nee Becker) was said to be the grandmother of the child. On 9 January 1628, Cornelis was baptized in the presence of Aeltjen Jaspers (the grandmother again) and Melster van der Veen (DTB 6/195). On 26 December 1630, Susanna was baptized in the presence of Aernout van Lijbergen (I? of R 30681) (DTB 6/292). It was presumably Andries Polster II who paid a tax of 40 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Oude Schans (Kohier, fol. 125, p. 30). On 13 December 1633, Andries Polster II was insinuated at his house by contractants for Japanese wood or lumber (NA 409, film 4787, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 11 April 1636, Andries Polster II, together with 30 other merchants, signed a declaration on behalf of Adriaen van Ackerlaeck, claiming that he was still credit-worthy (NA 695A, film 4821). On 12 June 1638, the Raad of Amsterdam allowed Andries Polster II, as well as Albert van Solingen, Jan Cuysten (II), Paul de Wilhelm (I), and Joachim van Vickervoort II (of R 18947) to export large quantities of fuses (lont) to Hamburg (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 38(1941), p. 46). On 3 March 1639, Michiel Jacobsz., sworn broker, 45, and Jan Bosman, spices merchant, 25, declared at the request of the honorable Andries Polster (II) that five weeks ago they had gone to see the attic of Polster's house, on the Oude Schans, where they had found 37 bales of rice which he, Polster, had received from the ship of Andries Dommers coming from Venice. The shipment included three bales that were not of the requisite quality (die niet tochten) (NA 921, Not. Barent Verbeeck). For the death inventory of Michiel Jacobsz., broker, dated 14 January 1649, which included a landscape with mountains by (Steven) van Goor, see NA 2408, Not. J. de Winter). By 12 May 1644, Andries Polster had become insolvent, and his inventory was taken for the benefit of his creditors (INVNO 1252). According to a document of the Desolate Boedelskamer of 6 July 1644 (DTB 5072/872), his mother-in-law Juffr. Alidt (Aeltgien) Beckers, widow of Balthasar van der Veen (not identical with the painter of INVNO 473?), was said to have passed a procuration naming Balthasar van den Bogaert to obtain an accord with the creditors.

Buyer NotesThe relatively high price paid for this lot suggests that the buyer was Margriet (Margaretha) van Valckenburgh, the widow of the very wealthy Marcus de Vogelaer (I). Marcus Justusz. de Vogelaer, born in Antwerp in 1564, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1587. He invested 18,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602, his widow 20,000 f. in the second subscription of 1612 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 317, and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 259). He was 24 years old, living on the corner of the Papenbrugsteeg (in the Warmoesstraet), when he married Margriet van Valckenburg, daughter of Jan van Valckenburg, 22, on 3 June 1588 (DTB 405/13, cited in Van Dillen, op.cit., p. 110). He did extensive business in Russia (in caviar and other wares) with his brother Jasper. He was buried in O.K. on 23 June 1610 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 62(1944), col. 52). In 1623, Margareta van Valckenburgh was summoned by the Kerkeraad (Church Council) of the Reformed Church for allowing dancing in her house at the wedding of her daughter Isabeau (or Isabelle). She said that this had not been of her own doing, as she had never learned to dance, but it might well have happened. In the mean time Isabeau had moved to The Hague with her husband, Johan Dedel. But she needed a certificate of good behavior from the church in Amsterdam before she could take communion in The Hague. She had to come to Amsterdam in person to show her contrition before the certificate was issued (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, Hilversum, 1990, p. 327). In 1631, the widow of Marcus de Vogelaer, living in the Barndesteech, paid a tax of 1500 f., one of the highest recorded (Kohier, fol. 150, p. 35). Margaretha van Valckenburg was buried in the O.K. on 20 July 1650 (DTB 1046/105vo). The individual named Marcus de Vogelaer (II) who paid a tax of 200 f. in 1631 was the son of Marcus de Vogelaer I. Born in 1590, he married Geertruyd van Collen (Ceulen), a daughter of Caspar van Ceulen, in February 1619 and remarried with Catharina Velaer, born in 1596, the daughter of the rich merchant Jacques de Velaer, of South Netherlandish origin, in June 1623 (Van Dillen, ibid. and Kohier, fol. 239vo, p. 55). Marcus de Vogelaer II was the brother-in-law of Paulus van Hertsbeeck I, the father of Paulus van Hertsbeeck II of R 32142 who married Catharina's sister Johanna Velaer. Marcus de Vogelaer II corresponded with Constantijn Huygens (J. Worp, Briefwisseling van Constantijn Huygens, R.G.P. 15(1911), p. 5). He was one of the directors of the W.I.C. On 27 March 1638, he was given a procuration by his mother to collect some money belonging to her deposited with the V.O.C. (NA 413, Not. Jacob Jacobs, film 6434.) Other children of Marcus Justusz. de Vogelaer included Anna, married to Jan ten Grootenhuis Jansz.; Isabella, mentioned above, married to mr. Johan Dedel; Daniel, married to Barbara van de Perre (the daughter of Balthasar van de Perre of R 8218); Sara, married to Mr. Gerhardus van der Nypoort; Maria, married to Hendrick Hooghcamer, equipage meester of the Admiralty (of INVNO 482); and Hester, married to Jacob (Aernoutsz.) van Erp. Another daughter, with an unreadable name, was married first to Hieronymus van Uffelen who died in 1628 and second to Jonker Hendrick Schaep (Nederlandsche Leeuw 62(1944), col. 52, 53). Maria de Vogelaer Marcusdr., who was 28 years old when she was betrothed to Albertus Rusius, professor and doctor in both cannon and secular law, on 17 June 1653, was the daughter of Marcus de Vogelaer II. She died in Leiden in 1678 (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 319 and Maandblad Amstelodamum 68(1981), p. 10). In 1652, the merchants Daniel de Vogelaer and Salomon Sweers, both drunk, had got into a fight at a banquet, for which both men, who were members of the Reformed Community, were summoned for discipline before the Kerkeraad (Roodenburgh, Onder censuur, Verloren, 1990, p. 355).

BuyerPhilips van Heden ofte Helena Pieters
Buyer FamilyHeden, Philips van (de jonge ?)
Buyer NotesPhilips van der Heeden II belonged to a Remonstrant family, which included Jan Aertsz. van der Heden (Driebrugge 1610-1655) portrayed in Rembrandt's Nightwatch (communication of S.A.C. Dudok van Heel.). He was probably the grandson of Philips van de Eede (or Heede) (I), cruijdenier, who had been living in Antwerp for 14 years in 1584 and who invested 1,500 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 142). On 3 January 1593, an individual named Philips van der Heede (I?), from Antwerp, became a citizen of Amsterdam. On 5 August 1595, another individual with the same name, Philips van der Heede (II?), also from Antwerp, became a citizen (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). A daughter of Philips van der Heeden (I?), named Anneken, married Joannes Isaacksz. Pontanus of R 23409, the brother of the painter Pieter Isaacksz. of the present inventory on 2 May 1606. Philips van der Heeden II was apparently the first husband of Helena Pieters, the daughter of Pieter Isaacksz. In that case, he would not be identical with the following individual of the same name. On 22 June 1630, Philips van der Hede, from Brugge, living in Haarlem, was betrothed to Vroutie Winters, from Dieweren, widow of Jacob Jacobsz. de Ghyselaer, living on Vlooienburgh (DTB 764/84). Note also that this individual was born in Brugge and not in Antwerp as the others of the same name were.

BuyerDirck Corver
Buyer FamilyCorver, Dirck (Jansz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a merchant who lived first on the Heeregracht and later on the Keizersgracht. He was baptized in the O.K. on 30 August 1587, the son of Jan Jansz. Corver and Nelletgen Jacobs Bas (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 471). In 1615, Dirck Corver was a member of the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 41). On 12 June 1621, Dirck Corver, living on the Heeregracht, was betrothed to Maria van Schotterbosch, from Haarlem, and living there (DTB 763/90). On 23 July 1623, Dirck Korver and Grietjen (sic) Schotterbos had their son Jacob baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jan Gerritsz. Schoterbos and Nelletje Bassen (DTB 6/53). It is probable that Maria and Jan Gerritsz. Schotterbosch were the children of Gerrit Willemsz. van Schoterbosch (Haarlem 1528- Haarlem 1611), a burgomaster of Haarlem, whose art collection was cited by Carel van Mander (he owned works by Jan van Schorel and Goltzius). If this identification is correct, Jan and Maria were also the brother and sister of Floris van Schotterbosch to whom Goltzius dedicated a print in 1590 after Floris returned from a trip to Constantinople. His collection was also cited by Van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 160). On 15 November 1628, Dirck Corver and Maria van Schotterbosch had their son Jan baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Adriaan van Duvenvoorde (DTB 40/437). Dirck Corver signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 30 July 1630, Dirck Corver declared at the request of Gysbert Tiebbesz. Popta , the son of Tjebbe Popta of R 27751, that three weeks ago, the petitioner (Popta), being an heir of Jan Pietersz. du Bien (of R 30035), had been insulted by Jan van Aldewerelt (probably concerning this inheritance) (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). Dirck Corver paid a tax of 125 f. in 1631, living on the East side of the Keisersgracht (Kohier, fol. 302vo, p. 69). On 20 June 1633, Michiel Corssen Corael, 47 (of R 32652), and Dirck Corver, 45, declared at the request of Dirck Geurtsz. Beuningh (of R 21904) that they freighted the ship St. Pieter bound for Madeira where it was supposed to load wine (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). Dirck Corver was buried in the N.K. on 12 December 1633. He was then living on the Keysersgracht and 8 f. were paid to the church on his behalf (DTB 1054/79vo). On 24 May 1634, the curators of the estate of Diric Corver had notary Hoogenboom insinuate Pieter Reael (of R 28042), receiver of the common revenues for the quarter of Amsterdam, and show him the act of transfer by Diric Niesen Gerritsz. for 962 f., which Niesen had transferred to Corver. Reael asked for a copy of the transfer (NA 843, fol. 614, Not. Hoogeboom). On 23 May 1635, the dramatist and historian P.C. Hooft wrote to his brother-in-law Joost Baeck (the son of Laurens Baeck of R 28932) about the book of Amzing on Haarlem that he had once borrowed from the late Dirck Corver. He pointed out that Corver was the son-in-law of Jan van Schoterbosch (De briefwisseling van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, vol. 2, p. 612). Tietgen Corver, one of the children of Dirck Corver and Maria van Schotterbosch, married Goris de Waert of R 7605. On 2 May 1636, Claes Corver (of R 8317) and Goris de Waert (of R 7605) appeared before the Orphan Chamber in their capacity as uncles of the children of Dirck Corver and Maria van Schoterbosch and declared that the children were entitled to various assets (including an obligation for 3,000 f., 4141 f. in coopmanschapen etc..) out of the inheritance of Jan Jansz. Corver de jonge, respectively the appearers' brother and brother-in-law (WK 5073/789). On 8 July 1637, the honorable Goris de Weert and Adriaen Claesz., merchants, together with Frans Wolphertsz. van den Berch, Jaspar van Diemen, Frans Volckertsz. Croeck, Garbrant Brouwer, Joost Baeck, and Frans van Limborch, all administrators of the estate of Dirck Corver, gave a procuration to Huybrecht Beens to request from Paulus Hendricksz. Pol in Coningsbergen in Prussia an accounting of the deliveries of salt that he (Pol) had received from Goris de Weert, Adriaen Claesz., and Dirck Corver (this last for a 3/11th share) (NA 642, film 4954, Not. Sybrant Cornelissen, fol. 412). Paulus Hendricksz. Pol was presumably the brother of Gerrit Hendricksz. Pol who had died before 13 August 1619 when Abraham Anthonisz., Gerrit Volckertsz. and Jurgen Volckertsz. (perhaps related to Frans Volckertsz. Croeck cited above), were named guardians over the children of Cytgen(?) Rutten, the wife of the late Gerrit Hendricksz. Pol (WK 5073/513, fol. 177). Dirck Corver's son Joan Corver was baptized on 15 February 1628. He married Margaretha van Bambeeck on 17 September 1660 (daughter of Nicolaes Bambeeck II and Agatha Bas). After her death he remarried on 16 June 1669 with Agatha Munter, daughter of Joan Munter and Margaretha Geelvinck. Joan Corver became burgomaster in 1681 and served several times in this capacity until his death in 1717 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp .521-2).
