BuyerJoost Possenier koeckebacker bij de Lange Brugh
Buyer FamilyPossenier (Postenier, Possenier), Joost
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Joost Passenier, was a cake baker. He was the co-executor of the testament of Louis Rocourt, along with Abraham de Schilder (of R 20401) and the painter Adriaen Imbrechts (of R 23627). The first inventory of Louis Rocourt (INVNO 2016) was taken at his request (along with that of Abraham de Schilder). In the inventory taken after the death of Truijtje Pieters, the wife of the jeweler Hans Jansz., the list of debts owed by Hans Jansz. includes one for 1,200 f. due to Joost Passenier (INVNO 3560 of 28 January 1634). On 25 September 1636, Janneke Thijs, wife of Joost Possenier, sick in her body, drew up her testament. She named six children, of whom, due to damage in the text, only four can be read: Catharina, Guillame, Maycken, and Abraham, all procreated by her husband. She left Catharina 200 f. (NA 995, film 1225, Not. G. Coren). Joost may have been the son or the brother of Hans Passenier, pastry baker, married to Trijntje Jans, who died before 7 July 1637 when his widow complained in a deposition about her defloration (NA 919, film 1150).

BuyerJan Spiers inde Warmoesstraet in Leicester.
Buyer FamilySpiers, Jan (Johannes)
Buyer NotesOn 31 December 1631, Johannes Spiers, from Amsterdam, 32 years old, assisted by his father Abraham Spiers, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Judith van Bueren, 20, assisted by her father Reyer van Bueren (DTB 438/181). Judith van Buren, the daughter of the prominent wine dealer Reynier van Buren of R 31437. was the sister of Ida van Buren. Abraham Spiers, silk cloth dealer born in Antwerp before 1575, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1588 when he acquired the house Texel on the Warmoesstraat. He was married to Anna Sprenckhuysen. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 729, Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314, and Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 36/5). On Reyer or Reynier van Bueren de oude, see R 31437. Judith van Bueren was baptized on 14 October 1611 in the presence of Ariaen Jansz. (DTB 39/257). Abraham Spiers lived in the Roode Camel (the former Texel ?) on the Warmoesstraet where he dealt in silk cloth (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 729). He was one of the directors of the W.I.C. in 1630 (Johannes van Laten, History of the W.I.C.). Abraham Spaers (probably a misspelling for Spiers) was taxed 350 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 143vo., p. 33). For the death inventory (insolvent) of Abraham Spiers, dated 4 January 1639, see INVNO 611. It is likely that Jan lived in his father's house both in 1627 and 1631. On 8 January 1636, an inventory was made of the goods of Jan Spier at the request of his creditors (NA 695A, film 4981). On 15 February 1636, Jean de Sauteau, French merchant, transferred to Jan Spiers an obligation for 161 f. issued by Jan Jansz. Verbeeck, hat merchant in Leyden (NA 949, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). On 13 June 1636, Jan Claesz. Stachhouwer, 33, Arent Gerritsz., steenhower, 33, and Cornelis Brouwer, glass maker, 30, declared at the request of Elsgen de Vos that they had heard Claes Symensz. call Johannes Spiers a schelm in Buijcksloot (NA 478, fol. 221, Not. Palm Mathijs). Three years later, Jan or Joannes Spiers was involved in a dispute over the estate of his father Abraham Spiers (NA 422, Not. Jacob Jacobsz., 25-26 April 1640). Jan Claesz. Stachhower may be identical with Jan (Johan) Stachholder (Stachouwer), the brother-in-law of Gerrit Coppit, cited in the NOTES to R 26691. Johan Stachouwer, Heer van Schiermonnikoog, born in 1598, married Wijbrich Appelman (1603-1637), the daughter of Sybrand Appelman (see the NOTES to R 31130) and of Trijntge Coppit (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 11). Johannes Spiers was buried on 9 November 1640. Ida van Buren remarried with Gijsbert Kuysten (Elias, loc. cit.)

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Marten Verbrugge in Dantsich op de Keisersgracht bij de Wolfstraet]
Buyer FamilyVerbrugge, Marten
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Marten Verbrugge, was said to be a broker in 1625 when he was named co-guardian of an orphan (WK 5073/513, fol. 30vo.) He may be the son of Marten Verbrugge, tailor, who was paid 127 f. 12 st., according to his bill, by the sons of Hans Thijsz. on 25 May 1613 (Arch. Thys, Leyden University Library, no. 112A). On 16 October 1626, Jacques le Merchier, goldsmith, of R 20399, and Marten Verbruggen brought 10,400 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of Elisabeth, 12, and Christina, 10, the children left by David de Prins, sugar refiner, whose mother was Christina Jans (WK 5073/789). For the post-mortem sale of the possessions of David de Prins, see INVNO 613. On 2 August 1626, Marten Verbrugge and his wife Lysbet van Keerburg, baptized their daughter Maria in the N.K. in the presence of Matheus van Keerburg (DTB 40/354). Marten Verbrugge paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he indeed lived on the Keisersgracht, East side (Kohier, fol. 92, p. 22). He must have died shortly after paying his tax since he was replaced as guardian, due to his death, by the merchant Egbert Jansz., on 3 July 1631. Egbert Jansz., who was said to be the uncle of the children, was most probably the brother of Christina Jans (WK 5073/513, fol. 30vo.)

BuyerAbraham Hendricksz. uijtdraager
Buyer FamilyHendricksz., Abraham (uitdraager)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a dealer in second-hand goods (uitdraager or uitdraagster). In 1633, he asked the consistory of the Reformed Church whether it was legitimate to marry one's own niece. He was told it was not. A year later the consistory heard that he had got married in Hagesteijn (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, 1990, p. 311). It has been assumed that the buyer of this name who bought numerous lots at several sales was the second-hand dealer, who may or may not be identical with the Father of the Lazarus or Leprous Hospital of R 20254.

BuyerIJsack Bevelot
Buyer FamilyBevelot, IJsack (Isaack) (I)
Buyer NotesOn 27 June 1622, IJsack Bevelot, 24, assisted by his father Steven Bevelot, living in Swanenburcht in Emster, was betrothed to Elisabeth du Gardin, 28 (?), assisted by her father Nicolas du Gardin (I), living on the Breedestraet (DTB 427/183). Steven Bevelot was a merchant from Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1588 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 295). He died before 2 January 1635, when his widow, Susanna van Monstruel, assisted by Samuel du Gardyn, named her son Isaack Bevelot (II); Jan de la Vigne, her grandson; and Dominicus Poulje (Poulle), her grandson-in-law, to assist her in selling a house near the Verwerijen named De Roode Hant and another on the Warmoesstraet named Het Meermeyssen, near the St. Janstr. (NA 843, fol. 792, Not. Hoogeboom). Jan (Jean) de la Vigne, born in Antwerp, co-rector of the Latin School at Hardewijck, later professor there, formerly married to Anna Bevelot, married Janneken Lestevenon on 12 April 1610. He was the father of Susanna de la Vigne (born in 1606) who married Dominicus Poulle (1600-1638) on 16 December 1625 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp. 672 and 713). According to Isabella van Eeghen, the auction sale of the estate of Susanne de la Vigne, which took place in the Bracke Gront, brought nearly 16,000 f. (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1959), p. 85). Anna Bevelot may have been the sister of Steven Bevelot, cited below. On 4 May 1635, Isaack Bevelot and Dominicus Poulle, both merchants, son and swager respectively of Susanna de Monstreux, widow of Steven Bevelot, on one side, and Willem Brughman, in the name of his mother Maria Hardebols(?), on the other, came to an agreement on the inheritance from Steven Bevelot (NA 991, fol.41, Not. J. Bosch). Willem Brughman may be identical with the individual of that name who was said to be a cloth merchant on 12 February 1665. He was insinuated on that date by the dyer Hendrik Jacobsz. Rooleeuw who had dyed six bolts of cloth on Brughman's order, who had refused to accept delivery (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 725). Hendrick Jacobsz. Rooleeuw (c. 1605-1670) married 1) Giertje Voordewint and 2) Catrina Hoogsaet, painted by Rembrandt. He was the brother of Dr. Anthonie Jacobsz. Roscius (1593-1624); of the painter Lambert Jacobsz. (c.1598-1670), the father of the painter Abraham van den Tempel; of Isaac Jacobsz. Rooleeuw (c.1600-c.1670), married to Ytien Reiniers, one of whose daughters (or granddaughters) married the painter Arnoud van Halen; and of Elsie Jacobs (c.1603-c.1626) who married Lubbert van Diephorst (Diephout) (Oud Holland 47(1930), p.154). The family was Mennonite. The apothecary Lubbert van Diephout was inscribed as a medical student in Leiden University on 30 May 1622. He later settled in de Witte Roos on the Nieuwendijck. He was a dienaer of the Waterland Community of Mennonites (Wijnman, Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vonden, p.56). On 23 February 1648, a pre-nuptial contract was signed between the painter Abraham van den Tempel, bachelor, assisted by his brother Jacob van den Tempel, Isaac and Hendrick Jacobsz. Roolen and Lubbert van Diephorst, all his uncles, with Catharina Pieters van Hoogemade, spinster, assisted by her father Pieter Gerritsz. van Hoogemade, Jan Vermeulen, her uncle and guardian, Balthes and Salomon Gerritsz. van Hogemade, and Seger Mol, also her uncles (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.223 of the Nachträge). The merchant Zeger Mol is cited in the NOTES to R 20783. He was the brother of Ursula Mol who married Matthijs Venckel. On 31 December 1635, Susanna Monstrael Adriaens (Monstreux), widow of Steven Bevelot, assisted by her neff (the wife of her nephew) Johannes de la Vigne de jonge, by reason of her advanced age and her inability to walk, named Dominicus Poulle (son of her nephew by marriage) to appear before the aldermen to sell a house to Dionys Belij (or Ballij) (a merchant dealing in Pater Nosters cited in the NOTES to R 27635) on the O.Z. Kerckstraet, now called Warmoesstraet (NA 991, fol. 44, Not. J. Bosch). Nicolas du Gardijn I (1572-1641), cited earlier, was a merchant, born in Emden, first noted in Amsterdam in 1593 (ibid. p. 301 and Prosopographic Data Base). He was the brother of Daniel du Gardijn, who was regent of the Walenweeshuis in 1636. Nicolaes du Gardijn I married Marguerite Balestel in 1593 and, after his first wife's death, remarried with Maria Reynst (Kretschmar, De portretten in het Walenweeshuis, Jaarboek C.B.G. 19(1965), p. 164). On 12 June 1596, Franchoijs van Hove and Salomon Voerknecht insinuated Nicolaes du Gardijn I, Isaack Bevelot's future father-in-law, along with some other insurers (assuradeurs) (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P. 178(1981), pp. 76-7), Franchoijs van Hove and Solomon Voerknecht were leading merchants of South Netherlandish origin, first noted in Amsterdam in 1585. Both signed the petition to the Vroedschap calling for the revocation of the prohibition on depositing money with cashiers in 1608 (Gelderblom, op. cit. and Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p.16). cit. p. 304). Voerknecht married Jannetge Jans Hooft, the daughter of the merchant Jan Pietersz. Hooft in 1597. In 1618, he joined a number of prominent personalities, including Bartolemeus Munter, to make false coins in Sedan (for which Munter was banned his lifelong from Amsterdam). Both Voerknecht and Hooft were Mennonists (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. xlvi and Roodenburg, Onder het censuur, p. 170). Francois van Hove of Amsterdam was a chief participant in the Kamer van Zeeland of the V.O.C. in 1623 (V. Enthoven, Een symbiose tussen koopman en regent in Ondernemers & bestuurders (Lesger and Noordegraaf ed.), Amsterdam, 1999, p. 231). On 29 August 1619, Nicolas du Gardyn (I) and Nicolas Balestel de jonge (of R 3475), were said to be neven of the three children of Guy de Sambroix, caffawercker, whose guardians they were appointed on this date (WK 5073/789). In 1631 a tax of 66 f. 13 st. was paid voor d'erffenisse van Nicolaes Balestede [Balestel] de jonge. The heirs of Balestede, lived on the Singel, near the corner of the Warmoesgracht (Kohier, fol. 10, p.4). Isaac Bevelot signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628 (as did Niclaes Balestel). On 16 April 1635, Sr. Isaac Beverlot, merchant, named Sr. Niclaes du Gardyn I (his father-in-law) to collect money from his debtors (NA 863, Not. van Zwieten). On 26 April of the same year, he drew up a procuration to sell his share in a ship (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). Samuel du Gardyn, cited above, was the brother of Nicolaes du Gardyn I. Nicolaes du Gardin II (the son of Nicolaes du Gardyn I) married Margrieta Willems Raap in 1647 (see the NOTES to R 8367).

Buyer FamilyPelle, Gerrit
Buyer NotesOn 19 May 1626, Gerrit Pelle and Catelijna de Labare had their child Weijntje baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Willem van Nefferen (DTB 40/346). On 4 September 1636, Catalyna de la Bare, assisted by Adriaen Braem, her chosen guardian (of R 25313), presented to the Orphan Chamber her two children, Jan, 9, and Vrouwtgen, 3 1/2, whose late father was Gerrit Pelle, aensprecker (mortuary, leader of a funeral procession) (WK 5073/789). Thus Gerrit Pelle not only rented out casket coverings but was a mortuary. In the same year 1636, his widow remarried (DTB 445/95). In 1625, a dispute arose over the renting of dootcleden der dooden (coffin covers) between a grave digger and the supervisor of the dog butchers (operzichter van de hondenslagers) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 583). This lot is probably identical with een paradijsgen in Rocourt's inventory.

BuyerHen[drick] de Vries op de Heeregracht bij Aldewerrelt
Buyer FamilyVries, Hendrick (Gerritsz.) de
Buyer NotesOn 4 November 1620, Hendrick de Vries, 22 years old, living on the Heeregracht, assisted by Govert de Vries, his uncle, was betrothed to Trijntje Henrix, 16, assisted by Sara Lenaerts(?) (DTB 425/119). The house Aldewerelt on the Heeregracht, near the Brouwersgracht (no. 104 today) was built by the rich merchant Jan van Aldewerelt about 1618 (E. van Houten, Grachtenboek, 1962, p. 59). Hendrick de Vries and Trijntje Henrix had their son Geret baptized in the N.K. on 12 September 1621 in the presence of Annetje Schenkels (DTB 40/140). Annetje Schenkels was probably the sister of Aeltge Schenkels, widow of Hendrick Hudde Rutgersz., the mother of Hendrick de Vries. Various goods were transferred by Hendrick de Vries to Aeltge Schenkels on 21 August 1635. Among the goods transferred were two portraits of Hendrick de Vries and his wife (INVNO 1210). Hendrick de Vries was the son of Aeltge Schenkels by her previous marriage to Gerard (Gerrit) de Vries (see the NOTES to R 23597). Hendrick de Vries, merchant in Amsterdam, together with his uncle Govert de Vries, freighted a ship to St. Martens on 21 December 1621 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), p. 512.) On 13 March 1625, The brothers Willem de Vries (of R 23597 of the present sale) and Heyndrick de Vries were said to be guardians over Claes, 20, and Andries, 16, the children of Heyndrick Hudde Rutgerts, whose mother was Aeltge Schenkels (WK 5073/789). Aeltgen died before 15 October 1652 when her post-mortem inventory was taken (NA 908, film 1145). By 3 November 1635, Hendrick de Vries had apparently remarried with Eelsgen de Wolf, formerly the widow of Abraham Claesz. Centen (NA 412B, fol. 302, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) (Abraham Claesz., merchant, whose wife was Olfgen (Elsgen?) de Wolff, made an appearance before the Orphan Chamber on 14 October 1627 (WK 5073/789)). On 20 June 1636, Dirck Apperloo, surgeon, 53 (or 59) and Jan Willemsz., lumber dealer (possibly of R 26595), 42, declared at the request of Jan Jacobsz. Coeckebacker (of R 30281) that they had heard from Hendrick de Vries that he had paid the petitioner (Jan Coeckebacker) in full (NA 478, film 6478, Not. Palm Matthijs). Hendrick de Vries was buried in the K.K.H. on 30 November 1655 (DTB 1151/100). The inventory of his putative son Frederick Hendricksz. de Vries was taken on 22 March 1656 (NA 1116, film 1292, Not. Justus van de Ven). The present lot may possibly be identical with een groot viercant stuck genaemt 'de spreeckwoorden'(by or after Pieter Bruegel the Elder ?) in Frederick de Vries's inventory. Hendrick Gerritsz. de Vries should not confused with the glassmaker Hendrick Anthonisz. de Vries cited in the NOTES to R 31132 or with Hendrick Claesz. de Vries, cited in the NOTES to R 27728). On 15 September 1626, Dirck Dircksz. Apperlo, surgeon, appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his children with the late Metentje Jans (WK 5073/789, fol. 97).

BuyerIJsack van Erckele in de Roode Hant tegen d'oude Appel Marckt
Buyer FamilyErckel(e) (Arckel), IJsack (Isaack) van
Buyer NotesOn 22 November 1608, IJsack van Erckel, from Wezel, 30 years old, living on the Kalckstraet, assisted by his uncles Willem and Jan Goijer, was betrothed to Cornelia van Es (DTB 762a/266). On 7 November 1610, Isaak van Erckel and Kornelia van Es had their son Joannes baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Willem Dircx (DTB 39/233). On 15 October 1615, the same couple had their daughter Cornelia baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Pieter Liefkint (DTB 39/474). In 1615, Isaack van Erckel had an account of 2 folios at the Wisselbank (3 in 1620) with his brother Godefryt van Erckel of R 31898 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 182.) Simon Hendricksz. Verwer Jonckheijn, who lived in de Rode Handt on N.Z. Wester Voorburgwal, and died in 1592, was married to Ael Elberts Goyer. The house was inherited by his son Elbert Simonsz. Jonckheijn (of INVNO 572) who died in 1618 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 55). IJsack Erckel may later have inherited de Rode Handt via Ael Elberts Goyer (his aunt ?). On 1 February 1650, Paulus van Besel, Johannes Verga, and Adolff Westhoven (Westhoff), merchants, declared that Henrick Bruyningh Wildelant had received 72 bolts of cloth from Isaack van Erckel, which had been steered to the Bank van Lening. The linens that had come from Isaack van Erckel were sold to Samuel Sautijn and were received by Eduard Very (NA 1818, film 2083, Not. Eggericx). Samuel Sautijn, of South Netherlandish origin, was born in 1593 and died in 1672; he became a citizen of Amsterdam on 22 May 1640 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 575). On 14 April 1661, Samuel Sautijn and the well-known international merchant Laurens de Geer submitted to arbitration a dispute concerning an ownership share in a gun powder mill (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.688). The transacton described above may have had to do with Van Erckel's forthcoming insolvency. On 17 February 1650, Paulus van Beselen, Johannes Verga, Jan Meulemans, Michiel Tielens, and Adollf Westhoven (or Westhoff), all creditors of Isaack van Erckel, named Cornelis van Rossen to collect money due to them in Utrecht (NA 1818, loc. cit.) On 10 December 1650, the insolvent inventory of Isaack van Erckel was taken. The inventory was poor and contained no works of art (DBK 5072/355, fol. 83-4). Isaack van Erckel was the brother of Govert (or Godefroy) van Erckel (or Arckel) of R 31898, who had a joint account with him at the Wisselbank.

BuyerFranchois Kaersgieter in de Nes over de Hol.
Buyer FamilyKaersgieter, Franchois (de)
Buyer NotesOn 23 December 1600, Frans Kaersegieter (signs Kaerseghieter), from Belle (Germany), painter, 27 years old, living on the Kalverstraet (2 years), whose stepfather and mother had declared their consent, was betrothed to Marie Clais, from London, 30, assisted by Jean Claix and Machteltgen Dickmans, her parents (DTB 409/302). On 15 June 1608, Frans Kaersgieter and Mary Klaes had their son Frans baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Frans Kornelisz. and Lijsbet Klaesdr. (DTB 4/245). Franchois (de) Kaersgieter was active in Amsterdam from 1590 to 1647. According to Bredius, he was also an art dealer, but the evidence for this (his testament of 1630 cited below) is not altogether convincing (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p.346 and Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 2055). On 10 June 1605, he signed a contract with Sybout Wynnes, from Bolswert, who would become his apprentice for two years, at the cost of 12.5 f. every six months (50 f. in all) (Bredius, op.cit. p. 2056). He paid 5 f. tax in 1631, at which time he indeed lived on the West side of the Nes, as he did when he bought this lot (Kohier, fol. 234v., p.54). He is known to have passed several testaments, from 1610 to just before his death in February 1647. He was still doing reasonably well financially in 1630 when he bequathed to his youngest son Christiaen (born in 1604, also a painter) his painter's equipment, 150 f. in cash, 900 f. in paintings (to be evaluated at prices that one pays werckluyden van dien plus 6 percent but no more). The other sons (Jan and Joris) were to get 300 f. in cash each (Bredius, op. cit. 2058). Frans's son Jan, born in 1603, married Elisabeth Imbrechts, a sister of Adriaen and Marten Imbrecht (of R 23627 and R 25169 resp.) His son Joris Kaersgieter was a painter and art dealer, born about 1602 (see R 25264 and Bredius, op. cit. p. 2063). Francois Kaersgieter was buried in Amsterdam on 28 February 1647. He left a very small estate consisting of a couple of coins, a few dozen napkins, several wator color canvases and one or two silver spoons (Bredius, op. cit. p. 2059).

BuyerAdriaen Imbrechs ofte de Gildeknecht
Buyer FamilyImbrechs (Imbrecht), Adriaen
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the painter Adriaen Imbrecht, born in in Antwerp, in 1593, active in Amsterdam from 1627 to 1649 (Briels, De Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 82). On 21 January 1630, Ariaen Inberichts, painter, 37, along with Annetje Ottens, Hendrick Cramers, Fredrick Schoorsteen, and Barent Joosten (the last two caertsetters), testified at the request of Esaias David Meurant, Latin schoolmaster, regarding Remonstrant gatherings in the house of Francoys Hermans (van Bergen) in the Warmoesstraet (Van Dillen, Documenten, 59(1938), p. 247-9). Esaias Meurant was the guardian of the children of Frederick Schoorsteen of INVNO 167 (R 83 of Montias1). He contributed a poem to the same Album Amicorum of Heiblocq as Rembrandt (Oud Holland 2(1884), p.27). Adriaen was the brother of Marten Imbrechtsz. of R 25169. He was the father of the merchant Vincent Meurant, cited in the NOTES to R 22104. J. Briels wrote that the present lot was bought by Adriaen Imbrecht, gildeknecht (rather than or the gildeknecht) (Vlaamse schilders, p. 343). In a document dated 23 April 1638, Barent Joosten was called swartveger (spearmaker, armorer) (NA 1022). The alternative buyer was the gildeknecht, the servant of the St. Lucasguild.

Buyer NotesOn 22 January 1616, Samuel de Nimay (signs Deijnijmaij), suijckerbacker, 24 years old, assisted by Adriaen de Nemy, living on the Ridderstraet, was betrothed to Cataline de Wilde, 28, assisted by her father Sebaelt de Wilde (de oude) (DTB 420/76). On Sebald de Wilde de oude, see R 30034. On 30 November 1621, Samuel de Nimey, 30 years old, widower of Catalijntje de Wilde, bancketbacker, was betrothed to Esther Peli, from Doornik, widow of Louijs de Lafelot (4 years), living in the Verwerijen (DTB 426/380). Finally, on 19 September 1652, Samuel de Nimaij, widower of Hester Pele, was betrothed to Klara Eelekars (DTB 470/177). The inventory of De Nimaij and Clara Elikaerts was taken on 19 September 1652 (INVNO 121). On 11 February 1625, some goods were sold by the Orphan Chamber at the request of Samuel de Niemay, including 6 little paintings and a gold ring, which was bought by Seger Pieters, goldsmith (of R 32330). The total value of the goods sold came to 285 f. 4 st. (WK 5073/950). On 20 October 1636, Samuel de Nimaij was said to be the guardian of Maria de Ville, the sister of Gilles de Ville of R 24344, one of the heirs of the late Pieter de Ville and Jannetgen Pele (NA 414A, fol. 384, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) Jannetgen Pele may have been the sister of Samuel de Nimaij's second wife Esther Pele. Samuel de Nimay was the brother of Marij de Nimay, the wife of the sufar refiner and art dealer Jan Tivaert. She died in 1623 (see the information on Jan Tivaert in R 20955). Adriaen de Nemy (Nimay) who assisted Samuel upon his betrothal in 1616 was probably his brother. Pieter de Nimay (of R 29298) was also his brother. On 15 January 1638, Samuel de Nimay, 45, and Abraham Fauconnier, 38, declared at the request of Agniet Fauconnier, widow of Pierre de Nimay, who had died in the East Indies, that she had three daughters, Susanna, Cecilia, and Jannetgen who were heirs ab intestato of Pierre de Nimay de jonge (of R 29298). Abraham Fauconnier, apothecary (cited in the TEXT of R 216) was a cousin of Pieter de Nimay (presumably by marriage, via Agnet Fauconnier) (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). On the death of Pieter de Nimay (de jonge), see the NOTES to R 29298.

BuyerJan Pietersz. Neckevelt wonende naest Medeblick op de Chingel bij de brouwer van 't Nachtglas
Buyer FamilyNeckevelt, Jan Pietersz.
Buyer NotesOn 24 January 1625, Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt, 24, from Muijden, assisted by his father Pieter Dircksz., living on the Heregracht, was betrothed to Annetje Lubberts, from Amsterdam, assisted by her daughter-in-law (snaat) Annetje Luycas, living on the Nieuwen Dijck (DTB 670/26). Jan's father Pieter Dircksz. Hoogsaet was a teacher of the Waterland Mennonite community. Neckevelt was taxed 40 f. in 1631 (along with his wife). He was living at the time on the Keysersgracht close to the Brouwersgracht (Kohier, fol. 190v, p. 44). He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 6 May 1637, three months after tulip bulbs attained their highest prices, Dirck Arentsz. Bosch insinuated Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt claiming that he had sold him some tulips, of which he now wanted Neckevelt to take delivery. He demanded compensation for any possible loss (NA 674, fol. 186vo, Not. J. Warnaertsz., Extracten, as supplied by Anne Goldgar). On 9 May 1637, Dirck Arentsz. Bosch insinuated Anthony de Man for his failure to pay 1,200 f. for tulips he had bought (Posthumus, Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 18(1934), p. 236, as supplied by Anne Goldgar). Dirck Arentsz. Bosch, born in Amsterdam in 1615 (he was only 22 years old at the time of these depositions), was the son of Arent Dircksz. van den Bosch of R 8246. He was married to Lijsbeth Ansloo, the daughter of Joost Claesz. Ansloo (mennonite cloth merchant, probably a brother of Claes Claesz. Ansloo de oude of INVNO 1134), who was born in 1588 and was buried in Amsterdam in November 1635 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 81(1964), col. 336). He should not be confused with Dirck Bosch, silversmith, who was said to be 31 years old on 2 March 1651 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 574). This is confirmed by another deposition of 5 September 1662, where he was said to be 41 years old (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1785). Dirck Arentsz. Bosch, who was actually five years younger. In February 1645, Jan Pietersz. Neckeveld, together with many other Amsterdam merchants, including Dirck Bosch, signed a petition calling for strict enforcement of the currency regulations of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 89-90). On 7 June 1657, Trijntje Jans Hoogsaet, living in the Haerlemmerstraet next to the Eenhornsluis, passed her testament. She named as her heirs her neef (cousin) Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt, son of Pieter Dircksz. Hoogsaet, her neven Cornelis Claesz. and Dirck Claesz. Hoogsaet (sons of a sister of her father Jan Dircksz.), and some other relatives. By a codicil dated 8 December 1657, she left her portrait painted by Rembrandt and that of her deceased brother Jan Jansz. Hoogsaet to the three-year old son of the afore-said Cornelis Claesz. Hoogsaet named Jan. This child, who lived from 1654 to circa 1713, eventually became a pupil of De Lairesse. He did not, however, inherit the portrait. Trijn Jans married a third time with the surgeon Jan Schildt, who became her universal heir. Trijn Jans Hoogsaet was the daughter of the compass maker Jan Dircksz. and of Femmetje Jans Branderis of INVNO 875. Jan and Pieter Dircksz. were sons of Dirck Pietersz. van Nierop, cited above (Wijnman, Rembrandt's portret van Catrina Hoogsaet (1657) in Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, 1959, pp. 21-2 and 32-3). On Catrina (Trijntje) Jans Hoogsaet, the second wife of the dyer Hendrick Jacobsz. Rooleeuw, see also the NOTES to R 23558. On 7 May 1658, Jan Pietersz. Neckevelt bought a house on the Keisersgracht (no. 62) from the heirs of Hillegont Jans Codde, widow of Huybert Elbertsz. Krieck, for 16,200 f., together with his son-in-law Harmen Gerritsz. Blaeupot. Neckevelt, like Jan Dircksz. Hoogsaet, was a Mennonite (Maandblad Amstelodamum 62(1975), p. 25).

BuyerCornelis Dommer op de Chingel naest de Croon van Polen
Buyer FamilyDommer, Cornelis [Willemsz.]
Buyer NotesCornelis Dommer was the son of Willem Ysbrantsz. Dommer. Both father and son (who was only about 11 years old), living on the Rockin in the Hooge Huijs, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (95/18 f 715). On 8 November 1619, Cornelis Dommer, 23, assisted by his mother Neeltje Henricksdr., living on the Rockin, was betrothed to Maritje Pieters Noorman, 29, assisted by her godmother Teuntje Jans Normans, living in de Houttuynen. She signs Norms (DTB 668/287). Cornelis Willemsz. Dommer was a lumber dealer (houtcoper). In 1631, he contributed 1000 f. to a joint project for setting up sawing mills in the country side around Amsterdam. A few months later, he invested 2000 f. in the project (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 696 and 722). In 1631, he was taxed 25 f., at which time he lived on the North side of the Meulensteech (Kohier, fol. 57 vo., page 14). The house named de Croon van Polen was indeed located on the Singel, near the Corsgenpoort (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 214.) On 24 November 1634, Symon van Alckemade, 49, Leendert Cornelisz. Rave, 52, and Cornelis Dommer, 39, all merchants, made a declaration at the request of Claes van Marcken (a lumber dealer who contributed 1,000 f. to the setting up of sawing mills in 1630) concerning the conditions under which passports given to travel to Antwerp were given (NA 694B, film 4980, p. 906, Not. J. Warnaerts). In February 1645, Cornelis Dommer signed a petition with many other Amsterdam merchants calling for the strict enforcement of the currency regulations of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 90). Cornelis Dommer was buried in the N.K. on 3 November 1653 (DTB 1055/27).

BuyerCornelis Abba
Buyer FamilyAbba (Abbas), Cornelis [Dircxsz.]
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Cornelis Dirxsz. Abba, 1604-1675, was brewer on the Singel in de Vijffhoeck. He was the son of Dirck Adriaensz., born in Loosdrecht, who became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1589. He married Sara Bartholomeus van der Wiere on 22 November 1626, born in 1607, daughter of Bartholomeus Jansz. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 418). He paid a tax 50 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Wester Achterburchwal (Kohier, fol. 290v, p. 66). It is not known whether he was already brewer at the time of this sale. (The first document noted by Van Dillen signed by Cornelis Abba as brewer is dated 1637 (Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), p. 165)). Cornelis's father, Dirck Adriaensz, 1550-1633, was already brewer on the Singel by the Molensteeg in 1601. At his death he left a fortune of 73,000 f. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 417). Cornelis Abba was commissioner of Marital Affairs for 25 years (in 1649 he and Schellinger summoned Rembrandt on behalf of Geertie Dircx) and commissioner of the Desolate Boedelskamer in 1658 when Rembrandt was in financial trouble (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 418). From 1639 to 1646, he was one of the regents of the Rasphuis. He was portrayed with other regents in an unattributed group portrait in the first half of the 1640s (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, 1975/79, p. 401.) His sister Aeltje Dircks (alias Aeltje Pater) married the rich merchant Jan de Wael (II), who was long a burgomaster of Haarlem and was imprisoned in the Castle of Loevestein in 1650. His brother named Jacob Dircksz. Brouwer, alias Eenhorn (of R 7707) became substitute sheriff. Another brother named Albert Dircksz. Pater (cited in the NOTES to R 7702) was a member of the Raad of Amsterdam, then alderman, and ended up as burgomaster and colonel of the militia (1654). Cornelis Abba's son, named Bartholomeus Abba, also known as Bartel, was born in July 1641. He became a doctor in both rights (medicine and law) and a poet, who was praised in a poem by Vondel. He was also acquainted with Gerard de Lairesse (Wijnman, De Amsterdamse Bohemien Mr. Bartholomeus Abba door Vondel in een lofdicht geprezen in Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, 1959, pp. 150-1).

Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jan Pellecorn or Pellicorne II, was the son of Jan Pellicorne I who was a grain merchant in Leiden, where he settled after immigrating from Antwerp. Jan Pellecorn de jonge, born in Leiden in 1597, was associated in a firm with Pieter van Ceulen, which did business with the Near East. His father, still living in Leiden, invested 2400 f. in V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 66 and 211). The son was taxed 360 f. in 1631, at which time he indeed lived on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 61v). He married Susanna van Collen (van Ceulen) on 17 February 1626. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 645). On 11 June 1628, Johan de Pellicorne de jonge and Susanna van Ceulen had their child Caspar baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Catrijna du Bois (DTB 40/455). Both are dated about 1634 (Schwartz, Rembrandt, his life, his paintings, pp. 160-1). Jan Pellecorn was one of the creditors of Jacques de Coesenaer who came to an agreement with his creditors on 23 March 1647. He owed Pellecorn 1,387 f. 16 st. (DBK 5072/872). Jan Pellicorne did business in Moscovy in company with Pieter van Ceulen around 1636 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 275).

Buyer NotesElbert Dirxsz. Del or Dell was the son of Dirck Claesz. Duyvel, a famous geux de mer who took part in the capture of den Briel in 1572. Elbert Dell was born in Alphen on 15 August 1595 and was buried in the O.K. on 7 May 1666. In 1630, he was a wine dealer. On 1 June 1630, Christoffel Croesen, 40, Elbert Dircksz. Dell, 34, Isaack van Gherwen, 50, and Jacobus de Ghyselaer, 54, Lambert Prinsen (name crossed out), 35, all five (actually four), members of the wine dealers' confrerie, complained about the comportment of a farmer of the wine tax named Pieter Jansz. van Loon (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P., 78(1933), p. 709). Del was a regent of the Spinhuis of Amsterdam from 1640 until 1661 and an auctioneer (venduemeester) of the admiralty in Amsterdam and churchmaster of the Suidkerck in 1661. He married Cornelia Dircksdr. Spiegel (1606-1646) on May 2, 1627 (a month and a half before the present auction). Cornelia was the younger sister of the receiver-general of the Admiralty Elbert Spiegel. His daughter Elisabeth (1628-1660) married Ferdinand Bol, the painter, on 23 October 1653. Elbert Spiegel was the father of Elisabeth Spiegel, who married Wigbert Slicher (the grandson of Anthony Slicher of R 20039). Wigbert Slicher and Elisabeth Spiegel had themselves portrayed as Venus and Paris by Ferdinand Bol in 1656 (Ekkart in Simiolus 29(2002), p.15, Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 260 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 222). In the 1631 Kohier, Dell is not registered under that name but apparently under the name Elbert Dirxsz, Duijvel, paying 20 f. He was said to be living on the East side of the (O.Z.) Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 145v., p. 34) In R 7702, dated 5 January 1628, he was said to be living on the Oudezyds Voorburchwal naest het Blaeuwe Huys (which was owned by Reynier Paeuw I).

Buyer FamilyJerbier [Gerbier], IJsrael (Israel)
Buyer NotesOn 11 December 1610, IJsrael Gerbier, from Amiens, 25, living (5 years) on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Catharina Kieff, 26, living on the Boomensloot, assisted by her mother Anneken Liesvelt (DTB 414/433). Iserael Gerbier and Catterinne Kief had a child, named Isaac, baptized in the Walse Kerck, on 2 September 1616, in the presence of Pierre Goudet and Cornelia Kief (DTB 130/33). Cornelia Kieff, the sister of Catharina Kieff, was betrothed to the painter and art dealer Jan Basse (of R 7637) on 19 May 1611. On 23 August 1614, Israel Geerbier gave a procuration to Cosimo de Moucheron ( a brother of Melchior de Moucheron, the probable buyer of R 21230). Cosimo, the brother of Melchior de Moucheron (probably of R 3130) was a dyer of silk cloth. Cosimo was said to be impetrant of the inventory of his later father Pieter de Moucheron (NA 377, fol. 321). In 1631, Israel Garbier (or his heirs, see below) paid a tax of 10 f. He was indeed living on the Rosegracht, as he was at the time of the auction (Kohier, fol. 312vo., p. 71). Israel Gerbier was buried on 14 May 1630 (DTB 1130/34).

He was 24 years old. He was assisted by his brother Hans (Pietersz.) de Bitter (DTB 421/26). Both Hans and Pieter were the sons of Pieter de Bitter I. On 15 August 1628, Pieter de Bitter II sought to be employed by the Weeskamer as administrator over some estates. His brother-in-law David de Barry in Haarlem put up 2000 f. as a guarantee in case of his (de Bitter's) poor administration (WK 5073/903). He was successful in this request. On 23 April 1629, he was named guardian over the children of the late Anthony Smijters (of INVNO 619) in replacement of Mr. Hugo Cole, schoolmaster, and of Samuel Maronnier (WK 5073/513, fol. 43)). On 1 March 1630, he appeared as guardian ordered by the Orphan Chamber over Maritgen, the daughter of Carsten Cornelisz. wood worker (WK 5073/789). On 23 May 1633, Samuel Maronnier, sworn broker, 50, made a deposition at the request of Louis Luce (of R 20393) regarding six bales of raw silk that had been bought by Luce from Sr. Hendrick Witacker (NA 604B, Not. J. Warnaerts). The honorable Samuel Maronier and Hugo Coolen were still administrators of the estate of Anthony Smijters when they transferred 29 f. to Nicolaes Coenen on 10 December 1635 (NA 477, fol. 466, Not. Palm Matthijs). Soon thereafter, Pieter de Bitter was named guardian over Jurriaen Vredericx, the child left by Vrederick Jeuriaensz. Jurriaen was the grandchild and one of the heirs of Maritge Teunis, the wife of the painter Barent Teunisz. (Drent) (R 21348), whose inventory was taken on 25 January 1629 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 287). He was also guardian over the children of Femmetge Teunis, the sister of Maritge Teunis (INVNO 940, R 842 of Montias1). There is a portrait of Pieter de Bitter (I or II) in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden who may be the buyer of this lot (Oud Holland 31(1913), p. 239). Before being a broker, Samuel Maronier was a retail merchant, living in Out Antwerpen. He bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (51/86 F 400).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Luegs Conijn]
Buyer FamilyConijn, Luegs (Lucas) Pietersz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Lucas Pietersz. Conijn, was the son of Pieter Cornelisz. Conijn and of Aeltje Jans. He was baptized in Amsterdam on 27 March 1597 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 55(1968), p. 158). Pieter Cornelisz. was the son of Cornelis Garbrantsz. (Conijn) (probably of R 31524) and of Jannitge Pieters. Cornelis Garbrantsz. was the brother of Maritge Garbrants, the mother of the poet and playwright Bredero (of R 28859). On 15 March 1622, when Lucas Pietersz. Conijn, assisted by his mother Anneken Teunis, living on the Middeldam, was betrothed to Cornelia Rapaast (Raephorst), assisted by her father Mathijs Raphaast, living op 't Water, he declared that he was 24 years old (DTB 427/54). When Lucas Pietersz. Conijn, living op de Hoef, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery in 1606, he was only 9 years old (GAA, 20/35 F 138). He was taxed 100 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Westervoorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 275v., p. 63). In 1645 Govert Flinck painted a militia group portrait in which Lucas Conijn appeared as Lieutenant in the company of Albert Bas (Oud Holland, vol.21 (1903), p. 92). He was also portrayed by Jacob A. Backer in a group portrait of the Regenten, de binnenvader en de binnenmoeder van het Nieuwezijdshuiszitten-aalmoezeniershuis, of which he was one of the regents from 1630 to 1652 (A. Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, 1975/1979, p. 21.) With his second wife Annetgen Teunis, he passed his testament before Not. Jacob Jacobsz. on 17 April 1640 (NA 422, film 6438, fol. 330-331). Lucas Conijn was buried in the O.K. on 5 March 1652 (DTB 1046/16).

BuyerReijmont de Smith
Buyer FamilySmith, Reijmont de
Buyer NotesOn 30 January 1626, Remont de Smith witnessed the baptism of Elisabeth, daughter of Jerosme Victorij and Jacqueline Hiolle. The other witnesses were Jan Dablin of INVNO 491 and Margerite Hiole (DTB 130/202). Jerosme (or Jeronimus) Victorij was an important tulip grower. Jacqueline Hiolle was the daughter of Jacqueline de Cocq (of INVNO 249) and of Esaias Hiolle and the sister of Isaack Hiolle of R 23398, as well presumably as of Margerite Hiole. The latter was married to Caspar van de Venne, who may have been the brother of Saer van de Venne, who was married to Isaack Hiol(l)e (NA 695A, film 4981, 3 April 1639). Reijmont de Smith, was taxed 125 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the West side of the Heeregracht (Kohier, fol. 293v, p. 67). On 21 September 1634, Johannes van der Rosieren (cited in R 30000), 52, Anthony Ariaensz. Coninck (cited in R 121 of Montias1), 48, Jeremias Coesaert, spices merchant (cited in R 33388), 41, and Reymont de Smit, merchant 36, declared at the request of the honorable Guilliam van de Helst and Daniel Martens (both cited in R 28860) that a letter they had been shown was authentic (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 21 March 1635, Francoijs Heldewier from Amsterdam declared that some time ago he had come from Brussels with no means of his own. He went with his wife and sister to Reymont de Smit, a relative (familielid), who lent him 1800 f. to start a tulip bulb business on his (Smit's) account. They were given clothing and lodging which would be paid for from the proceeds of the business (NA 670, pak 33, Not. J. Warnaertsz., Extracten, with thanks to Anne Goldgar). According to a document of 14 December 1644 (GAA, NA 689, not. Jan Warnaertsz.), Francois Heldewier, living in the house Clara of Reijmont de Smit, merchant in Amsterdam, declared that he owed Smit, pursuant to an act of 21 March 1635, 1800 f. and also another 4455 f. en 10 st. for tulip bulbs that Smit had bought and transferred to him, Heldewier. De Smit maintained all rights to the bulbs and eventual offsets (klisters) (NA 679, fol. 1644, Not. Jan Warnaertsz., Extracten, also supplied by Anne Goldgar). In 1670, Reymont de Smith was cited as a guardian of the children of Joan Wolters and Sara de Geer (daughter of Louis de Geer) in the INTRO of INVNO 179. Joan Wolters (1611-1669) and Sara de Geer were the parents of Louis Wolters, who married Susanna Maria Walens, the daughter of Nicolaes Walens (on whom see the NOTES to R 20599) and of Susanna Latfeur. Walens remarried with Barbara Wolters Stevensdr., widow of Raymond de Smeth Joostensz., on 4 May 1666. After the death of Susanna Maria Walens, Louis Wolters remarried with Cornelia Quina, born 1652, the daughter of Jacob Quina, verfkoper, and of Adriana Quina, on 12 July 1681 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 517). This Jacob Quina was probably the second of this name (1621-1680) (see the NOTES to R 30652). A portrait of Jacob Quina (1621-1680) and Adriana Quina (?) by Ferdinand Bol dated 1655 has been preserved in the Van de Poll-Wolters-Quina Stichting in Hattum (Prijst de lijst, Exh.Cat., Rijksmuseum, 1984, pp.12-3 (ill.)). From the arguments adduced by Van Thiel it is doubtful whether Adriana Quina was the daughter of Carel Quina II baptized under this name in 1624 (she would clearly have been younger than the woman portrayed by Bol).
