BuyerJan Jacobsz. Grol op de Wael in de bonte kraijen
Buyer FamilyGrol(l), Jan Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesOn 12 May 1627, Jan Jacobsz. Grol, from Amsterdam, 21 years old, assisted by his father Jacob Janssen, living op Vloijenbrugh, was betrothed to Aeffje Jacobs Blaeuenhelm, 18, assisted by her guardian and uncle Jacob Jacobsz. Seeuw and Trijntje Jacobs, her sister (DTB 432/189). Jan Jacobsz. Groll and his wife were taxed 60 f. in 1631, at which time they lived op 't Water (Kohier, fol. 70vo., p. 17). At this time he was renting the soap-boiling works de twee Cronen on the Damrak (thus op 't Water) from Jan Jansz. van der Cleij (1597-1639), a retail hat merchant but also a major speculator in real estate (probably the brother of Paulus Jansz. van der Cleij of R 20050). Jan Jacobsz. Grol became a member of the soap-boilers' college in that same year. He was buried in the N.K. on 12 April 1633 (DTB 1054/73). After his death, Philips Laurens of R 20239 took over his soap-boiling works. In 1640, the works were acquired by the goldsmith Adriaen ter Haer of R 18942 (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 83(1991), p. 65-6).

BuyerJacobus Laurentius
Buyer FamilyLaurentius, Jacobus
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the predikant Jacobus Laurentius (1586-1646), the older son of Laurens Jacobsz., a book publisher who died in 1603, and of Marritge Philips. Boom, who was related to several members of the Vroedschap (including burgomaster Abraham Boom). Marritge remarried with Hendrick Jacobsz. Staets, city carpenter and contractor (of R 27495). Jacobus Laurentius was the brother of the book publisher Hendrick Laurentius (1588-1649), at whose request the goods in this sale were auctioned off. He studied in Leiden, Heidelberg, and Geneva, and was named predikant in Amsterdam in 1621. He was a fiery opponent of Jesuits and Remonstrants (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 80(1988), p. 31) On 14 January 1612, Jacobus Laurentius, student in theology, 25, was betrothed to Grietge Wybrants, 21, assisted by her mother Tryn Jans (DTB 416/287). He paid a tax of 60 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 7v, p.3). His niece Grietge Hendricks married Claes Jacobsz. Blaeuhelm on 19 April 1644 (see the death inventory of Niclaes Jacobsz. Blaeuhenhelm, INVNO 211).

BuyerDr. Bontius
Buyer FamilyBontius, Dr.
Buyer NotesDr. Bontius may be the son of Reinierus Bontius, professor of medicine in Leiden, the personal physician of Prins Maurits, who died in 1623 (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 141). Dr. R. Bontius signed the entry for Rembrandt in the Catalogus Studiorum of the University of Leiden on 20 May 1620 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 51). There was also an attorney named Hendrick Bontius who, together with Abraham Davidsz. van der My (the father of Robbert van der Mije of R 19463), was appointed as guardian over the children of Rutgert Cornelisz. and Teuntgen Symonsdr. by the Orphan Chamber on 14 September 1616 (WK 5073/513, fol. 157). Dr. Bontius may be identical with Johannes Bontius. predicant in Waverveen, who was 25 when he was betrothed to Anne Ruts from Amsterdam, 22, on 2 March 1626. He was assisted by his father Jasper Vos, she by her mother Annetje de Vos (DTB 432/584). Finally, there was a Mr. Artus Bontius, schoolmaster in the Latin School cited in an Orphan Chamber act of 11 November 1625 (WK 5073/549).
