BuyerDirck van Millegem in de Nes in de Coningh David
Buyer FamilyMillegem, Dirck van
Buyer NotesOn 20 June 1620, Dirck van Millegem (signs Millighen), from Utrecht, 26, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Susanna Fremau, from Franckfort, 30, no living parents, assisted by her sister Sara Fremeau, living in the Verwersstraet (DTB 424/283). Sara Fremeau (Vermou or Fourmau) was the wife of the late dyer Jacques de Ville, whose goods were sold at this sale. On 3 October 1623, Dirck van Millegem and Susanna Fermous had their daughter Marija baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Melser Housman (DTB 413/83). On 27 November 1624, Dirck van Milligem, widower of Susanna Fourmau, assisted by his good friends Servaes Degens and Hendrick van de Sanden, signed a pre-nuptial contract with the honorable Judith van den Casteel, assisted by her good acquaintance Anna Hagens, the honorable Nicolaes Cocques (of R 20336), and signor Hans van Soest (II or III), her good friends (NA 21S, Not. Salomon Hendricx). On Hans van Soest II and III, see the TEXT to R 1074 of Montias1. Dirck van Millegem paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, at which time he lived in the Nieuwe Hoochstraet, North side (Kohier, fol. 219v, p.50). He was probably a dyer. On 23 February 1631, Philips Fonteijn, boratwercker (of R 20084) and Dirck van Millegem declared they had had turned over to Jan Courten, old clothes seller, a house near the Doelensluijs where Pieter ter Haer (of R 21042) was presently inhabiting (NA 910, Piter Eyloff).

BuyerGillis de Ville
Buyer FamilyVille, Gillis de
Buyer NotesThe buyer cannot be Gilles de Ville, son of Jacques de Ville, the owner of the goods sold. This Gillis de Ville was baptized in January 1617. He would then have been only 12 at the time of the sale. The buyer is likely to be Gilles de Ville, the nephew of the painter Jacques de Ville (of R 36770) and the brother of the dyer Guilliam de Ville. Gilles de Ville was a dyer on the Verwersgraft in 't Moriaenshooft. On 6 August 1635, the eersame Gillis de Ville declared that about four years ago he had passed an obligation in favor of brother Guillame de Ville for 500 f. He had now settled with his brother (NA 412A , fol. 78, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) On 20 October 1636, Gilles and Guilliam de Ville, together with Samuel de Nimaij (of R 23590), as guardian over Maria de Ville, and Jean de Ville, all brothers and sister, and heirs of the late Pieter de Ville and Jannetge Pele, acknowledged receiving 120 f., out of an inheritance of 600 f., from the hands of Pieter Gabry, merchant, their uncle (NA 414A, not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) In January 1644, he acknowledged a debt for rent of 414 f. which he owed to his uncle the painter Jacques de Ville and transferred to him some vats and kettles (dyer's equipment) as security. He died in 1664 (C. van Aspermont, De Amsterdamsche schilders ... De Ville, Oud Holland, 17(1899), pp. 88 and 94).

BuyerBarent Poelman de voogd
Buyer FamilyPoelman, Barent
Buyer NotesAfter the death of the dyer Jacques de Ville, married to Sara Vermou, the painters Jacques de Ville and Barent Poelman, who were co-guardians of their five children, requested that his goods be sold at public auction (the present sale, on whose INTRO see R 532 of Montias1.) Barent Poelman was married to Anna Vermou (or Fermous), who is likely to have been the sister of the late Sara Vermou. On 20 April 1631, Barent Poelman and Anneken Fermous had their daughter baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jacques de Vile (the painter of R 36770) and Aeltje Stock (DTB 6/303). On 13 March 1633, the same parents had their son Ysaack baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Claes Ryckerts and Eva Hermans (DTB 6/362). On 26 April 1637, Anna, daughter of Barent Poelman saliger (deceased) and Anna Fermous was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jacques de Vile (the painter) and Anna Meus (DTB 7/130). On 1 November 1639, Annetge Vermours, assisted by Claes Rycx (Ryckers), her guardian, presented her daughter Anneken, 2 years old, to the Orphan Chamber and declared that she was entitled to 200 f. for the inheritance from her late father the painter Barent Poelman. Claes Ryckerts (probably a close relative), who was a witness to the baptism of Barent's son Ysaack in 1633, stood surety for the payment of the sum (WK 5073/789, film 4998). On 3 November 1639, Annetje Vermou, widow of Barent Poelman, was betrothed to Guilliaem du Gardijn, painter, widower of Jannetje Isbrants (DTB 452/265). (Guilliaem du Gardijn, son of Neeltjen Jaspers, had married Jannetje Isbrants, from Leiden, on 19 May 1618 when he was 22 years old (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 143). According to the prenuptial contract of 2 November 1639, she brought goods valued at 700 f. to the marriage, while he brought only 300 f. worth. Even this sum was nominal only: the sale of his goods fetched so little, he declared on 6 December 1640 that his heirs could assume, after his death, that he had brought nothing to the marriage (Oud Holland 8(1890), p. 234). Guillaume du Gardijn, who lived on the corner of the Uijlenburgsteeg, was Roman Catholic, whereas his new bride was Reformed. Guillaume joined the Reformed church, as he confessed to the kerkeraad, in order to get the woman, but he soon began to make derogatory remarks about the church. He beat his wife, who asked the church council how long this torture (martelen) would last. He eventually reverted to his original Catholicism. In 1646, he was declared by the kerkeraad to be irredeemable (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, p. 159). Anna and Sara Vermou may be related to the painter Guilliam Fremouts or Fremout, alias Strazio Veluto, who was the first husband of Gabriel Metsu's mother Jacquemyntge Garniers (Oud Holland 30(1912), p. 125). On the paintings of Guilliam du Gardijn, see Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, Twee olieverfschetsen van Guilliam de Gardijn, een toeschrijving met verrassende gevolgen, pamphlet, Alkmaar, 1995.

BuyerAdam Duijffgen in de Schelvis in de buert
Buyer FamilyDuijffgen [or Duijffkens], Adam
Buyer NotesOn 26 March 1626, Adam Duijfgens, from Metz, camelottier (maker of cotton cloth called camelot), 25, assisted by his father Aert Duijfgens, living in the Bloetstraet, was betrothed to Sara Pancras, from Amsterdam, 23, assisted by her sister Maijken Pancras, living in the Bloetdwarsstraet (DTB 43/104). His father, Aert Duijfgens (or Duyffkens), also a camelottier, as widower of Rachel Harel, was betrothed to Nelletje van Immen on 15 October 1626 (DTB 431/426). In several contracts dated 1610 and 1611, Aert Duyffken was involved in the printing of cloth according to a new invention. In one such contract he undertook to print cloth for Gilbert de Flines (II), the brother of Philips de Flines of R 25445 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), pp. 700-1). In another, he contracted with Jacob Versteegh Stevensz. (the father of the clockmaker Hendrick Versteegh, of R 29445) on 8 December 1618 to set up a cloth printing establishment for the benefit of merchants, shopkeepers, and all others (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 261). On 11 November 1628, Laurens del Court, temporarily in Amsterdam, acknowledged having received on commission in the preceding year 1627 from the hands of Aert Duyfkens eight bolts of printed silk of various colors belonging to Aert Duyfkens and Caspar Cambier, half and half (Van Dillen, op. cit. p. 664). After the death of Aert Duijfkens, his inventory was taken on 18 January 1630 at the request of Nicolaes Cocques, which included a number of paintings without attributions, including a portrait of the children and two specimens of calligraphy (NA 372, Not. Willem Cluit,) In a deposition dated 4 July 1630, Nelletgen van Immen, widow of Aert Duyfkens, appeared with Adam Duyfkens, the son of Aert Duyfkens, to sign a contract to set up a company to manufacture camelotten (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 718). In 1632, he set up another enterprise with Jacob Pancras (his father-in-law) to press and print cloth. Jacob Pancras was the second husband of Nelletge van Immen (ibid. p. 822). On 11 December 1628, Philips Serurier, 52, Adam Duyfkens, 28, and Jan Huygen, 28, declared at the request of Jan Plukee (Plouque) that they had well known Laurens de la Court and knew pertinently that he was in poor health (NA 834). On 23 June 1637, Jean Plouque, 50, and Adam Duijfkens, 37, camelottiers, testified at request of Lenart van Boom, as husband and guardian of the widow left by Laurens del Court, that they had found Laurens del Court dead in the house of Cambier (NA 996). On 1 July 1636, Adam Duijfgens, meester camelottier, 36, Hendrick Hendricksz. Goet Vrient, cleermacker, 28, Jacob Nicolaes, schoelapper, 28, Bertram Hurlo, passementwercker, 26, made a deposition in which they declared having known a neighbor named Reynier Louwet (NA 521, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). Hendrick Hendricksz. Goet Vrient may have been the brother of Catharina Hendricks Vriendt of INVNO 451. Adam Duijffgen was buried in the Z.K. on 10 August 1661 (DTB 1091/75).
