BuyerSteven Versteghen d'soon
Buyer FamilyVersteghen, Steven
Buyer NotesSteven Verstegen was the son of Jacob Stevensz. Verstege who was a shooter in the company of Adriaen Pietersz. Raep in 1603 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 134). On 18 January 1633, Steven Verstegen, bachelor, bridegroom-to-be, assisted by his father Jacob Verstegen, Hendrick Verstegen, his brother (of R 29445), and the heer burgomaster Hillebrant Schellinger, his cousin, on one side, and Maria Schrevels, bride-to-be, assisted by her mother Ann Hagens, Maximiliaen van Geel (of R 21282), Hans van Soest (II or III) and Jan Moors (cited in the NOTES to R 25427), on the other, signed a pre-nuptial contract (NA 910, notary Pieter Eyloff). Note that Hans van Soest who assisted Maria Schrevels is probably the same individual who assisted Judith van den Casteel when she signed her pre-nuptial contract with Dirck van Millegem of R 23643 (in view of the presence of Anna Hagens in both contracts), but it remains unclear whether he was the second or the third of this name. Earlier, on 22 December 1630, Steven Versteghen had been a witness to the baptism of Baijken Verstege, the daughter of his brother, the clockmaker Hendrick Versteeg (see R 29445). He apparently remarried with Maria Boortens (born 1627) after she was widowed from her first marriage with the notary Salomon van Nieuwland, the son of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (before 1661) (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 68 and p. 166). On 11 September 1663, Maria Boortens, wife of Sr. Steven Versteegen, declared before an Amsterdam notary that she had bought a house in Haarlem for 5,000 f. (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 68). The individual named Maria Boortiens, whose death inventory was taken on 14 April 1654 (INVNO 1227) cannot be identical with the wife of Steven Versteegen. The former's daughter, named Helena Abrahams, cannot be the daughter of either Salomon van Nieulandt or of Steven Versteegen (NA 1856, fol. 713 and foll., Not. N. Kruijs).

BuyerSamuel Hespel
Buyer FamilyHespel, Samuel
Buyer NotesSamuel Hespel (or Haspel) was the son of Nicolaes Hespel, the first husband of Nicole Wijmer, who remarried with the goldthread drawer Pieter le Febure of the present sale. Nicolaes Hespel died in 1615. On 21 March 1637, Samuel Haspel, goutdraettrecker (gold thread drawer), 34 years old, living in the Calverstraet, was betrothed to Clara van Belle, living in Rotterdam (DTB 446/97). It is worthy of note that Samuel Hespel purchased this lot between his betrothal and his marriage. He was still living in the Calverstraet on 30 July 1638 when he testified, along with some other neighbors in the Calverstraet (see the NOTES to R 25264) concerning two brothels in the neighborhood (NA 696A, film 4982). On 10 November 1638, he contracted to employ Hendrick Dael for 54 stuivers a day in the first year, 3 gulden a day in the second, and 72 stuivers in the third in his goldthread business (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 209.)

BuyerJeremias Hagens
Buyer FamilyHagens, Jeremias
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jeremias Hagens, was a pastrybaker (pasteybacker), living in the Pieter Jacobssteegh, as is indicated in R 33476 of 1637 and in his two bankrupt inventories of 1643 and 1646, in the house de Swaen. On 10 April 1610, Jeremijas Hagens and his wife Catlijna Hagens had their child Marija baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pieter le Feber (the late owner of the goods sold at this sale), Jacob Moock and Marija Marisal (DTB 7/83). On 23 June 1630, Jeremie Hagens and Catrijna Lefebre had their daughter Catrina baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Catrina Pels (DTB 41/85). Hagens's wife Catrijna Lefebre was the daughter of Pieter le Febvre. He may have remarried after the death of Catrijna Lefebre since there is a mention in his 1646 inventory of a portrait of his first wife. On 29 July 1632, Jeremias Hagens, 34 years old, together with Jan Broeckhuysen (probably of R 20370), 40, Hendrick Huijer, innkeeper, 27, and Casper Aldervelt, 32), all neighbors of Jan Cornelisz. Neck, made a deposition about a dispute that occurred in their neighborhood (NA 371, fol. 96). On 30 January 1636, Jeremias Hagens, pasteybacker, acknowledged a debt of 600 f. to Guillaum du Pire (of R 36435), for which he pledged all his goods (NA 642, fol. 131). On 20 February 1637, Jeremias Haghens, pastry baker, declared that his brother-in-law Garbrant Warmenhuijsen, notary in The Hague, had transferred to his benefit an obligation for 183 f. issued by Pieter le Febure (NA 521). Pieter le Febure was the father of Susanna le Febure. Warmenhuijsen was the second husband of Susanna le Febure (see the NOTES to R 25258). On 23 February 1639, Jeremias Hagens, pastry cook, living in the Pieter Jacobsstraet, acknowledged a debt of 400 f. to Rachelle Capel (NA 1021, S. van der Piet). He became insolvent some time before 13 December 1643 when a first inventory of his possessions was taken. A second inventory was taken after his death on 30 June 1646. INVNO 1013 is a combination of these two inventories. The two inventories are from DBK 5072/351 and 5072/352.

BuyerAbraham de soon
Buyer FamilyFebre, Abraham le II
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of the owner of the goods in this sale, Pieter le Febvre. He was baptized on 23 October 1616 in the O.K., as the son of Pieter le Febure and Catrijna Lemaijre in the presence of Hans le Maijre (of R 20171) and Elijsabeth Charette (DTB 5/198). He was apparently the nephew of Abraham le Fevre I, surgeon, who guaranted a loan to Hans le Maire, gold thread worker, when the latter came to Amsterdam to exercise his trade (act of 17 January 1617, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 224). Catrijna Lemaijre (Le Maire) was apparently the sister of Hans le Maire and of the merchant Isaack le Maire. On 27 May 1639, Dirck Grijp brought 526 f. 12 st. 5 pen. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of Abraham le Febure II (called de oude because of the existence of Abraham le Fevre III), gold thread drawer, plus 440 f. that Hans le Maire owed him, also on account of his father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 29 September 1640, Abraham le Febre (probably III) (signs le Febure), from Amsterdam, pastry cook, assisted by his brother-in-law Jeremias van Haeges, was betrothed to Elisabeth de la Court from Leyden (DTB 254/427). Jeremias van Haeges (or Hagens), of R 25243) had married Abraham le Febvre (II?)'s sister Catarina le Febvre, before 1610. It is noteworthy that Hagens had bought the previous lot in this sale. Abraham le Febre I, born in Roesselaere in the Southern Netherlands, became a citizen of Amsterdam on 29 May 1589 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). As mentioned above, Abraham le Febre I was the father of Magdalena le Febre. She was betrothed to Johannes van Heusden II (the son of Johannes van Heusden I of R 36233) on 11 December 1638 (DTB 449/573). Abraham Lefebre (I or II), living on the West side of the Keysersgracht, paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 187vo, p. 43). The house on the Keisersgracht was probably no. 118/120 which Abraham le Fevre I had had built in the 1620s (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 56).

Buyer FamilyRobijen
Buyer NotesThere were several individuals named Robijn, including Hendrick Pietersz. Robijn, cited in the following deposition. On or about 26 August 1636, Jan Wouters. Stap, painter, living on the N.Z. Wester Achterburgwal in the house of Hendrick Pietersz. Robijn, 36 years old, declared at the request of Jan Lourisz., on behalf of Hendrick Pietersz., brandywine distiller, the grandfather of his wife, living in Ulenburgh, as leaser of the house of Hendrick Pietersz. Robijn, that about three persons had died in the house (from the plague?) (NA 597, fol. 510, Not. Lamberti). De Robijn was also the name of a house in the Barndesteeg where the painter Francoijs van Uffelen (of R 17944) was living in 1625. For the known archival documents about Jan Woutersz. Stap, see Oud Holland 54(1937), pp. 271-2.

Buyer FamilyDaniel, de soon [of Pieter Le Febre]
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of the owner of the goods in the present inventory. On 8 November 1635, Daniel Lefebure (signs), from Utrecht, 26 years old, living on the Breestraet, assisted by his father Pieter le Febre, blauwerver (dyer in blue), was betrothed to Trijn Gerrits (illiterate), from Aachen, 32, living in the Schoutesteechje (DTB 444/3). The birth of Daniel in Utrecht and the address on the Breestraet (Pieter le Febvre I lived in the Calverstraet) make it less than certain that this betrothal document refers to the buyer.

BuyerDancker d'Kempenaer
Buyer FamilyKempenaer, Dancker d'
Buyer NotesDanckert de Kempenaer was the grandson of Jan de Kempenaer (born in Brussels) and of Maria van den Hove and the son of Guilliam de Kempenaer, spices merchant from Brussels, who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 29 May 1585 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base), and of Barber de Conflans. Barber de Conflans was the sister of the painter Adriaen de Conflans (who lived some years in Amsterdam) and of Francoise de Conflans, who was probably the wife of the painter Gillis Coignet. The sons of Guilliam (or Willem) de Kempenaer (I) were Adriaen, Danckert (our buyer), and Guilliam II (mentioned in Amsterdam in 1621) (Nederlandse Leeuw 55(1937), pp. 137-140). Guilliam (or Willem) de Kempenaer, probably II, possibly I, died shortly before 31 October 1636 (WK 5073/789). On 16 May 1628, Reynier Jansz. van Loon, Adriaen de Kempener, and Isaack de Vries, uncles of Jacob, the son left by the late Jacob de Kempener, mastmaker, brought assets for the orphan son to the W.K. (WK 5073/789). Jacob de Kempenaer was presumably also the brother of Danckert de Kempenaer. In 1631, Danckert Kempenaer paid a tax of 5 f., at which time he was living on the Kalverstraet (as was Pieter Le Febre) (Kohier, fol. 255, p. 58). On 30 April 1617, Danckaert Kempenaer, spices merchant (cruydenier), living in the Calverstraet, was betrothed to Margerite Loockemans (DTB 763/55). If the information in the Nederlandse Leeuw (loc.cit. sup.) is correct, he remarried with Elisabeth Pinocx. On 8 January 1621, Danckert de Kempenaer and Isaac Hendricxz, the guardians of Jacob de Bucq, 22 years old, the son of Jacob de Bucq, tapissier, whose late mother was named Anneken Parys, listed the assets to which the younger Jacob de Bucq was entitled, which included a house in the Verwerijen, estimated 1797 f. (WK 5073/789, fol. 186 vo.) Jacob de Bucq I was probably a close relative (the brother ?) of the painter Gerrit de Bucq of R 28329. On 8 May 1636, Danckert d'Kempenaer, 46 years old, and Cornelis Bartelssen Veris, 40, sworn brokers, declared at the request of Hendrick Wynants that they had assisted as arbiter and broker respectively in the purchase of two houses on the Rockin on the North side of the NZ Capelle, daer de twee cramers uythangen, which were sold by Richard Swift to the producent (Hendrick Wynants) (NA 695A, film 4821, Not. J. Warnaerts). For the death inventory of Hendrick Wynants, taken on 13 December 1676, see NA 1970B, Not. Doornick). On 8 September 1639, Hans le Maire (of R 20171) insinuated Cornelis Bartelss. Veres who had bought the house de Goudeleerhuys (on the Rapenburg) from Le Maire. Willem Kick, the brother of Jan Cornelisz. Kick (of R 20238), had guaranteed the purchase. Le Maire complained that Veres had not paid the first installment due (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 144(1974), p. 239). On 14 September 1649, Dancker de Kempenaer was cited as the guardian of the minor children of Barent van Someren (of R 20424), whose widow Leonora Mytens had recently died (Oud Holland, 24(1906), p. 7.) Danckert d'Kempenaer was buried in the N.Z.K. on 22 May 1658 (DTB 1068/27). Danckert Kempenaer's family and guardian relations with painters should be noted.

BuyerJacques van Kermen naest de deur
Buyer FamilyKermen (Kermt, Kermit), Jacques (Jacob) van
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with Jacob Kermit (or van Kermt), living on the West side of the Calverstraet, who paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 271v). In 1636, Jacques van Kermt bought a house on the East side of the Calverstraet from Robbert de Boudoes (Boudoux) of R 28053. Because he could not pay the full price, he issued two rente brieven (mortgage letters) for 3000 f. each, to benefit de Boudoux. one of which was acquired by Anna Wijmer (the sister of Pieter Wijmer of R 28340) on 29 October 1638 (I. van Eeghen, Anna Wijmer en Jan Six Jaarboek Amstelodamum 76(1984), pp. 50-1). That Jacques van Kermt was living in the Kalverstraet is confirmed by the note naest deur next to the buyer's name. On 8 August 1646, Robert de Baudoux, residing in Leyden, gave a procuration to his son Jeremias de Beaudoux, merchant in Amsterdam, to collect on a rentebrief issued by Jaecques van Kermt, bontwercker (furrier) in Amsterdam with a face value of 3,000 f. , issuing from a mortgage on a house on the Calverstraet, near the Jonge Roelesteech (notaris Raven in Leyden, cited in Obreen, Archief 5(1882-1883), p 40). On 29 August 1632, Jaques van Kermit and his wife Trijntje Luijcas had their daughter Hilletje baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Joannes Ambrosius (DTB 41/207). Joannes Ambrosius may have been the brother of Lucas Jansz. Ambrosius (on whom see below), the father of Trijntgen Lucas. He was predikant in Loenen and the widower of Stijntje Pieters, formerly married to Pieter Volckertsz., in 1634. This document was signed by the predikant Eleazer Swalmius (NA 991, fol.30vo, Not. J. Bosch, 11 July 1634). Hilletje was named after Trijntje's mother, Hilletje Ruardus, the sister of Eva Ruardus of INVNO 352 (the wife of predikant Eleazer Swalmius). Hilletje Ruardus lived in the Nes, next to the tailor Bartolomeus Covijn according to a deposition of 19 May 1634 (NA 991, fol.17, Not. J. Bosch). Trijntje Lucas was the daughter of the predikant Lucas Jansz. Ambrosius (c.1570-1628), who became a regular preacher in Amsterdam in 1609. When, at the time of the Synod of Dordrecht, it came time to replace Pieter Plancius, Ambrosius received the most votes after the famous Triglandius (P.C. Molhuysen, Nieuw Nederlandsch Woordenboek, vol.1). On 18 September 1636, Hilletje Ruardus, widow of Lucas Jansz. Ambrosius, predikant, 63, and Tryntge Lucas, wife of Jacques van Kermyt, 36, testified at the request of Dirckgen Dircx, wife of Cornelis Egbertsz., knecht on the Haegh ferry, concerning the latter's family relations (NA 995, film 1225, Not. G. Coren). On 20 October 1634, Jacques van Kermten signed the pre-nuptial agreement between Mathijs Hals and Maria de Barij (see TEXT to R 313 of Montias1). On 24 October 1635, Cornelis Sladius, rector of the Groote School on the O.Z., and Jacques van de Kermte, bontwercker (furworker), 36, declared at the request of Mathijs Hals (of INVNO 411) that they had requested from Jan de Marees Abrahamsz. (the son of Abraham de Marees de oude of INVNO 300) and from Thielman van Beringen (cited in the TEXT of R 216 of Montias1) that they be present at the closing of the marriage contract of Hals with Sara de Barij but that they had refused to condone it (NA 597, fol. 134). Sladius was the guardian (and apparently the husband) of Geertgen Lucas, the daughter of Lucas Jansz. Ambrosius, the sister of Trijntje Lucas, the wife of Van Kermt. On or about 13 January 1643, Cornelis Sladius, rector of the Latin School on the O.Z., guardian of Geertgen Lucas, on one side, and Jacques van Kermt, guardian of Trijntgen Lucas, on the other, were cited as co-heirs of Hilletjen Ruardus, their stepmother. They declared that they were in agreement regarding a house in the Gansoort, which they had apparently inherited from Hilletjen Ruardus (NA 997, film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren). On 12 or 13 May 1637, Huybert Jansz., gold worker, widower of Sara Mathijs, on one side, Willem Leelenburch, fur worker, granduncle, and Jacques van der Kermt, both guardians of Johannes Huybertsz., the son left by Huybert Jansz., came to an agreement with respect to the inheritance from [?] (NA 598, fol. 212, Not. Lamberti). On 30 July 1638, Franchoys de Velden, 71, Dirck Hendricksz. (of R 26728 ?), 50, Dancker d'Kempenaer (of R 25250), 47, and Jacques van Kemp (a clerk's error for Kermen or Kermt), 39, Joris de Caersgieter, 35, Mathys Hals (of INVNO 411), 29, and Samuel Hespel (of R 25237), all living in the Calverstraet, declared at the request of the Substitute Schout Pieter Jansen Vlasvadt (of R 7684) that there were two inns in their neighborhood in an alley known locally as the Hoerensteech (the Whores' Path), in which certain immoral women (ontuchtige vrouw personnen) were present (NA 696A, film 4982). In the middle of the 17th century, the path, which, as the source states, was called Hoerensteeg, was renamed Spreeupotsteeg, later Spaarpotsteeg (Maandblad Amstelodamum 6(1940), p. 114). Note that Van Kermen (Kermt), Hespel, and d'Kempenaer were all buyers at the present sale, held in the Calverstraet. Joris de Caersgieter, painter and art dealer, was the son of the painter Frans de Kaersgieter (of R 23624), who also lived on the Kalverstraet at the time of his betrothal in 1600. On 4 December 1658, Jacques van Kermt, broker, rented his house on the Kalverstraet for two years, at 1,000 f. a year, and the next two for 1,100 f., to the painter Aernout (Aert) van der Neer (Bredius in Oud Holland 28(1910), p.56). Kermt died before 1 February 1662 (Van Eeghen, loc. cit.)

BuyerJeronimus Lakrois van de vrunden
Buyer FamilyLakrois (la Croix), Jeronimus (I) de
Buyer NotesThe buyer is believed to be Jeronimus de la Croix de oude (I), who, on 13 October 1612, was betrothed to Margrieta le Fevre. He was a hoedencramer (had a stall where he sold hats), from Middelburgh, 26 years of age; she was from Antwerp, 25, assisted by her uncle Francis le Fevre (DTB 449/184).On 17 October 1619, Jeronimus de la Croix, sworn broker, 35, declared at the request of Cosimo de Moucheron, the brother of Melchior de Moucheron (probably of R 31230). that he had gone to Utrecht on behalf of the producent (Moucheron) to collect 1,085 f. due to him by Claes van Hinnen (NA 381, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz., fol. 127). Margrieta le Fevre was presumably the daughter of Pieter le Febvre; her uncle Francis was presumably Pieter le Febvre's brother. On 16 June 1634, Jeronimo de la Croix, 53, and Johan van der Straten (II), 26 (cited in the NOTES to R 27080), both merchants, declared at the request of Cornelis Berck (cited in the NOTES to R 7706 and R 22128) that a certain accounting was in the hands the servant of Marco and Bernardo Moens in Venice (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 16 June 1638, Jeronimus de la Croix (I) presented his daughter Lucretia, 17, whose late mother was Margriete le Febure, to the Orphan Chamber and declared that she was entitled to 1,200 f. for her mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 16 July 1638, he assisted his son Jeronimus de la Croix de jonge (II) upon his betrothal to Elisabeth Coens (DTB 449/184). On 13 December 1638, the honorable Jeronimus de la Croix de jonge and Johannes Bouman, as husband and guardian of Jacomijntge de la Croix, acknowledged receiving the goods inherited from the late Margarita le Febure, their mother and mother-in-law respectively (NA 1279, fol. 90, Not. H. Schaeff). The father was one of the vrunden of Pieter le Fevre, probably his son-in-law. It is possible that Gerald or Gerarldo was a version of his first name Jeronimus. In the 1631 Kohier, Gerard de la Croix (probably I) was taxed 200 f., living on the East side of the Keysersgracht (fol. 303, p. 69). Geraldo de la Croix (I or II) was also cited in a deposition of 26 July 1635 (NA 695A, film 4821). It was probably Jeronimus de la Crois II who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 7 January 1643 and was noted in 1654 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). Jeronimus de la Croix II remarried with Margrieta van den Bergh, from Waasten in Flanders, on 30 October 1648 (DTB 466/211). Jeronimus de la Croix II(?) acted as a broker in a transaction concerning a mill dated 25 January 1677 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 74(1982), p. 92).

BuyerAugustijen d'Keulenaer
Buyer FamilyKeulenaer (Colenaer), Augustijen (Augustin) de (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of Augustijn de Colenaer I, whose post mortem sale took place on 17 April 1614 (INVNO 688). The latter, a doctor in law, had been betrothed to Maria Simay on 9 April 1609 (see R 587 of Montias1). On 22 January 1622, Augustyn, Maria, and Laurens de Colenaer, children of the late Augustyn de Colenaer (I) and of Maria Simeys, received certain assets that had come from their maternal uncle Dirck Simeys (NA 425, film 6432, Not. Jacob Jacobsz.) On 22 August 1631, Augustijn de Ceulenaer (signs Colenaer) (II), from Amsterdam, 25 years old, no living parents, drogist, living in the Armsteech, was betrothed to Marija Majeur, from Amsterdam, 25, assisted by her meur Jannetie Chijnu (DTB 437/305). Marija Majeur was the sister of Susanna Majeur who was betrothed to Hans Bultel (of R 36476) on 31 March 1632. Both were daughters of Toussain Majeur. On 21 February 1636, the eersame Augustijn de Colenaer and Jeremias de Maistre, merchants, named Johan Sol, procureur, to represent them and act in their behalf in Purmerent (NA 414A, fol. 160, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 3 October 1636, Mr. Jeroen Wagelier (?), as husband and guardian of Jacquemyntje Bouchet, formerly wife of Touchyn (Toussain) Majeur, Augusty de Colenaer, as husband and guardian of Maria Majeur, and Abraham Majeur, besides Susanna Majeur, wife of Hans Bultel, all children and heirs of Tousyn Majeur, approved an agreement made by Hans Bultel with Basilio Boucher (Bouchet), the father and swager, respectively, of the appearers, concerning a sum of 60 rijcksdaelders that Basilio owed to them, but of which, due to war and decadentie, he had only been able to pay 32 rijcksdaelders (NA 597, fol. 537, Not. Lamberti). The bankrupt inventory of Augustijn d'Colenaer, drogist, was taken on 25 June 1650 (DBK 5072/355, fol. 165-175, INVNO 1113).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Willem Sicx van de vrunden]
Buyer FamilySicx [Six], Willem
Buyer NotesWillem Six was 14 years old when his mother Jenne or Johanna Wijmer died in 1624. She was the wife of Guilliam Six who had died in 1619. Willem's sister Alix (who is perhaps the buyer of R 27634) married Adriaen Cromhout of a distinguished North Holland family in 1615. Jenne's sister Anna Wijmer married Jan Six I, the father of Jan Six II of Rembrandt fame (I. van Eeghen, Anna Wijmer en Jan Six Jaarboek Amstelodamum 76(1984), p. 39 and foll.) On 25 September 1622, dr. Nicolaes Mulerius, professor in Groningen, husband and guardian of Christina Six, gave a procuration to Jan Cornelisz. Hogenboom, on behalf of Jehanne Wymeer, widow of Guilliame Six, and Anna Wymer, widow of Jan Six, to transfer and sell a ninth part in the dye-works, house and court located outside the Heyligenwechspoort, and a ninth part in a piece of land with two houses and other property located outside St. Anthonispoort which he, Mulerius, had sold to Jeanne Wymeer and Anna Wymeer, which properties he had inherited from Charles Six, his wife's brother (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 466). On 1 June 1629, Willem Sicx, from Amsterdam, 19 years old, no living parents, assisted by his uncle Carel Six, and Pieter Wymer, living on the Turfmarckt, was betrothed to Catharina Hinlopen, 17, assisted by her mother Neeltie (Cornelia) Oetgens and her uncles Thyman Hinloopen, bourgomaster, and Anthonis Oetgensz. (van Waveren) (DTB 433/399). Anthony Oetgens van Waveren, Lord of Waveren, was a member of the Vroedschap from 1620 to 1658. He married Anna Spiegel on 8 February 1611 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 331). On his guardianship of the children of Jacob Centen, see below). Carel Six (I), cited in the betrothal act, was the brother of Guilliam Six and of Jan Six I. He was married to Margrieta Oetgens (presumably the sister of Neeltie Oetgens). After his death, his movable goods were sold at auction on 21 March 1640 and brought a total of 1,960 f. (WK 5073/789, act of 11 October 1640). Carel Six I was the heir of his brother Guilliam Six (NA 843, 7 September 1632 , Not. Hoogeboom). Carel Six II, who never married, was the son of Jan Six I and Anna Wijmer. The father of Catharina Hinlopen was Frans Jacobsz. Hinloopen (1583-1628). Anthonie Oetgensz., the uncle of Catharina Hinlopen (the brother of Cornelia Oetgens), was appointed as guardian to the children of Jacob Centen on 24 April 1614 (WK 573/513, fol. 147vo). Jacob Centen, who was said to be 48 in a deposition dated 9 July 1619, made at the request of Claes Pietersz. Puijnert, declared that he had gone to Cadiz in Spain with Puijnert (NA 382, fol. 6). Thyman Hinloopen (1572-1637), married to Anna van Varlaer (1584-1644), was the father of the print collector and art lover Michiel Hinloopen (1619-1708) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 452.) Willem Six, as the clerk of the auction sale noted, was a relative (vrund) of Pieter Le Febre, the late owner of the goods in the present sale. Pieter le Febvre's second wife was Nicole Wijmer, the sister of Willem's mother Jenne Wijmer. On 8 January 1638, Willem Six acknowledged that he owed Jan Rodenburgh 150 f, stemming from the purchase of a house on the North side of the Egelantiersstraet (NA 992, film 1221, fol. 28). Jan Rodenburgh, who married Hester Willems, the widow of Reyer Claes. Ansloo (the son of Claes Ansloo of INVNO 1134), on 28 September 1631) was a merchant who signed the 1645 petition calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1625), p. 89). In 1645, Willem Six went to live in his own house on the Fluwele Burgwal. On 16 November 1646, Cornelis Rengersz., cloth merchant, lodged an insinuatie against Willem Six claiming that some French drap de Berri that he had given him to dye had come back damaged (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 474-5). Cornelis Rengers (of INVNO 1343), who became insolvent in 1664, apparently dealt in glassware at the time of his bankruptcy. Willem Six died on 14 July 1652 (I. van Eeghen, op. cit. p. 45).

Buyer NotesDaniel Gilijot, glovemaker, is almost certainly identical with Daniel Giot, living in the Warmoesstraat, who paid a tax of 25 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 128v, p. 30). On 31 January 1609, Daniel Guiot, from Antwerp, glovemaker (handschoenmacker), 24 years old, living in the Barberenstraet, was betrothed to Elisabeth Sijberechts, from Bergen-op-Zoom, 25. Both were literate (DTB 413/373). On 11 January 1625, Daniel Guyot stood surety for the purchase of a house for 4850 f. by Abraham de Sadelaer (of R 21507) from the widow of Anthony Gaillaart (de oude) (WK 5073/913). On 20 August 1642, an inventory was taken of the goods left by the widow of Daniel Guiot, living in the Warmoesstraet, over the Niesdel, including a handschoenwinckel (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), pp. 348-9).

He paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived near the Nadorst steech (Kohier, fol. 232, p. 53). On 9 March 1628, Gerrit Brant and Neel Jeroens had their daughter Cornelia baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Aefjen Jeroens (DTB 6/200). On 8 November 1652, Cornelia Brant, from Amsterdam, 25, assisted by her father Gerrit Brant, living on the Rockin, was betrothed to Jan Steen, from Leyden, broker, widower of Clara Haenecops, living on Egelentiergracht (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.139). This Jan Steen is not identical with the painter of that name. On 16 June 1633, Gerrit Brandt, clockmaker, 39, and Jacob Maire (?), apothecary, 19, made a declaration at the request of Hendrick Schut, likewise clockmaker, about a certain Luijfellen who had come to Schut's house and had kept the clock that he had apparently taken or borrowed (NA 770, film 5191, Not. Verhey). It is probably a coincidence that Hendrick Schut bore the same name as the painter whose bentname was Brootsaeck. On 30 July 1615, the watchmaker Jan Claesz. declared that he had insulted Mr. Henrik Schut, clockmaker, by reason of drunkenness but that he knew nothing but good on Schut's account (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 123). On 3 March 1637, Gerrit Brant, horlogie macker (clock maker), 42 years old, made a deposition at the request of Hessel Jansz. Vlasbloem concerning the death of Francoijs Buys in the Vissteech (NA 695B, film 4981, Not. J. Warnaerts). 1642, he was named, along with the poet Jan Vos, director of the Schouwburg (theater) of Amsterdam (Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 3, p. 398). He was the father of the poet and tragedian Geerardt Brandt (initially a clockmaker), who wrote De veynsende Torquatus in 1644 (Oud Holland 7(1889), pp. 94-5) and was also the author of a famous history of the religious troubles of his time. After the death of his first wife, Gerrit Brant I was again betrothed to Maaike Stevens, widow of Joost van den Ende, on 26 October 1645 (DTB 678/134). He was buried on 8 February 1659 (DTB 1068/140). Joost Brant, who was also a clockmaker, may have been Gerrit Brant I's brother (see NA 772, act of 10 July 1635).
