BuyerCornelis Pietersz. Snijer
Buyer FamilySnijer (Snijder), Cornelis Pietersz.
Buyer NotesShortly before 2 November 1621, Cornelis Pietersz., together with 31 other grain dealers signed a petition to the Amsterdam authorities calling for a change in the regulation that grain had to be unloaded in ligters (small boats used for that purpose). In view of the petition below, which was signed by several of the grain dealers who signed the above petition, it is very likely that Cornelis Pietersz. in the 1621 petition is identical with Cornelis Pietersz. Snijder in the 1627 petition (Van Dillen. Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 418-420). In 1627, Cornelis Pietersz. Snijder signed a petition of the Aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor) suggesting changes in a project of the Amsterdam administration which envisaged a levy on grain for the benefit of the poor who did not belong to any church providing such benefits (the Reformed, Lutheran, and R.C. churches). Most (all ?) of the signers were involved in the grain trade. Cornelis Pietersz. Snijder was buried in the Westerkerck in 1644 (E. Lievense-Pelser, Een schepel graan in 1627, Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), pp. 82,87). In 1631, Cornelis Pietersz. Snijer (misspelled Suijer in the Kohier), living on the Singel, paid a tax of 100 f. (Kohier, fol. 56vo., p. 14). In 1640 (exact date unknown), Pieter Snijder, who is likely to have been the son of Cornelis Pietersz. Snijder, signed a petition with 20 other merchants that was similar to the one dated 1621 cited above (Van Dillen, op. cit. 144(1974), p. 283).

BuyerVockeltge Pieters de dochter voors.
Buyer FamilyPieters, Vockeltge (Foockeltge) (van Hoorn)
Buyer NotesFoockeltge Pieters van Hoorn (1606-1682) was the daughter of Pieter Claasen Kod of this inventory. On 17 January 1627, Jan Claesz. Ansloo de oude (I), cloth merchant living on the Nieuwen Dijck, was married to Fockeltge Pieters van Hoorn (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 449 and WK 5073/890, fol. 55). Jan Claesz. Ansloo I was the son of Claes Claesz. Ansloo I of INVNO 1134. After the death of Jan Claesz., Foockeltge Pieters became a Regent of the Spinhuis in 1666 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 4(1906), p. 122). In 1674, she was taxed on the basis of assets evaluated at f. 95,000.

BuyerBrechge Claes de petemoeije
Buyer FamilyClaes, Brechge
Buyer NotesBrechge Claes van Hoorn, born ca. 1578, married Jan Reyniersz. Valckenier in 1628 (perhaps identical with the buyer Jan Reyniersz. of R 31200). She was the daughter of Claes van Hoorn. The Hoorn family was related to the Kod and Pool families through marriage and pete ties. On 30 September 1607, Brechge Claes was a witness to the baptism of Annetje, the daughter of Elbert Symonsz. Pool and his first wife Lutje Claes (DTB 39/134). In 1631, Brechje Claes, living on the East side of the Keysersgracht, paid a tax of 100 f. (Kohier, fol. 185vo, p. 42). Note also that Brechge Claes van Hoorn was related to Pietertge Claes of INVNO 293 who had married Barent van Hoorn (see R 7676). She was also the aunt of Lucretia van Hoorn who married Johannes Wttenbogaert, the Receiver General of the Country's Funds (of R 27441).

Buyer FamilyBerch, Jacob van den
Buyer NotesAn individual of that name baptized a child in the Lutheran church on 17 December 1623 (DTB 139/29). He paid 30 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Keysersgracht, as he did when he purchased the present lot (Kohier, fol. 189, p. 43.) He is almost certainly identical with Jacob Wolphertsz. van den Berch, grain dealer, who signed a petition to the town authorities in 1621, along with a number of other grain dealers (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 420). Jacob van den Berch signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628.

BuyerAdriaen Dominicus voors.
Buyer FamilyDominicus, Adriaen
Buyer NotesOn 9 June 1600, Adriaen Dominicus, from Bergen in Norway, 30 years old, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, assisted by his neve Adriaen Jacobsz. (of R 20404), was betrothed to Jannetje Cornelis, living op 't water. She was assisted by Cornelis Ghysbretchsz. and Dirckgen Dircksdr., her father and mother (DTB 409/190). On 21 February 1613, Adriaen Dominicus was named by the Orphan Chamber as guardian over the children of the first wife of Dirck Gerritsz. bergenvaerder (a shipper to Bergen in Norway) (WK 5073/513, fol. 136vo.) On 31 January 1622, Jannetje Pieters, assisted by Jacob Jacobsz. Vinck (of R 28167), was said to be married to Dirck Gerritsz. bergevaerder. The children were aged 22 and less). (WK 5073/789). In 1624, he lived in 't blauwe paart, which was presumably located op 't Water (auction sale of 8 August 1624 of the goods of Weijn Jansdr., INVNO 949). On 8 December 1628, Adriaen Jacobsz. van Noort (of R 20404) and Lourens Dubbelworst (of R 27808), as executors of the testament of the late Adriaen Dominicus and Jannetgen Cornelis, brought some assets left by the couple to benefit the two children of Dirck van Heemskerck (WK 5073/789). The heirs of Adriaen Dominicus, living op 't water, paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 72, p.17). Adriaen Jacobsz. was also from Bergen in Norway. Like Adriaen Dominicus, he also, at one time, lived on the Nieuwen Dijck. It may be that both were neighbors of Pieter Kod.

Buyer FamilyPool, Cornelis Simonson
Buyer NotesOn 1 May 1601, Cornelis Simonsz. Pool, living in the St. Jacobscapellesteegh, 21 years old, assisted by his father Symon Cornelisz., was betrothed to Maritje Jans van Keulen, 18, assisted by her father Hans van Ceulen (DTB 409/382). The buyer was the brother of Elbert Sijmonsz. Pool, who died in 1620 (INVNO 644). After the death of his brother, he rented his house de Jonge Pool from his brother's heirs. Sijmen Cornelisz. Pool invested 1,200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 185). This lot seems to be identical with the painting in INVNO 644, lot 0014, of David and Uriah by Lastman, which sold for f 26:10:--.
