BuyerJan du Gardijn
Buyer FamilyGardijn, Jan du
Buyer NotesThe buyer was one of the three individuals at whose request this sale was held. On 30 November 1623, Jean du Gardijn [crossed out: de jonge], 32 years old, living on the Verwersgracht, assisted by his father Martyn du Gardyn (of R 255250), was betrothed to Catarina Lambrechx, 17, assisted by her parents Lambert Lambrechtsz. and Catharina Lamberts (DTB 428/278). Lambert Lambrechtsz., whose third wife was Catharina de Smedt, was the owner of a dye works near the Heyligewegspoorten. Jean du Gardijn's mother was Polisse le Thoor (of INVNO 366). The present sale, which took place on 19 December 1623, must have occurred on or very near the day when the marriage took place. This point is significant because this lot and two other maps, which were sold immediately after this lot (R 25517 and R 25518), were included in the goods that Jan de Gardyn brought to his marriage (R 39534, R 39535, and R 39536). On 10 November 1624, Jean du Gardin and Caterine Lamberts had their son Jean baptized in the Wa.K. in the presence of Etiene Smits and the wife of Lambert Lambertsz. (DTB 1130/108). Etiene Smits was presumably a relative of Catharina Smedt. Jean du Gardijn died before 11 March 1626, when the inventory of the late Jan du Guardyn and of his wife Catharyntge Lamberts, was taken (GAA, Not. Westfrisius, no. 562B. The works of art in this inventory are recorded in INVNO 1039). On 4 July 1625, Cathalijntje Lamberts, widow of Jan du Guardijn, had an accounting made of the goods accruing to her son Jan du Guardijn (WK 5073/889, fol. 222). On the same day, Martyn du Gardyn and Lambert Lambertsz., dyer, the grandparents of the son left by Jan du Gardyn, also named Jan du Gardyn, accepted the guardianship over this son (WK 5073/513, fol.36). Lambert Lambertsz. (or Lambrechtsz.) died before 22 August 1628 when Jeronimus Lefebvre (of R 32347) signed a contract for the lease of the verwerije (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 655). Jean's father Martijn du Gardijn was buried in the Frans Kerk on 9 June 1645 (DTB 1130/108). His mother Police Letoor was buried in the Frans Kerk on 29 December 1649 (DTB 1130/133). The inventory of Polisse du Gardyn was taken on 30 December 1650 (INVNO 366). It included a portrait of Hans (Jan) du Gardijn (R 9830). After the death of Jean du Gardijn, Catharina Lambrechts remarried with Isaack Hattevier, who was one of the regents of the Walenweeshuis in the 1630s. The present lot seems to be identical with dito [een geschildert bort op pampier] van de stadt Prage, which was estimated 2 gulden in Jean du Gardijn's death inventory (lot 0007 of INVNO 1039).

BuyerMartyn du Gardyn
Buyer FamilyGardyn, Martyn du
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the father of Jan du Gardijn of R 25516 (one of the three individuals at whose request the present sale was held). On 8 October 1593, Martijn du Gardijn, bouratwercker (a sort of textile worker), born in Rijssel, and his wife Polysse (or Police) le Tor passed their testament. They passed another testament on 12 September 1625 (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 322). Martijn du Gardijn invested 600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 242). Marten du Gardijn, living on the Uytterse Steiger, bought lots in the 1606 Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. (4/13 F 25). On 2 August 1627, Hans le Thoor de oude (who may have been the brother of Martijn du Gardijn's wife Polisse le Tor) pledged some goods, including paintings, against a loan he had obtained from Martyn du Gardijn (INVNO 518 and R 424 of Montias1). Marten du Gardijn, living in the Verwerstraet, paid a tax of 180 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 223, p. 51). On 24 June 1638, the honorable Marten du Gardijn, merchant, executor of the testament of the late Bartholomeus Genevre, sought to collect money due to Genevre's estate from Adriaen de Man, apothecary in Delft (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). On 9 June 1645, Martyn du Gardijn was buried, leaving no children, over het oude man-huys, and 10 f. 13 st. were paid on his behalf (DTB 1130/108). His wife Police Lettor was buried on 29 December 1649 (DTB 1130/133). On 30 December 1650, an inventory was taken of the goods belonging to the late Pauline (or Police) Letor, widow of Martijn du Gardijn (INVNO 366).
