Buyer FamilyGranen (Cranen), Hans van
Buyer NotesOn 18 August 1623, the Orphan Chamber named the witwercker (white wood worker) Hans van Cranen, together with the carpenter Daniel Woutersz. of R 26574, as guardians over the children of Abraham Meyndertsz., backer, of the present inventory (WK 5073/513, fo. 12vo.) Hans van Cranen paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Warmoesgraft (Kohier, fol. 65, p. 16). The address confirms the identification. On 6 December 1631, Jacob Coerten, shoemaker, 64, and Hans van Cranen, witwercker, 66, citizens of Amsterdam, declared at the request of Femmetge Dircx widow of Hans Schelderbaert (de oude) that she was the only heir and blood relative of Hans Selderbaert de jonge, her son, who had gone to the East Indies in 1627 and died there. His only heir was his mother, the petitioner in this act (NA 842, Notary Hoogeboom).

BuyerDaniel Woutersz.
Buyer FamilyWoutersz., Daniel
Buyer NotesOn 30 September 1601, Daniel Woutersz., from Antwerp, kistenmacker, 28, having lived 18 years in Rusland, assisted by his stepfather Willem Jansz. and by his mother Magdalena van Horen (?), was betrothed to Geertge Pieters, 21, living in the Korsgepoort, assisted by her godmother Marritge Ariaens (DTB 412/64). After the death of the baker Abraham Meynertsz. (of the present inventory and of INVNO 6500), an inventory was taken of his possessions under the supervision of Daniel Woutersz. and of his wife Roberta (presumably his second wife). Daniel Woutersz. was said to be the uncle of the children (WK 5073/968, 10 July 1623). On 18 August 1623, the masters of the Orphan Chamber named Daniel Woutersz. as guardian over the children left by Erckgen Sacharias, the widow of Abraham Meyndertsz., baker, along with Hans van Cranen, witwercker of R 26539 (WK 5073/513, fol. 12vo). On 27 August 1625, Giertgen Pieters, assisted by her guardian Gerrit Jacobsz. Haring (bode of the Orphan Chamber), appeared before the Chamber to present her four children left by Daniel Woutersz., kistemacker. The children were entitled to 2400 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On 2 September 1625, Giertge Pieters was again betrothed, to Louis Victor, bode op Dordrecht, of R 24477_. On this occasion, she declared she had been a widow for 4 years (i.e. since 1621), which was certainly an exaggeration (DTB 430/238). She was living in the Ruslandt in January 1632 (see the NOTES to R 20362). She died before 11 June 1633 when Lois Victor remarried with Marritie Jacobs (ibid.)

BuyerMr. Steven chirurgijn
Pre Lot HeaderDen 28 julij [1623] des naermittags
Buyer FamilyVennecool, Mr. Steven
Buyer NotesThe full name of the surgeon Mr. Steven was Steven Vennecool. He was married to Elisabeth Koorenkint van den Hoeff. The dramatist and historian P.C. Hooft was a client of Mr. Steven, chirurgijn. On 4 February 1625, some textile goods (hosiery) were sold by the WK at the request of Mr. Steven (WK 5073/950). On 28 September 1627, Mr. Steven Vennecool, surgeon, and Tieleman Willemsz., silversmith, 31, declared at the request of Willem Jansz. Delff, plate engraver in Delft, that on this date they had gone to the house of Salomon Rogiers, living on the Egelantiersgracht in the Blauwe Druyff, and had asked him to engrave an advijs (motto) on a silver beaker for Mr. Steven. They stipulated that the engraving must be as good as on an engraved portrait of the Pince of Orange. Salomon Rogiers said that it was he who had engraved the letters under that portrait (A. Bredius in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890) , p. 258). Salomon Rogiers was the son of the famous brass caster Hans Rogier and of his first wife (NA 483, film 6484, fol.413). On 25 August 1618, Salomon Rogierss, 26, assisted by his father Hans Rogier, living on the Nieuwe Dijck, plate engraver, was betrothed to Catarina Koeck, from Antwerp, 32, living in the Nes (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.310). In 1631, Dr. Steven, living in the St. Luciensteeg, paid a tax of 5 f. (Kohier, fol. 255, p. 58). On 5(?) October 1636, Mr. Steven, city surgeon, 45, made a deposition (NA 949, film 1172). On 27 June 1637, Mr. Jan Hartman, 50, Mr. Cornelis Kercken, 46, and Mr. Steven Vennecoel, 46, all master surgeons, made a declaration at the request of Mr. Jan Lambertsz., likewise surgeon, concerning a wound that some individual had sustained in his leg (NA 598, fol. 254, Not. Lamberti). Steven Vennecoel's son Dirck Vennecool, born in 1625, was betrothed to Clementia Segers, the daughter of Seger Pietersz. of R 3233, on 12 April 1657. She was the widow of the notary Albert Eggericx (S.A.C. Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek C.B.G. 48(1991), p. 129). Dirck Vennecool was still living in his father's house in the St. Luciensteeg on 27 May 1652. when, together with the painter Gerrit Dassonville, he made a deposition at the request of the glassmaker Gysbert van Manen (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 140). Another son, Jacob Stevensz. Vennecool, born about 1631, was an architect. On 17 July 1655, Jacob Vennecool, painter, was betrothed to Elisabeth Marchand in Amersfoort. He moved to Amsterdam shortly thereafter He was buried on 6 October 1673. On 17 July 1670, there appeared before Pelgrom Block, notary in Amsterdam, Jan Kuyper, 52, living behind the N.K. and Mr. Jacob Vennecool, art painter and architect (bouwmeester), 38, and declared at the request of Michiel Berthems, sculptor, now living [crossed out: being] in Rome, and of the eerbare Susanna Berthems, spinster, are children of the E. Michiel Berthems, during his life captain in the service of the King of England. They deny that any member of the family was ever brought to justice or scourged. Jacob Vennecool asserts that he has taken on Michiel van Berthems as a pupil (Dozy in Obreen's Archief voor Nederlandsche kunsteschiedenis, 5(1881-2), pp.266-7). taken the first requirant ( On 17 January 1666, Jacob (Jacobus) Stevensz. Vennecool, 35, declared at the request of the master sculptor Bartholomeus Eggers, in the Hague, that he had been present when Eggers, six days previously, had paid Anthoni Dussaine (Duchesne?) for stones that were to be used for the sepulture of Jacob van Wassenaer, Admiral General in his life (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 721). The son of Jacob Vennecool, named Steven after his grandfather, was an architect (Dozy, op.cit., p.265). The family was Roman Catholic.

BuyerJan Willemsz. witwercker
Buyer FamilyWillemsz., Jan (witwercker)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a woodworker. He may be identical with the ebony worker Jan Willemsz. Bus (of INVNO 219) who made frames, boxes, and other objects also made by witwerckers (Oud Holland 33(1915), pp. 88-9.) Jan Willemsz. Bus was a buyer of frames at the sale of Arent Jansz. of INVNO 836. He may also be identical with the lumber merchant (houtkoper) Jan Willemsz. who stood surety in December 1618 for Sijmon Thonisz. van Steenvelt for the purchase of one of the lots on the West side of the Keysersgracht on which the Remonstrant Church was founded (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 67(1975), p. 128) and who bought an obligation issued on a sawmill in 1632 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 804.) It was frequent for artisans working in a craft occupation like woodworking to integrate backwards by dealing in the raw material they utilized (in this case lumber). Finally, he may be identical with the carpenter Jan Willemsz. who transferred money on 20 November 1631 to the heir of Hendrick Jacobsz. Brouwer (NA 371, fol. 227) and to whom Marten Gerritsz., the stepfather of Claertge Bouwens, who was the granddaughter of Guilliam Bouwens, owed money in 1636 (see R 32474).
