BuyerBarent Harmensen uijtdrager
Buyer FamilyHarmensen, Barent
Buyer NotesThe buyer, an uijtdraager (retailer of second-hand goods), may be identical with the individual of that name, living op 't water, who paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631. An individual named Barent Harmensz. at a Delft estate auction in 1618 bought a water color landscape for 4 f. 17 st. and an image of Mary (probably a painting) for 27 f. He may be the same uitdraager (Delft NA 1582, Not. Vockestaert, 28 March). Another (?) individual of the same name was said to be a tinsmith in 1636 (NA 642, fol. 164). The other individual named Barent Harmensz. in the tax book, paid 50 f., at which time he was living on the East side of the Voorburchwal. This more wealthy individual was probably the lakenstopper Barent Harmensz. who paid 4000 f. for a house in 1640 (Kohier, fol. 23 vo., p. 6 and fol. 30vo, p. 8 and Jaarboek Amstelodamum 68(1976), p. 96) and was portrayed by Rembrandt in the Nightwatch.

Buyersolvit [crossed out: David Otsen]
Buyer FamilyOtsen, David (Born)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is believed to be identical with David Ottens Born who is cited in the notarial literature at least since 10 July 1619 when he signed a shipping contract (NA 214, fol. 153vo, Extracten). On 4 July 1623, a pre-nuptial contract was signed for the marriage of Hillebrant Otsz. Born, David's brother, with Aarlent Stachholder (Stachouwer). David Otsz. was present as well as his parents Otte Douwesz. Born and Diewer Hillebrants. Jan Gerritsz. Coppit was said to be the swager of Aarlent Stacholder (NA 201, fol. 29vo, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). Jan Gerritsz. Coppit was presumably the brother of Trijntgen Coppit who married Johan Stachouwer, Heer van Schiermonnikoog, on 27 June 1623 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.11). On 25 February 1628, Abraham de Schilder (of R 20401) declared that he had insured some ships with Adriaen Hendricksz. (possibly of R 36687), David Otsen Born, and Jan Webster. One of the ships had sunk (NA 698, fol. 17, Not. Warnaerts, Extracten). In a declaration dated 14 September 1634, David Otsz. appeared as one of numerous insurers of the ship De Evangelist St. Jan, which had apparently been lost (NA 843, fol. 683, Not. Hoogenboom). On 23 May 1636, Mr. David Otsen Born and Pieter van Buyren (of R 31804), together with Dirck van Dans (of INVNO 205) and Johannes Spiers (of R 23553), ratified the agreement made by Reynier van Buren de jonge (son of Reynier van Buren de oude of R 31437) with his creditors and declared that they approved of the Schepenkennisse he had passed before the aldermen (NA 991, fol. 48, Not. J. Bosch). On 3 December 1639, David Otsen and Goyken Elbertsz. Snoeck, insurers, paid for the loss of two ships that had sunk on their return from Pernambuco in Brasil, pursuant to an arbitration. The ships belonged to Francoijs Boudewijnsz. of R 20588. Otsen paid 200 pounds Flemish (1,200 gulden), Snoeck, 100 pounds (600 gulden). Boudewijnsz. declared himself satisfied (NA 480, fol. 255, 255vo, Not. P. Mathijs, Extracten).

BuyerLambert Gerritsz.
Buyer FamilyGerritsz., Lambert
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Lambert Gerritsz. Ruijl, the son of Gerrit Albertsz. Ruijl of INVNO 596 and R 20815. On 17 January 1613, Lambert Gerritsz. Ruijl, painter, 25, living in the Nieuwe Hoochstraet, assisted by his father Gerrit Allertsz. Ruijl, was betrothed to Teuntjen Kornelis de Goyer (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 312). He seems to have remarried and to have changed his occupation. Lambert Gerritsz. Ruijl, ironmonger (ijsercramer), paid a tax of 25 f. in 1631, living on the West side of the Brestraet (Kohier, fol. 221, p. 51). According to R 32250, dated 1625, he formerly lived in 't Vyseltgen. When he bought the lot in R 29505, dated 1609, when the sale was held waer de drie viseltges op den Dam, he was said to be living naest de deur. According to R 32250, dated 1625, he formerly lived in't Vyseltgen. He may well have moved from the Dam to the Breestraet between 1609 and 1625. Lambert Gerritsz. Ruijl seems to have remarried with Gerbrich Hendricx. After his death, which took place about 1631, a tax of 15 f. was paid on behalf of his two children (Kohier, fol. 316, p. 72). On 10 March 1638, the inventory of Lambert Gerritsz. Ruijl, ijsercramer, and of his widow Gerbrich Hendricx was taken. His movable goods were evalued at 1810 f. 7 st. 8 pen. (of which the silver alone was worth 273 f. 4 st.) The widow still owned the family house on the Hooghstraet, valued at 3,900 f. as well as one near the St. Anthonijsluijs (probably in the Breestraet, cited above), valued at 2,500 f. None of the paintings in his inventory seemed to correspond to the ones he (if it was he) had bought at auction (NA 714, fol. 228 and foll., film 5148, not. Jan Carels). Note that the combination of Lambert and Gerritsz. is not rare, and that the identication is not quite secure.
