BuyerDaniel van Horenberch
Buyer FamilyHorenberch (Hoorbeecke, Horebeke), Daniel van
Buyer NotesThe buyer's name was spelled in various ways, but he is believed to be correctly identified in the following acts. On 24 August 1617, Daniel van Hoorbeecke and Martijntje Galjaert had their son Jakes baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lodwijs Lubeck and Hester Joost Geel (?) (DTB 5/225). Martijntje was the daughter of Anthony Gaillaert (de oude), who assisted her on the occasion of her first betrothal with Jan Lambertsz., from Embden, maelderier (seller of iron products, ijsercramer), on 8 January 1600 (DTB 409/100). On 6 November 1624, after the death of Anthony Gaillaert (de oude), Daniel van Horebeke and Martyntge Gaillard signed his death inventory (WK 5073/789). On 17 January 1625, the widow and heirs of Anthonie Gaillard sold to Daniel van Horebeke a house with the name De wijnpers on the corner of the Soet Naem Jeus(steeg) (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat, 1968, p.35/27). According to an accounting dated 28 January 1628, Daniel van Horenbeeck owed 547 f. 6 st. to the estate of Anthony Gaillaert for some illegible item and 8,260 f. for the purchase of the house 't Wijnpres (WK 5073/1092). Daniel van Hoornbeeck paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Warmoesstraet, East side from the Enge Kercksteegh (Kohier, fol. 143 vo., p. 33.) In 1633, he was said to have bought mirror glass from the merchant Paulus van Gansepoel II (NA 695A, film 4981, 3 May 1635, deposition of joffr. Maria de Renialme, widow of Paulus Gansepoel I, who had died in 1625). On 18 April 1638, Daniel van Horenbeck, 60, dealer in mirrors, made a deposition at the request of the art dealer Luce Luce concerning a painting by Ter Bruggen which Luce had attempted to buy in Deventer (see an extensive summary of the document in the NOTES to R 20173).

BuyerPieter Gailiaert
Provenanceperhaps identical with een nacht, de vlucht van Egipten van Leendert Bramer in the inventory of Anthony Gaillart de jonge (R 875 of INVNO 163).
Buyer FamilyGailliaert, Pieter
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a goldthreaddrawer (goutdraedtrecker) and an embroiderer. He was the son of Anthony Gaillaert de oude and the brother of Anthony Gaillaert de jonge. He was 27 years old when he was betrothed to Sara Waterloos, of Middelburg, on 27 March 1621 (DTB 426/7). On 5 April 1623, Pieter Lefebure (of INVNO 643), Carel Cotteman and Pieter Gaillart, gold drawers, declared at the requesto fo Lenert Mulck, gold drawer in The Hague, that there were only two kinds of gold and silver thread, namely fine and false (the latter being made of copper) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p.488). On 16 October 1623, Pieter le Febure, Mathias Schouherinck, Pieter Gaillaiart, and Carel Cotteman (all goutraedtreckers) declared at the request of Jacques (Jacob) van Nispen, general master of the mints, that they had heard the heer Beveren , general of the mint, make some derogatory remarks concerning the octroy granted to the Dordrecht mint (Van Dillen, op.cit., p. 506). In 1625, Pieter Gaillart was surety for his brother Anthony when the latter purchased the house left by his father. In the accounting for the estate of Antony Gaillart de oude, dated 28 January 1628, Pieter Gaillart was said to owe 600 f. for an obligation and 212 f. 2 st. for goods purchased from the estate (WK 503/1192). He was the cousin of Jeroen and Marten Cornelisz. Gaillart.

BuyerEymert Jansz.
Buyer FamilyJansz., Eymert
Buyer NotesEijmert Jansz., shoemaker, widower of Niesje Pieters, was betrothed to Trijn Dircx on 21 June 1603. Both seemed to be illiterate. This is surprising because he seems to be identical with the individual named Eymert Jansz. who was named as guardian over his goods in the testament of Aert Eymertsz. (presumably his brother) and Lyntgen Wouters on 21 December 1606. However, the Orphan Chamber appointed Albert Buchertsz. seemtouwer (tanner of suede leather) as co-guardian, perhaps because the latter could draw up a report and accounting for the Chamber, which Eymert Jansz. could not (WK 5073/513, fol. 127). Albert Burchertsz., cited in R 38080, was the brother of Otto Burchertsz., who also made chamois (suede) leather, and the uncle of Burchert Otten of INVNO 988. An inventory of the goods of Albert Burchertsz., taken when he was absent, was dated 13 March 1623 (NA 590, film 4664). Eymert Jansz. apparently remarried a third time with Geertge Pieters, who was mentioned as his widow in the following deposition. On 2 July 1636, Jan van Os (probably de oude, of R 26894) declared at the request of Geertgen Pieters, widow of Eymert Jansz. that in the year 1630 he had lent money to Geertgen Pieters, which were then passed on to Jan Eymertsz., her son, to help him out in his financial difficulties. During the period of Jan Eymert's bankruptcy, Van Os had given over 1,600 f., to various persons who had been supplied leather by Eymert Jansz. in the expectation that with these payments the leather of Eymert Jansz. could be processed. (Eymert Jansz. apparently supplied raw leather to leather finishers on a putting out basis) (NA 695A, omslag 73, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 10 November 1636, Mr. Jacob Block, surgeon, declared at the request of Geertge Pieters, widow of Eymert Jansz., that he had been at the house of Geertge Pieters and of her son Jan Eymertsz. and had heard her son say, before his weakness, that she must have 1,100 f. (NA 695B, not. Jan Warnaerts, film 4981). It is not clear what this swachheijt was. On 25 August 1625, Jan Eymertsz., schoemacker, 22, assisted by his father Eymert Jansz., living on the Heeregracht, was betrothed to Griet Verbeeck, 23, assisted by Appolontje Verbeeck, her mother. Both were literate (DTB 665/292 and DTB 428/161). Griet Verbeeck was the sister of Susanna Verbeeck who was 24 years old when she married Jan Woutersz., 22, on 25 January 1629. He was assisted by his guardian Davit Brugman, she by her mother Apolonij Verbeeck (DTB 443/387). The widow of Eijmert Jansz. paid a tax of 40 f. in 1631, at which time she lived on the Heeregracht, on the West side of the Lelijgracht (Kohier, fol. 307 vo, p. 70). When Eymert Jansz. bought a painting in 1621 (R 27048), he was also said to be living on the Heeregracht. He was the father of Bastiaen Eymertsz. (R 26863) as well as of Jan Eymertsz. When Jan Eymertsz. died, he was apparently insolvent. On 20 March 1637, an agreement took place between Geertien Pieters, widow of Jan Eymertsz., and Coenradt (Willemsz.) van Ceulen, creditors of the desolate estate of Jan Eymertsz. The widow agreed to desist from all claims on the estate (NA 889, film 595).

BuyerJan van Os
Buyer FamilyOs, Jan van
Buyer NotesIt is not clear whether the buyer was Jan (Wilbertsz.) van Os (de oude) or Jan Claesz. van Os, although the first alternative, given his family connections, seems the more likely. Jan Wilbertsz. van Os (de oude), born about 1582, was the brother of Pelgrom van Os, who died in 1622 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). Pelgrom van Os was a merchant of South Netherlandish origin, born about 1578, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1604 and died in 1622 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 309). In 1631, Jan van Os (de oude) and the children of his brother Pelgrom van Os paid a tax of 300 f. They were living on the Singel, near the Warmoesgracht (Kohier, fol. 10, p. 4). Jan (de oude) and Pelgrom van Os were the sons of Wilbord Simonsz. van Os, born in Antwerp about 1556 (Gelderblom, p. 309), who invested 1,800 f. in the first subcription for V.O.C. shares. On 2 July 1636, Jan van Os (probably de oude), merchant, made a declaration at the request of Geertgen Pieters, the widow of Eymert Jansz. (of R 26883) regarding some money that he had lent her to help her son Jan Eymertsz. (NA 695A, fol. 73. Not. J. Warnaerts). Jan van Os de oude, who spent some time in La Rochelle before settling in Amsterdam (Gelderblom, ibid.), was buried on 21 August 1657 (Jaarboek C.B.G., 33(1979) p. 197). On 5 September 1641, Jan van Os de jonge, 25 years old, assisted by his uncle Jan van Os de oude, was betrothed to Susanna van Hertsbeeck, from Amsterdam, 18, assisted by her father Isaac van Hertsbeeck (Nederlandsche Leeuw 27(1905), col. 43). Jan van Os de jonge was the son of Pelgrom van Os and Catharina Hooftman (the daughter of Gillis Hooftman) (Jaarboek C.B.G. 33(1979), p. 197). Born ca. 1616, he was too young at the time of this sale to be the buyer of this lot. He was buried on 6 November 1663. On Isaack van Hertsbeeck and his brother Paulus, see the NOTES to R 32142. Susanna van Hertsbeeck's mother, Geertruyd van der Veecke, was the niece of Balthasar van der Veecke of INVNO 677. Gillis Hooftman, cited above, was one of the founders, when he was still living in Antwerp, of Netherlandish trade with Moscovy (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, 1970, p. 63). Only the act of betrothal of the less likely candidate, Jan Claesz. van Os, is known. On 31 March 1611, Jan Claesz. van Os, olyslager, 23 years old, living outside the Heijligeweg, assisted by the brothers Cornelis and Jan Claesz. [...], was betrothed to Gysbertge van Rosweijde, from Utrecht, assisted by her neef Splinter van Hemaert (DTB 666/273).
