BuyerIsaack Moors
Buyer FamilyMoors (Moers, Meurs), Isaack
Buyer NotesOn 29 October 1611, Isaack Moors, coperslager (copper smith), from Aken, 28 years old, living on the Voorburgwal, was betrothed to Lidia van Hukken, from Yperen, 30, living in the Huyvetterstraet, assisted by Elisabeth van Zuijlen, her aunt by marriage (DTB 416/28). He was said to be 32 and a copperslager when, together with Leon de la Tombe, 51, he made a deposition at the request of Harman Becx I and Aernoult Duyffkens, on 23 November 1612 concerning the making of kettles and other objects (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 17). Either his age given on the occasion of his betrothal or of this deposition must be a couple of years off, but the individual is surely the same. On 10 July 1615, Anthoni Slichers of R 20039 insinuated Pieter Becx, living in Cologne, concerning a copper mill which he had set up with his nephew Herman Becx (I), cited above. Herman Becx had apparently not fulfilled his part of the contract. Slicher now wanted Herman Becx expelled. Pieter Becx answered that he had no objection [Herman Becx] uyt de molen te stellen (Van Dillen, op.cit. pp. 110-111). There were two individuals named Herman Becx. It was almost certainly this Herman Becx I who appeared before the consistory of the Amsterdam Reformed Church because he had committed manslaughter in 1606. His pistol had apparently gone off without his pressing the trigger. He was not punished, because, it was said, he was rich. On or about 1616 he became insolvent and failed to reach an agreement with his creditors (Roodenburg, Onder het censuur, pp. 360-1, 380). On 2 March 1639, Herman Becx (II), bachelor, assisted by his brother Pieter Becx (II?), Herman Becx (III), his cousin, and Johan Meurs (Moors), his brother's cousin, signed a prenuptial contract with Maria van Breen, daughter of Anthony van Breen (cited in the NOTES to R 20074). Jacques and Jan Olis were co-signatories of the contract (NA 1594, Not. Willem Hasen). On 18 August 1640, the notary Willem Hasen certified that Isaack and Theodorus Becx, brothers, were the sons of Herman Becx (I?) and Margerita Potgieter, who had both died in Cologne. The two brothers were learning the notary's trade in Hasen's comptoir (NA 1601, fol. 95, Not. W. Hasen). It is likely but not certain that Herman Becx who died in Cologne is identical with the individual of that name frequently cited in Amsterdam documents. If so, his departure to Cologne may be linked to his bankruptcy in 1616. Johan Meurs was surely a close relative of Isaack Moors. In 1631 Isaack Moors was taxed 100 f., at which time he lived on the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 167, p. 39). On 20 April 1620, Meynart Caspars, on one side, and Abraham Claesz. and Isaack Meurs, on the other, signed a contract by the terms of which Meynart Caspers, as the owner of the copper mill on the Amstel, outside the Regulierspoort, would be obligated to beat copper for one year for the two other contractors (Van Dillen, Bronnen, op. cit. p. 359). On 12 November 1624, he signed a contract with his partners Wynant Jansz. van Wyningen, Bartelt Gerritsz. (of INVNO 172), Abraham Claesz. (of R 24949), Jan van Geleyne and Jan Moors, with a number of potgieters (pot casters) of Kampen, Deventer, Zwolle. By the terms of the contract, the suppliers from these three towns undertook to supply copper pots and pans for 12 f. per 100 pounds to the Amsterdam contractants but to charge at least 13 f. to other buyers (unless they were from one of these towns) (I. van Eeghen, Kopere potten en pannen, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 55 (1968), p. 222). In 1627, he bought a house in the Nes from Grietje Willems. The house was called de Blaeuwe Schaar (Maandblad Amstelodamum 50(1963), p. 126). On 23 February 1635, Isaac Moors appeared before the Orphan Chamber (with Pieter Decker) as the uncle and guardian of the children of Tielman van Vloock, merchant, who had been married to Maria Moors (WK 5073/789.) On 3 July 1635, the merchant Barent Andriesz. insinuated Isaack Moors for his failure to pay a letter of exchange (NA 596, fol. 531, Not. Lamberti). Barent Andriesz. died before 22 July 1650 when the inventory of his widow Lucijntje Pieters was taken (NA 908, film 1145). On the merchant Barent Andriesz., see also the NOTES to R 27935. On 8 April 1636, Isaack Moors, merchant, 56, made a deposition concerning some account books at the request of Jacob Volckertsz. from Leeuwarden. The accounting was said to check with the books (NA 1276, film 1353, Not. Pieter Barcman). He apparently went bankrupt shortly after the letter of exchange was protested. His wife (unnamed, but perhaps Lidia van Hukken) was at first denied Communion by the Church Council but relented in view of her weakness (Roodenburg, Onder Censuur p. 379). The death inventory of Isaack Moors, under benefit of inventory (on the basis of a writ from the Court of Holland), was taken on 15 September 1649 (INVNO 1226). It was requested by his children Lambert Moors and Maria Moors, married to Willem van Lit.

BuyerHendrick Hudde
Buyer FamilyHudde, Hendrick (Hendricksz.)
Buyer NotesHendrick Hendricksz. Hudde, 1591-1637, was an important merchant dealing with the Near East (in company with Jan Hellincx (of R 36235). Jan Hellincx (or Helling) was married to Hendrick's sister Geertruyd Hudde. He paid a tax of 775 f. in 1631, at which time he belonged to the 36 raden of the Vroedschap. He was betrothed to Clara Nijs (1599-1648), the daughter of the sugar refiner Adam Nijs and of Clara Colijn, on 17 November 1616. Hendrick Hendricksz. Hudde was the brother of Gerrit Hendricksz. Hudde (married to Maria Witsen) of R 7698 and the cousin of Regina Hudde who married Arent Cornelisz. Coster of R 21396 (DTB 421/24; Elias, Vroedschap, p.327; Kohier, fol. 3). Adam Nijs, merchant and sugar refiner, was born in Antwerp and was first noted in Amsterdam in 1615 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 309). He was the executor of the testament of the painter Louis Finson (Finsonius) on 19 September 1617 (Oud Holland 36(1918), p. 199.) In 1606, Hendrick Hudde, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. He was then 15 or 16 years old (GAA, 91/65 F 693) (since his father Hendrick Arentsz. Hudde had died in 1596, the identification is secure). Adam Nijs (1567-1623) was the brother of Hans Nijs (1580-1657), likewise sugar refiner, who was married to Sara van der Marckt.
