BuyerRocus Pietersz.
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Rocus (Rochus) (van de Capelle)
Buyer NotesRochus Pietersz. (van de Capelle) was born in Delft in 1578 and became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1604. He was an important merchant op 't Water. On 23 November 1603, Rochus Pietersz. van de Capelle was married to Catharina Jacobs, daughter of Rombout Jacobsz. (de oude) of R 31491 and of Claerken Claes Colijn (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 515). On 28 August 1608, the Orphan Chamber named Rombout Jacobsz., Aert Kemp, and Rochus Pietersz. as guardians over the estate of the children left by Heyndrick Vaecht, jeweler (cited in the NOTES to R 25311) (WK 5073/513, fol. 131vo). Aert Kemp was the father of Hendrick Kemp of R 25363. Rochus Pietersz. was the father of Clara van de Capelle who married Bernard de Moor on 22 January 1630 (the list of guests to the wedding, which included Rochus Pietersz. and his wife and many other members of the Rombout Jacobsz. and Indische Raven clan, has been preserved (Nederlandse Leeuw 44(1626), p. 9). On Bernard de Moor, son of Jacob de Moor and Elisabeth Ruijschenberg, bookkeeper in Amsterdam, and amateur of poetry, see Sv. Veldhuijzen, David Beck, Spiegel van mijn leven; Haags dagboek 1624, 1993, p. 256). In July 1622, a merchant named Rokus Pietersz., presumed to be identical with the buyer of this lot, signed a petition against the competition of certain bargemen and workers in the carting away of ashes (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933). pp. 458-9). On 4 October 1624, Rochus Pietersz., schoonman of Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven II, together with Jacques (Jacobsz.) Rombouts and Rombout Jacobsz. (de jonge of R 26967), were named as co-guardians of the children of Pieter Indische Raven I. In 1631, Rocus Pietersz. living near the St. Anthonys Poort, paid a tax of 150 f. He was a neighbor of his cousin Rombout Jacobsz. de jonge (see also R 33990) (Kohier, fol. 114vo., p. 27). He died before 18 December 1635, when the honorable Catarina Jacobs, widow of Rochus Pietersz., together with Pieter and Claes Rochus, sons and heirs of Rochus Pietersz., made a declaration concerning certain merchants in Hamburg. The declaration was signed by Pieter and Niclaes Rocus van de Capelle (sons of Rochus Pietersz.) (NA 597, fol. 200-1). Rochus Pietersz.'s wife Catarina Jacobs was closely related (perhaps the sister of) Rombout Jacobsz. I of R 31326. The inventory of Catharina de Marez, widow of Pieter de Marez, was drawn up on 19 May 1671 at the request of Rochus van de Capelle, husband of Sara de Marez (III) (NA 2410, fol. 117 and foll., film 2551, INVNO 135). This Rochus van de Capelle may have been the grandson of Rochus Pietersz. Sara de Marez (or Marees) (III) remarried with Lodewijck de Bas II (see the TEXT of R 222 of Montias1).

BuyerHendrick Colijn
Buyer FamilyColijn (Colyn), Hendrick (II)
Buyer NotesThe sugar refiner Hendrick Colijn, the son of Jan Colijn I and of Elsje Michiels (of INVNO 758), and the nephew of Hendrick Colijn I, was born in Amsterdam in 1593. On 23 May 1624, Hendrick Colijn (II), from Amsterdam, 31, assisted by his brother Michiel Colijn (of R 22124), living in the Teerketelsteech, was betrothed to Gertgen IJsbrant Ben, 29, assisted by her brother IJsbrant Ben, oud schepen, living on the Koningsgracht (DTB 429/142). Gertgen was the daughter of Ysbrand Albertsz. Ben (1556-1625), brewer in de Nachtglas outside the Singel, member of the Vroedschap until 3 November 1618 when he was removed by Stadhouder Maurits. Her mother was Ben's third wife Heyltge Wessels, born in 1568, who was buried on 7 February 1636 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp.217-8). In 1631, Hendrick Colijn (II) paid a tax of 100 f. on his wealth (including the inheritance). At that time, he lived on the West side of the Achterburchwal, thus near Rombout Jacobsz. I, the brother of the deceased. His aunt Clara Colijn (the sister of his father Jan) was married to Rombout Jacobsz. I. On 5 February 1634, Henrick Colijn and Geertgen IJsbrants Ben had their daughter Elsken baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301). Elsken (or Elsje) married the painter Adriaen Backer (born in 1633), the nephew of the better known Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, on 9 August 1669. A daughter, named Jannetje, born in Amsterdam about 1629, married Joan Kieft, sugar baker, the son of Pieter Jansz. Kieft (who was in turn the son of Jan Gerritsz. Kieft of R 20503), on 12 May 1652 (Jaarboek C.B.G., op. cit. p. 69). On 12 August 1636, Herman Ben, doctor in medicine, transferred to his father-in-law Hendrick Colijn all the claims he had on the estate of Heyltge Wessels arising from his inheritance from his father Ysbrant Ben (NA 995, film 1225, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 23 June 1643, Hendrick Colyn (II) had notary Gerrit Coren insinuate his brother Jan Colyn (II) regarding the administration of the goods left by his other brother Michiel Colyn and the latter's wife Catharina Colyns (NA 997, film 1882). Hendrick Colijn II, whose brother Michiel was the father of Jan Colijn de Thovion (III), who was married to Abraham Anthonisz.'s daughter Ida, signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He was a schutter in the company of Captain Allaert Cloeck, which was portrayed by Thomas de Keyser in 1632. He was active as a sugar refiner from 1624 to 1631 (Poelwijk, In Dienste van Suyckerbacken, p. 257 and Rijksmuseum, All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum, p. 319). He died in 1651 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 67(1980), p. 138).

BuyerJacob Jacobsz.
Buyer FamilyRombouts (?), Jacob Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Jacob Jacobsz. Rombouts, the brother of the late Pieter Jacobsz. Rombouts of this inventory and the brother of Rombout Jacobsz. de jonge of R 26967. He was the son of Rombout Jacobsz. (1550-1629) and of Claerken Colijn (died in 1618), He was born in Antwerp in 1581 and died in Amsterdam on 15 October 1626. He was a merchant on the Lastage and a Regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis. He married Maria du Gardyn (born in 1594), daughter of Nicolaes du Gardyn and of Margaretha Balestel, on 20 April 1621 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 80-81). A few months before his own death, on 26 January 1626, he made an appearance before the Orphan Chamber as one of the relatives of Pieter Indische Raven (WK 5072/549). After his death in 1626, Maria du Gardyn remarried with Willem Adriaensz. Raep (Elias, loc. cit.) The sister of Jacob Jacobsz. Rombouts, named Claertge Rombouts, married Aert Kemp on 18 February 1625 (see the NOTES to R 25363). It is less likely that the buyer was Jacob Jacquesz. Rombouts of R 19454.

BuyerDirck de Keijser
Buyer FamilyKeijser, Dirck (Aertsz.) de
Buyer NotesDirck Aertsz. de Keijser was baptized on 30 October 1594. He was the son of Aert de Keyser (Kijser) who was portrayed as a shooterin the company of Geurt Dircx van Beuningen by Jan Tengnagel around 1612 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 137). On 18 January 1623, Dirck Aertsz. de Keyser, 28, assisted by his father Aert de Keyser, living on the Nieuwe Houtgraft, was betrothed to Clara Jacobs, 20, assisted by her father Pieter Jacobsen (DTB 427/392). The father of the bride was most probably Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven I of R 31326, born about 1570. Aert Cornelisz. de Keyser, the father of Hendrick, Cornelis, and Dirck Aertsz. de Keyser, became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1593. He was a kistemacker (coffin maker, joiner or boxmaker) and a lumber merchant (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 175). Aert de Keijser was buried on 7 October 1630 (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 66.) On 22 January 1630, Dirck de Keyser and his wife Claertje Jacobs (along with his cousin Pieter Hendricksz. de Keyser) and her father Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven I were invited to the wedding of Bernard de Moor and Clara van Capelle (Nederlandse Leeuw, 44 (1926), col. 9). On 23 October 1634, Dirck de Keijser, lumber dealer, named his brother Cornelis de Keijser to collect money due to him from the heirs of Jan Claesz. in Utrecht (NA 910, Notary Pieter Eyloff). On 17 August 1647, nine shipcarpenters bound themselves to Sr. Dirck de Keyser, merchant, to work for two years in Sweden (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 495.) Dirck Aertsz. de Keyser paid a tax of 20 f., at which time he lived on the Amstel (Kohier, fol. 152 vo., p. 35). The above-named Pieter Hendricksz. de Keyser, who was city mason (stadtsmetselaer) in 1638, was married to Magdalena Jacobs, the sister of Clara Jacobs, the wife of Dirck de Keyser (Pieter Hendricksz.'s cousin) (Nederlandse Leeuw, loc. cit. and WK 5073/789, appearance after Magdalena Jacobs's death, on 28 September 1638). On 11 April 1629, a dispute between Pieter de Keyser and the merchant Laurens Swijs was submitted to the arbitration of notary Jacob Jacobsz. and the stone sculptor Jan Goosens (on whom see the NOTES to R 22492). The arbiters decided that Laurens Swijs would have to pay Pieter de Keyser 160 f. instead of 791 f. that De Keyser claimed. Two months later, Swijs insinuated Pieter de Keyser again. The issue turned on wooden sculptures, apparently on a ship, some of which had been damaged (Van Dillen, op.cit. pp. 674 and 679-680). On 15 May 1638, Michiel Jacobsz., sworn broker, 45, declared at the request of Pieter de Keyser that he had bought some prunes on the order of Jeremias de Maitre (merchant) (NA 867, fol. 156). On 28 August 1638, Pieter van Delft (cited in the NOTES to R 21468) and Mr. Pieter de Keyser, both steenhowers, declared at the request of Pieter Adriaensz., carpenter, that they had been arbiters in 1634 in a dispute concerning the accounting for sculptured work between Dirck Gerritsz. Doodshooft and Mr. Arent Gerritsz., sculptor. The outcome of the settlement was that Arent Gerritsz. had paid the money due to Pieter Schuurman, presently burgomaster of Zwol (NA 1279, Notary H. Schaeff). On 10 October 1662, the guardians of the minor children of the late Dirck de Keyser, named Pieter and Aert, sold a house in Vlooienberch to the city mason Jan Willemsz. Brederode (Maandblad Amstelodamum 58(1971), p. 61). Hendrick Aertsz. de Keyser was one of the numerous merchants who signed the 1645 petition calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 89). The siblings of Dirck Aertsz., according to the Minuutregister of the W.K., dated 9 June 1626, and the DTB were: Machteltje, married to the Utrecht sculptor Nicasius Jansz. van Eyckelbeeck, 31, Dirck, 30, Tomas, 26, Cornelis, 23, Neeltgen and Jan, twins, 21, and Hendrick, 18, all created by Lysbeth Jans, who died shortly before this date (a daughter named Lysbet, baptized on 29 March 1598, had died at an early age) (WK 5073/549 Ann Adams, The Paintings of Thomas de Keyser, pp. 478-9). There were thus three men named Thomas de Keyser: the son of Aert Cornelisz., the son of Hendrick Cornelisz. (sculptor and architect), and the son of Gerrit Cornelisz. de Keyser.

BuyerRombout Jacobsz.
Buyer FamilyJacobsz., Rombout (II)
Buyer NotesRombout Jacobsz. de jonge, the son of Rombout Jacobsz. de oude and of Clara Claes Colijn, was baptized on 3 November 1585 in the O.K. in the presence of Lysbeth Claes (Colijn) (DTB 1/270). He was the brother of Pieter Jacobsz. Rombouts (Indischeraven) the present inventory and of Jacob Jacobsz. Rombouts (1581-1626), who married Maria du Gardyn (Elias, Vroedschap, p.81). He died on 20 November 1652. He was a prominent grain dealer, associated in business with Cornelis Bicker and Compagnie. He was a director of the West Indies Company from 1622 to 1624, a regent of the Dolhuys in 1619, and a kerckmeester of the O.K. in 1636 (Elias, ibid.). It was probably he, rather than his father, who freighted ships to Candia on 17 November 1618 and on 22 October 1622 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), pp. 205 and 411.) He married Hillegonda van Baersdorp on 27 December 1616 (DTB 421/40 and Elias, ibid.). He paid a tax of 165 f. in 1631, living on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 115 vo., p. 27). Hillegonda van Baersdorp was the daughter of Jan Jansz. van Baersdorp, burgomaster of Leiden in 1602, and of Dirckgen Claes van Heemskerck. It may be the son Jan of Jan Jansz. van Baersdorp who was the buyer of R 32515. His daughter Maria was married to the attorney mr. Pieter Aernouts (De Navorscher, 28(1878), p. 438.)
