BuyerJan van Straten voors.
Buyer FamilyStraten, Jan (Fransz.) van der
Buyer NotesJan Fransz. van der Straten was a merchant, born in Antwerp, who first spent some time in Cologne and Hamburg, before settling in Amsterdam, where he was fist noted in 1610 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314). On 9 February 1612, Jan van der Straten was betrothed to Sara Monx (alias Munninx or Meunicx) (DTB 661/332). Sara Meunicx was the daughter of the Haarlem merchant Willem Meunicx, the brother of Cornelis Meunicx, who had been active in the trade with Russia, in partnership with the brothers Moucheron (Eric Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, 2003, p. 264-6). Jan Frans van der Straten was an importer of English woolens via Hamburg, where he was living in 1602 when he invested 12,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. Jan van der Straten, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted a ship to Nieuleus in Sweden on 20 October 1620 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 186(1983), p. 410). He invested another 27,000 f. in the subscription of 1612, by which time he was living in Amsterdam. In May 1624, the sugar refiner Hans van de Berge ceded his sugar refinery to Jan van der Straten to settle a debt that he owed to Van der Straten (see R 212 of Montias1). Jan van der Straten died around 1630. In 1631, his heirs, living on the Calverstraet, were taxed 1000 f. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61, 126, and 259, and Kohier, fol. 255vo. , p. 58.) The daughter of Jan Fransz. van der Straten, also named Sara, married the merchant Pieter Trip on 27 June 1628 in the presence of her father (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 267). Pieter Trip was associated with Louis de Geer in the production of metal cannons and other armaments (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 94(2002), p.55). On 16 July 1636, Albert Tjason (of INVNO 299), as husband and guardian of Paschina van der Straten; Anna van der Strate, spinster; and Franchoys van der Straete, for themselves and as holding a procuration from their mother Maycken Jans van Noucke (?), all heirs of David van der Straten, their brother, went to the house of Samuel Sautijn, where Anna (an error for Sara?) Munincx, widow of Jan van der Straten, was living and, in her absence, notified her son Jan as follows. Anna Munincx should procure an inventory of the goods left by David van der Straten (who had died in the house of Jan van der Straten I) and give the insinuants all the papers and accounts pertaining to the estate. Jan van der Straten II acknowledged the insinuation on his mother's behalf and asked for a copy (NA 889, film 595). The merchant Jan van der Straten II was said to be 26 in a deposition dated 16 June 1634 about some accounts that were in the hands of the servant of Marco and Bernardo Moens in Venice (see the NOTES to R 25265). Anna Muncx or Municx was the wife of Gerrit van Schoonhoven of R 31988. Isabeau van der Straten, a daughter of Jan Fransz. van der Straten and Sara Meunicx married Gabriel Marselis (of R 8319) on 15 June 1635. (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.871). Another daughter married Celis Marselis, the brother of Gabriel Marselis.
