BuyerPieter de Schilder bij de [...]huys sluijs
Buyer FamilySchilder, Pieter de (I)
Buyer NotesIn 1606, Pieter de Schilder, living in de Fortuyn in the Warmoesstraet (the house of Pieter, Daniel, and Maximiliaen van Geel), bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 f. (GAA 4/80 F 29). On 20 October 1607. Pieter de Schilder of Rotterdam, 23 years of age, living on the Singel, assisted by his guardian Martin van der Zande, was betrothed to Elisabeth Cobbaut, 19, living on the Warmoesstraet, assisted by Aernout Cobbaut (II) and Anna van Valckenb[urgh], her parents (DTB 413/28). Barbara Cobbaut, the sister of Elisabeth Cobbaut, was the first wife of Balthasar van der Veecke of the present inventory. Anna van Valckenburgh was the sister of Elisabeth van Valckenburgh, who married the poet and knight Jacob Cats. On Aernout Cobbaut II and III, see R 21250. Pieter de Schilder was a director (bewinthebber) of the V.O.C. On 16 December 1613, he signed a protest against the dividend policy of the V.O.C., with a number of other shareholders (including Jan van Wely) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 102.) Pieter de Schilder and Andries Rijckaert supervised the drawing up of the inventory of Arnout Cobbout III, who died in 1616 (INVNO 543, R 448 of Montias1). On Andries Rijckaert see the TEXT of R 448 of Montias1. Music was played in the home of Pieter de Schilder. Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck (of R 27883) dedicated his second book of psalm music to eight philomuses de la très renommée ville d'Amsterdam including Pieter de Schilder (Giskes in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 86(1994), note 16). In 1631, Pieter de Schilder paid a tax of 375 f., at which time he was still living on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 10, p. 4). On 1 January 1639, Sr. Pieter de Schilder and Marcus van Valckenburgh (of INVNO 1238), merchants, insinuated Balthasar de Visscher (of R 20375), concerning the estate of his late wife Sara Cobbaut and the guardians named in her testament (NA 992, film 1221, fol. 56). Pieter de Schilder was buried in the O.Z.K. on 10 October 1652 (DTB 1062/103). Elisabeth de Schilder (1609-1648), the daughter of Pieter de Schilder and Elisabeth Cobbaut, married the merchant Jan de Marees Danielsz. (1596-1665), widower of Christina Segers, the daughter of Jasper Segersz. of R 20521, in 1630. On 11 January 1638, Anna Desmarees, widow of Jan Nieuborgh, merchant in his life time, drew up her testament. She named Jean de la Court (of R 23699) as guardian of Jan Desmarees Danielsz., her nephew, in lieu of two others (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). The children of Jan de Marees Danielsz. and Elisabeth de Schilder were: Anna Maria de Marees (born 1643), married Jan Bas Nicolaesz., son of Nicolas Bas and of Immetje Vinck (of INVNO 150) (after his death, she remarried with Daniel van Liebergen III in 1665); Elisabeth (born 1636) married Johan de Bas on 8 August 1654 (son of Lodewyck de Bas of INVNO 303) (after his death, she remarried with Joan van Wallendael, the son of Jasper van Wallendael of R 20606, in 1667); Daniel (III), born in 1641, married Margareta Hooghtwoud; Johanna (born 1632), married Jacob Triglandius II, the son of the famous Calvinist predikant of the same name (1624-1664); Susanna, married Abraham van Liebergen, baptized on 23 May 1638, on 21 March 1663; and Petronella (born 1646), married Franchoijs Franchoijsz. van der Voort (or Voorde), the son of Franchoijs van der Voorde (of R 27261) in 1686 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990), pp. 181-2). Elisabeth de Schilder remarried, after the death of Jan Danielsz. de Marees, with Daniel van Liebergen I (1590-1646), son of Paulus van Liebergen and Tanneken le Thor (Nederlandsche Leeuw 48(1930), col. 125/126). On Abraham van Liebergen, who went bankrupt in 1669, see INVNO 1351. Daniel van Liebergen I was active in the management of the W.I.C. (Oud Holland 8(1890), p. 53). Pieter de Schilder lived at the time of his death on the Kloveniersburgwal in a house which was next occupied by Tyman Hinloopen (1572-1637), the father of the art collector Michiel Hinloopen (1619-1718) (J. van der Waals, De prentschat van Michiel Hinloopen, Exh. Cat. Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, 1988, p.30). Daniel van Liebergen II, who was probably the son of Daniel van Liebergen I, was a brandy distiller who was said to endanger the neighborhood where he operated his distillery through risk of fire. He was also accused by his neighbors of allowing his pigs (as many as 150) to run wild in his whole garden and lot (document dated 26 December 1671, Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 849).

BuyerPrinsen of Buys
Buyer FamilyPrinsen (Princen)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Nicolaes Prins, who was married to Pieternelle Herren. His presumed son Lambert Princen II (1547-1591), spices dealer and apothecary on the Damsluijs, was married to Aeltgen Hendrix van Groll, who died before 22 December 1627 when an inventory of her goods was drawn up. Since the inventory contained a painting of the Rex Hispania and a panel painting of Mary, the chances are that she at least was Roman Catholic (NA 567, Not. Lamberti). On 21 January 1627, Hendrick Reynst (of R 28571), presently alderman, and Hendrick Coppit brought to the Orphan Chamber obligations worth a total of 14,000 f., pursuant to the testament of Aeltgen Hendrix Grol, their schoonmoeder, on behalf of Nelletgen, 20, and Huybert, 18, the two children left by Nicolaes Prins, whose mother was Pieternelle Herren, for their grandmother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). Aeltgen Hendrix remarried with Pieter Caron before 20 January 1637 (NA 996, film 1226). Lambert Princen was the father of Elisabeth Princen, who married Hendrick Reynst, cited above. He was a wine dealer (NA 996, ca. 5 February 1637). His connection with (Paulus ?) Buys is not known. Buys, in addition to Paulus (of R 23234), may be David Buys, mentioned in R 24944, or Pieter Buys of R 29518.

BuyerThobias van Immen
Buyer FamilyImmen, Thobias van
Buyer NotesIn 1606, Tobias van Immen, living outside the Gasthuispoort in de Gulden Olifant, bought lots for 2 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery. Hans van Immen, who may have been his son or brother (INVNO 314, R 232 of Montias1), was also mentioned in the same house (GAA, 86/16 F 645). On 30 October 1610, Thobias van Immen (signs van Imen), zydereeder (silk winder), widower of Anneken Vermeulen, was betrothed to Susanna van der Veken, from Antwerp, 32, assisted by her brother Balthasar van der Veke, living 12 years on the Oostindische Singel (DTB 414/402). Thus Tobias van Immen was the brother in law of Balthasar van der Veecke, the late owner of the goods sold. Tobias van Immen was the uncle (by marriage) of Geertruijd van der Veken (Veecke). She was 18 when he assisted her upon her betrothal to Isaacq van Hersbeecq, 30, on 29 April 1620 (DTB 424/215). Isaack van Hertsbeeck was a creditor of Rembrandt, with whom he is linked in various documents. Balthasar van der Veecke, of the present inventory, was a merchant who, according to a deposition of 2 October 1610, sold lumber to Willem Kick representing the compagnie van lackwercken (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 689). On Willem Kick, see R 29291. Tobias van Immen paid a tax of 25 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Cingel (Kohier, fol. 11 vo., p. 4).

BuyerPieter Meulemans inde Isel
Buyer FamilyMeulemans, Pieter
Buyer NotesPieter Meuleman, from Antwerp, rented the inn De Keiserscroon on the Kalverstraet in 1616 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 332). This identification is confirmed by the address in de Isel (in de Nijsel) on the O.Z. of Amsterdam (see below). It may or may not be the same individual named Pieter Meulmans, who paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, living on the East side of the Ossemart (Kohier, fol. 254 vo., p. 58) (the Ossemarckt was located close to the Kalverstraet). On 27 August 1631, Pieter Meulemans transferred 274 f. to the wine dealer Harmen van Leeuwen (NA 371, fol. 165, Not. W. Cluyt). On 30 May 1635, Juffr. Anna Marschack, widow of Pieter Meulemans, living in the Keyserscroon with her stepson Joost Crachtingh, innkeeper, named Not. Nicolaes Verduijn in Utrecht to collect money due to her in Vianen (NA 372, fol. 44, Not. W. Cluyt). On 24 July 1635, Joost Crachtingh was said to be herbergier in de Keyserscroon in de Nijsel (ibid. fol. 85).
