BuyerJacob Andriesz. Sael
Buyer FamilySael, Jacob Andriesz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of the late Andries Sael (whose portrait he bought at this auction). On 21 April 1623, Jacob Andriessoon Zaal, schipper, 28, no living parents, assisted by Hilletje Egberts, his behoude mere (mother-in-law) was betrothed to Lutje Jans, 24, assisted by her mother Jannetje Alders, living Op de Wael (DTB 428/30). Jacob Andriesz. was the brother of Jan Andriesz. of R 27229 and of Barthout Andriesz. Sael of R 27228, On 23 September 1636, skipper Jacob Andriesz. Sael, 42, in command of the ship named Jupiter, testified at the request of Jan Jacobsz. Hop, merchant, about the delivery of bags from Livorno (NA 695B, film 4821, Not. J. Warnaerts). Jan Jacobsz. Hop, born about 1607, was the son of Jacob Jansz. Hoop, goldsmith, who died before 3 December 1628 when his godmother, Maritgen Jans, wife of Herman Root, appeared on his behalf before the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/789). On 27 October 1638, Jacob Andriesz. Sael, 44, living in Amsterdam, made a deposition at the request of the Arminians in Smirna (about the time he had been skipper on the Jupiter) (NA 696A, film 4982, Not. J. Warnaerts). Lutje Jans (the wife of Jacob Sael) was one of the heirs of Jannetgen Alberts, last widow of Willem Bastiaensz. She received (by random lot) goods valued at 116 f. She seems to have been the sister of Baertge Jans, wife of Jacques van Heulen, and of Egbert Jansz., smith (NA 413, film 1381, inventory dated 6 May 1642). Jacob Sael was buried on in the O.K. on 12 May 1664 (DTB 1047/100). The lumber dealer Dirck Jacobsz. Sael, who contributed 1,000 f. to a joint project of lumber dealers to set up wood-sawing mills in the vicinity of Amsterdam, was probably related to Jacob Sael.

BuyerBarthout Andriesz. Sael
Buyer FamilySael, Barthout Andriesz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of the late Andries Jacobsz. Sael. He was only about 20 years old at the time of this sale and bought his own portrait (R 6359). He was the brother of Jan Andriesz. Sael of R 27229 and of Jacob Andriesz. Sael of R 27227. On 15 June 1618, Pieter Jansen van Purmerent, 46, and Barthout Andriesz. Sael, 23, made a deposition concerning a ship that had come from Venice (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 10 January 1625, Barthout Andriesz. Sael, skipper, from Amsterdam, 28 years old, no living parents, assisted by his uncle Pieter Jacobsz. Sael, living on the Singel, was betrothed to Gierte Cornelis, from Amsterdam, 24, assisted by her mother Dieuwer Simonsdr. (DTB 429/353). On 18 April 1633, Claes Gerritsz. Spangaert, 45, Marten Pietersz. Rob, 42, Marten Janssen, 40, and Barthout Andriesz. Sael, 38, testified at the request of Pieter Trip on the loading of a ship (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). By 12 July 1636, Sael was said to be the widower of Gierte Cornelis, with whom he had had two children, and he acknowledged owing money on a mortgage on the house De Haringh (The (Golden) Herring), situated on the Nieuwe Dijck (NA 597, fol. 437, Not. Lamberti). On 17 October 1640, Marten Pietersz. Rob, Barthoult Zael, Lambert Albertsz. Olthoff, Gerrit Gerritsz. Nut and Jan Joostsz. van Veen signed a contract to set up a company of powder mills, which would be managed by Zael, Rob, and Nut (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp.277-8). On or about 16 January 1642, Barthout Andriesz. Sael, on one side, and Jannetje Cornelis, widow of Allert Gerbrantsz. Schildt (of R 20202), assisted by her son and guardian Gerbrant Allertsz. Schildt (II), came to an agreement concerning the house The Golden Herring on the N.D. Sael was to have and keep the house for himself and his heirs (NA 997, film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren). See also the document of 28 May 1643 in the NOTES to R 20202. By May 1643, Giertie Cornelis had died and Schildt was remarried with Aefje Jacobs Blaeuhelm (probably the daughter of Jacob Jacobsz. Blaeuwhelm of R 30623). Already, the newly remarried Schildt and Aefje Jacobs had had their son Jacob baptized in the O.K. on 15 January 1640 (DTB 7/234). On 12 December 1636, Jan van Dalen, stone (or brick) dealer (cited in the NOTES to R 7696) bought half of the South wall of a house on the South side of the Brouwersgracht, between the Herengracht and the Keizersgracht, behind the lot of Bartel Sael, sailmaker (NA 843, fol. 1408, Not. Hoogeboom). On 7 February 1637, Cornelis Martsz. Pronck (of R 32466), merchant, insinuated Barthout Sael. The notary declared on his behalf that he had sold a part of a ship to Sael for 490 f., which Sael had failed to pay for (NA 890, film 595). Aeltje Sael, the daughter of the late Barthout Sael, was buried on 18 October 1681 (DTB 1056/2580).
