Buyersolvit [crossed out: Pieter Jansz. Kan]
Buyer FamilyKan (Can), Pieter Jansz.
Buyer NotesOn 12 December 1612, the masters of the Orphan Chamber appointed Jacob Jansz. Goetcoop to administer the goods accruing to Pieter Jansz. Kan, the brother of his wife (WK 5073/513). On October 14, 1617, Pieter Jansz. Kan, cheese merchant (kaeskooper), declared that, due to the plague that raged in Holland, many cheese sellers living in the Rhine district did not come to Holland to sell their products (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 44(1929), p. 255). On 29 October 1636, Pieter Jansz. Can declared that he owed his father Jan Jacobsz. Can (of R 27297) 150 f. which I have given him of my own free wheel above that which my father inherited from my late mother, as long as he lives and for his upkeep (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). Pieter Jansz. Kan, like his father, was probably Roman Catholic (his uncle Pieter Jacobsz. was an R.C. priest). Pieter Jansz. Kan was perhaps the brother of Willem Jansz. Kan of R 27915.

BuyerGerrit Jacobsz. Herinc
Buyer FamilyHerinc(k) (or Haringh), Gerrit Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the bode in charge of the auction. When he was betrothed, at the age of 27, with Lysbeth Pieters Delft on 10 March 1601, he was said to be a sailor (varentgezel). He was assisted on this occasion by his father Jacob Gerritsz. Haringh. Lysbeth Pieters was 26 (DTB 409/346). In 1606, Geret Jacopsz. Hering, living op Sint Clarenbeeck, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. (GAA, 12/12 F 81). On 24 June 1621, Christian van Winckel, retail merchant (cramer) exhibited to the Orphan Chamber for his four children procreated by his late wife Mayken Arents, a record of all the woolen clothes and the silverwork that are mentioned in an inventory that, he, the appearer, had brought to the Chamber, which he had handed over to Gerrit Jacobsz. Haringh to sell in the coming days and to bring the proceeds to the Chamber. The proceeds of the auction actually came to 200 f. which were invested in an Orphan Chamber obligation issued by Herman Hendricksz., retail merchant on 9 November 1622. The auction could not be found in the surviving notebooks, which are missing for this date (WK 5073/789). Gerrit Jacobsz. was also involved in the auctions held by the V.O.C. An entry in the Kostboeck of the minor children of Hans Thijsz. de oude, dated 11 February 1618, states that f 7:10:-- were given to Gerrit Jacobsz., auctioneer (wtroeper) for 6 porcelain dishes bought in the auction (wtroep) of the East Indies Company this past September (Arch. Thys, Library of the University of Leyden, no. 112A). On 25 September 1626, Gerrit Jacobsz. bought bulbs at the auction sale of Pieter Pietersz. tuynman (WK 5073/952). On 11 February 1636, Jacob Gerritsz., porceleyn vercoper (probably identical with Jacob Gerritsz. Haring, the father of the buyer, of R 36635) gave Gerrit Jacobsz. Haringh, auctioneer (affslager)_ a procuration to act on his behalf (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). In 1639, the daughter of Gerrit Jacobsz. Haring, named Elisabeth, married Christoffel Indische Raven, who was also a buyer at auction (R 33990). Another daughter, named Dorothea, was first married to Gerrit Stoffelsz. and then to Jan Hendricxsz. Admirael (of R 35467), on 15 August 1643 (DTB 459/377). According to an act dated 28 March 1647, his son Pieter Gerritsz. (II) helped him collect money proceeding from the porcelain auctions that he was conducting for the V.O.C. (NA 1276, Not. P. Barcman). Gerrit Jacobsz. was buried with his wife Lysbeth Pieters in the Nieuwe Kerck on 3 August 1649 (I.E. van Eeghen, Het Amsterdamse Sint Lucasgilde ..., Jaarboek Amstelodamum, vol. 61(1969), p. 79.)

BuyerJan Jacobsz. Kan
Buyer FamilyKan, Jan Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesJan Jacobsz. Can bought lots in the 1606 lottery of 1606. He lived at the time op 'd hoeck van de Dirck van Hasselsteeg in de Vergulde olypyp (GAA 11/6 F 73). He was married to Griet Jans who died before 27 July 1621 when Zeger Pietersz., grain dealer, and Lambert Princen, the uncle by marriage and the cousin respectively, were appointed guardians over the couple's children by the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/513, fol. 186). Lambert Princen was the father of Elisabeth Princen who married Hendrick Reynst of R 28571. He died before 22 December 1627 when the death inventory of his widow, Aeltgen Hendricx van Grol, was taken (NA 567, Not. Lambert Lamberti). Aeltgen Hendricx (van) Grol was the sister of Pieter Hendricx Grol, living on the Oud Hoogsstraet, who bought lots in the Haarlem lottery in 1606 (GAA 78/22 F 603). Pieter Hendricx Grol died before 1631 when his widow, living on the Singel, paid a tax of f. 26:13: 4 (Kohier fol14vo, p.5, name misspelled Gros). Jan Jacobsz. Kan was probably the son of Jacob Pietersz. Kan and of Griet Jans, who both died at Christmas 1624 (INVNO 283 of R 200 of Montias1). He was the brother of the R.C. priest Pieter Jacobsz. Can, who passed his testament on 10 October 1632, naming his sister Hillegont Jacobs Cannendr. as his universal heir. He left his brother Jan Jacobsz. Can 30 f. under condition that he accept this testament (NA 578, fol. 228, Not. Lamberti, Extracten). By 29 October 1636, Jan Jacobsz. Can was still alive, but his wife had died. He was probably in straightened circumstances, which induced his son Pieter Jansz. Kan to give him, of his own free will, 150 f. for his upkeep (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). Jan Jacobsz. Can may also have been the father of Willem Jansz. Kan (of R 27915) who died in 1619. Jan Jachopsen Kan was buried on 18 October 1638 (DTB 1045/109).

Buyer FamilyBoermans
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Adriaen Boermans I who was buried on 25 October 1623, from his house de Botter in the Warmoesstraert (DTB 1089A/36) or his son Adriaen Boermans II who prepared the Reckening of 15 May 1626 concerning the estate of Andries de Graeuw for the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/1191). Whether father or son, he was probably a relative of De Graeuw (INVNO 682). Adriaen Boermans (or Bourmans) (II) was said to be the business partner, along with Joost Boesot, of Andries de Graeuw. He paid a tax of 375 f. in 1631, when he was living on the East side of the Warmoesstraet, apparently in the house where his father had died (Kohier, fo. 172, p. 40). A less likely possibility is that the buyer may have been Abraham Boermans who died before 12 December 1623 when Abraham Anthonisz. of R 20033 was named administrator of the goods coming to his three children by the Orphan Chamber. Abraham, married to Maria Pieters, was the brother of Adriaen Boermans (I ?) (WK 5073/513, fol. 16vo.)
