Buyerde Vroeden
Buyer FamilyVroede, (Francois de, Gillis de?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Francois de Vroede, from Oudenaerde, who was active in Amsterdam since 1588 (Gelderbloom, ZuidNederlandse kooplieden, p.317) or his son Gillis de Vroede, merchant, later broker, active in Amsterdam since 1602 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 63). Gillis de Vroede invested 1,200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 188). He was one of the buyers of balances and other spice-merchant equipment at the Pieter Mercijs sale of 25 February 1625 (WK 5073/957). On 17 March 1627, Francoijs de Vroede named his son Gillis de Vroede to represent him in all his current affairs (NA 661, fol. 122, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 15 May 1638, Hendrick Verburgh (of R 7658) acknowledged having received through the hands of Gillis de Vroede, for the account of Susanna de Maitre, the wife of Melchior Andriesz. living in Leyden, the sum of 553 f. 18 st. in full payment for 9 barrels of pastel (NA 867, fol. 156, Not. van Zwieten).

BuyerJacob Nieuwelandt
Buyer FamilyNieuwelandt (Nieulandt), Jacob
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a painter and art dealer, active in Amsterdam from 1593/94 to 1634 (Briels, De zuidnederlandse immigratie, pp. 83, 99, 105, 109, etc..) Born circa 1593, he was only about 13 years old in 1606 when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. He was then living in the Pijlsteeg (as at the time of his betrothal in 1616) in de ghulde knop (GAA 27/66 F212). He was named, as the son of Adriaen van Nieulandt I and of Gertrude Loyson, along with his brothers the painters Guilliam III and Adriaen van Nieulandt II, among the heirs of Adriana Nouts, widow of Guilliam van Niuewelandt I, whose inventory was drawn up in Antwerp on 29 August 1608 (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 1(1989), p. 190). On 13 January 1616, Jakob van Nieuweland, schilder, living in the Pijlsteech, 23 years old, assisted by his mother Truyken (Gertruyd) Loyson, was betrothed to Maria van Ray, living in the Nes, 24, assisted by her mother Maria de Hase (Oud Holland, vol. 3(1885), p. 235). Maria de Ray was the daughter of the cloth dealer Balthasar (de or van) Ray (or Raije), who died between 1598 and 1607 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). Maria de Hase (or Haes) was married to Thomas Bort (or Birdt). She seems to have been either a younger sister of Hendrick de Haze I (1550-1605) or his oldest daughter. On 14 January 1635, an inventory was taken at the request of her heirs of the goods belonging to Thomas Bort and his wife (whom he had apparently remarried after her death), which goods had been placed under arrest by the deurwaerder of the court, presumably on account of Bort's insolvency (INVNO 1011). On 12 November 1620, Jacob van Nieulandt and his wife Maria van Ray had their son Heinrick baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hendrick de Haes (de jonge) of R 28875, Thomas Bort, and Anna Ray (Oud Holland, ibid.) On 26 January 1623, they had their daughter Geertruyt baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jacob van Nuffelen, Catlyn Raes and Cornelia de Lookere (Oud Holland, ibid., p. 235). Jacomo van Nuffelen or van Uffelen was the second husband of Susanna van Haze, who was either the sister or the niece of Maria van Haes (or Haze). Catlyn Raes was the wife of Jacob van Nieulandt's brother Adriaen, who was himself a witness at the baptism of Jacob's son Pieter on 9 January 1628 (ibid.) On 20 December 1621, Jacob van Neulandt borrowed 600 f. from Jeronimus de Haze (or Haes) de oude of R 29604, to whom he was related via his mother-in-law Maria de Haes (Obreen, Archief voor Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis vol. 6, p. 49). In 1623, Jacob van Nieulandt was portrayed as a schutter in the Corporaalschap of Pieter Dircksz. Hasselaer, possibly by Cornelis van der Voort (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 354). On 7 April 1623, Jaques van der Lamen, painter (of INVNO 698), 39, living in Amsterdam, declared at the request of Jacob van Nyeulant, likewise painter, that about two years ago, he, the witness, together with Jan Baptista van Fornenburgh, likewise painter, and Gerrit Martsz. of Rotterdam, had been arbiter over the purchase of 24 paintings painted on double canvases. being all devotions (so called), that Guillame Wiitenbroot, art dealer in Antwerp, had sold to the producent (van Nieulandt) for 250 f., namely 150 f. in cash and 100 f. within a year (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 2174). On 24 May 1629, Cornelis de Vogel (the father of Jan de Vogel of R 26637), 60, and Jacob van Nieulandt, 34, declared at the request of Captain Michiel van de Sande (the painter) that they had been in Nieulandt's house and heard how Van de Sande proceeded in the purchase of a horse from Jeronimus de Fever. Van de Sande agreed to pay 410 f. for it to pay with paintings that would be assessed by those who understood these things. De Fever said he would give the pictures to Sr. Bisschop and would provide the canvases and bring them to Van Nieulandt's house. Jacob van Nieulandt testified that De Fever had never brought the canvases to his house (Bredius, op.cit. p. 1488). On 27 February 1630, Charles de Coninck, merchant in Middelburg, sold to Jacob van Nieulant a painting painted by mr. Louijs Vincen (Lodovicus Finsonius), after the original by Michel Angelo de Crawachij, representing the distribution of the Pater Noster to the preachers (de uitdeling van de Pater Noster to the predikheren) for 600 f., to be paid in 6 to 8 weeks, on condition that the authenticity of the painting be confirmed by Pieter Lastman, Adriaen Nieulant, and Franchoijs Venant, painters in Amsterdam (NA 371, fol. 30, not. W. Cluijt). Jacob van Nieulandt was buried on 27 December 1634, probably shortly after his wife (Bredius, Kunstler-inventare, p. 2176).

BuyerJacob Jansz. wijncooper
Buyer FamilyJansz., Jacob (wijncooper)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a wine merchant. He is likely to be identical with the individual of that name, said to be a wijncooper, who paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Raemsloot (Kohier, fol. 221 vo., p. 51). On 15 March 1633, the honorable Jacob Jansz. wine dealer, guardian over the children of the mapmaker Hessel Gerritsz., named the bookseller Gerrit Jansz. to collect debts due to the late Hessel Gerritsz. (NOTES to R 20968).

BuyerPouwelis Teerlingh
Buyer FamilyTeerlingh (Sterlingh ?), Pouwelis (Paulus)
Buyer NotesIt is likely that the name of the buyer was garbled from Sterlingh to Teerlingh. Paulus Sterling was a merchant and sugar refiner, born in Antwerp about 1564, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1602 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314). He was married to Elisabeth Coesaert II, the aunt of Laurens Coesaert III of R 33388, on 25 November 1616. He was one of the investors in the diking of the landen bij Hoogeboom cited in a deposition of 5 March 1619 (see the NOTES to R 21449 and R 33388). He was also a sugar refiner. On 5 August 1631, Claes Claesz. Listingh, Albert Bartelsz., Elias Cliston and Reynier van Buyren de jonge, for and on account of Jan Joriaensz., all four brandy wine distillers, agreed among themselves as to which sugar refiner should deliver form water (syrup?) to which brandy distiller. Jan Joriaensz. and Reynier van Buyren were to take delivery of form water from, and only from, the sugar refineries of (Jan)Thiebout on the Keysersgracht, Johan de l'Hommel on the Binnen Amstel, Paulus Sterlingh, Dirck van Brugge, Hans van Kessel, (Nicolaes) van Damme by the Gasthuys, and (Jan) van Velsteyn on Vloyenburch (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 771). On 8 January 1633, Jan Joriaensz. and Reynier van Buren de jonge dissolved their partnership. Van Buyren paid 1,200 f. compensation to Jan Joriaensz. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.1) On 8 February 1633, the honorable Paulus Sterlinx, sugar baker, declared that he had borrowed 6,000 f. from David de Weerd for the sake of the advancement of his business (nering). Jeremias and Laurens Coesaert (III) (his nephews by marriage) constituted themselves sureties for the loan (NA 595, fol. 11, Not. Lamberti). On these family relations, see the NOTES to R 33388. On 2 May 1633, Paulus Steerlinx, sugar baker, declared that he owed numerous debts to various persons, to secure which he was pledging all his movable goods, paintings, silver, and jewels (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 15). He apparently died shortly thereafter. On 10 May 1633, an inventory was taken of the goods found in the house of Paulus Sterlingh. The inventory's contents were very modest (NA 694B, fol. 26, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 10 March 1635, Elisabeth Cousaerts, widow of Paulus Sterlincx, assisted by the notary (Lambert Lamberti), named Willem van Ravesteyn, procuror, to represent her (NA 596, Not. Lamberti). On 24 May 1636, she transferred 57 f. to her sisters Catrijn and Maria Coesaerts, which she was owed from the inheritance of Samuel Verplancken (of R 21491) (NA 597, fol. 405, Not. Lamberti). Paulus Sterlincx II (apparently Paulus Sterlincx I's son), born about 1602, was noted in 1641 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base).

BuyerBicker de vaendrich
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be identical with Cornelis Bicker (1592-1654), merchant in the firm Cornelis Bicker, Rombout Jacobsz. en Compagnie, of R 8161. It is less likely that it was his brother Jacob, since the latter became a commissaris in 1614 and schepen 1616 and would have been likely to have been designated by one of these titles rather than vaendrich (flag bearer of a militia company) (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 174.) Cornelis Bicker was portrayed in a Schuttersstuck by J. van Sandrart and, in a separate portrait, by Govert Flinck in 1654 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, pp. 120-1). He became captain of the burgerij in 1634.

BuyerPieter Bos op den Dam
Buyer FamilyBos (Bosch), Pieter
Buyer NotesThe buyer is almost certainly identical with Pieter Pietersz. Bosch, originally from Antwerp, who is first noted in Amsterdam in 1604 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 296). On 30 November 1607, Pieter Pietersz. Bos, from Antwerp, 29 years old, assisted by his swager Jaques 't Kint, was betrothed to Lobbetje Abrahams Spiers, 18, assisted by her father Abraham Spiers and her mother Annetge Sevenhuysen (DTB 413/68). Jacques 't Kindt, a retail merchant and broker, originally from Antwerp, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1588 (Gelderblom, op.cit. p.305). He was the father of Abraham 't Kindt of R 32457. Jan Spiers of R 23553 was the brother of Lobbetje Spiers. It may be that the Abraham Spiers who married Agatha van Maerlen after the death of her first husband Hans van Solt de jonge (of R 21567) was another son of Abraham Spiers (de oude), the father of Lobbetje. In 1631, Pieter Pietersz. Bos, living on the Dam, paid a tax of 150 f. (corrected from 50 f.) (Kohier, fol. 264vo., p. 61). Pieter Bos op den Dam in de Olypot was a cruydenier (see the sale of leather in INVNO 819 of 15 April 1625). On 4 January 1639, Johannes (Jan) Spiers and Pieter Pietersz. Bos, respectively the son and son-in-law of Abraham Spiers, declared themselves sureties for the creditors of the estate of Abraham Spiers (see the INTRO of INVNO 611 in R 1061 of Montias1). Pieter Pietersz. Bosch was still alive in 1649 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base).

BuyerKerckhoven
Buyer FamilyKerckhoven (Daniel van ? I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Daniel van Kerckhoven (I), cloth merchant in Amsterdam. According to a deposition dated 21 December 1618, he was 40 years old, thus born about 1578. At that time, his co-deponents were Pieter Theunen, 55, and Marten Hooftman, 30, merchants. All three were curators of the estate of Cornelis Croon (I), the father of Neeltge Cornelis Croon, who married the glass engraver Jan Jansz. Fonteyn. The curators acknowledged a debt to Gullaume Bort (Bert, of R 31684) (NA 200, film 111). Earlier, in 1613, Carel du Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 20376) and Daniel van de Kerckhoven founded a company to trade with Russia. Du Moulin participated to the extent of 2/9 and Kerchoven, to the extent of 7/9. Kerckhoven shared his part with Abraham de Clerck (of R 27363) (E. Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1540, p. 267). On 11 February 1612, Daniel van den Kerckhoven (I), from Antwerp, living on the O.Z. Achterburgwal, was betrothed to Katharina Munninkx, from Nieupoort, living in Middelburg (DTB 763/3). On 7 March 1613, the couple had their son Johannis baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jeelis Munnik and Lysbet van de Kerckhoven (DTB 5/57). Jeelis (Gillis) Munnicx (II?), who owned a owned a house in Arkhangelsk with Albert van Breugel (cited in the TEXT of R 941 of Montias1) (about 1620?), may have been Gillis Munnicx's sister (Wijnroks, ibid. and p. 374). Daniel van Kerckhoven (I) freighted a ship to Dantzig on 17 May 1620 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), p.330.) On 20 June 1626, Abraham de Clerck (of R 27363) and Govert Gillisz., cloth dealer, were named by the Orphan Chamber as co-guardians over the children of Daniel van Kerckhoven (I), who must have died shortly beforehand (Wk 5073/513, fol. 44). On 17 August 1628, Abraham Anthonisz., in the name of Catharina Muenix, widow of Daniel van Kerckhoven (I), brought in some obligations to the Orphan Chamber for the benefit of Jan, 15 years old, Daniel (II), 11, Abraham, 9, Elisabeth, 7, Anna, 5, Catharina, 4, and Jacob, 2, procreated by Daniel van Kerckhoven (I) (WK 5073/789). In 1631, the widow of Daniel van Kerckhoven paid a tax of 200 f., at which time she lived near the Ramsloot on O.Z. (Kohier, fol. 217, p. 50). Daniel II, the son of Daniel van Kerckhoven I, was betrothed to Catharine van Amstenraat on 30 July 1643 (DTB 459/332). He was also a merchant who, according to a document of 22-24 September 1665, ordered gold and silver lace to be made for his commerce at least since 1643 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis vann het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 734). On Daniel van Kerckhoven II, see also the INTRO to INVNO 124, R 31 of Montias1).

BuyerAbraham de Clerck
Buyer FamilyClerck, Abraham de
Buyer NotesAbraham de Clerck was a merchant, originally from Antwerp, who is first noted in Amsterdam in 1599 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 297). He was born about 1581, the son of Jan de Clerck and of Margrita Hendricks Haelkens. His brother was named Isaack (cited below) (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, p. 267) On 27 August 1611, Abraham de Clerck, widower of (assisted by his mother) Margriet Haelkens, was betrothed to Elisabeth van der Kerckhoven, from Antwerp, 33 years old (DTB 415/463). According to Eric Wijnroks (ibid.). he was probably the brother-in-law of Daniel van Kerckhoven (of R 27358) with whom he shared a part in a joint trading company with Moscovy with Carel de Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 20376). He had an account of several folios at the Wisselbank between 1609 and 1615. He invested 600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 203). On 12 August 1606, he was consulted, together with four other money changers (wisselaers), on the maintenance and stability of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 8). On 12 March 1609, he freighted a ship for Riga for himself and on behalf of Albert Mertsen, wine dealer. In 1609, De Clerck freighted another ship, and two more in 1616 and 1617 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R,G.P., 185(1983), pp. 37 amd 387; 186(1983), p. 80). Albert Mertsen or Martsen, wine merchant, was the owner of the goods in INVNO 273 and INVNO 2730. Our buyer seems to be identical with Abraham de Clerck who signed (and possibly made a drawing, now lost, for) the Album Amicorum of the painter Wibrand Symonsz. de Geest in Aix en Provence on 20 June 1616 (Oud Holland 7(1889), p. 238.) Abraham de Clerck was one of the regents of the Spinhuis from 1625 to 1627 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 105). On 20 June 1626, he was named by the Orphan Chamber as guardian over the children left by Daniel van Kerckhoven (WK 5073/513, fol. 44). Abraham de Clerck's wife Elisabeth van Kerckhoven, who was probably Daniel van Kerckhoven's sister, was present at the baptism of a child of Daniel Kerckhoven (NOTES of R 27358). He died some time before 1631 (Wijnroks, op.cit. p. 267). In 1631, the widow of Abraham Leclercq had remarried with the Remonstrant Guillaume Lindeman. Guillaume or Willem Lindeman was the stepson of Do. Johannes Wtenbogaert, who created a furor when he assisted at the baptism of Lindeman's child, at which Do. Pieter Plancius officiated, and objected (after the service) to the formulation of the confession (doopvrag) (Evenhuis, Ook dat was Amsterdam, vol.1, Amsterdam, 1965, pp.234-5). Since Elisabeth van Kerckhoven was a member of the Reformed Church in good standing, this mixed marriage had led to some difficulties, which were overcome when she promised to win over her husband to the true faith (Calvinist) (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, pp. 190-1). On 23 December 1624, the honorable Guilliame Lindeman, merchant, at the behest of Henrick van Ashen, living in Bremen, engaged Jan Thomas, pinmaker, to work for three years in Bremen (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933) p. 558). The identity of Abraham de Clerck and Abraham Leclercq emerges from the act of 1633 cited below. On 21 April 1633, Guilliam Lindeman, 57, and Anthony van de Breham, 56, declared at the request of the heirs of Abraham de Clerck that Isaack de Clerck, the brother of Abraham de Clerck, had left 6 children, named Jan de Clerck, Abraham de Clerck, Catharina de Clerck (married to Jeuriaen Willemsz.), Grietge de Clerck (married to Hendrick Hendricksz.), Lysbet de Clerck (married to Christoffel van Tricht), and Mayken de Clerck (married to Eldert Tiaerts) but no other descendents. Both Isaack and Abraham de Clerck were now dead, and Elisabeth van Kerckhoven had remarried with Guillaume Lindeman (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 4 August 1619, the honorable Eduart Emtinck, 48, Guillaume Lindeman, 40, Otto Olthuysen, 40, David Gillisz., 34, all merchants, made a declaration at the request of Hans van Vogel, as uncle and holder of a power of attorney in the affair of Catherina Tentelaer (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 9 August 1635, Gullaume Lindeman and Jan van Hartochvelt, aelmoeseniers, declared that they had received out of the hands of Jan Jansz. and Arent Jansz. Uijl (the painter and his brother), as co-heirs of the wachdrager Aert Adriaensz., an obligation (rente brief) yieldng f. 13:12: 8 (NA 1184, Not. J. de Vos). (The wachdrager Aert Adriaensz. had been dead for some time. On 17 February 1617, Abraham Anthonisz. of R 20033 had been appointed guardian over his estate (WK 5073/513, fol. 159vo)). The inventory of Guillaem Lindemans, living near the Sleutelsbruch, was taken on 16 June 1643. It included the effigy of Joannes Wttenbogaert (his stepfather), on paper, and several images of the Virgin Mary, including a triptych (NA 414, film 1482, Not. F. Bruyningh).

BuyerClaes Jacobsz. Paets
Buyer FamilyPaets, Claes Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesClaes Jacobsz. Paets was the son of Jacob Pietersz. Paedts (of R 29579), book dealer in de Kerckstraet who invested 600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 123). He was apparently a minor on 12 December 1612 when Laurens Dubbelsworst (of R 27808) and Pieter Pietersz. Paedts were named guardians over the two children of Jacob Pietersz. Paedts (WK 5073/513). Pieter Pietersz. Paedts, engraver of coats-of-arms, was the son of Pieter Davidsz. Paedts and of Marretje Pieters. He was born about 1578 and lived in the Warmoesstraet in 1608 (Obreen, Archief 2(1878-1880), p. 167). Pieter Pietersz. Paets may also have been a painter (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.1781). The children under his guardianship were presumably Claes Jacobsz. and Pieter Jacobsz. who was still alive on 20 October 1627 when Lourens Dubbelworst again appeared on his behalf (WK 5073/789). The painter Pieter Davidsz. Paets, married to Maritge Pieters, was the father of Erckgen Pieters who was betrothed to the painter Teunis Claesz. (not identical with Anthony Claesz de Jonghe II) on July 9 1617 (Bok, letter of February 3, 2000). The children of Teunis Claesz. and Ercktge Pieters were cited in an act of 13 July 1638 (NA 1466, film 1556). Teunis Claesz. sold to Nicolaes Barghois paintings valued at f. 1,062, including 100 paintings made bv Mr. Franciscus and his knecht for f. 600 (Bredius, ibid.) Mr. Franciscus is likely to be Francesco Badens. Claes Jacobsz. Paedts, bookbinder, invested 200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C.shares. In 1617, he appeared as an appraiser of books and bookbinding equipment (Van Dillen, ibid.) He died shortly before 1 October 1620, when his widow Annetje Gerrits appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her four children (Gerrit, 4, Stijntgen, 3, Neeltgen, 2, and a child she was still carrying). She owned the house called the ABC in the Warmoesstraat (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968 37/20, p. 426). In 1631, the widow of Claes Jacobsz. Paets paid a tax of 45 f., at which time she lived on the Verwerstraet (as did Dirck Gerritsz., dyer, another buyer at this sale.) (Kohier, fol. 223, p. 51). On 16 June 1634, Pieter Davidsz., Salomon Pietersz. Reus (broker), Aeltgen Pieters and Erckge Pieters, wife of Anthony (Theunis) Claesz. painter, all heirs of Pieter Pietersz. Paets, item Cornelis Pietersz. Bolhamer as husband and guardian of Diewertgen Willems, Gerrit Cornelisz. Sloterdijck, and Pieter Gerritsz. Gent, as uncle and guardian of the children left by Cornelis Gerritsz. Sloterdijck, namely Cornelis and Jan Cornelisz. Sloterdijck, heirs of Griet Centen, wife of the late Pieter Pietersz. Paets, named Mr. Ghysbert Heeremans and Seger Pietersz. (of R 32330) to represent them (in settling the estate) (NA 595, fol. 535, Not. Lamberti). Pieter Davidsz., also cited below, was a goldsmith. Cornelis Pietersz. Bolhamer, lockmaker, was married to Jannetje Jans, and had two children, Franck, 7, and Grietgen, 1 1/2, according to an Orphan Chamber act of 14 November 1625 (WK 5073/549). On 19 August 1637, Salomon Pietersz. Reus (broker) declared at the request of Seger Pietersz. that his mother and sisters were heirs of Pieter Pietersz. Paets. The painter Simon Kick and Jasper Vinckel (II) signed the deposition (NA 991, fol. 56, Not. J. Bosch). On 24 December 1637, Salomon Pietersz. Reus, sworn broker, for himself and also as guardian of the children left by Teunis Claesz., painter, and Erickje Pieters, his wife, and Jacob Claessen, rope thrower (lijn slager), as also as guardian over the children of Pieter Davietssen, goldsmith, declared that they had leased (verhuert) and Abraham Sena had rented a house in the Warmoesstraet for 8 years for 1,600 f. a year (NA 952. Not. B. Baddel). Jacob Claessen was presumably Teunis Claesz.'s brother. On 28 January 1639, Stijntje Claes Paets, the daughter of Claes Jacobsz., assisted by her mother Annetje Gerrits, living opt Nieuwlandt, assisted by her mother Annetje Gerrits, was betrothed to Steven Jansz., 31 years old, assisted by his father Hans Gerritsz. van Goor, living on the Rooseboomsteeg (in de Pui). Steven Jansz. was the painter Steven van Goor, who had been the pupil for three years of Jan Symonsz. Pynas (On Van Goor's apprenticeship in Bredius, Künstler-inventare pp. 296-7 of the Nachträge). The architect and painter Jacob van Campen, who was said to be a cousin of the bride, was present at the signature of the contract (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.1243). On 17 October 1646, Srs. Gerrit Pietersz. (Zijl), 39, and Rombout Verhulst (sculptor), 21, and Willem Stryker (painter) declared that at the request of Steven van Goor that, on October 4th last, coming by the Lutheran Church, they had encountered the cousin or servant of Barthout Willemsz. (the soap boiler of that name, cited in the TEXT of R 432?). The producent (Van Goor) had asked Barthout in the hearing of the witnesses whether he was willing to sell the painting that had been stolen and was now hanging in Barthout's house op 't Spuije and whether he could deliver it in case the deal went through (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1244). The painter of Gerrit Pietersz. van Zijl would become the guardian of the children of the painter Jacob van Loo, by the latter's testament of 7 August 1660 (Oud Holland 34(1916), p. 50). On 6 July 1663, Styntge Paets, widow of Steven van Goor, was said to be co-owner with her children of a house situated on the St. Anthonys market between the Breestraet and the Dyckstraet, under the gable of St. Jacob (Bredius, op.cit. p.73 of the Nachträge).
