BuyerRem Thonisz. in de Fonteijn
Pre Lot HeaderOp den 12 november
Buyer FamilyThonisz., Rem (Fonteijn)
Buyer NotesRem (or Remmert or Remigius) Fonteyn (1577-1659) was the son of Thonis Jansz., apothecary in de fonteyn, the head of the Roman Catholic branch of the Fonteyn family. He was also an apothecary. When he married Balich Geenen (1582-1647) in 1609, the prenuptial contract specified that he would live in his house on the Dam and that he would utilize the garden in the Margrietenpad for his winkel (as a source of medicinal herbs). Balich Geenen was the granddaughter of the old R.C. bourgomaster Joost Buyck (Maandblad Amstelodamum 75(1988), p. 51). He also owned a miniature garden on the Plempenpad (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 55(1963), p. 83.) He paid a tax of 130 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Vismarkt (presumably still his house on the Dam) (Kohier, fol. 207, p. 47). On 11 August 1636, Rem Fonteyn, apothecary, 59, Cornelis Fonteyn, alias Plemp, 57, and Dr. Barent (Bernard) Fonteyn, 33, declared at the request of Pieter Cornelisz. Heussen, from Weesp, that the wife of the requirant (Heussen) was the only child of the late Josintge Claes Plemp, who was the second daughter of Lijsbet Arents van den Broec, procreated by Dr. Claes Plemp, their grandfather and greatgrandfather resp., and that Lijsbet Arents van den Broec was a daughter of Arent van den Broec and of Joosge van Duijffhuijs in Den Bosch. The witnesses assert that they are the children and grandchildren of Belysje Claes Plemp, the sister of Joosge Claes Plemp (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). In 1642, Rem Anthonisz. Fonteyn bought a house on the Oude Teertuynen from Nicolas Pathuys (of INVNO 379), which had been sold by executive order. Pathuys, like Rem Fonteyn, was R.C. (Maandblad Amstelodamum loc. cit.) Rem Fonteijn was the brother of Dr. Johan Fonteyn, (of R 7647), whose two sons were Dr. Nicolaes Fonteyn (of R 19445) and Dr. Bernard Fonteyn (1603-1645), cited in the above deposition. According to Dudok van Heel, Rem Fonteyn was the most important and respected apothecary of his time (Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, Amsterdam, 1998, p. 58).

BuyerSeverijn aen den Oude Kerck schilder
Buyer FamilySeverijn [schilder]
Buyer NotesBriels (Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 286) suggested the buyer was Roelandt Savery. This is plausible, in view of the fact that the clerk recording the auction called Salomon Savery Salomon Severinus (R 27405), but it is by no means certain. Note also the painting attributed to Severijn of R 17973.

Buyer NotesThe buyer was perhaps related to Jan Banninck, apotheker, who paid a tax of 3 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, fol. 26) and to Cornelis Banninck who was schepen in 1590 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 480).

BuyerHans van Cleef
Buyer FamilyCleef, Hans van
Buyer NotesThe buyer, who was a painter, an art dealer, and restorer, was born in Antwerp about 1570. He may have been the son of the landscape painter Henrick van Cleve (Vette Heyn ?) He originally settled in Leiden where he is cited in 1605 as a an art dealer and in 1606 as a restorer of paintings. He is noted in Amsterdam from 1608 on (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 310). On 6 August 1609, Barent van Someren, 37 years old (of R 20424), and Hans van Cleef, about 39, citizens of Amsterdam, declared at the request of Pieter Jansz. Molijn that they had been present when Harman Rutgers had received 84 pounds of tobacco from Molijn for safekeeping (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 802). Pieter Jansz. Molijn (or du Moulin) was the brother of Carel Jansz. du Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 20376, 27358, and 27363). On the two brothers, originally from Brugge, who were active in trade with Moscovy, see Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.269 and passim. On 6 February 1610, Hans van Cleeff (signs Cleve), from Antwerp, schilder, widower of Maaike de Flier, living on the Achterburchwal, next to the Bouwen Spijcker, was betrothed to Elisabeth Schrijvers, from Antwerp, widow of Hans Michielsz. (DTB 666/215). On 6 August 1615, Hans van Kleeff, schilder, and Lijsbet Schrijvers had their daughter Passchijn baptized in the presence of Pieter Molijn and Syntjen Henricxdr. (DTB 4/299). Pieter Molijn is probably identical with Pieter Jansz. Molijn cited above and not with Pieter Pietersz. de Molijn, the Haarlem painter. Elisabeth Schrijvers had been a widow one year when she remarried with Jan ter Weijden on 8 December 1617 (DTB 422/85). It is probable that Hans van Cleef was also an art dealer.

BuyerPieter le Fevre
Buyer FamilyFevre, Pieter le (I)
Buyer NotesOn 23 October 1616, Pieter le Febure and his wife Catrijna Lemaijre had their son Abraham baptized in the presence of Hans le Maijre (Catrijna's father) and Elijsabeth Charette (DTB 5/198). (On Hans le Maire, who was also a buyer at auction, see R 20171 of Montias2). On 11 January 1618, Pieter le Febvre, from Doornik, widower of Catharina le Mair, living in the Calverstraet, was betrothed to Nicole Wimer, widow of Niclaes Hespel (the father of Samuel Hespel of R 25237). Pieter le Fevre came to Amsterdam around 1576. He was an apothecary, dealing in perfume and tobacco, and was also a goudraadtrecker (he made gold thread and chains) (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 187 and R 34171). In 1631, he paid a tax of 30 f., living on the West side of the Calverstraet (Kohier, fol. 271vo., p. 62). He died in 1637 (see INVNO 643, R 542 of Montias1). He was the brother of Jacques le Fevre of R 27452. He was the father of Pieter le Febure de jonge, likewise goldthread-maker, baptized on 30 September 1608, who brought 650 f. to the Orphan Chamber on 2 July 1633 for the inheritance of his son Pieter, 8 weeks old, whose late mother was Sara Pieters Bril (WK 5073/789). Pieter le Febvre II died in 1636.

BuyerJan Cornelisz. Vis
Buyer FamilyVis, Jan Cornelisz.
Buyer NotesIn 1604, Jan Kornelis Vis was a shooter in the Company of Jan Jansz. Carel, whose group portrait was painted by Gerrit Pietersz. in that year (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 309). Jan Cornelis Visch was taxed 125 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 146vo., p. 34). On 19/20 September 1645, an inventory was taken of the possessions of the late Lysbetgen Alberts, widow of Jan Cornelisz. Vis. (GAA, NA 907, film 1144, INVNO 1221). From the crucifix over the bedstead, it may be inferred that Lysbetge Alberts was Roman Catholic, as perhaps was her husband. An individual named Cornelis Vis, who may be Jan Cornelis Vis's son,, was a member of the Rederijkerskamer in lieffde bloyende. On 2 July 1638, Cornelis Vis, merchant, insinuated Sr. Marten Looten (II) regarding an overdue letter of exchange for 3,850 f. (NA 1466, film 1556). On 14 February 1641, sr. Cornelis Vis, merchant, was insinuated by Jan Harlaer for failing to take take delivery and paying for 50 vats of Bordeaux wine (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp.294-6). Jan Cornelisz. Vis should not be confused with Jan Cornelisz. Visscher I, married to Anna Jacobs, who died before 1625, or with Jan Cornelisz. Visscher II (1610-1650), portrayed by Rembrandt in the Nightwatch, who was still a bachelor when he died in 1650.

BuyerWillem Benningh notaris
Buyer FamilyBenningh, Willem (Jansz.)
Buyer NotesWillem Jansz. Benningh was the son of Jan Benningh Claesz., born in 1563, and of Lijsbeth Lamberts Coppens. His sister Wijbrich Jans Benningh, born in 1592, married the drogist Balthasar Jansz. of R 20078. On 25 October 1619, Willem Benningh and Maritje van Tonningvliet had their son Mathijs baptized in the presence of Clara Willems (DTB 39/200). He was a well-known notary. On 18 March 1620, Hendrick Jacobsz., city carpenter (buyer of R 27495) and Cornelis Danckerts, city mason, made a declaration at the request of Willem Jansz. Benningh concerning the expansion of Amsterdam via piles in the port (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 78(1933), p. 357). Willem Benning may also have been an art dealer. On 29 May 1614, he appeared before another notary in Amsterdam, in the company of the painters Hans Rem and Jacob van Nieulandt, to lodge a complaint (insinuatie) against Jean van Bronchorst, to whom he had sold paintings, which Bronchorst considered not to be by the masters to whom they were attributed and which he apparently refused to pay. In February 1615, Benning sold 29 paintings for f. 2636 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, vol. VI, pp. 2172-3.)

BuyerIsaack [crossed out: Hans] Solemans
Buyer FamilySolemans (Sollemans, Soolmans, Sonnemans), Isaack (Martensz.)
Buyer NotesOn 21 December 1613, Isaak Soolmans, 27, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his father Marten Soolmans (I) was betrothed to Maria van Beringhen, 26, also living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by her mother Maria van Kockereel (DTB 417/295). Maria van Beringen was the daughter of Thielman van Beringen and of Maria van Wickevoort. On 21 September 1619, Maria van Wickevoort, widow of Thielman van Beringen, named her daughter Maria van Beringen, wife of Isaack Solmans, to collect from Claes Jansz. Coning, living in Deventer, the sum he owed her (NA 381, fol. 87, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) Marten Soolmans I fled Antwerp in or about 1585 to settle in the Dutch Republic (De Navorscher 53(1903), pp.466-7). Marten Sollemans I, living in the Warmoesstraet in the house with the sign of Jesus, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (4/11 F25). He seems to have been a brother of the sugar refiner Jan Soolmans (1560-1620). On 12 March 1613, Jan Soolmans and his second wife Willemke Zael had their son Marten (II) baptized in the N.K. (Maandblad Amstelodamum 43(1956), p.88). Marten Soolmans II registered as a student at Leiden University but did not matriculate. He was portrayed by Rembrandt in 1634. He must not be confused with Marten Soolmans III who was baptized on 27 September 1615, as the son of Isaack Soolmans and of Marija van Beringen, in the presence of Marten Solmans I (DTB 5/157). Marten Soolmans II married Oopjen Coppit on 9 June 1633 and died in 1641 (ibid.) Oopjen remarried with Captain Marten Pietersz. Daij, who died before 3 November 1659 when his inventory was taken (INVNO 974). Catharina Soolmans, the sister of Marten (Jansz.) Soolmans II, born in 1611, married Gregorius van den Broeck (of R 30845). Abraham Martensz. Soolmans (of R 27420), the brother of Isaack Martensz., married Sara Drumez. On 16 July 1616, Isacq Solemans protested the non-payment of a letter of exchange on behalf of Jacob Poppen, who was perhaps his employer, as koopmansdienaer (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 185(1983), p. 579). On Jacob Poppen of INVNO 292, see the TEXT of R 209 of Montias1. Isack Sollemans paid a tax of 75 f. in 1631, at which time he lived op 't Water (Kohier, fol. 24 vo., p. 7.) His house, called De Lieve Vrouw (R 27468), was once owned by the merchant Pieter van de Venne (de oude), from Antwerp (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 397).In 1638, he lived on the corner of the Vrousteech (R 26416). In 1646, Isaack Soolmans was a master of the O.Z. Kapell (Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 127). In 1644, Isaack Soolmans and several other cloth merchants signed a petition calling for regulation of the value of the gulden (about which there was confusion) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 431-2). The drapier Thieleman Soolmans, born in 1620, son of Isaack Soolmans, married Catharina Schuyt, daughter of Arnout Schuyt, who in turn was the son of Arend Gijsbertsz. Schuyt, the brother or Albert Schuyt of R 28923, on 19 May 1654 (Elias, op. cit., p. 1018). For a partial reconstruction of the Soolmans family, see Schwartz, Rembrandt, p. 135.

Buyer NotesOn 30 April 1593, Maerten Claesz. Calff was betrothed to Aefgen Gijsbertsdr. (van der Poll) (DTB 406/338). He died on 14 April 1617, she, on 26 November 1593 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 135). He was the son of Claes Pietersz. Calff who owned a ropemaking establishment op de Lastage. Claes Pietersz. Calff was married to Adriaentge Claes, who remarried after his death with captain Baerent Hendricksz. Schaef of INVNO 149 (R 65 of Montias1). Maerten Claesz. invested 1800 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 168). He was a merchant on the Boomsloot in de Vergulde Kalf (hence his family name). He was born in 1560. Maerten's only daughter Jannetge, born in 1597, married Jan Reynier Claesz. alias Jan Reyniersz. on 13 September 1615 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 18). In 1635, already as a widow, she lived on the north-west corner of the St. Anthoniesluis. She may have rented rooms to Rembrandt after he and his wife Saskia moved out of Hendrick Uylenburgh's house. Jannetge Martens was the sister-in-law of Pieter Thijsz. Schrijver, the father of Philips Thijsz. of R 30694 (Schwartz, Rembrandt, pp. 189-190).

BuyerSalomon Pietersz.
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Salomon
Buyer NotesSalomon Pietersz., living on the Rockin in De schilders hant, bought a lot for 6 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA 95/17 F 714). On 4 April 1620, Salomon Pietersz. had some paintings sold by the Orphan Chamber (INVNO 886). The name of his house De schilders hant in 1606, together with this sale of paintings, suggests he may have been an art dealer. He is likely to be identical with Salomon de Schilder who also had paintings sold at the house of Jan Dircksz. van Beuningen (in August 1620) (R 772 of Montias1). He seems to have been the brother-in-law of the painter of Adriaen Geurtsz. Bogaert of R 27404. He and his brother Pieter Pietersz. assisted his sister Geertgen Pieters on the occasion of her betrothal to Adriaen Geurtsz. on 25 January 1615 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 2033). He was first married to Maijke Jans. On 22 March 1631, Salomon Pietersz., painter, widower of Maijke Jans, was betrothed to Trijntje Hendrix (DTB 437/124). On 10 November 1631, Salomon Pietersz., innkeeper outside the city (herbergier buiten de stad), gave a procuration to his wife Trijntgen Hendricks to collect from Samuel Beijer in Rotterdam 9 f. 9 st. for two bancketschilderijen (still life paintings) that belonged to him (Salomon Pietersz.) (NA 1039, fol.23, Not. J. v. d. Ven, extracten). He died before 19 November 1639 when Trijntje Hendricks, widow of Salomon Pietersz., was betrothed to Julius Andriessen (NA 93, fol. 181vo, Not. B.J. Verbeeck).

BuyerPieter van Balen
Buyer FamilyBalen, Pieter van (II?)
Buyer NotesOn 10 March 1606, Pieter van Balen, from Antwerp, wine distributor (wijnverlater), 23 years old, assisted by his father Pieter van Balen, living outside the Zijpoort, was betrothed to Janneken Jansdr., living on the St. Pieterskerckhoff, assisted by her sister Duyfge Jans. Both were literate (DTB 411/688). On Janneke Jansdr., later called Janneken van Balen, see the NOTES to R 36691. The date of death of Pieter van Balen I is not known. Pieter van Balen II later became a wine merchant. On January 15, 1621, Pieter van Balen (probably II) asked a broker to make a deposition concerning the making of some bolts of cloth (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 388.) Pieter van Balen (probably II) was buried, coming from the Herengracht, on 6 April 1621 (DTB 1044/65vo). On 26 March 1622, Jannetje van Balen, widow of Pieter van Balen (II), was betrothed to Pieter Pietersen (DTB 427/61). Jannetje Jans was also a buyer at WK auction (R 36691). On 20 September 1628, the wine dealer Ambrosius Jansz. (of INVNO 905) brought 325 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of the children of the wine dealer Pieter van Balen (WK 5073/789). Jannetje Jans remarried with Hendrick van Salinge, who apparently survived her. Her death inventory, which contained a fair number of works of art (all unattributed), is dated 2 September 1630, That this was the the inventory of the former widow of Pieter van Balen II follows from the mention therein of a portrait of Pieter Pietersz. next to one of Janneken van Balen (NA 693B, Not. J. Warnaerts). The buyer was almost certainly Pieter van Balen II.

BuyerAbraham Solemans [crossed out: de weduwe van Anthony Boonhoff]
Buyer FamilySolemans (Soolmans), Abraham
Buyer NotesOn 20 March 1613, Abraham Soolmans (signs Sooelmans) Martensz., from Antwerp, 29 years old, living on the Warmoestraet (for 25 years), assisted by his father Marten Soolmans (I), was betrothed to Sara Drumez, also from Antwerp, 21, living in the Kalverstraet, assisted by her mother Barber Dragon (DTB 417/58). Marten Soolmans (I) had bought his house on the Warmoesstraat (no.107) de Naam Jesus from Johannes Kuchlinus on 16 June 1590 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, p. 35/28). Barber Dragon, the daughter of the merchant Walraven Dragon, was betrothed to Charles de la Croix, from Rijssel, on 25 March 1589. She was then living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal (DTB 405/67). Walraven Dragon was born in Antwerp about 1541 and died in Amsterdam between 1599 and 1610 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). In 1631, living on the West side of the Heeregracht, Barbara Dragon, living on the West side of the Heregracht, paid a tax of 50 f. (Kohier, fol. 87, p. 21). She was also the mother of Marie Drumez who married Jan Klocker (of R 33017) in February 1619. On 25 April 1612, Barbe Dragon, widow of Charles de la Croix, passed her testament. She left the poor of the Walse Community 150 f. and 100 f. to her godson Jacques de la Greve (proabably identical with Jacob Greven, the father of Abraham Jacobsz. Greven of INVNO 884). Her universal heirs were her children, named Jean, Sara, and Marie. The executors were Jacques and Abraham Dragon, Toussain Blanche (of INVNO 1191), her brother-in-law, and Jacques Six, her nephew. The act was drafted in the French language (NA 14, fol. 9, Not. S. Henrix, Extracten). On 23 December 1628, Abraham Soolmans, widower of Sara Bruijns (sic, an error for Drumez?), was betrothed to Elisabeth Bruggen (DTB 433/346). On 26 November 1630, Abraham Soolmans appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his son Abraham, 9, procreated by the late Sara de Rumez, was entitled to 6,000 f. for his mother's inheritance. On 30 October 1635, Jacob Willemsz., letter carrier (bode) of the city of Hamburg, 44, declared at the request of Abraham Solimans (Soolmans) that he had delivered a letter in the hands of Hendrick van Zeijl, exploiteur van den Hove van Hollant (NA 695A, film 4981). On 16 January 1644, Abraham Solmans offered for sale a house on the Warmoesstraet (bought by his father Marten Soolmans in 1590), on the corner of the Soetenaem Jesussteech. It was supposed to be bought by Jacob Jelis Kuyper, lace worker in the Angelierstraet, for 20,800 f., but the deal did not go through, and it was sold to Abraham's brother Isaack in 1647 The house contained gold leather hangings in the back room, which the children of the seller were allowed to keep (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 35/28). On 24 June 1649, Abraham Soolmans de jonge appeared before the Orphan Chamber with his father Abraham Soolmans de oude (WK 5073/789). Abraham Soolmans (I) paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 143 vo., p. 33). In 1652, an individual of that name was said to be a goldleather maker (goudleermacker), who is likely to have been his son, Abraham Soolmans de jonge (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 552). Abraham Soolmans (I) was the brother of Isaack Solemans of R 27398 and of Marten Soolmans III, and the cousin of Marten Soolmans II (whose portrait was painted by Rembrandt). Gregorius van den Broeck of R 30845 was his cousin by marriage. The buyer whose name was crossed out was Marijtje Sijbrants, the widow of Anthony Boonhoff (of INVNO 686).

Buyeridem [Jan de Marees in de Witte Voet op t Melck Marckt]
Buyer FamilyMarees, Jan de (I)
Buyer NotesThe Witte Voet was situated on the Nieuwen Dijck, between the Haarlemmerspoort and the Haarlemmersluijs. The genealogy of the De Marees (Marez) family is extremely complicated. One branch, to which the buyer of this lot is thought to belong, stemmed from Jan de Marez, born in 1517/18, who was married to Jenne van Achterhoudt. They had a son named Jan or Hans, whom I will call Jan Jansz. de Marez I. He is probably the individual of that name who spent some time in Emden before settling in Amsterdam where he is first noted in 1606 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 308). He married Susanna van Haucourt on 25 October 1618. On Jan de Marees de oude and de jonge and the De Marees family in general, see Wapenheraut 2(1898), pp. 32-40 and pp. 61-62. Jan Jansz. de Marees I, was the brother of Abraham de Marees Jansz., a very rich merchant who died in Amsterdam in 1631 (see also below). The eersame Jan de Marees (I) was named as the guardian of the children of his brother Abraham in an inventory dated 1 to 5 January 1636 (NA 563). He (or possibly his son of the same name) was living on the Nieuwen Dijck on 15 September 1630 when one of his children was buried (DTB 1062/23). It was probably Jan Jansz. de Marees, under the name Johan de Marees, who, together with a number of merchants, including Jan Danielsz. de Marez, signed a petition in 1643 calling for the stabilization of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 84). Note that Jan de Marees, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, is almost certainly not identical with Jan Symonsz. de Mareez (of R 23332) who lived in the Keisersgracht at least since 1626 and still lived there when he died in 1630 (DTB 1130/35). In a rich, anonymous inventory dated 27 May 1632, portraits of both Jan de Marees and his son Jan (presumed to be our buyer) were cited (NA 563A, fol. 78). This anonymous collector may be Abraham de Marees (Jansz.) (who had died the previous year), born in Antwerp about 1557, whose collection was mentioned by Carel van Mander (Bok, Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat., p. 157). Abraham de Marees also had a son named Jan who is sometimes referred to as Jan Abrahamsz. de Marees (or Marez) and sometimes as Jan de Marez. The following document may refer to Jan Jansz. or to Jan Abrahamsz. de Marees. On 15 May 1638, Jan de Marees, merchant, declared that two little barrels of cochenilla masteca (used in paints) had been sent from Seville by srs. Daniel de Laen and Pedro de Marines, merchants in Seville, to Douvres (Dover) at their own risk to Jacques Tasse and Franco Versluijs (?). The shipment had been arrested by David Hansen (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). Finally, Jan (Jansz.) de Marees (I) gave a procuration on 12 June 1638 to his cousin Abraham de Marees Abrahamsz. to collect money in Purmerende (ibid.) Until Jan de Marees's address on the Milk Market has been resolved, the question of which of the cousins was the buyer at W.K. sales will not be settled.

Buyer FamilyBronckhorst, Lubbert van
Buyer NotesThe buyer lived bij de Kolcksbrugh (R 27463). On 28 August 1621, Lubbert van Bronckhorst, from Haarlem, 21, assisted by his father Jan van Bronckhorst, living in de 3 Coningen, was betrothed to Jacobmyntje Coninghs, from Embden, 28, assisted by her mother Grietje Boudewijns. She was illiterate. (DTB 426/84). If this identification is correct, the buyer was at most 14 years old when he bought this lot (the age at which a boy could become a witness in a notarial document). Jan van Bronckhorst, the father of Lubbert, is likely to be identical with the individual of that name who was said to be a sworn broker and 45 years old on 30 June 1618 (NA 362, fol. 361vo.)

BuyerUytenbogaert
Buyer FamilyUytenbogaert (Wtenbogaert) (Augustijn ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Augustijn Wttenbogaert, born in Utrecht in 1577, died in Amsterdam in 1655. He was the son of Frans Gerritsz. Wtenbogaert and Maria van Sempeke He was Pagadoor or paymaster of the vendels krijgsknechten in 1618. He married Maria Reael (1580-1617), the sister of Pieter Reael of R 28042 and the daughter of Jan Pietersz. Reael and of Hillegond Reyniers van Neck on 31 December 1601. The young couple received various pieces of land from Evans Gerritsz. Bogaert for their marriage (NA 11, fol. 75, Not. S. Henrix, Extracten). In 1601, Augustijn was living in den diamant on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, in 1605 in the house of his father-in-law Jan Pietersz. Reael de silvere Reael, who invested 900 f. for his son-in-law Augustijn uijt den Bogaert (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 129). Augustijn, after the death of Maria Reael, which took place on 1 October 1617, remarried with Geertruijd Geldsack (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 261). In 1627, Augustijn Wttenbogaert was a regent of the Leprozenhuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 316). In 1629, he was portrayed by Ferdinand Bol with three other regents of the Leprozenhuis (Jan van Hartochveld, Jacob Willemsz. Hooft, and Pieter Cleuterijn) (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, 1975/1979, p. 50). Three out of four of these regents were Remonstrants. One of them, Jan van Hartochvelt, may have been R.C. On Jan van Hartochveld, see the NOTES to R 23415, on Jacob Willemsz. Hooft, the NOTES to R 31991, and on Pieter Cleuterijn, the NOTES to R 28161). In 1631, Augustijn Vijten Bogaert, living on the Raemsloot, paid a tax of 200 f. (Kohier, fol. 218, p. 50). Augustijn Wttenbogaert's daughter Maria married Jacob Barendsz. van Neck of INVNO 1256. His other daughter Hillegonda married Albert Dircx Pater (cited in the NOTES to R 7702). His son Johannes Uytenbogaert of R 33328, who was born in 1609, cannot be the buyer of this lot.

BuyerNicolaes Sohier
Buyer FamilySohier, Nicolaes
Buyer NotesSome time in the 1620s, the huis met de hoofden on the Keisersgracht (no. 123), next to the Remonstrant Church (built in 1631), was built for Nicolas Sohier (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 55). On 23 April 1623, Nicholas Sohier, from Cologne, 32 years old, with no living parents, assisted by his neve Carel de Latfeur, living on the Couleuvriersgracht, was betrothed to Susanna Hellemans, widow of Edward van Zurich (Surck), living on the Breestraet (she had been a widow two years). She was assisted by Susanna (Jaspers) van Zurck (Surck) (DTB 426/44). Carel (or Charles) de Latfeur (of R 20471) was the son of Maria Sohier and of Jan de Latfeur. When Nicholas Sohier and Susanna Hellemans had their daughter Felitia baptized on 13 November 1622, the witnesses were Susanna van Surck and Samuel Becker (of R 20466) (DTB 6/32). Susanna van Surck, the sister of Anthonie van Surck of INVNO 541, was the wife of Aernout Holmans (alias Hellemans, the father of Susanna Hellemans), who died before 4 January 1629, when Guillame Bartollotti (I) and Carel Zvyhen (?) presented themselves to the Orphan Chamber as administrators of the estate of Susanna van Surck, widow of Aernout Holmans, and brought in 5,000 f. on her behalf (WK 5073/789). On Guillemo Bartholotti I and II, see NA 843, procuration by Margarita Thibaut dated 22 September 1636). The inventory of Susanna van Surck, widow of Aernout Hellemans, was taken on 29 December 1628 (NA 568, fol. 218-226, INVNO 1141). Susanna Hellemans was also the sister of Leonora Hellemans, the wife of 1) Jan Baptista Bertolotti, a very wealthy merchant who died in 1624, and 2) Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft (1581-1647), the famous droost van Muijden, poet and historian (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 387). On 27 August 1625, Nicolas Sohier and his wife had their daughter Olympia baptized in the Wa. K. in the presence of Consalvo Romiti en la place de Pierre Auboind(?) Romitij et Leonora Hellemans (DTB 130/194). Gonsalvo (or Consalvo) Romiti was a merchant and an occasional art dealer (who is known to have dealt in the paintings of Hercules Seghers) (see R 23401). He was born in Italy, lived in Antwerp, and was living in Cologne when Geraerd Reynst invested 2,700 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares on his behalf in 1602. He was living in Amsterdam by 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 140). For the death inventory of his widow Magdelena Heldewier, see INVNO 302. His daughter Margerite Gonsalves was married to Carel Hellemans, widower of Catherina Jaspers Quingett (Hellemans was betrothed to Catherina Quingett on 4 October 1613, DTB 667/98). Charles Hellemans and Margerite Consalves had their son Pierre baptized in the Wa. K. on 7 August 1620 in the presence of Jean delle Bertolotty (the husband of Leonora Hellemans) and of Susanne Hellemans (the wife of Nicolas Sohier) (DTB 130/104)). In March 1637 (the exact date unknown, due to fire damage of the document), Jan de Raet, 42, merchant (of R 25452) and Sebastien Pittavin, 60 (of INVNO 552) declared at the request of Nicolaes Sohier, also merchant, that Susanna Hellemans, the wife of the requirant (Sohier) was the legitimate daughter of Arnout Hellemans, whose brother was the late Pedro Hellemans, and that Constantia Sohier, 12 years old, was her legitimate daughter. The act was apparently drawn up because Sohier had the intention to remarry (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). The house of Nicolaes Sohier, Het Vingboonhuis, on the Herengracht (to which he presumably moved from the Keisersgracht, where he was still living in 1631), was known for its works of art and its distinguished music making. Constantijn Huygens in his autobiography (1629-1631) described a painting by Rubens and Frans Snyders of the head of Medusa which he had seen in the collection of his friend Nicolaes Sohier in Amsterdam (S.A. Worp, Constantijn Huygens over de schilders van zijn tijd Oud Holland 9(1891), p. 121.) This is the painting of R 5355 (een meduse van Rubens en Snyders). In 1638, Constantijn Huygens consulted Nicolaes Sohier about composers [from Venice] who were now in fashion (J.H. Giskes, Venetiaanse muziek in zeventiende-eeuws Amsterdam in Amsterdam: Venetien van het Noorden Exh. Cat. 1991 (p.182)). Sohier contributed a sonnet in Italian and signed the Album Amicorum of the fencing master Gerard Thibault on 6 December 1615. Thibault may have been his fencing master (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977), p. 53). Sohier, qua merchant, was associated in a company with Jacob Bicker Jacobsz. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 359). Jacob Bicker, a rich merchant who married Aeff Roelofs, the daughter of Roelof Egbertsz., signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. Sohier paid a tax of 1200 f. in 1631, at which time he was still living on the Keijsersgracht (Kohier, fol. 187, p.43). Sohier died in 1642. For his death inventory of 1642, see INVNO 232. The present lot is likely to be the blompotje van Boschart (R 5337) in INVNO 232. The price is high enough to attribute the painting to Ambrosius Bosschaert I.

Buyer NotesOn 7 February 1609, Jacob le Febure, from Antwerp, [goutraad ?]trecker, 23 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet (4 years), assisted by his brother Pieter le Febre, was betrothed to Anneken de Wolff, 18, living on the Zeedijck, assisted by Frederick Mathijsz. de Wolf, her father (DTB 413/375). Frederick Mathijsz. (or Matheusz.) died before 29 October 1614 when the goods of his widow were sold at WK auction (INVNO 692). On 22 February 1611, Jacob le Feber and Anneken de Wolf had their daughter Barber baptized in the presence of Pieter le Feber (probably I) and Baijken van de Sporten (DTB 4/342). In 1612, Jacob le Febure delivered various gold or silver objects (een hondeken, vogeltiens, etc..) for the States General's gift to the Sultan in Constantinople. In N. de Roever's article on the princely gift. he is identified with Jacob le Febure who was betrothed in 1609 (Oud Holland 1(1883), p. 186). On 16 July 1614, Jacob le Febure, retail merchant, was paid 1 f. 1 st. for gloves for Brother Hans (Hans Thijsz. de jonge of R 27698) (Arch. Thys, Library of University of Leyden, no. 112A). After this lot, the following line was crossed out: no. 64 een bancquet idem [Jacques le Fevre] f 73:--:--. It is remarkable that when the insolvent inventory of Jacques le Febure, who may or may not be identical with the buyer of this lot, was taken in 1657, the only works of art it contained was 12 print bortjes (DBK 5072/365, fol. 21).

BuyerPauwels Bosschaert pasteybacker
Buyer FamilyBosschaert, Pauwels (Paulus) (Woutersz.)
Buyer NotesPaulus Bosschaert, pastry baker, was betrothed to Sijmontje Jans on 20 September 1608. He was said to be from Gent, 24 years old. He was assisted by his brother Lieven Bosschaert. Sijmontje Jans was 21 and illiterate (DTB 413/275). He was the son of Wouter Bosschaert and the brother of Anna Bosschaert Wouters (of R 27688), the wife of Jacques Boon, who passed her testament (citing these family relations) on 16 November 1624 (NA 434, fol. 131vo, Not. P. Matthijsz., Extracten). Paulus Bosschaert and Sijmontje Jans had several children baptized between 1609 and 1627. On 6 December 1609, Trijntje was baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Cornelis Jansz., cooper, cited below. His family name, cited below, may have been Worren. He seems to have been the brother of Sijmontje Jans and Bosschaert's brother-in-law (DTB 39/204). On 22 October 1615, Thuentje was baptized in the presence of Annetje Evers and Reymerig Gerritsdr. in the O.K. (DTB 5/160). On 11 February 1621, Pieter was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Susanna van Lavelle and Cornelis Jansz. Wooren (?) (DTB 5/344). On 16 February 1627, Josijntje was baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Sijmon Sijmonsz. (DTB 40/383). On 9 September 1625, Annetge Goverts, assisted by her brother-in-law Pauwels (Hendricksz.) Bosschaert, presented her four children to the Orphan Chamber. The father of the children was the cooper Cornelis Jansz. (WK 5073/789). The cake baker probably died before 1631, when his widow, living in on the West side of the Nes, paid a tax of 15 f. (Kohier fol. 235, p. 54). In September 1637, Symetie Jans, widow of Paulus Bosschaert, pasteijbacker, living in the Nes int Varcken, passed her testament. She had a store (winckel) which she left to her next oldest daughter Trijntje. She left Paulus Bosschaert (II), the son of Jan Jansz., who was married to her daughter Trijntje 50 f. She excluded the Orphan Chamber from handling the estate (NA 751, film 5178, fol. 589-590). 1014, fol. 406). Paulus Bosschaert II who married Elisabeth de Nimay, the daughter of Samuel de Nimay (R 23590), was also a pastry baker. Paulus Bosschaert de jonge was said to be 22 when, assisted by his mother Symtje Bosschaert, he was betrothed to Lysbeth de Nimay on 1 October 1644. He was a banquetbackergesel at the time. She was assisted by her father Samuel de Nimay (DTB 461/109). On 29 May 1646, Paulus Bosschaert and Elisabeth de Nimay had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Samuel de Nimay, Sijmontje Bosschaert (probably the widow of Paulus Bosschaert I), and Geertruijt de Wilde (DTB 8/91). The post mortem inventory of Paulus Bosschaert de jonge, widower of Elisabeth van Nemey, was taken on 26 November 1655. The total value of his movable goods came to 888 f. (NA 2160, Not. Jan d'Amour). Neither Paulus Bosschaert I nor II, who were both pastrybakers, should be confused with Pauwels Henrico (Hendricksz.) Bosschaert (or Busschaert), cloth merchant from Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1585, who died before 25 September 1620 when his death inventory was taken (INVNO 1297). The widow of Paulus (Woutersz.?) Bosschaert paid a tax of 15 f. in 1631, at which time she lived on the Nes (Kohier, fol. 235, p. 54). A baby child of Paulus Bosgert (probably the son of Paulus Bosschaert II) was buried on 11 October 1655, coming from the Nes (DTB 1055/79vo). Paulus Bosgert himself, also living in the Nes, was buried 6 days later.

Buyer NotesThe buyer must be Jan Claesz. van Hooren who earlier had bought 1 bandoor mette cas. He was born in 1565 and died on 9 April 1622. He was a merchant dealing in tar (teerkooper) living in the Teertuinen outside the St. Olofspoort. He had a share in his brother Gerbrand Claesz. van Hooren's wine business. He was also the brother of Pieter Claesz. Kod or Codde of INVNO 646 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp.448-9). He was married to Margriete van Neck (of R 32149) on 12 April 1594. In a deposition of 13 March 1619, he was said to be 53 years old (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 5 August 1602, Jan Claesz. van Hoorn was appointed guardian over the estate of Jacob van Neck (I) and over the goods inherited by Jan van Neck (WK 5073/513, fol. 105vo.) After his death, his widow continued his tar business. She and her son Isaack were insinuated by Jan van de Wouwer of R 23231 and Jan Outgertsz. for failing to make full payment on a delivery of tar (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom, act of 4 May 1632). BuyerJan van Hooren fabricx [meester ?]
Buyer FamilyHooren, Jan (Jansz) van, (fabrickmeester) (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, the fabrickmeester Jan Jansz. van Hoorn, born in 1561, was a member of the Raed of Amsterdam from 1613 to 1623. He was the son of Jan Simonsz. van Hoorn and Aeff Cornelisdr. He married Marij Egberts Vinck, the daughter of Egbert Pietersz. and Brecht Pieters on 29 April 1582. After her death, he remarried with Geertruyd de Rijck, the daughter of Jacob Simonsz. de Rijck. On 6 June 1602, Jan Jansz. van Hoorn, widower of Maria Egberts, signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Gertruda de Rijcke Jacobs, widow of Absalom Niclaes. She was assisted by Griete Claes Hoofden (Hooft), her mother, and Sijmon and Wim de Rijck, her brothers (on Sijmon de Rijck, see R 20389), and by Pieter Jacobsz. Nachtglas, member of the Raad and fabriekmeester. Jan brought 12,000 f. to the marriage, Gertruda, various properties (NA 11, fol. 103vo, Not. S. Henrix, Extracten). The marriage took place on 23 June 1602. Jacob Simonsz. de Rijck was a captain of the Watergeuzen who fled in Amsterdam in 1566 and died in Veere in 1584. The daughter of Giertgen Jacobs de Rijck, named Elisabet Absalons, who died before 1635, was married to Willem Adriaensz. Raep, the brother of Pieter Adriaensz. Raep of R 20093 (see NA 656, fol. 85, Not. J. Warnaertsz., Extracten). Jan Jansz. van Hooren became fabrickmeester of Amsterdam in 1603. He died on 11 May 1623 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 295.) He freighted four ships between 1591 and 1602 and one ship in 1606 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek, 17(1931), p. 270 and Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 184(1983), p. 279.) Via his second wife, he was related to the famous litterateur P.C. Hooft. In a letter of 1637 (exact date unknown), P.C. Hooft recommended Simon van Hooren, whom he called his neeve (actually his grandnephew), to Constantin Huygens, with the request to pass the recommendation to the Prince of Orange, to ask for his grace, after the young man had got into a fight and killed a man in an inn. Simon van Hooren, as P.C. Hooft pointed out in his letter, was the son of Jan Jansz. van Hooren (the buyer of this lot); his grandmother was a daughter of Nicolaes Hooft; his grandfather was Jacob Simonsz. Rijck, the father of Simon de Rijck of R 20839 ( De briefwisseling van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, vol. 2, p. 181). Another son of the buyer, named Jan van Hooren de jonghe was married to Weijntje Pieters. On 10 July 1611, the couple had their daughter Marijtje baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jan van Hooren, fabrickmeester (our buyer), Bely Lourisdr., Brecht Jans, and Barent Jansz. (DTB 4/355).

Buyer FamilyRomburch (Romborch), Hans
Buyer NotesOn 27 October 1616, Hans Romborch, from Wesel, 31, no living parents, having lived for 7 years on the Monckelbaensburch, was betrothed to Aachje de Rijcke, 21, assisted by her mother Maritje Cornelis, living on the Coningsgracht (DTB 421/2). On 22 July 1618, Hans Romborch and Aechtje de Rijcke had their son Pieter baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Cornelis Cornelisz. (the godfather) (DTB 40/13). Hans Romborch was the son of Pierre Romborgh I and the brother of Maria Romborgh of INVNO 243 and of Pieter Romborch II, also from Wesel, of R 29548 (see the witnesses to the baptisms of the children in the TEXT of R 161 of Montias1). Susanna Romborch, who was betrothed to Johannes Nederhoven of INVNO 1277 on 22 August 1631, may have been the sister of Maria and Hans Romborgh. On 10 July 1618, Hans Romburch and Jacques Mercier, merchants, insinuated the Notary Pieter Ruttens I (of R 20010) for having defamed them, spreading rumors that they were bankrupt. Ruttens responded to this insinuation by saying that he hoped he had spoken out of carelessness (onvoorsichtichheyt) (NA 624, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) On 28 September 1636, Anne Thomas, spinster, 42, Reynsgen Pauwels, spinster, 28, declared at the request of Aechgen Rycken, wife of Hans Romburgh, that Lodewyck Wilckes had caused a great commotion in front of an inn and had insulted the producent (Aechgen Rycken) (NA 315, fol. 209).
