BuyerDirck Teulingh
Buyer FamilyTeulingh (Tholincx), Dirck
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Diederick Tholincx (spelled Thelincx in the 1631 Kohier), merchant, lieutenant of the civil guard in 1622, and alderman in 1625. He was baptized on 19 March 1589, the son of the merchant Aert Tholingh, born in 's Hertogenbosch, who died in 1600, and of Anne Hermans. Dirck Tholincx died in 1654. He was a merchant on the Heeregracht in Hamburgh and a director of the V.O.C. He went bankrupt in 1644 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 365). In 1631, he paid a tax of 175 f. (Kohier, fol. 2, p. 2). He was a portrayed as a schutter in the Korporaalschap of Jonas Cornelisz. Witsen by Cornelis van der Voort (from whom he bought the present lot in 1614) about 1616 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p, 349). His post-faillit inventory of 20 April 1644 was full of attributed paintings (INVNO 1248). Diederick Tholincx was the brother of the merchant Herman Tholincx, born in 's Hertogenbosch, who married Grietge Hooft, the daughter of Burgomaster C.P. Hooft in 1610 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 366-7 and Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 315). He was only distantly related to Aernout Tholincx, portrayed by Rembrandt in 1656 (his father Aert Tholincx was the brother of Wouter Tholincx, who was the grandfather of Arnout Tholincx).

BuyerAntony Marijns pasteybacker
Buyer FamilyMarijns (Marinisz.), Antony [pasteybacker]
Buyer NotesOn 25 April 1606, Antoine Marinus, from Vlissingen, pasteybacker (pastry baker), was betrothed to Josijntje van den Bremde from Antwerp, 30 (DTB 411/736). Josijntge van den Bremde was probably the daughter of the pasteybacker Jeremias van den Bremde and a sister of the painter Daniel van den Bremde of R 31208. On 6 September 1612, Anthony Marijnissz. and Josijne van den Bremde had their daughter Susanna baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Gijsbert Kornelisz., Govert Josephsz.(?), and Carel Deckers(?) (DTB 5/31). On 31 December 1617, the same parents had a child baptized in the same church in the presence of Abraham de Decker (of R 33003), Guilliam Michielsz., and Catlijntje van Doesburgh (DTB 5/236). On Catlijntje van Doesburgh, see the NOTES to R 34728. Some time before 2 July 1620 he issued an interest-bearing obligation yielding 62 f. per year which was deposited with the Orphan Chamber on that date on behalf of Meyndert, the son of the late Egbert Claesz. Coninck. Antony Marijnis died in 1625. For the auction sale of his possessions, see INVNO 827. Two vrouws tronien were sold at the sale of 1625, one for 4 f. and the other for f 4: 2: 8. One of these may be the present lot.

BuyerJaques de Ville tot Grebber
Buyer NotesN. de Roever suggested that the buyer was the painter Jacques de Ville and that he was apprenticed to (Frans Pietersz. ?) de Grebber (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p.192) This unlikely if only because Frans de Grebber's atelier was located in Haarlem. Another guess is that he was working with or living in the house of the goldsmith Jacob de Grebber of R 20988. On the painter Jacques de Ville, see R 36770. C.H.C. Van Aspermont suggested, unpersuasively, that the buyer was the dyer Jacques de Ville, born c. 1577, who was married to Sara Vermou (not Vermon) (Oud Holland, 17(1899), p. 94.) It is likely that Sara Vermou and Anna Vermou, the wife of the painter Barent Poelman, at whose request the goods left by Jacques de Ville, dyer, were sold in 1629, were sisters (ibid.)

BuyerBartholomeus van Gennip in de Oudesyts Arm in de Eent
Buyer FamilyGennip (Gennep), Bartholomeus van
Buyer NotesOn 27 February 1616, Bartholomeus van Gennip, merchant, in the name of his father Goosen van Gennip, insinuated Adriaen van Plancken for his failure to pay an obligation (NA 621, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) On 30 September 1617, Bartholomeus van Gennip, from Haarlem, 31 years old, living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Agneta Willems Pijnappels, from den Bosch, 28 (DTB 668/120). On 4 December the couple had a child baptized baptized in the presence of Elijas van Ceulen (DTB 6/128). Elias van Ceulen (of R 37031) was married to Susanna Pijnappel, who may have been the sister of Agneta Pijnappel. In 1631, Bartholomeus van Gennip paid a tax of 100 f., at which time he lived on the Raemsloot (Kohier, fol. 217, p. 50). On 7 February 1632, Bartholomeus van Gennep (signs Gennop) sold to Jacob Gerritsz. a house on the Deventer Houtmarckt de Drie Visch Corven, next to Cornelis Outgertsz. on the North side and Herman Alberts, lumber dealer, on the South side, for 7,500 f. (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On 16 May 1634, Bartholomeus van Gennep sold 20 morgen of land in the Beemster to Franchoys Woutersz. for 2,050 f. (NA 771, Not. Verhey). On 27 January 1637, Bartholomeus van Gennip, living in Haarlem, insinuated Abraham van der Sluijs (of R 20029) regarding some tulips that Van der Sluijs had offered him and then refused to deliver (see the NOTES to R 20029). Bartholomeus van Gennip seems to have died in Haarlem, where his inventory was drawn up in 1643 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1149).

BuyerAndries Steenwinckel buyrman van den Voort
Buyer FamilySteenwinckel, Andries
Buyer NotesOn 26 January 1610, Andries Steenwinckel, from Antwerp, tailor, 23 years old, living on the Breestraet, assisted by his mother Maeijken Melis, was betrothed to Catelijn Caleijt, also from Antwerp, 23, assisted by Hans Caleijt, her brother, and Claerken Calet, her aunt. Both were literate. Andries, living on the Breestraet, was indeed a neighbor of Cornelis van der Voort (DTB 414/236). On 26 July 1614, Adriana van Maldeghem, widow of Lieven Heylinc (the notary), assisted by her guardian Andries van Steenwinckel, gave power of attorney to Rogier Alewijn merchant, to collect various assets in Flanders that she was entitled to (NA 21, fol.0-6, Not. S. Henrix, Extracten). Rogier Alewijn or Halewijn of R 27660 was a merchant of South Netherlandish origin who bought various spices from the V.O.C. between 1620 and 1623 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, pp. 223-4). On 17 April 1624, the goods left by Andries Steenwinckel and Catalijn Caleth were sold by the Orphan Chamber. The proceeds were only 148 f. 17 st. (INVNO 1071).

Buyer NotesThe buyer is presumed to be identical with Charles Cooren of INVNO 683, dated 6 June 1617. There are two kitchens in that inventory: R 27361, which sold for 18 f. and R 27355, which sold for 20 f. If either one is the lot sold here, there was a sharp decrease in its sale price in three years. Charles Cooren may have been living in the house or next door to Jasper Honckelboer, cloth merchant (R 20491).

BuyerPieter Bicker
Buyer FamilyBicker, Pieter
Buyer NotesIn 1606, Pieter Bicker, living in het vergulde lavoir in the Warmoesstraet, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 11/69 F 79). On 5 May 1632, Burgomeester Andries Bicker (1586-1652), Pieter Bicker and Jan Bicker (1591-1653) Dieuwertgen Bicker (of R 20270) and Aeltgen Bicker, assisted by their fore-mentioned brothers, all heirs of their mother Aeltgen (Alyd) Andries Boelisdr., named their brother Jacob Bicker to transfer in their name a capital share of 25,400 f. share in the V.O.C. All were children of the late Burgomeester Gerrit Bicker Pietersz. (1557-1630) and of their afore-mentioned mother Alyd Andries Boelens (1557-1630). (NA 910, Not. Pieter Eyloff, film 1146). Jan Bicker married Agniet de Graeff (1603-1656) on 18 November 1625. He built the domain Akerendam, which he sold in 1649 to Gerard van Hellemont, the husband of his brother Cornelis's daughter, Margareta Bicker van Zwieten (Maandblad Amstelodamum 45(1958), p. 123). Jacob (Gerritsz.) Bicker (1588-1646) died unmarried. On 22 October 1634. Jan Bicker, in lieu of the heirs of Pieter Bicker, his brother, named Hillebrand Pietersz. in Rotterdam to collect a debt of 131 f. 15 st. (NA 843, fol. 732, Not. Hoogeboom). The daughter of Pieter Bicker, named Lisbet Pieters, married to Joachim Hermansz. Rendorp (cited in the NOTES to R 26504), was accused by the Church Council of having Mennonite sympathies but she was not excommunicated (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, p. 174).

Buyer FamilyVerporten (Verpoorten), Gerrit (I)
Buyer NotesGerrit Verpoorten (de oude) was a merchant, born in Antwerp, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1589 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 316). On 20 October 1595, Jacques Carbeels, Gielis Bacclas de jonge, Gerrit Verpoorten and Andries Rijckaert (I), all merchants in Amsterdam, passed a procuration to collect money due to them in Dantzig (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 61). On 27 February 1597, he witnessed the baptism of a son of Valerius van Gistel (of R 27537) in the Lutheran Church (DTB 138/17). On 3 June 1597, Geeraert Verpoorten, merchant residing in Amsterdam, named Claes Pietersz., merchant living in Dantzig, to collect money due to him from the ship of De witte Leeuw (Winkelman, op.cit. p. 426). On 28 September 1597, Gerardt Verpoorten had his son Jochim baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Anthonis Cuijper and Tanneke Lems (DTB 138/18). He was also the father of Gerrit Verpoorten de jonge (II), droggist in 1627, of Pieter Gerritsz. Verporten and of Jacob Gerritsz. Verpoorten (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 638 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 415). On 27 October 1617, a contract was signed by Jullien Lanson and Gerrit Verpoorten de jonge (II) whereby Lanson had Moreau apprenticed to Verpoorten, drogist, for four years for 100 f. a year (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 638). The individual named Gerrit Verpoorten who paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631 and lived on the Warmoesstraet may have been the father or the son (Kohier, fol. 209 vo., p. 48). On 9 February 1632, Dirck Abbas, commissary general of the convoys and licenses, the honorable Frederick de Vries, secretary of the city, for one half, substituting for Pietertge de Vries, their respective sister, together for two thirds, and also in the name of Jacob van Teylingen for a third part sold to Gerrit Verpoorten de jonge (II), merchant, a house on the Dam, at the sign of the Olijfsboom, next to Nicolaes Pauw on the West side and Isaack Hersbeeck on the East side, and the Beurs on the South side, with the consentment of Nicolaes Seys. The gallery will stay in place. The selling price is 26,750 f. (NA 991, fol. 7, Not.. J. Bosch). Pietertge de Vries was a regent of the Spinhuis in 1650 (information kindly provided by Sheila Muller). On 21 March 1639, Gerrit Verpoorten (almost certainly II) transferred in full possession to Joost Pietersz. Wybrants, likewise merchant, all his movable goods, including 20 paintings (NA 419A, fol. 320, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 29 January 1645, Joost Pietersz. Wybrants, merchant in Amsterdam, named Hendrick van der Slange in Monster to represent him (with Gerrit Pietersz. Custewael) in connection with a shipment of Bordeaux wine which had been stranded in Holland Hoeck (Monster, ONA 6037, #979, kindly communicated by Gerard van Eendenburg).

Buyer NotesLike several other other lots in this sale, the present entry was preceded with a price: 2-7-0. The other prices, if they are prices, preceding some other lots, are either 2-7-0, half that amount 1-3 1/2-0, 2-18-0 or some other similar amount. It is possible that they represent about 2.73 percent of the sales price. But then, in the case of the present lot which was withdrawn, how would the fraction have been set ? In the case of lots 0027, 0028, and 0029, which sold for 41 f., 50 f., and 37 f. respectively, the same amount 2-7-0 was noted in the margin.

Buyerno buyer, probably sold for cash. [Crossed out: Mr. David]
Buyer FamilyDavid, Mr.
Buyer NotesThe occupation of Mr. David is cited in R 29456, where we also learn that he lived in the Pijlsteech in 1609. From the purchases of various lots, we also learn that he was a barber and hence, possibly, a surgeon (R 28036, R 28122 etc.) Mr. David, who may or may not be identical with our buyer, paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the South side of the Hertestraet (Kohier, fol. 84, p. 20). A surgeon named Mr. David Gerritsz. (of INVNO 147) may or may not be identical with our buyer. After the death of Mr. David Gerritsz., surgeon, his widow Marritgen Cornelis had the goods that they possessed in common inventorized on 7 July 1638 (INVNO 147). On 14 September 1638, Maritje Cornelis appeared before the Orphan Chamber to present her son Gerrit, 1 1/2 years old, whose father was the late David Gerritsz. van Muerten, surgeon, and declared that he was untitled to 800 f. from his father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). Mr. David is probably not identical with Mr. David Harteshoofd of R 33379.

BuyerArent Hem
Buyer FamilyHem, Arent (Aernout) (Hermansz.) (van der)
Buyer NotesThe buyer seems to be identical with Arent Hermansz. Hem, who became Jonker Arnold van der Hem, Ridder, Heer van Nedersteyn, Corl en Hilteprant, 1586-1656. In 1612, he lived op den Dam in Weesp. He was raised to the Ridderschap by Ferdinand II in 1620 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 6). On 14 July 1611, Arent Hermansz. Hem, 25 years old, living op de Dam, assisted by his mother Maritgen Arents, was betrothed to Margaretha Reyersdr. Vos (DTB 666/294). She lived from 1593 to 1638. He was living on the Heregracht in 1631, when he paid a tax of 175 f. (Kohier, fol. 88, p. 21). He and his wife Margaretha Vos were portrayed about 1620 by Cornelis van der Voort (Amsterdammers geportretteerd; Kopstukken 1600-1800 (N. Middelkop ed.), Exh. Cat. 2002/2003,, p. 49). Arent Hermansz. Hem was the brother of Ysbrant Hermansz. Hem of R 28963. The family was Roman Catholic. On 27 May 1638, Aernout van der Hem named Jan Jansz. Cleerbesem de jonge (cited in the NOTES to R 21322) to represent him in Utrecht to collect an obligation due to him by Jacques Asch van Wyck (NA 1186, fol.22, Not. J. de Vos).

BuyerWillem van den Bunden schilder
Buyer FamilyBunden (Bundel), Willem van den
Buyer NotesThe painter Willem van den Bundel, born in Brussels about 1577, was active in Amsterdam from about 1598 to 1622. On 25 March 1600, Guillame van den Bundel, from Brussels, painter, 23 years old, having lived 2 1/2 years on the Rockin, having brought his father's consent under his hand, which Gillis van Koninckloo declared well to recognize, was betrothed to Susanna Wickaerts, from Antwerp, 27, living next to the Grimmenessesluijs (12 1/2 years), assisted by her mother Driesken (?) Bachelier. The wedding was to take place in Delft (DTB 409/134). On 26 April 1609, he and his wife passed their joint testament wherein three children were mentioned: Maijke, Anne and Guilham (Oud Holland 38(1920), p. 69). On 26 July 1617, Willem van den Bundel, about 40 years old, declared at the request of Adriaen van Nieulandt, painter, that he had seen Van Nieulandt speak to Carel Hermansz., asking him for the money he (Hermansz.) had promised him (Van Nieulandt). Hermansz. answered that he would soon have his money (ibid. p. 68). Willem van den Bundel registered in the St. Luke's guild of Delft about 1623. He died in Delft in 1655 (Montias, Artists and Artisans in Delft, table A2 of Appendix A and Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 308).

BuyerAbraham Verwer schilder Willem van den Bunden
Buyer FamilyVerwer, Abraham (de) [schilder]
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a marine painter, born, probably in the Soutern Netherlands, around 1585. He married Barbara Sillevoorts in 1607, at which time he was still recorded as a schrijnwercker (joiner) (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 397.) Willem van den Bundel may have been his surety (borg) or was living with him. Verwer lived in Amsterdam in 1614 and 1617 and probably in 1628 if he is the individual of that name who signed the Remonstrant petition of that year. At least two letters are known that he wrote to Constantijn Huygens. One, undated, thanks him for a commission in Honselaersdijck for two landscapes. Another, dated 9 January 1636, calls him my very worthy friend, again thanking him for the commission of a painting of Vlissingen and one of Veer (De briefwisseling van Constantijn Huygens R.G.P. 19(1913) and 21(1914)). He was noted in Paris in 1639 and again in Amsterdam in 1650, where he was buried on 19 August of that year (Briels, ibid.) He was the father of the painter Justus de Verwer, born in Amsterdam in 1626. His daughter Catharina Verwer was betrothed to the history and portrait painter Christiaen Dusart, son of Jan Dusart, on 27 September 1642 (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 96). In 1668, Christiaen Dusart had lent Rembrandt 600 f., for which he received as pledge a konstboeck of Lucas van Leyden (perhaps identical with R 34524) (ibid.)

Buyer FamilyJeroen, Mr. (Torel ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Mr. Jeroen, luteplayer, who paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the North side of the Rheestraet (Kohier, fol. 308vo., p. 70). On 6 December 1619, Jeronimus Torel had bought a house on the Keisersgracht from Jan Egbertsz. (Hoppesack), hops dealer (Maandblad Amstelodamum 57(1970), p. 98). On 15 May 1626, in the accounting submitted to the Orphan Chamber for the heirs of the late Andries de Graeuw (INVNO 682 and 6820), Jeroen speelman was paid 4 f. for teaching the son (probably Andries de Graeuw de jonge) for lute playing (WK 5073/1191). In 1633, Ieronimus Toret (probably a misreading for Torel or Torell) and Willem Jansz., speelluyden of Amsterdam, were paid 208 f. for the purchase of various instruments by the city (Oud Holland 24(1906), p. 124). According to Dr. Rudolf Rasch of Utrecht University (letter of 24 March 1999), Jeronimus Torell was active as a musician in Amsterdam from 1597 to 1640.

BuyerValerius van Gistel op te Rouaense kaij
Buyer FamilyGistel(e), Valerius van (I)
Buyer NotesValerius van Gistel I was of Antwerp origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 302). According to E. Lieve-Pelser, he was probably born about 1565. He was a deacon of the Lutheran Church. As one of 27 aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor), he signed a petition in 1627, concerning the collection of a levy on grain to benefit the poor. He was married to Elsken Jans van de Velde. Their daughter Jacomijntge (probably their oldest child) was born in Antwerp in 1586 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). He was first noted in Amsterdam on 2 October 1590 when he had his daughter Catharina baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Lambrecht Williart and Lijneken Rijckaerts (DTB 138/1). On 15 November 1592, his daughter Tanneken was baptized in the presence of Esterken Verspriet and Gelaude Ophogen (DTB 1138/6). Esterken (or Hester) Verspreet, the daughter of Hans Verspreet, was the future wife of Jean le Bleu of R 27639. Glaude Ophogen was a merchant and cloth dealer, born in Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1585 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 309). On 22 April 1595, Valerius van Gistel's daughter Susanna was baptized in the presence of Joost van Gistel (DTB 138/12). On 27 February 1597, his son Jacob was baptized in the presence of Gerardt Verpoorten (of R 27491) and the wife of Gelaudeus Ophogen (DTB 138/17). When Valerius van Gistel's daughter, Sara, was betrothed on 23 November 1620, she was assisted by her mother Elsken van de Velde (R 32512). Valerius van Gistel I was the factor of Marten Pool van Riga in 1593, who was probably a grain dealer (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 505.) On 4 November 1619, Valerius van Gistel de oude was named as one of the insurers (assuradeurs) of the ship St.Pieter ende St. Paul, which sailed from Venice to Constantinople. He and the other insurers named a correspondent in Naples for restitution (of cargo lost) (NA 212, film 111). He later became an important grain merchant who signed a petition concerning the unloading of imported grain in 1621 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 418-9). He had an account of 11 folios at the Wisselbank, one of the largest among merchants born in the Southern Netherlands (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 96). He freighted 10 ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1631), p. 269). On 30 May 1603, the painter Hans Vredeman de Vries, Hans Wyderhuysen (of R 29463), and Valerius van Gistele, executors of the testament of Anneken Gotthens, last widow of the late Hans Bol (the painter), turned to the High Court in The Hague to petition for a commitimus of the inventory because they did not know what the condition of the estate might be (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 301). The Bol family was Lutheran, as were Valerius van Gistel and Hans Wyderhuysen. In 1606, Falerius Gistel, living in the Nieuwstraet, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. (GAA, 110/61 F 814). In 1621, Valerius van Gistel I had to come to an agreement with his creditors to avoid bankruptcy (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 231). Nevertheless, he was able to pay a tax of 165 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 12, p. 4). On 7 September 1635, Valerius van Gistel passed his testament. He left a bequest to the Evangelical Church. His heirs were his sons Jacob and Hans van Gistel and his daughters Jacobmina, Catharina and Sara van Gistel. There was no mention of a son named Valerius (NA 641, fol. 241-3, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) Jacob van Gistel, the son of Valerius van Gistel I, baptized in 1597, must have died shortly before 12 January 1639 when his death inventory was taken. The inventory contained many portraits including that of his father and numerous other paintings (NA 801, Not. Jan Verheij, Extracten). Valerius van Gistelen II, who may have been the nephew of Valerius van Gistel I, was born about 1596 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base), first noted in Amsterdam in 1616, bought various lands in England, proceeding from the estate of the Earl of Bedford, from Filberto Vernatti, on 31 May 1632 (NA 667, pak 1, fol. 100vo, Nots. J. Warnaertsz, Extracten). On 1 February 1618, Adriaen van Ackerlack, 22, made a deposition concerning deliveries of merchandise to Valerius Gistelen de jonge (NA 199, film 199, Not. J.F. Bruyning). In 1636, when Adriaen van Ackerlack was suspected of being insolvent, a number of Amsterdam merchants testified to his credit-worthyness (see the NOTES to R 35041).

Buyer NotesOn 17 November 1612, Adriaen Breman, from Leeuwarden, was betrothed to Marie Jans van Wassebergen, living in Haarlem (DTB 763/12). He was a grain merchant. He signed the same petition in 1621 regarding the unloading of imported grain as did Valerius van Gistele (R 27537). In 1627, he joined 26 other aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor), who were also for the most part grain dealers, in a petition concerning the collection of a levy on grain to benefit the poor. He was buried in the Zuiderkerk in 1630 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(87), p. 87). Adriaen Breman freighted two ships between 1609 and 1616 and three ships between 1617 and 1625 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 185(1983), p. 627 and 186(1983), p. 776.) On 20 May 1669, the death inventory of Maria van Wassenbergen, widow of Adriaen Breeman, was taken. It included a portrait of the late Adriaen Breeman (Not. H. Venkel, film 3023).

BuyerJan Walles in de Dijckgraef
Buyer FamilyWalles (Wallis), Jan
Buyer NotesOn 23 November 1624, Jan Wallis, Willem Sweerts (of R 30037), and Cornelis Matheusz. Heuts, the uncles of the orphan children, were named as guardians over the children of Jan du Pire, by their stepmother, Anna Stryk. Willem Leenertsz. Sweerts was married to Janneken du Pire, the sister of Marie du Pire, who in turn was married to Coenradt de Wilde Maertensz. of R 30051. Marie (Maria) du Pire was apparently the mother of Anna du Pire who married the painter Bartholomeus van der Helst (see the NOTES to R 30037). On 20 December 1667, Bartholomeus van der Helst, as husband of Anna du Pire, was said to be co-heir of the late Maria du Pire (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 405). Later, Pauwels van Fockenburgh was named guardian in the place of the late Jan Wallis (WK 5073/513, fol. 23). Janneken du Pire died on 17 June 1621 (De Navorscher, 84(1935), p. 36). On 11 July 1625, the guardians over the children, who were said to be the grandchildren of Anna Gommers, brought 4,000 f. on their behalf to the Chamber (WK 5073/789). The widow of Jan Walles paid a tax of 120 f. in 1631, at which time she lived in the Bantamstraet over de brugh (Kohier, fol. 122 vo., p. 29). On 18 May 1634, Sara du Pire, widow of Jan Wallis, named her stepson Wolfert Webber (?) de jonge, wine dealer, in a merchant (NA 596, Not. Lambert Lamberti). When Pieter, the son of Johannes Sweers and Abigael Ardes, was baptized in the O.K. on 27 October 1641, Sara du Pier, widow of Jean Wallis, was a witness, along with Pieter Troes (DTB 7/305).

BuyerJan Hage op't Achterburgwal int huys van Nanning Floris
Buyer FamilyHage(n), Jan
Buyer NotesJan Hagen signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 17 December 1631, Jan Hagen, living in the Soutketen, was betrothed to Margarieta (Grietje) Hooft, from Amsterdam, widow of Harman Tholingh, living on the Keysersgracht (5 years a widow), assisted by her sister Aechtie Hooft (DTB 672/171). Grietje Hooft died in 1639 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 367). Jan Hagen apparently remarried with Trijn Jansdr. Lap of Monnikendam (where he was born). He died in August 1645. Trijn Jansdr. was left with three children. He was a soutkeetman (the owner of salt-boiler works) near the St. Anthonispoort. In 1631, he paid a tax of 70 f., living near the Soutketen, near the Haarlemmerspoort (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 148 and Kohier, fol. 199vo., p. 46). Nanning Floris was a doctor in medicine. On 6 March 1583, his daughter Katrijn married Nicolaes de Wael, Commissaris van de Monstering for Amsterdam. If that is the same person, he must have been quite old in 1614 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 127). The buyer may be identical with Sr. Jan van der Hagen who, on 1 July 1639, together with his brother Aernout, both being merchants, declared having received some tapiten from Pieter de Cracht, which carpets or tapestries were to be sent for sale in Sweden (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 531).

Buyer NotesOn 14 December 1610, Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel, wine merchant, made a declaration, at the request of an inhabitant of Leiden, concerning the taxing of wine in Amsterdam (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 699). He was 26 years old when he married Geertge Adriaens Roos, 18, the daughter of Adriaen Cornelisz. Roos and of Trijn Claes, on 12 December 1599 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 190). Geertge Adriaens was the sister of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos of R 31021. On 9 April 1614, Outgert Pietersz., together with his wife Geertje Ariaens, had his daughter Anna baptized in the presence of Trijn Claes (Geertje's mother) (DTB 4/42). On 27 August 1627, Willem Hendricksz., 63, Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel, 53, Reynier van Buuren, 60, Isaack van Gherwen, 47, Dirck van Dans, 43, and Jan Pietersz. van Delft, 41, all wine dealers in Amsterdam, declared that it is customary for the wine-tax farmer (wijnpachter) to notify dealers the day before he visits them to inspect and gauge their barrels (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven , 78(1933), p. 631). Outger Pietersz. was Commissaris van Kleine Zacken in 1620, commissaris van Huwelijksche Zaken in 1634-1637, and flagbearer (vaandrig) of the Amsterdam militia (before 1620). Outgert Pietersz. was related to Vockert Dircx Coornhert (of R 7628) and was one of the heirs cited in his testament of 16 April 1627 (NA 857, fol. 1-6, Not. Pieter Rodenbergh). On 29 July 1636, Maria Schonemans (of INVNO 192) passed her testament in which she left Outger Pietersz. Spiegel 1000 f. and discharged him of all guarantees he had given in her favor (NA 642, film 4953, Not. Sybrant Cornelissen, fol. 205). On 28 August 1636, the honorable Outger Pietersz. Spiegel and Juriaen Huybertsz. (of INVNO 1184), both wine merchants, declared at the request of the widow of Adriaen Cornelisz. Roos (Geertge Adriaens's father) that they were both present when an agreement was passed between Machtelt Brouwers, widow of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos. According to this agreeement, the paintings that had been collected (ingebracht) by Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos, should, after the death of Machtelt Brouwers, revert to the producent, i.e. to the widow of Adriaen Cornelisz. Roos. To this end, an inventory should be made of the paintings under the supervision of Outger Pietersz. It was also stipulated that Machtelt Brouwers should not allow the paintings to be copied (NA 642, film 4953, Not. Sybrand Cornelissen, fol. 222-3). Jeuriaen Huijbertsz., wine dealer, was married to Maria Sturcx, whose death inventory was taken on 28 April 1642. She had formerly been married to Jacques van Wynegem, a merchant of South Netherlandish origin (NA 413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyningh). On 17 March 1637, Outger Pietersz. Spiegel, commissaris van de houwelijcke sacken, and Gasper van Diemen made a declaration (content illegible) (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). In February 1645, Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel joined a number of Amsterdam merchants in a petition calling for the maintenance of the currency regulation of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, 59(1925), p. 88). On Anne and Adriana Spiegels, daughters of Outger Pietersz. Spiegel, see the TEXT of R 365 of Montias1.

BuyerCornelis Huybertsz. op't Water in de Pauw.
Buyer FamilyHuybertsz., Cornelis
Buyer NotesOn 8 July 1610, Cornelis Huybertsz., 23 years old, living on the Nieuwe Dijck, assisted by his father Huybert Dircksz. and his mother Anna Jacobs Paenden, was betrothed to Maritje Senten, 20, assisted by her swager and nicht Jan Hermansz. van Pechell (DTB 666/235). Cornelis Huybertsz., living op 't Water in the house de Pauw. was a soap boiler (zeepzieder). He signed a petition of the soapboilers concerning the amount to be given for each barrel of soap to the barrilmakers. Twelve years after he bought the present lot, in a deposition of 10 August 1626, he was said to be living op 't Water in de drie Swaentgens (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 603). He was one of the registered soap-boilers after swearing the oath in 1627 (S.A.C. Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 83(1991), p. 92). On 27 October 1626, Tryntgen Huybrechts, assisted by her brother Cornelis Huybrechts, presented her two children to the Orphan Chamber, Neeeltgen, 7, and Jannetgen, 4, whose father was Wouter de Lennep, painter. A sum of 1,200 f. was assigned for their inheritance from De Lennep (WK 5073/789). Wouter de Lennep should not be confused with Wouter van Lennep of R 20505, who was a wine distributor. Our buyer, if he remarried, may be identical with the individual named Cornelis Huybrechtsz. who apparently died before 26 June 1636. On that date, Job (?) Pietersz. Uijl named his uncle Jacob Jansz. Stout (of R 32182) to sell on behalf of Claertgen Pieters, widow of Cornelis Huybrechtsz., various assets, including a house on the Conincxgracht (NA 991, fol. 58, Not. J. Bosch). The last-named Cornelis Huybrechtsz. is certainly not identical with Cornelis Huybertsz., living on the Binnen Amstel, who was buried on 23 August 1640. A sum of 10 f. were paid on his behalf to the church (DTB 1054/133vo).

BuyerElias Pels naest Jupiter
Buyer FamilyPels, Elias
Buyer NotesElias Pels was a merchant, born in Antwerp about 1568, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1605. He became a citizen of Amsterdam on 2 June 1606 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 310). In 1606, Elias Pels, living in de groene Tente, bought lots for 3 f. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 37/22 F 297). On 20 December 1607, Elijas Pels and his wife Susanna Goijers had their daughter Angeniet baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Geertruid Pels (DTB 4/225). The fact that Abraham de Goijer lived naest Jupiter in 1612 (R 28557), as did Elijas Pels, suggests that Susanna Goijers was probably related to (perhaps the sister of) Abraham de Goijer. On 10 August 1610, Elias had a notary notify Cornelis Walichsen who had sold him in the preceding year a share in the V.O.C. at 40 percent over par, that the share was supposed to be delivered in a year. Since a year has now elapsed, Elias demanded delivery (in the year that had elapsed the shares had risen above 140). Walichsen replied that he had sold the contract to Harmen Rosecrans and that he did not feel responsible (Van Dillen in Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 16(1930), p. 105). Elias Pels was a director of the W.I.C. kamer of Amsterdam in 1624 (C. Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, 1957, p. 542.) On the house Jupiter, which was owned by Gerrit Schoonhoven in 1618, see R 31988. The widow of Elias Pels paid a tax of 670 f. in 1631, living on the Voorste Verwerstraert (Kohier, fol. 222, p. 51).

BuyerArent Pietersz. in't Groene Laken
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Arent (Brughman)
Buyer NotesOn 17 May 1618, Arent Pietersz. Brughman, 44, merchant, made a declaration over the purchase of bannen at the request of Andries van den Broeck (of R 28792) (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning), Arent Pietersz. Brughman (or Brugman) was the son of Pieter Jansz. Brugman and Lysbeth Dircx, who, after the death of her husband, carried on his rich cloth business in the Groene Lacken. She was the sister-in-law of the painter Arent Arentsz. (Cabel), four of whose paintings turned up in an inventory of Arent Pietersz.'s possessions taken on 1 January 1635 (INVNO 226). In 1606, Arent Pietersz. (Brughman), living in or next to the Groen Lacken, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 12 f. (GAA, 97/15 F 727). On 25 August 1622, Arent Pietersz. Brughman signed an agreement with 20 other lieffhebberen der Nederduytsche Poesy whereby they committed themselves to contribute 2 Fl. Pounds each to the upkeep and subsidy of the poet Jan Jansz. Starter (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 54). On 14 June 1635, Arent Pietersz. Bruchman, from Amsterdam, widower of Neeltje Cornelis, living in the Lamuijen, was betrothed to Aaltie Allerts de Veer, widow of Pieter van Aenradt (DTB 443/374). The Lamuijen was probably the house de vergulde lamoenboom in the Houttuijnen where Aaltje Alberts was living with her husband the wine dealer Pieter van Aenradt, when, on 30 November 1630, she was insinuated along with numerous other wine dealers when her husband was sick and could not go out (NA 910, Not. Pieter Eyloff). Arent Pietersz. was probably the brother of Jan Pietersz. Brugman, cited in the NOTES to R 30649.

BuyerBalthasar Porot int Wapen van Leijen
Buyer FamilyPorot, Balthasar
Buyer NotesThe Wapen van Leyden was a house situated on the O.Z. Achterburchwal. In 1617, it was owned by Michiel Cornelisz. de Lange, cited in the NOTES to R 21699 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 187.) Michiel Cornelisz. de Langhe, who was burgomaster Reynier Pauw's nephew by marriage, was an important linen merchant. In 1612, he sold Lambert Verhaer (cited in the NOTES to R 37037) very fine linens for the gift of the States General to the Sultan of Constantinople (N. de Roever in Oud Holland 1(1883), p.178). Balthasar Porot could possibly be Balthasar van de Perre (I), cited in the NOTES to R 8218 as Balthasar Porot.

Buyerde soon van Hinlopen
Buyer FamilyHinlopen, de soon van (Jacob Jacobsz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Jacob Jacobsz. Hinlopen (1582-1629), the son of Jacob Jacobsz. called Hinlopen (c. 1550-1613). Both were cloth merchants of South Netherlandish origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 304). The younger Hinlopen, like his father, was a prominent cloth merchant and dealer in East Indian wares (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 309). On 4 October 1618, Jacob Jacobsz. Hinlopen, former alderman, assisted by his brother Frans Jacobsz., living on the Nieuwen Dijck, was betrothed to Sara de Wael, assisted by her father Jan de Wael (I), 27, living in the Warmoesstraet (DTB 423/26). Sara de Wael (or Wale), widow of Jacob Jacobsz. II, continued her husband's business after his death. On 22 January 1630, Sara de Wael, widow of schepen Hinlopen, together with Jacob, Lyntgen, and Sara Hinlopen, all living in the same house, were invited to the wedding of Bernard de Moor and Clara van Capelle (Nederlandse Leeuw 44(1926), p. 10). The widow of Jacob Jacobsz. Hinlopen, living on the Heeregracht on the West side of the Koninck van Denemarck, paid a tax of 875 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 293vo., p. 67). The son of Jacob Jacobsz., named Jacob Jacobsen Hinlopen (one of the guests at the wedding of Bernard de Moor), married Anna Tholinx, the daughter of Dirck Tholinx, alderman, on 11 December 1642 (DTB 458/389).
