BuyerPieter Cuelenaer
Buyer FamilyCuelenaer (Colenaer, Ceulenaer), Pieter (de)
Buyer NotesPieter de Ceulenaer was a merchant from Antwerp (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 297). On 20 September 1601, Pieter de Colenaer, 28 years old, living in the Verwerijen, assisted by his swager Jaques Bulletel and his brother Augustijn de Kolenaer (of the present inventory), was betrothed to Sara Pasquier, from Antwerp, 23, assisted by her father Jan Pasquier, and her brother Jan Pasquier de jonge (DTB 409/452). Jan Pasquier (or Pasquyr) I was a cloth merchant from Antwerp, who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 12 May 1586 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). On 9 November 1604, Pieter de Ceulenaer and Sara Pasquier had their daughter Saertge baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Tijmen Jacobsz. (DTB 39/51). Tijmen Jacobsz. is probably identical with Thijmen Jacobsz. Hinlopen, a merchant and grain dealer, born in Antwerp, first mentioned in Amsterdam in 1604, and a signatory of the Remonstrant petition of 1628 (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 304 and Wagenaar, Amsterdam, p. 497). Pieter de Ceulenaer was also the godfather of Magdalena, the daughter of Pieter Beltens de oude (of R 32467) and of Levina Caluwaert, who was baptized on Sunday 17 August 1610 in the N.K. (Arch. Thys, Library of the University of Leyden, Assurantyboeck als anders of Pieter Belten, no. 120). On 27 September 1608, Pieter de Kolenaer, from Antwerp, widower of Sara Pasquier, living on the Nieuwe Dijck, was betrothed to Katharina van der Venne, from Antwerp, 26, living on the N.Z. Achterburgwal, assisted by her brother Lucas van de Venne (of R 27635) and her sister Goedelken (Kerck) (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 217). On 6 September 1609, Pieter de Kuelenaer and Katarijna van de Veene had their son Pieter baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Marija Semais (Simais), the widow of Augustijn de Cuelenaer (DTB 4/292). On 4 October 1618, Pieter and Catarina had their son Guilliam baptized in the presence of Marije Bultell, Guilliam de Ceulenaer and Jaques van de Wael (DTB 3/259). Marije Bultell, who may have been the sister of Hans Bultell of R 36477, married the Schout Sijmon van der Does in 1605 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 325). On 24 June 1621, Susanna, daughter of Pieter de Colenaer and Cataryna van de Venne, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Mr. Jan Quesnoye and Annetie Henrix, the wife of Hans Walschert (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 217). Hans Walschert (Walschaert) bought an 8-part bible for 150 f. at Orphan Chamber auction in 1613 (see the TEXT to R 805 of Montias2). On 8 February 1624, Pieter de Ceulenaer, from Antwerp, widower of Catharina van de Venne, living on the Nieuwendijck, was betrothed to Anne Boshouwers, widow of Jan Heijndricksz. Schoonevelt (12 years), living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 429/21).

BuyerAl Six
Buyer FamilySix, Al (Alix, Aeltge)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be either Alix Six I, born about 1583 in Leiden, who married, first, Nicolaes Bonnenuit and, second, Jacques Banclan, or Alix Six II, born in 1596, the daughter of Guillamme Six (the uncle of Alix Six I) and of Jeanne Wijmer, the sister of Pieter Wijmer of R 28340. Alix Six II married Adriaen Cromhout (1585-1625) on 7 June 1615. She was buried on 5 November 1647. At the time of her death, she was living in de drie Rapen in the Nieuwe Doelenstraat, Adriaen Cromhout, the son of Barthold Adriaensz. Cromhout and Aeght Hendricks Oetgens, became alderman in 1625 and director of the W.I.C. in 1622 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 365 and 459). The more likely of the two, given their ages at the time of the purchase of this lot, is Alix Six I.

BuyerLucas van de Venne
Buyer FamilyVenne, Lucas van de
Buyer NotesLucas van de Venne, born in 1573, seems to have been the brother of Pieter van de Venne I (of R 40721) (1565-1617), the inventory of whose widow was sold by the Orphan Chamber on 31 July 1623 (INVNO 1074). Lucas was living in the house of the goldsmith Alexander van der Hoeve (of R 20986), in the Nes, when he bought a 6 st. lot in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 117/27 F 868). On 24 October 1609, Luycas van de Venne, born in Antwerp, 36 years old, was betrothed to Agneta Pels, also of Antwerp. He lived on the Jan Roodenpoort. He was assisted by his great uncle Luycas van de Wal, she by her father Pieter Pels (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 218). Both Pieter Pels and his brother Hans Pels, were sugar refiners, born in Antwerp. Hans Pels spent some time in Hamburg before settling in Amsterdam, where he was first noted in 1585. He died in 1626 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 310). The brothers were associated in their refinery business with Hans Verbiest, who invested 900 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 203). On 20 December 1618, Lucas van de Venne, merchant, rented a house and a sugar refinery on the East side of the Keysersgracht from Jacob Cornelisz. for 700 f. a year (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 315). He did business not only in sugar but in indigo, tobacco and tropical lumber (S.A.C. Dudok van Heel, Duizend gulden voor een portretopdracht aan Barthololomeus van der Helst in Maandblad Amstelodamum 85(1998), p. 37). He bought goods at the sale of spices of Pieter Mercijs of 25 February 1625 (WK 5073/957). Pieter Mercijs was the late husband of Maria Florianus who, three years later, married Pieter van de Venne II. In a deposition dated 1622, Lucas van de Venne declared that he had done business for 17 years in a compagnie with Samuel Blommaert (of R 21578), Hans Vrancx (of R 20713), Hans Rombouts (of R 30032), and three other Amsterdam merchants (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 231). On 17 August 1623, Peeter, the son of Luckas van de Venne and Agneta Pieter Pelsdr., was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pieter Pels (Agneta's father) and Gooltjen (Goedelken) van de Venne (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 218). In April 1626, Lucas van de Venne had some goods sold at auction (but no art) by the Orphan Chamber. The goods were sold bij de verwers graft, over't Dolhuys. In 1631, Lucas van de Ven, living on the West side of the Keysersgracht, paid a tax of 125 f. (Kohier, fol. 300vo, p. 69). On 14 April 1638, Marten Papenbroeck, 70, and Lucas van de Venne, 60, Gillis van Schendel, 35, and Abraham van der Straten (probably of INVNO 1231), 25, testified at the request of the merchant Dionys Bailly. Van der Straten declared that he had seen, at the house of Bailly, five cases of coral pater nosters, which were likely to be sold for less than they cost (NA 696A, film 4982). The wealthy merchant Gillis van Schendel (who should not be confused with the painter of this name), from Goch, was 27 when, on 16 April 1621, assisted by Bartholomeus Bisschop (cited in R 20543), his good acquaintance, he was betrothed to Margareta de Vogelaer, 25, assisted by her cousin Balthasar Schuylenburg (the father of Frederick (of R 34735) and Ferdinand Schuylenburgh (of R 25764) (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.79). Dionys Bailly (1617-1654) was the husband of Johanna van Beringen, the sister of Catharina van Beringen, the wife of Gerrit Elias of INVNO 130 (De Navorscher 28(1878), p. 49). Van de Venne, in this deposition, underestimated his age by about five years. Marten (Martensz.) Papenbroeck, born in 1567, died in 1640. He was married to Elisabeth Jacobs Pancras on 12 February 1608. She was the daughter of Jacob Ottensz. Papenbroeck (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 267). In April 1638, Lucas van der Venne, sick in body, passed his testament. Among the heirs he designated the children of Marcus van Uffelen (cited in R 7706) (ibid.) For the insolvent inventory of Abraham van der Straten, see INVNO 1231. On 3 January 1659, shortly after his death, his inventory (INVNO 189 of R 107 of Montias1) was drawn up at the request of Pieter van der Venne II, droggist, and of Lucas's son and only child, the honorable Pieter (Lucasz.) van der Venne III. The droggist Pieter van de Venne was a deacon of the Reformed Church (WK 5073/789 of 8 November 1640). Pieter Lucasz. van der Venne commissioned a portrait of himself and of his family from Barthololomeus van der Helst in 1665, for which he initially contracted to pay the enormous sum of 1,500 f. (Dudok van Heel, op.cit. supra). On 9 May 1667, the heer Bartholomeus van der Helst, on one side, the heeren Jan de Carpentier and Ernst Klenck (cited in the TEXT of R 120 of Montias1), as guardians of the children of minor age of the late Pieter van de Venne Lucasz., on the other, came to an agreement whereby Van der Helst would be paid 460 f. The painter acknowledged having received the money (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 404).

BuyerJan de Bleu
Buyer FamilyBleu, Jan de
Buyer NotesOn 5 January 1607, Jean le Bleu, from Wesel, 27 years old, living 9 years in Amsterdam, on the Keysersgracht, assisted by his father Francois le Bleu, was betrothed to Hester Jans Verspreet, living op 't Water, accompanied by her father Hans Verspreet (DTB 412/139). By 4 November of the same year, the couple already had their son Franscois baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Fransen le Bleu (the grandfather of the child) and Annetke Verspreet (DTB 4/129). Hester Verspreet was the sister of Anthoni Verspreet of R 25596. Anneken, or Tanneken, another sister, was married to the famous book printer Hendrick Hondius, the son of Colette van der Keere (Nederlandsche Leeuw 50(1932), col. 212). Jean le Bleu was the son of Lenora Venant, the sister of Francoijs Venant de oude, and the cousin of the latter's son, the painter Francoijs Venant II of R 31217 (Oud Holland, vol. 4 (1886), p. 20 20). He was also the brother of Jacobus le Bleu, who was a student in medicine when he was betrothed in the Hague to Ermgaert Muys van Holy, widow of Nicolaes van Dijck, on 11 August 1616 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 31(1913), col. 67). On 24 August 1619, Dirck Evertsz. Paes, 28, living in Dordrecht, and Jan Boone, 27, living in Dordrecht declared at the request of Pieter van Ravesteyn that they had no knowledge of an inventory of the goods of Franchoijs le Bleu that had been deposited with Franchoijs Venant (I). Franchoijs le Bleu had appeared before the Orphan Chamber masters of Leiden and had satisfied them (NA 200, film 111). On 19 October 1619, Franchoys Venandt I declared at the request of Pieter van Ravesteyn that he had never received an inventory of the goods of Leonora Venandt, his sister and the schoonmoeder of Ravesteyn (NA 200, fol. 398, Extracten). On 15 September 1628 an inventory was taken of the goods of Francois Venant I, which had been pledged to his son, Franchoijs Venant II, in part at least because the father had borrowed 600 f. from Jean le Bleu, which loan had been guaranteed by the son (INVNO 500, R 401 of Montias1). Jean le Bleu bought bulbs at the auction sale of Pieter Pietersz. tuynman on 25 September 1626 (WK 5073/952). On 16 November 1628, Hans le Bleu, widower of Hester Verspreet, was betrothed to Cornelia van Mesen, widow of Lenaert de Beer (DTB 433/286). In the same year 1628, Cornelia van Meson, widow of Leenart de Beer, signed the Remonstrant petition. Jan le Bleu paid a tax of 120 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Warmoesstraet near the St. Janstraet (Kohier, fol. 208 vo., p. 48). On 7 August 1634, Jan le Bleu, 54, and Pieter van de Venne (II), 39, declared at the request of Jacques Sicx that they had seen a lot of molten glass (smout van glas), which had been sent from Venice. The lot was spoiled (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 19 August 1634, Jean le Bleu, merchant, as part payment of the debt he owed to Sr. Jacob Aernoutsz. van Erp, arising from a deposit of 9,066 f. 5 st. he (Van Erp) had made with the appearer (le Bleu) for the benefit of Sr. Joost Baeck (the son of Laurens Baeck of R 28932), dated 22 July 1633, ceded to Van Erp 16 vats of French wine, lying in the cellar across the Dolhuys where the Goude Keten hangs. Van Erp may sell the wine as he wishes (NA 843, fol. 656, Not. Hoogeboom). On 23 September 1634, Jacques and Anthony Verspreet, merchants, guardians over the children of Hester Verspreet, their deceased sister, in lieu and place of Daniel le Bleu, also the uncle and guardian of the children, in this capacity replacing Jean le Bleu, drogist, named Sr. Joris Francken in Antwerp to obtain 1,520 f. from Caspar Verspreet and 1,700 f. from Abraham van Hooren as well as other debts that have been transferred [to these participants] from Jean le Bleu (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). When an inventory of his goods was taken under the oversight of Cornelia van Meesen and of Jacques Verspreet (the brother of Hester, Sara, and Anneken Verspreet) on 28 April 1635, he was said to be living in 't Vergulde Paert on the Warmoesstraet (NA 695A, film 4981, INVNO 1122). He must have moved soon afterwards to the Lauriersgracht where he kept the same sign of 't Vergulde Paert when he bought prints at the sale of Jan Basse in 1637 (R 33495).

BuyerG[uillem] van Eyndhoven
Buyer FamilyEyndhoven, Guillem (Willem) van
Buyer NotesThe first name of G. van Eyndhoven is fully spelled out (as Guillem) in R 27707. On 19 April 1613, Gullame van Eyndhoven declared at the request of Elisabeth Michiels (van Harlaer, of R 31706) that he had known Jan van Valkenburgh (of R 31706), merchant in silk cloth, who had come to Amsterdam from Antwerp in 1585 and had died in 1603, leaving 8 children (Nederlandsche Leeuw 6(1944), col. 51). Guillem van Eyndhoven lived on the Batavierstraet in 1608 (R 28912). He was the father of Abraham van Eyndhoven, possibly of INVNO 945. He may be identical with Willem Jansz. from Eijndhoven, poultry buyer, who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 5 December 1596 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). This and the next three lots were said to be owed to Wes... Groenewege (?) (syn toecomende aen Wes... Groenewege).
