BuyerAnna Boschert
Buyer FamilyBoschert, Anna (Wouters)
Buyer NotesOn 27 August 1611, Jaques Boon, from Antwerp, 49, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Anna Bosschaert, widow of Abraham Adriaensz. (DTB 666/298). Five years earlier, on 24 December 1606, Paulus Bosschaert, the presumed brother of Anna Bosschaert, had been present at the baptism of Abraham, the son of Caspar van Wickevoort, van wegen Abraham Adriaensz. (who was then married to Anne Bosschaert (DTB 138/72) (see R 21502). Anna Wouters Bosschaert drew up her testament on 16 November 1624 (see the NOTES to R 27456). On 14 June 1626, Anna Bosschaert, widow of Jacques Boon, was present at the baptism of Abraham, a likewise named son of Caspar van Wickevoort (DTB 139/172). Jasper Jansz. Vickevoort I, of R 21502, appears to have remarried with Margriete Bosschaert, the daughter of Dominicus Bosschaert and the niece of Anne Bosschaert Wouters (the present buyer) at some uncertain date. From the testament passed by Anne Bosschaert, widow of Jacques Boon, on 15 November 1624, it appears that Anna Boschert (or Bosschaert) was the sister of Pauwels Woutersz. Bosschaert, pastry maker of R 27456 (NA 434, fol. 131vo, Not. P. Matthijsz., Extracten).

BuyerEgbert Wit
Buyer FamilyWit, Egbert (de)
Buyer NotesOn 19 April 1603, Egbert de Witt, hoedestoffeerder (hatstuffer), 23 years old, living on the Oude Zydsarm, no living parents, was betrothed to Anna Boudaens, from Antwerp, assisted by her aunt Claerken Boudaens (DTB 665/271). Anna Boudaens may be the daughter or other close relative of Hans Boudaen who was a witness to the contract of Hans Thijsz. de oude with Rubens (see R 27698). Another woman alos named Anna Boudaen(s), was the daughter of Elias Boudaen, diamond polisher in Antwerp, the brother of Hans Boudaen. She married Gaspar de Vogelaer, the brother of Marcus de Vogelaer, whose widow (of R 23422) was a buyer of art at auction. On other members of the Boudaen family, see also the NOTES to R 31217. On 11 June 1612, Egbert de Wit had his son Jan baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Wessel Backer (of R 21468) and Claertgen de Coster (DTB 138/133). On 15 June 1614, he had his daughter Clara baptized in the same church in the presence of Jacob de Meulen and Catelijn Ophogen (DTB 139/204). He paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 143 vo., page 33). In 1625, he was still living in the Warmoesstraet in de Hertog van Venetie when he bought books at the sale of Arnoldus Magistri Glaseri (the master of the glass house). He sold the house on 26 January 1626 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 36/5). In the inventory of Willem Selijns (of INVNO 1197), a debt to the estate due by Egbert de Wit for silk goods delivered for 1,792 f. 3 st. 10 penn. was recorded.

BuyerHans Tysz. de soon
Buyer FamilyTysz. (Thijsz), Hans (de jonge)
Buyer NotesHans Tijsz. II, born in 1592, was the son of the jeweller and merchant Hans Thijsz. I of the present inventory. Both father and son, and Hans Thijsz.'s brothers and sister, are extensively documented in Gelderblom's Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 272 and passim. After the death of his father in September 1611, Hans Thijsz., along with his brothers Augustijn (born about 1586), Anthony (born 1594) and Frans (born 1593) kept a book of accounts, probably for their guardians Hans van Wely (II of R 21219) and Denys de Maistres. The latter, a merchant born in Antwerp about 1559 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base), was the son-in-law of the important merchant Jan Calandrini from Antwerp (he married his daughter Elisabeth Calandrini in 1608). In the accounts book, numerous entries refer to Hans Thijsz. de jonge's trips to Antwerp, 'S Hertogenbosch, The Hague and Utrecht (Ontcost boeck aengaende het sterfhuys van onsen vader zaliger Johan Thys, begint 22 september 1611 in Arch. Thys, Library of the University of Leyden, no. 112A). On 25 May 1613, an entry shows that Hans paid f 4: 8:-- voor een doeck om te schilderen. He was thus at least an amateur painter. It may be he who was slated to receive lessons from Rubens according to the contract for the sale of Hans Thysz. de oude's house in Antwerp in 1610 (see the TEXT to R 589 of Montias1). However, there is no evidence that he ever received such lessons. In a notarial act of 2 July 1616, Anthony and Francoijs were cited as having received the veniam aetatis, the rights and privileges of majority age before attaining the age of 25 (Thys Archive, 112C 2)). Hans died shortly before 11 September 1619 when a servant was paid to bring him (or his remains) from a ship in Middelburg and a stone carver was given 13 f. 1 st. and 8 pen. to carve his coat-of-arms on his gravestone (Thys Archive, 112C 1). The TEXT of R 589 supplies documents that show that Dr. Anthony Thijsz., doctor in theology, at Harderwyck and later at Leyden University, was the brother of Hans Thijsz. de oude. Anthony Thijsz., who collected the proceeds of the present sale, was, as has already been said, a brother of Hans Thijsz. de jonge. He married Elisabeth Bacher, who was his cousin by marriage in 1621. When the couple had their son Joannes baptized on in the N.K. on 14 June 1622, his uncle Dr. Anthony Thysz. acted as a witness and was presumably the child's godfather (DTB 40/172). After the death of Elisabeth Bacher, he remarried with Magdalena Beltens, the sister of Pieter Beltens de jonge. On 9 June 1630, the couple had their daughter Levina baptized in the presence of Constantin l'Empereur and Joff. Constantia Coijmans (1607-1673), the wife of Magdalena's brother, Pieter Belten de jonge (R 31375). Francoijs Thijsz., the brother of Hans Thijsz. de jonge, died between 1622 (when he last mentioned in the Thys archive) and 1634 when his name was missing from among the heirs of Anthony Thijsz. who died in that year. After the death of Anthony Thijsz., Magdalena Pieters remarried with his cousin Christoffel Thijsz., the son of Francoijs Thijsz., who in turn had been the brother of Hans Thijsz. de oude. On 19 August 1635, Christoffel Thijs and Magdalena Beltens had their son Cristoffel baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Pieter Beltens (DTB 41/395). On 5 January 1639, Christoffel Thijsz. and Pieter Belten de jonge sold Rembrandt a house on the St.Anthonijbreestraet in which the painter was to live for many years (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 158. Strauss wrongly states that Christoffel Thijsz. was the brother of Dr. Anthony Thijsz. This seems to confuse the doctor in theology with his nephew Anthony Thijsz., who in any case was the cousin, not the brother, of Christoffel). Hans Thijsz. de jonge bought lots at the Claes Rauwart sale of 1612 (when he was very young, perhaps 15 or less) and at the present sale. He should not be confused with Jan Thys, who bought a lot at the sale of Albert Martsen in 1621.

Buyerprobably sold for cash. [Crossed out: Cornelis Harmensz. in Herodes in de Warmoesstraet]
Buyer FamilyHarmensz., Cornelis (van Limburch)
Buyer NotesOn 14 September 1623, Wynant Hermensz., cramer, sold (scheldt kwijdt) to Cornelis Hermansz. van Limburch, his schoonsoon, a house called de witte arent, where the sign Herodes now hangs, in the Warmoesstraet. Elsewhere in the same source Cornelis Hermensz. is called kramer (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 35/5). In 1631, the widow of Cornelis Harmansz. van Limborg, living in the Warmoesstraet, paid a tax of 60 f. (Kohier, fol. 129vo, p. 30). Cornelis Hermansz. was the brother of Elisabeth Hermans van Limburgh who was married to Coenraedt Willemsz. van Ceulen of INVNO 248. After his death, she remarried with Jan Jansz. Dorhout. After the death of Elisabeth Hermans, Dorhout remarried with Annetge Jans Tiers, the widow of Jan Thievaert of R 20955. The portrait of Cornelis Hermansz. is recorded in INVNO 248 (R 5907). Herman van Limburgh, who signed the merchants' petition of 1645 calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622, was probably the son of Cornelis Hermansz. (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 89). Another individual named Cornelis Hermansz. (probably not our buyer in view of the address in the Warmoesstraat cited above) was a sworn broker who was said to be 73 years old in a deposition of 10 June 1638 (NA 867, fol. 146vo-147).

BuyerJan de Bisschop
Buyer FamilyBisschop, Jan (Philipsz. ?) de
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be the merchant Jan Philipsz. de Bisschop (1549-1623). son of Philips Arents de Bisschop (1520-1567) and of Baefgen Oloffsdr. (1527-1573). In an act of division of the estate of Philips de Bisschop, dated 15 September 1619, Jan Philipsz. de Bisschop signed Jan de Bisschop, the name that he was usually known by (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 147). The other signatories and heirs of Philips de Bisschop were: Willem Claesz., widower of Trijntjen Philips de Bisschop; Thys Pietersz., widower of Maria Philips de Bisschop; Rem Egbertsz. de Bisschop (the famous Remonstrant activist); and Anna Pieters (NA 200, fol. 332, film 111). Thijs Pietersz.'s family name was Schrijver. He was born in 1548 and buried in the N.K. on 2 May 1621. He was a merchant living on the Dam in de Engelsche dogge (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 256). In 1590, Jan de Bisschop de oude (probably identical with Jan Philips de Bisschop) got into a complicated dispute with Jan Pietersz. de Wit, which the Kerkeraad of the Reformed Church in Amsterdam attempted to compose. The affair was finally submitted to arbitration (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, Hilversum, p. 349). Jan Philipsz. was the brother, not only of Trijntjen Philips and of Maria Philips, cited above, but also of Lysbeth Philips de Bisschop who was married to the famous Remonstrant Rem Egbertsz. Bisschop. Jan Philipsz. married 1) in April 1579 Emmetge Dircksdr. and 2) in July 1586 Lysbeth Hermansdr. (who died in 1591), widow of Jan Hendricksz. Coesvelt (DTB 404/164). Dirck de Bisschop was a son from his first marriage, Herman and Elisabeth de Bisschop from his second. In 1588, Jan de Bisschop and Lysbet Harmens had their son Harmen baptized in the O.K. (DTB 1/360) (On Harmen de Bisschop, see below). Jan de Bischop was originally a merchant, but, after 1578, he became a collector of taxes on staple goods (accijnmeester). In 1585, he was taxed 15 f. He invested 18,000 f. in V.O.C. shares in the first subscription of 1602 issued by the Amsterdam Kamer of the V.O.C. and 300 f. in V.O.C. shares issued by the Enkhuizen Kamer. In 1612, he invested another 18,000 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 158 and 259, and unpublished information on subscriptions in Enkhuizen supplied by Roelof van Gelder). He was captain of a company in 1599 (of which the Lieutenant was Pieter Egbertsz. Vinck), in which he was portrayed by Aert Pietersz. (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, pp. 242-3). When he died on 29 November 1623, leaving a fortune of 120,000 f., he was said to be living on the Singel, next to the Jan Roodenpoort, in de Witte Lely (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 146). On 17 July 1630, Dirck de Bisschop declared that he had received, to his full contentment, out of the goods left by his late father Jan de Bisschop, in his life time a member of the Raad of Amsterdam, two thirds of a house on the Conincxgracht (ex-Singel), near the Jan Roodenpoort, valued at 14,000 f. (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). His other son, Herman (of R 20596),was betrothed to Aaltje Adriaans on 12 September 1624. She was the daughter of the Remonstrant Adriaen Jacobsz. (van Noordt) (of R 21331) and of Griet Jans (DTB 6701/1). He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. The grandson of Jan de Bisschop, Jan de Bisschop II, was a well-known draftsman and engraver. On Jan de Bisschop I, see I. van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 67(1975), p. 23. Jan de Bisschop should not be confused with Jan Bisschop, the brother of Paul Bisschop of R 29011.

BuyerFranchoys Penijn
ProvenanceThis lot is probably identical with the Susanna in the inventory of Sara Lodewycx (INVNO 1016).
Buyer FamilyPenijn, Franchoys (de) (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably Francoijs de Penijn de jonge, apothecary, who was 36 years old on 23 February 1602 when he was betrothed to Sara Lodewijcks from Antwerp, 26. He was assisted by his father Francois Penijn (I) and she by her niece Esther le Clercq (DTB 410/36). On 30 March 1603, Francois Penijn, apothecary, and Saerre Loedewicksdr. had their son Francoijs (III) baptized in the presence of Pieter Penijn and Susanna Savaet (DTB 4/162). The buyer was probably the individual of that name who assisted Josina Pieters de Penijn in her betrothal to Abraham van Lovelde (Loosvelt) on 21 May 1611 (R 19997). On 1 March 1614, the sons of Hans Thysz. de oude (of R 31584) paid Francoys Penyn, apothecary, according to his bill, 5 f. 16 st. (Arch. Thys, Library of University of Leyden, no. 112A). Elias in his Vroedschap van Amsterdam states that the apothecary Francoijs (de) Penijn, who was born in 1605 as the son of Guilliaem de Penijn, apothecary, and of Cornelia Verspreet, married Maria de Vicq (or Vick) on 29 January 1630 (p.580). According to Elias, he became inspector of the Collegium Medicinum. If this is accurate, this Francoijs Penijn (IV) must be distinct from Francoijs Penijn II who was baptized in 1603 as the son of Francoijs Penijn I and Sara Lodewijcks. Maria de Vicq was the sister of Fancois de Vicq, who married Aerlant Verhoutert, the sister of Jan Gerritsz. Verhoutert of INVNO 1208 (Elias, ibid.) Maria died before 25 April 1636 when Fransoijs Penijn (IV) was said to be the widower of Maria de Vick, who left a son Franck of major age and a daughter named Cornelia of minor age (NA 695A, omslag 71, fol.407). Susanna Savaet is probably related to Samuel Savat of R 26634. Both Franchoijs de Penijn II (?) and Guilhelmus de Penyn (the father of Francoijs Penijn IV?), along with a number of doctors in medicine, signed a petition to the Amsterdam Council in 1618 requesting payment for certain services rendered to the city (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 41(1947), pp. 62-3). On 30 May 1625, Franchoijs de Penijn II and Sara Lodewycx passed their testament (NA 652, fol. 1). On 30 May 1628, an inventory was taken in the Orphan Chamber of the goods of the late Sara Lodewycx, widow of Francois de Penij (II), apothecary, at the request of and under the supervision of Sr. Anthonis Tijsz., the guardian appointed by the Orphan Chamber over Augustijn Penij, the child of minor age of Franchoijs Penij, together with Johannes Tivart de jonge, as husband and guardian of Sara Penij (WK 5073/968, INVNO 1016). On 24 September of the same year, Jan Tyvart (de jonge) and Anthoni Tysz. brought in 4,000 f. in obligations, plus some other assets, for the benefit of Augustyn, 16 years old, the son of Francois de Penyn (II) (5073/789). Jan Tyvart (or Thivaert) de jonge (III), the brother of Henri Tivaert of INVNO 524, was the son-in-law of Franchoijs de Penijn II (the husband of his daughter Sara). He was the son of the sugar refiner and art dealer Jan Tivaert (II) of R 20955. On 2 August 1629, Johannis Tijvert and Sara Fransen had their son Joannis baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Jan Pouwelsz. and Maria Josina de Penijn (DTB 6/246). Maria Josina de Penijn was the daughter of Franchoijs de Penijn II. Anthony Thijsz., who was the son of Hans Tysz. de oude, the owner of the goods sold, was betrothed to Magdalena Pieters Belten, the daughter of Pieter Belten de oude, on 22 February 1627 (see R 879 of Montias1). In 1631, the heirs of Francois Penijn I, living on the North side of the Brestraet, paid a tax of 60 f. (Kohier, fol. 157vo, p. 36).

BuyerLourens Dubbelworst
Buyer FamilyDubbelworst, Lourens
Buyer NotesOn 12 December 1612, Laurens Dubbelsworst was appointed guardian over the two minor children of the book seller Jacob Pietersz. Paedts. He was apparently the cousin (neve) of these children (WK 5073/513). On 15 December 1618, Laurens Dubbel Voorst, with a procuration from Steven van Helsingen, raedsheer of Utrecht, in the name of the heirs of Pieter Snoeck (of R 31202) and of Jannetje Jans In 1631, Lourens Dubbel de Worst paid a tax of 150 f., at which time he lived in the Soutsteech (Kohier, fol. 281, p. 64). In R 23698, his name is spelled Dubbeldworst. On 28 March 1635, Sr. Lauren Dubbel Worst and Claes Barenck van Danckers, both merchants, acknowledged receiving from Abraham Karmensen Smalt 104 rijcksdaelders, as the remnant of a larger sum that had been lent to the bourgomasters of Hasselt (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 3 May 1637, dr. Jacobus Laurentius, bridegroom-to-be, assisted by the eersame Laurens Dubbelworst, his father, Jacobje Gerrits van Santen, his mother, Pieter Laurensz., his brother, and Jacob Jorisz. van Blijsen (?), on one side, and the eerbare Eetge Claes, assisted by Trijntgen van Neck, her mother, Annetge Dirx, her grandmother, Dirck van Neck, her uncle, Lysbeth Thomasdr., her godmother, Thomas Pietersz. van Schevelen, her neef and guardian, signed a marriage contract (NA 479B, film 6479, fol. 138). Dr. Jacobus Laurentius, the son of Laurens Dubbelworst, should not be confused with the predikant of the same name (of R 23781), who was the son of Laurens Jacobsz., book publisher who died in 1603. Dirck van Neck is identical with Dirck Jochemsz. van Neck, the son of Annetge Dircks, of R 32156, who was R.C. Indeed the van Neck family is likely to have been R.C. (as was perhaps also the Dobbelworst family). Jacobje Gerrits van Santen, the mother of the forthcoming bride, may have been the daughter of Gerrit van Santen of R 26494. On 11 December 1648, Cesar de Hage declared at the request of Johannes Molenaer, artist painter, that he had lived in the house of Laurens Dubbeldewoerst, next to Molenaer. The landlord (Dubbelworst ?) had promised him (de Hage) a rebate of 12 gulden a week because of the trouble occasioned by the lifting (vijselwerck) of the house (Bredius in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p. 297). Laurens Dobbelworst (perhaps the son of the buyer) took some pictures by the painter Isaack Luttichuys as collateral for a loan of 793 f. on 19 October 1668 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1300.) The painter Nicolaes Dubbelworst, who made a deposition on 18 July 1633, at which time he was said to be 26 (with the painters Bartolomeus Breenbergh, 32, and Albert Nachtglas, 30) may also have been related to the buyer. All three of the deponents had been in Rome with Jan (Johannes) Bossaert (Bosschaert) of Middelburg, when the latter had been married to Kerobine Lucine, who was said to be a well-known whore (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 76(1984), p. 35). The name Dubbelworst presumably comes from the Dubbele Worststeeg on the N.Z. Voorburgwal near the Deventer Houtmarkt. This path ws formerly called Stans Claeszsteeg (Dudok van Heel, Genealogical notes).
