Buyer FamilyThe husband of Giertje Ghysberts
Buyer NotesThe buyer seems to have been the husband of Giertje Ghysberts, the owner of the goods sold. She was apparently the sister of Tjebbe Gysbertsz. Popta, the son of Gijsbert Tjebbesz. Popta (1585-1636). Gijsbert Tjebbesz. Popta (1585-1636) was first married to Lijsbeth Gerrits Southolm. Tjebbe Gysbertsz. Popta (Tjebbe Popta II) was probably his son. Another son of Gijsbert Tjebbesz., named Gerrit Gijsbertsz. Popta, first drew up his testament in July 1635 in Utrecht and passed his second testament in Amsterdam on 3 July 1636 (NA 315, fol. 11, Not. F. van Bancken). On 19 July 1635, Tjebbe Gysbertsz. Popta drew his first known testament. He bequeathed to Jacob Jacobsz. Seeu 700 f., and to the poor of the Reformed religion, 150 f. He named as his universal heir Gerrit Gysbertsz. and Marritje Gysberts Popta, his brother and sister, or their children, by substitution, in case of their death. In case of their death, the inheritance would accrue to his father Gysbert Tjebbesz. Popta (NA 642, film 4953). All three were the children of the first marriage of Gijsbert Tjebbesz. Popta, with Lijsbeth Gerrits Southolm. Gijsbert Tjebbesz. was a grain dealer and insurer, first in Haarlingen, then in Amsterdam where he lived, in 1618, on the Nieuwen Dijck in de Groene Vijffhoeck (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 312). Tjebbe Gysbertsz. made another testament on 25 May 1636 in which he left his grandfather by marriage (behoude grootvader) Jacob Jacobsz. Seeu 3,000 f. and to the latter's wife Anna Tonis, 1,000 f., and to Jan Thyssen Buys, binnenvader of the Tuchthuys, 800 f. (NA 642, film 4953, fol. 171). In a third testament, passed on 7(?) September 1636, he left 1,000 f. to the poor of the Refomed Religion, 4,000 f. to Jacob Jacobsz. Seeuw, 1,200 f. to Willem Jansz. carpenter, and named his sister Maria Ghysberts Popta heiress for half his assets (NA 642, film 4953, fol. 236). Gijsbert Popta's second marriage with Dieuwertge Michiels Blaeuw yielded a son named Michiel Popta (baptized 19 May 1620) who became very wealthy (Regent of the Gasthuis in 1646, Heemraad of the Nieuwer-Amstel in 1646, captain of the militia in 1667.) He married Catharina Hinlopen, daughter of Jacob Jacobsz. Hinlopen and of Sara de Wale on 22 April 1642 (Elias, op.cit. p. 312). On 17 June 1650, he signed an agreement with 25 other creditors of Cornelis van Bruegel (DTB 5072/872).

BuyerHans Rem
Buyer FamilyRem, Hans
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a painter, born in Antwerp ca.1567, active in Amsterdam after 22 April 1594 when he became a poorter of the city (Obreens archief, 2(1878-1880), p. 274). He was a landscape and marine painter (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, pp. 83, 85). He was one of the heirs of the hoedstoffeerder (hatmaker) Jacques van Hanswyck (of INVNO 781) in 1599 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 372). He married Sibille van der Hoeven, the aunt of Valerius van der Hoeven of R 20019 (ibid.). He lived near the St. Anthonisbreestraet and the St. Anthonissluijs in a house which he had bought in 1618 (but apparently already lived in in 1607 when he bought a lot in the sale of Gillis van Campen). On 10 March 1620, he said he was 53 years old in a deposition concerning an apprentice named Gerrit Jorisz. op Gelder, presently living in Bremen, who, when he was young, had once been apprenticed to him (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 357.) He passed his testament on 29 April 1620 (Briels, ibid.)

BuyerTiet Gysberts
Buyer FamilyGysberts, Tiet
Buyer NotesOn 18 May 1594, Tiet Gijsbertsdr. assessed the goods of the late Anna le Febre, wife of Anthonis Gailliaert (of INVNO 662). In this document (NA 23, fol. 52), she was described as an uitdraagster. She was married to Captain Jan Jacobsz. Fortuyn, widower of Elsge Wichersdr., who died in 1606 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 355 and R 29635.) In 1609, the Orphan Chamber held several sales at her request, in one of which the proceeds were to be paid to her son Jacob Jansz. Fortuyn (of R 29635). She owned a house on the St. Jansstraat on the O.Z., in which some of these sales were held (e.g. 2 October 1609, WK 5073/966). She seems to have bought another house on the same street on 7 May 1618 from the heirs of Pieter Segers. She was the mother of Dirckjen Jans who was betrothed to Pieter Jansz. Blauhaen or Blauhelm of R 37242. She may also have been the sister of Giertje Ghysberts, whose goods were sold on this occasion. She apparently died before 1631 when her heirs, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, paid a tax of 250 f. (Kohier, fol. 174vo, p. 40).
