BuyerMelchior Bouwer
Buyer FamilyBouwer, Melchior
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Dr. Melchior Bouwer, 1582-1626, lived on the Keysersgracht in 1621 bij de Tulp. He was a rechtsgeleerde in The Hague in 1609 and secretary of Amsterdam from 1611 to 1626. He was the grandson of Arent Bouwer (I) (1520-1585) and the son of Hillebrand Bouwer (buried in 1588) and Lijsbeth Pieters Reynst, who died in 1636 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 413). He was the nephew of Hans Bouwer I of INVNO 537 and the cousin of Hans Bouwer II of R 28879. He was betrothed to Trijntge Lucasdr. Rotgans on 11 April 1609 (DTB 414/33). He was the nephew of Maria (or Maritge) Bouwer, who married Syvert Pietersz. Sem of R 27834. Lysbeth Bouwers of the present inventory seems to have been his grand- aunt, the sister of Arent Bouwer. Hans Bouwer I, from whom he inherited a number of books (R 443 of Montias1), was his uncle. On 20 April 1620, Mr. Melchior Bouwer, secretaris, and his brother Arent Bouwer (II) sold the house de Spijcker on the Warmoesstraet to their uncle Syvert Pietersz. Sem (J.G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat, 1968, p. 32/1). After the death of Melchior's wife Trijntgen Lucas in 1625, Syvert Pietersz. Sem, who was married to Maritge Bouwer, was named guardian over his children (WK 5073/513, fol. 32). On 28 August 1625, Abraham Anthonisz (of R 20033), holder of a special procuation from Mr. Melchior Bouwer, assisted by the Notary Willem Cluyt, issued on 28 April 1625, under the supervision of Arent Bouwer (II), the brother, and Syvert Pietersz. Sem, the uncle by marriage of Melchior Bouwer, declared that the five children of the late Melchior Bouwer (ranging in age from Neeltge, 15, to Hillebrant, 6) with Tryntgen Lucas were entitled to 1,644 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). On a sale held at the request of Arent Bouwer II, see INVNO 935. On 22 July 1631, Jacob Lucasz. Rotgans (the brother of Tryntgen Lucas and Lucas Jacobsz. Rotgans II of R 24924) and Arent Bouwer appeared before notary Sybrand Cornelissen as uncles on their mother's side of the children of Trijntgen (Lucas) van Hagen (alias Rotgans), procreated by Melchjor Bouwer. Reference was made to the sterfhuis of Weijntje van Hagen (who was the mother of Trijntje Lucas) (NA 643). On the inventory of Trijntje Lucas Rotgans, see INVNO 824. On 2 March 1637, the honorable Willem van Warmont (probably of R 29526) declared having read the codicil of the will of Arent Bouwer Hillebrantsz. (II) in which he was named co-guardian of the children of Melchior Bouwer. He declined the responsibility, naming Hugo van Groenewegen in his place (NA 598, fol. 127, Not. Lamberti). On 6 April 1637, Cornelia Bouwers, the daughter left by the late Melchior Bouwer, with the assistance of Hendrick Spierincx, her bridegroom and guardian, gave a procuration to Adam Bessels (of R 35041), her neve, to settle differences with Cornelis Gaillart (II) (of R 35231) (NA 409, film 4787, Not. Jacob Jacobsz.)

BuyerMaritge Bouwers
Buyer FamilyBouwers, Maritge
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Maria Bouwer (1566-1635), the aunt of Hans Bouwer II of R 28879 and of Melchior Bouwer of R 27856. She was betrothed to Sijvert Pietersz. Sem, widower of Giert Sijmons, assisted by his uncle Jacob Jacobsz. Sem, on 1 September 1582. She was assisted by her parents Arent Bouwer and Neeltge Hillebrants (DTB 402/127.) On 11 March 1636, Ysbrant Hem (of R 28963) and Heyndrick Jansz. de Jonghe, as testamenteurs of Maria Bouwers, widow of Syvert Pietersz. Sem, presented to the Orphan Chamber the inventory of the goods she had left. They declared that Tryntge Barchmans Dob was the only daughter of Helena Bouwers, the sister of Maria Bouwers, who was presently the wife of Hendrick Jansz. Os (WK 5073/789, fol. 19). On the death inventory of Maria (or Maritge) Bouwer, see INVNO 402. The owner of the goods sold, Lysbeth Bouwers may have been the aunt of Maritge Bouwers, the sister of Arent Hendricksz. Bouwer and of Hans Bouwer II of R 28879.

BuyerJoost Duyt
Buyer FamilyDuyt, Joost
Buyer NotesOn 2 August 1586, Joost Willemsz. Duyt, 23 years old, living in the Slijckstraet, was betrothed to Marie Reyersdr., 24, living in the Oude Bagijnhof (DTB 404/172). After the death of his first wife, he remarried with Geertje Jans (betrothal on 17 April 1614) (DTB 418/45). It is not clear whether he is identical with the individual named Joost Duyt who paid a tax of 2 f. in 1585, at which time he was living on the West side of the Nyeuwendijck (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 125.) He would only have been 22 at that time. In 1606, Joost Willemsz. Duyt, living on the Zedyck, in the Lelyen Krans, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 2 f. 7 st. His wife Mary Rijnes (not Reyers, as in the betrothal document) bought lots for the same amount (GAA, 133/24 F 968 and 133/29 F 969.) He was buried on 5 March 1624, coming from the Pieckerplaets (DTB 1054/100).

BuyerBarber Jacobs
Buyer FamilyJacobs, Barber
Buyer NotesThe buyer, who was the mother of the painter Pieter Lastman, was an uitdraagster (active from 1591 until her death in 1624). She was born in 1549. On 3 May 1572, she married Pieter Zegersz., who at this time was bode of the Weeskamer. Both were Roman Catholic. After the Alteratie, in 1578, he was removed from his office because he persisted in his adherence to Roman Catholicism. He died of the plague in 1603 (S. Dudok van Heel, Waar waren de Amsterdamse Katholieken in de zomer van 1585, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 77(1985), 39). Barber Jacobs and Pieter Zegersz. were the parents of the painters Claes and Pieter Lastman and of the goldsmith Seger Pietersz. and of Jacob Pietersz. Hardingh. On 2 May 1625, Seger Pietersz. and Willem Arentsz. de Lang, painter, were named co-guardians over the goods to which the children of Jacob Pietersz. Hardingh were entitled. These children were said to be the grandchildren of Barbara Jacobs. Willem Arentsz. de Lange, born in Amsterdam in 1595, was the grandson of Pieter Aertsen and the son of Aert Pietersz. He may be identical with the painter Lange Willem (R 47524, 7763 and 7764). He is almost certainly identical with the painter Willem Arentsz., to whom a painting was attributed in R 6761. Willem Arentsz. de Lange married Aeltje Huyberts in April 1616 (Oud Holland 7(1889), pp. 10 and 27). After the death of Willem Arentsz. (who was buried on 5 March 1626), the Orphan Chamber appointed Barent Heyndricksz., the uncle of the children, in his stead (WK 5073/513, fol. 33vo.) In 1606, Pieter Arentsz. de Vries (the brother of Willem Arentsz. de Lange ?) was living in the house of Barber Jacobs, the Gulden Cop on the St. Jansstraet, when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 57/27 F 450). On 23 November 1634, a final division of the estate of Barber Jacobs took place (after the death of Jacob Pietersz. Hardingh, the son of Pieter Segersz. and Barber Jacobs). Seger Pietersz., goldsmith, Jacob Jacobsz. Hardingh, and Theunis Roeloffsz., as husband and guardian of Weijntje Jacobs, together with Hendrick Voocht, guardian of Cent [Jacobsz.], and Annette Jacobs, all children of the late Jacob Pietersz. (Hardingh), grandchildren of Pieter Segersz. and Barber Jacobs, heirs of the properties restricted by fidei commissie of their respective brothers and uncles Dirck Pietersz. and Claes Pietersz., as also by Agnieta Pieters, wife of Franchois Venant (of R 31217), their sister and the aunt of the resp. father and mother, on one side; and Franchois Venant, widower of Agnietie Pieters, ... on the other, and declared that the value of the inventory left by Barber Jacobs, who was the beneficiary of the usufruct of the estate of her husband, Pieter Segersz., amounted to 27,008 f. 8 st. 9 pen. Of this sum, Seger Pietersz. was allotted 1,600 f., the children of Jacob Pietersz. 1,600 f., the children of Jacob Pietersz. 1,600 f., Pieter Lastman, 900 f., and Claes Lastman 600 f. (NA 597, fol. 1, Not. Lamberti). On 11 January 1636, Theunis Roeloffsz., smith, husband of Weyntje Jacobs, daughter of the late Jacob Pietersz. (Hardingh) acknowledged a debt to Seger Pietersz., goldsmith, the uncle of his wife, for 400 f. The rents from the house the Antyck Schaer would be paid in compensation to Seger Pietersz. (see also the NOTES to R 32330) (NA 597, fol. 213, Not. Lamberti).

Buyereadem [Gravin] [crossed out: Helena Bouwers]
Buyer FamilyBouwers, Helena
Buyer NotesOn the buyer, de Graeffin, see R 20362. Helena Bouwers was the wife of Burchman Claesz Dob of INVNO 695. On 14 March 1587, Burchman Claesz. Dob (not Pek as in DTB file), living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by Machtelt Bouwer, his mother, was betrothed to Helena Bouwers, widow of Marten ten Berch (II) (the son of Marten ten Berch I and Metge Hans Kint), assisted by her mother Neeltge Hillebrants (DTB 404/246). Marten ten Berch II died in 1586. It was probably his father Marten ten Berch I who paid the high tax of 80 f. in 1585 (living in the Warmoesstraet) (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 59). Neeltge Hillebrants was the wife of Arent Hendricksz. Bouwer, a very wealthy merchant in the Warmoesstraet (1520-1585). Helena Bouwer was the sister of Maritge Bouwer of R 27665, who married Syvert Pietersz. Sem of INVNO 402; of Ytgen Bouwer, who married Jacob Willemsz. Warmont, the father of Willem Jacobsz. Warmont of R 29526; of Hendrick Bouwer, who married Catherine ten Berch; of Hillebrand Bouwer, the father of Melchior Bouwer of R 27856; and of Hans Bouwer I of INVNO 537. She was probably the niece of Lysbeth Bouwer, the owner of the goods sold (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 413). Catherine ten Berch was a regent of the Leprozenhuis painted in a group portrait by Wernert van den Valckert. On 11 March 1636, Ysbrant Hem (of R 28963) and Hendrick Jansz. de Jonghe declared before the Orphan Chamber that Helena Bouwers, the sister of Maria Bouwers was presently the wife of Gerrit Jansz. Os (WK 5073/789, fol. 19). Already on 22 March 1619, Gerrit Jansz. Osch and his wife Helena Bouwers had sold a house on the Warmoesstraat to their brother-in-law Syvert Pietersz. Sem (the husband of Maritge Bouwers of INVNO 402) (J.G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968, p. 32/1).
