BuyerMr. Jan Pietersz.
Buyer FamilyPietersz., Mr. Jan (Swellinck, Swellingh)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, as Bredius has suggested, is almost surely the organist and composer Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck (1562-1621). In 1604, he was called Mr. Jan Pietersz. organist in the accounts of the city. He probably was born in Overijssel, the son of Mr. Pieter, organist, and of Elsjen Jans. He was the brother of the painter Gerrit Pietersz. (Swellinck)., baptized on 1 November 1566 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.278). On 10 August 1602, Mr. Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck, organist, and Claesgen Dircx, his wife, passed their testament, naming Dirck, Pieter, IJsbrant, Jan and Elsgen, their two children and grandchildren, as universal heirs (Oud Holland 38(1920), pp. 127-8). Pieter Jansz. Sweelinck was the buyer at R 20550. (For other details of Jan Pietersz.'s biography, see Oud Holland 3(1885), pp. 282-284.) In 1631, the widow of Mr. Jan Pietersz. organist, paid a tax of 150 f., at which time she lived on the Koestraet (Kohier, fol. 149 vo., p. 35.)

Buyer FamilyReyersz., Cornelis
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a goldsmith. On 31 September 1602, he signed a petition by the goldsmiths' guild to the burgomasters requesting a change in a special contribution tax (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 69(1929), p. 606). It may be his widow, Annetgien Heyndrix, who was betrothed to the painter Jacques Savery II on 7 May 1622 (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 75). Annetgien Heyndrix was apparently the daughter of Hendrick van Dale (perhaps of R 30168). On 22 September 1623, Jacques Savry, as husband and guardian of Annetie Henricks and heir of Henrik van Dale, sold a grave in the Nieuwe Kerck (ibid. p. 76).

BuyerPieter Jan Meeusz.
Buyer FamilyMeeusz., Pieter Jan
Buyer NotesPieter Jan Meeusz. was born about 1564 (see the document of 1635 below). When Theodorus Tulp, the son of the famous Dr. Tulp, was betrothed to Anna Burgh (1624-1672), the daughter of Albert Coenradtsz. Burgh, burgomaster, and of Anna Wolphaerts van Diemen, Pieter Jan Meusz. was said to be his uncle. She was also assisted by her uncle Nicolaes Balestel (II) (of R 36475) (pre-nuptial contract, 8 April 1650, NA 988, act no. 58, Not. J. Bosch). Anna Wolphaerts van Diemen was the sister of Christina Wolphaerts van Diemen who was married to Nicolaes Balestel II. On 7 June 1600, Pieter Jan Meusz., Claes Garbrantsz. Pancras and Jan Garbrantsz. Pancras, merchants and citizens of Amsterdam, freighted a ship, De Witte Valck, to St. Uvis to ship salt to Dantzig, Koningsberg, and Riga (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 271). Pieter Jan Meuwissen (also spelled Mieuwissen), merchant in Amsterdam, freighted ships to La Rochelle on 18 March 1603 and 14 July 1605 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), pp. 114 and 255). In 1615, Pieter Jan Mieussen was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 299). Pieter Meeusz. was probably the son of Jan Meeusz., also a merchant, who freighted a ship to Koenigsberg in 1604 (ibid. p. 204). He may be identical with Pieter Meeusz. whose daughter Maritgen was baptized in the Lutheran Church on 15 January 1623 in the presence of Reynier Jansz. and Giertgen(?) Lucas (DTB 138/340). On 11 May 1622, Pieter Jan Meeusz. was named guardian over the children of Willem Jonckheijn, along with Hendrick Reynst (of R 28571) (WK 5073/513, fol. 4). In 1631, Pieter Jansz. Meusz., living on the N.Z. Wester Achterburchwal, paid a tax of 125 f. (Kohier, fol. 291, p. 66). Some time in the 1620's (but before 1626), Pieter Jan Meeusz. was cited as one of the many blood relatives of the Notary Willem Cluyt and of his mother (unnamed but presumably Joostgen van Teylingen) who were invited to a funeral (perhaps that of onse zal. moeder Joostgen van Teylingen). The list of blood relatives included the burgomaster Franck Oetgens, Barthelt Croomhout, Dirck Hasselt, Hendrick Cromhout (of R 20492), Joan van Schoterbosch (former alderman of Haarlem), Jan van Schoterbosch van Overrijn, and Willem van Schoterbosch, rentmeester, Joan Witsen (of R 36672), Vincent Benninck, Albert Velecaer (of R 20251), Hans Jacobsz. Coeckebacker, Albert Coenradsz., former alderman, Dirck Geurtsz. van Beuningen (of R 21904), Anthony Oetgens, alderman, Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel (of R 27584), Dirck Corver (of R 23516), Claes Gaeff, Reynier van Neck (city secretary), Volckert Coornhert (of R 7628), Reynier Reael, Cornelis Michelsz. Blaeu, Claes Cornelisz. Opsy, Jacob van Alckemade, Frans van Alckemade, Frans Jacobsz. Hinlopen, Balthasar Jansz. (of R 20078), Reynier Pauw (probably Adriaensz.), Matheus van Alewijn (of R 25399), Pieter Strijcker (subst. schout), Willem Dommer, Hans Luycasz., Michiel Pauw, former alderman, Gerrit Schaep, alderman, Consul Pauw (probably Adriaen), Jacob Pauw, Dr. Pieter Pauw (the botanist) and a few other sons of distinguished families (NA 373, no date, but before 22 June 1627 when Claes Gaeff was buried). Jacob van Alckemade, married to Agatha Willems, was the father of Simon van Alckemade, cited in the NOTES to R 23602. He was a soap boiler in 't Vergulde Hoeffyser (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 235). On 13 March 1635, Cornelis Mertsen Pronck (of R 32466), 61, and Pieter Jan Meuwessen, 71, both merchants, declared at the request of Jan Webster that, last February, the broker Esaias de la Tombe (brother of Salomon de la Tombe of R 30861) had come across the producent (Jan Webster) and had offered to sell him 25 bales of pepper at 21 groot the pound, payable in three months (NA 695A, omslag 65, fol. 36, Not. Jan Warnaerts).

BuyerJoris Claesz. goutsmith
Buyer FamilyClaesz., Joris
Buyer NotesOn 8 November 1603, Joris Claesz., from Brussels, goldsmith, 23 years old, having lived 13 years in the Kalverstraet, no living parents, was betrothed to Jacomyntje Vermeulen, from Antwerp, 29, living in the Warmoesstraet, no living parents. The goldsmith Joris Claesz. was established in Amsterdam since 1603 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 67). He lived by de Lange Brug in 1607 (R 30664). He apparently was still alive on 16 April 1621, when Annetje Henricx, wife of Pauwels Boelisz. in the Wisselbank, 44, and Jacomyntgen Vermeulen, wife of Joris Claesz. goldsmith, 47. made a deposition at the request of Annetgen Andries van Denmarcklaen (NA 653A, film 648). After the death of Annetgen Henricx, the Orphan Chamber named Nicolaes Coques (of R 20336) as guardian over the children of Pauwels Boelisz. on 14 October 1625 (WK 5073/513, fol. 41).

BuyerWillem Jansz. Kan [crossed out: Mr. Jan Pietersz.]
Buyer FamilyKan (Can, Caen, Kaen), Willem Jansz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of Jan Kaen who set up a company for warehousing (pakken) in 1610. This Jan Kaen cannot be identical with Jan Andriesz. Kaen (of INVNO 710) who died in or before 1614, since the latter was present at the betrothal of his son Willem Jansz. (broker) in 1617 (see below). The father of Willem Jansz. Kan was probably Jan Jacobsz. Kan of R 27297. The son was to join the company in case there was so much business the three original founders could not handle it (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 69(1929), p. 682). On 1 July 1617, Willem Jansz. Kan, from Leyden, packer (warehouse man), 21 years old, assisted by his father Jan Caen, living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Engeltjen Cornelis, 20, assisted by her mother Trijn Jaricx (DTB 421/246). On 23 August 1617, Jan Pietersz. Out, 28, Willem Jansz. Caen, warehouse man (packer), 21, Hans Verbiest (cited in the NOTES to R 27635), 44, Reymont Reynders, 48, and Thomas Robertsz., 43, all sworn brokers, testified about the prices for which they sold certain goods (mascarade etc..) (NA 381, film 6413, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) The first purchase by Willem Jansz. Kan was on 14 September 1609 (R 30125). He was then at most 14 years old. Willem Jansz. Kan was buried in the N.K. on 18 December 1619 (DTB 1053/323). However, if he was the broker of the same name, he may have been older.

BuyerJacobus van der Rosiere schoolm[eeste]r by de Varckensluys op de Eschhuys
Buyer FamilyRosiere, Jacobus van der
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a schoolmaster. He would seem to be identical with Jacobus van der Rosieren, clerck ter secretaris in de admiraliteyt van Teijst in Vlanderen, living on the Bantamstraet, who was betrothed to Neltje (Cornelia) van Eijndhoven, from Antwerp, living on the Breestraet, on 30 January 1610. He was the son of Jacob van der Rosieren, predicant in Sprendam; she was assisted by Janneke Kief, her mother (DTB 414/237). Janneke Kief (or Kieft), who married Melchior (or Melsien) van Eijndhoven on 8 February 1585, was also the mother of Isaack van Eijndhoven of R 24960 and of INVNO 629 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 84(1967), col. 112). On January 1613, Jakob van der Rosieren and Kornelia van Eijndhoven had their son Gilles baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Gillis Jansz. (DTB 39/305). On 7 December 1614, the couple had their daughter Kornelija baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Josephus van der Rosieren and Klara van Eijndhoven (DTB 5/125).

BuyerSyvert Sem
Buyer FamilySem, Syvert (Pietersz.)
Buyer NotesSyvert Pietersz. Sem, 1560-1632, son of Pieter Jansz. Sem, lumber dealer in the Houttuynen, was first married to Giert Simonsdr. Meebael. On 1 September 1582, Sijvert Pietersz. Sem, assisted by his uncle Jacob Jacobsz. Sem, was betrothed to Maria Bouwer (DTB 402/127). Jacob Jacobsz. Sem was married to Weijntje Symons, cited in the NOTES to R 30522. Maria Bouwer was the daughter of the rich merchant Arent Bouwer. (For her death inventory, see INVNO 402 of 1635). Maria Bouwer was the sister of Helena Bouwers, the wife of Burchman Claesz. of the present inventory. In 1585, Sem paid a tax of 36 f. He was one of the founders of the Company van Verre and became one of the directors of the V.O.C. in 1602. He invested 12000 f. in V.O.C. shares. In 1631, he was taxed 1000 f. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 113-114 and Kohier, fol. 146, p. 34.) For the inventory of Maritge Bouwers, widow of Syvert Pietersz. Sem, dated 5 March 1635, see INVNO 402. On 14 January 1619, the brother of Syvert Pietersz., named Jan Pietersz. Sem, was cited as the guardian of Marritgen Hermans (Muller), the sister of the engraver Jan Harmensz. Muller of R 32237 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 271). In 1624, Syvert Pietersz. Sem was portrayed by Werner van den Valckert as one of the regents of the Amsterdam Leprooshuis (M.J. Bok, Vraag en aanbod op de Nederlandse kunstmarkt, 1580-1700, 1994, p. 63).

BuyerPieter Jacobsz. Rijn
Buyer FamilyRijn (Rhijn), Pieter Jacobsz. (van) I
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a cloth and silk merchant dealing in caffa, damask, and other expensive fabrics. He set up a company to deal in these goods in 1631 in partnership with the merchant Barent Andriesz. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 779). On the merchant Barent Andriesz., see also the NOTES to R 26927. The son of Jacob Egbertsz. van Rijn and Maria Claes Gaeff (the sister of Neeltge, Trijn, Jan and Barend Claes Gaeff, cited in R 22127), he was baptized in December 1579 and lived op 't water op de hoeck van de Dam in 1601. He bought a house (de Rode Haen) by execution (forced sale) on the Warmoesstraet for 8470 f. in 1602, which was assessed at only 6,600 f. in 1632 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968 36/7). He was still living in the Warmoesstraat on the East side of the Kercksteech, when he paid a tax of 600 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 144, p. 33 and Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 269-270). On 8 December 1604, Pieter Jacobsz., widower of Sara Philips Boomen, living on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Grietje Elberts, widow of Nicolaes van Berensteijn (DTB 411/369). She was the daughter of the wealthy merchant Elbert Luycasz. Helmer (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 117). Pieter Jacobsz. and Griet Alberts had a child baptized on 29 November 1620 in the presence of Claes Lambert and Cornelis Seemsteegh (DTB 5/335). On 30 January 1632, Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn, widower of Grietje Elberts, living on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Weijntje van Foreest, from Amsterdam, widow of Cornelis van Neck (DTB 438/221). Cornelis van Neck, son of Barend Cornelisz. van Neck, bailli and schout of Texel, spent many years for the Magellan company in Ternate, where he enjoyed the esteem of the king of the island. He came back to the Dutch Republic, where he became schout of Texel. He married Wyntge van Foreest on 4 August 1619 (Elias, Vroedschap p. 337). On 12 February 1632, Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his four children of minor age, Elbert, 16, Catharina, 14, Jacob, 10, and Claes, 8, whose late mother was Grietjen Elberts, were entitled to 32,000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). Finally, Pieter van Rijn was betrothed for the fifth and last time, with Weyntge van Walbeeck on 27 September 1637. She was the widow of Evert Jacobsz. Worst (the presumed father of Jacob Evertsz. Worst of R 32975) and the daughter of Jacob van Walbeeck and Maritge van Foreest (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 270, with a correction of Maritge for Weyntge van Foreest, the mother of Weyntge van Walbeeck). . Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn I was a regent of the O.Z. Huiszittenhuis in 1621 and served in the militia company of Jacob Pietersz. Hooghkamer, painted by Jacob Lion in 1628 (Oud Holland, 3 (1885), p. 119). He was buried on 1 May 1639 (DTB 1054/235). As late as 7 and 9 March 1693, a dispute arose over the estate left by Pieter Jacobsz. van Rhijn and his first wife Grietge Alberts. At this time Margaretha van Rhijn, who was cited in this dispute, was already the widow of the painter Philips de Koningh (one of whose paintings appears to have been recorded in the inventory of the insolvent Pieter van Rhijn of INVNO 1365). It appears that Margaretha van Rhijn was either the much younger sister of Pieter Jacobsz. van Rhijn II or the sister of Pieter van Rhijn III. On 16 March 1696, Margaretha van Rhijn named Pieter van Rhijn, the granduncle of her grandchildren as the guardian of these grandchildren. It is not clear whether this granduncle was Pieter van Rhijn II or III. In any case this granduncle's son, likewise named Pieter, was named guardian of these children in case of their granduncle's death (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 164-5). Pieter Jacobsz. van Rhijn was apparently the brother of Willem Jacobsz. (van Rijn) of R 31254. His son of the same name, Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn II married Elisabeth Bessels, daughter of Adam Bessels of R 35041 on 16 January 1634. Pieter van Rijn II became auction master for ship's equipment for the V.O.C. (Nederlandsche Leeuw 50(1932), col. 135). He is probably identical with the insolvent individual Pieter van Rhijn of INVNO 1365.

BuyerAriaen van Balen goutsmith
Buyer FamilyBalen, Ariaen (Adriaen) van (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the goldsmith Adriaen van Balen de jonge. It was probably his father Adriaen van Balen I, also a goldsmith, who invested 400 f. in the first subscription to the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 154). On 20 December 1597, Adriaen van Balen de jonge, goldsmith, 21 years old, living in de IJssel, assisted by Adriaen van Balen, his father, was betrothed to Claasje Dierics, 21, assisted by her brother Claes Dircksz. (DTB 408/269). On 7 December 1612, Adriaen van Balen, goldsmith, brought to the Orphan Chamber 800 f. for his daughter Judith, 7 years old, whose mother was Claesgen Dirxdr. Seger Pietersz. (of R 32330), the brother of the painter Pieter Lastman, was Judith's guardian by testament. Judith was actually baptized on 9 October 1605. The family was Roman Catholic (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek C.B.G. 45(1991), p. 122). Adriaen van Balen de jonge was buried in Amsterdam on 8 September 1623 (DTB 1053/365). His death inventory was taken in Haarlem on 23 September (AVK, Not. Schout, NAH 153, ff. 103-4, cited in Biesboer, Netherlandish Inventories; Collections of Paintings in Haarlem, 2001, p.518).

Buyer FamilyFonteyn, Jan (goldsmith)
Buyer NotesOn 14 September 1614, Jan de Fontaine, goudtsmith, 35 years of age, together with Pieter Pittens, 50, also goldsmith, declared that they both knew Hendrick Jansz., clockmaker, who still made and repaired clocks (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 340). On Pieter Pitten(s), see R 21362. The goldsmith named Jan Fonteyn in this document should not be confused with Dr. Jan Fonteyn, the famous doctor of R 7647.

BuyerJochum Jacobsz. Wachter
Buyer FamilyWachter, Jochum Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesOn 23 May 1603, Jochum Jacobsz. Wachter, widower of Sijntje Franssen, cruydenier (spice merchant), living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Myntgen (signs Mentgen) Ellerts de Veer, 26. Her (unnamed) brother gave his consent (DTB 410/448). Myntgen was the daughter of Albert (or Ellert) de Veer (1564-1620), Secretary of Amsterdam in 1588, Pensionaris of Amsterdam from 1601 to 1610, and of Simontgen Jans Schaeck (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 50.) He may be identical with Jochem Jacobsz., one of the five money changers consulted by the municipality of Amsterdam on the maintenance of the currency (J.G. van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 8). According to a deposition of 17 November 1610, Jochum Jacobsz. Wachter, the swager van den heere pensionaris, had given a co-guarantee for the collection of an excise on flour before 1605 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 694.) On 25 August 1609, Jochem Jacobsz. Wachter and Neeltje Ellers de Veer had their daughter Grietje baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Gerrit Colderman (DTB 39/194). Gerrit Colderman may have been the brother of Geertruyd Colterman, the daughter of Johan Colterman, burgermeester of Haarlem in 1605, who married admiral Jacob Heemskerck. Jacob Heemskerck was an uncle of Simontgen Jans Schaeck and was thus related by marriage to the buyer (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 160). On 19 June 1612, Jochem de Wachter and Mijntje (sic) de Veer had their daughter Jannetje baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Tuijntje Wachters (DTB 39/288). Jochem Jacobsz. Wachter was buried in the N.K. on 8 May 1628. The relatives paid a burial fee of 8 f. (DTB 1054/39vo).

BuyerDaniel Coninx Pieter Coninx borg
Pre Lot HeaderDen 15 dito [marty 1611]
Buyer FamilyConinx, Daniel (I) (de)
Buyer NotesOn 24 December 1602, Jan Gerritsz. Vriesenborch, as husband and guardian of Susanna Conincx (I), Hans Calewaert, as having married Abigaël Coninx, and Daniel Coninx, as replacing Aert Conincx den jongen (II of INVNO 161) and as guardians of the children of minor age of Neeltgen Coninx, all heirs of Aert Coninx de oude (I), drew up a procuration in Dordrecht (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.34 of Nachträge). In this key document about the origins of the Coningh dynasty, Pieter Coningh I (of R 28901) is not mentioned. But if he was the individual of that name who was surety for the purchase of the present lot by Daniel Coninx, as would appear, there is the possibility that he might have been his brother. On 9 June 1605, a child of Daniel Coning I was buried (DTB 1053/39) and another one 22 on 22 January 1611 in the WK (DTB 1100a/57). He was buried in the K.K.H. 16 April 1625 (DTB 1145/94). At the time of his death the jeweler Aert de Conincx (II) (of INVNO 161) still held an obligation benefitting Daniel Conincx I issued by the painter Valerius van der Hoeve in 1611 (see the INTRO of INVNO 161). Daniel Coningh I should not be confused with Daniel Coningh II, the son of Aert Conincx II who was said to be 22 years old in an act of the Orphan Chamber of 23 March 1640 (WK 5073/789) or with the latter's putative son Daniel Coning III, who became a painter in England. On Pieter Coninx (Coningh) II, see the TEXT of R 77 of Montias1.

BuyerHendrick Claesz. Aardebael
Buyer FamilyAardebael, Hendrick Claesz.
Buyer NotesHendrick Claesz. Aardebol has not been identified. The name is apparently spelled alternatively Hardebol. Adriaen Willemsz. Hardeboll was a merchant in woolen cloth. Jan Aertsz. Hardebol (alternatively spelled Aerdebol), who was probably his son, was said to be the uncle of Christina Jans, who was about to be married according to a deposition of 16 August 1638 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 69(1929), p. 614 and NA 867, Not. Van Zwieten). Jan Aertsz. Hardebol was named guardian over the children of the cloth merchant Jan Ghysbertsz., among whom was the knife maker (messemacker) Ghysbert Jansz. whose death inventory was drawn up on 5 September 1636 (NA 483B, fol. 397). On 7 May 1641, Arent Jansz. Hardebol, bachelor, assisted by his father Jan Arentsz. (Aertsz.) Hardebol and Johannes Hallius, his brother, signed a prenuptial contract with Cornelia Tielens, spinster, assisted by her mother Sara Lestevenon, widow of the cloth merchant Jan Tielens. Abraham and Daniel van Lestevenon were co-signatories (NA 1597, Not. W. Hasen). On Abraham van Lestevenon, see the NOTES to R 8367; on Jan Aertsz. Hardebol, see also the NOTES to R 24465 of Montias2; on Jan Tielens (Tiellens), see the TEXT of R 1075 of Montias1 and the NOTES to R 20997 of Montias2.

BuyerHillebrant den Otter
Buyer FamilyOtter, Hillebrant Florisz. den ?
Buyer NotesIt is not clear whether the clerk recording this and other purchases of other works with the name of the buyer Hillebrant den Otter meant to distinguish it from Hillebrant Pietersz. Otter of R 28004, R 28512 etc.. This conjecture seems more likely than not, and it is assumed here that the buyer was Hillebrant Florisz. den Otter (1567-1643), the son of Floris Dircksz. den Otter (1530-Hamburg 1590) and the brother of Claes den Otter, the underbidder at R 28642. Hillebrant Florisz. married Ermgaard Stuyver (Haarlem 1566-1616), the sister of Baertge den Otter, who married Jan Stuyver of R 30120. Hillebrant den Otter was a rich merchant who freighted many ships in the period 1590-1610. He paid of tax of 500 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 11, p.4). On 22 November 1632, Hillebrant den Otter, lord of Vryenes, assisted his niece Magdalena den Otter when she drew up a procuration naming the attorney Hugo van Groenewegen to represent her before the Court of Amsterdam (NA 843, fol. 776, Not. Hoogeboom). On the next day, three witnesses reported having seen a large painting dragged out of the house of Hillebrant den Otter (ibid. fol. 780). Hillebrant Florisz.'s daughter Antoinetta (or Theuntge) married the painter Frederick Vroom (son of Hendrick Vroom) on 23 November 1636. After her death he remarried with Elisabeth van der Nun (1651). When Frederick died in 1667, the house den Otter on the Boomsloot was still in his possession, along with a portrait of Hillebrant den Otter. The house had been used by actors to store their costumes (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 649, 654). In his testament of 15 November 1636, Hillebrant den Otter mentioned two daughters: Magdalena den Otter van Ravensburgh and Lucia den Otter van Ravensburgh (Oud Holland 11(1893), p.95)

Buyer NotesThe buyer was a diamond cutter, from Antwerp. It seems that he was already present in Amsterdam in 1594, as Hans Brodans, when he assisted his nephew, the goldsmith Ferdinand de Maulde, from Antwerp, 26, when he was betrothed to Lysbet van Hast, on 14 May of that year (De Navorscher 6(1858), p. 319. In any case, he was noted in Amsterdam from 1611 to 1620 (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 68). On 22 August 1620, Hans Brodyns, from Antwerp, diamond cutter, 48, living on the corner of the Rosegracht, was betrothed to Ytge Dirx, widow of David Hubertsz. (DTB 425/44).

BuyerHendrick Lourisz. Spiegel
Buyer FamilySpiegel, Hendrick Lourisz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer, born 11 March 1549 and died 5 January 1612, was a merchant and book dealer established op die Rouwaenschse Kaij in het Rate. He was named a delegate to the Admiralty in 1589. He was a well-known letterkundige (amateur of belles lettres) and merchant. On 11 October 1578, Hendrick Laurens Spiegel, assisted by Laurens Spiegel, his brother, was betrothed to Brechtje Martens ten Bergh (Berch) (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 320). Brechtgen ten Berch was the sister of Marten ten Berch II, the fist husband of Helena Bouwers of R 27876 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 37/15). On 27 July 1602, Henrik Laurens Spiegel, widower of Brecht ten Bergh, was betrothed to Dieuwer Jans van Marken (DT 762A/169). Hendrick Lourisz. was the son of Laurens Pietersz. Spiegel (1500-1573). A friend of Roemer Visscher, Hendrick Lourisz. owned a Tower of the Muses on the Amstel. He frequently cited his paintings in his poetry. His collection was mentioned by Carel van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat., p. 160). He seems to have been secretary of the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) (Kalff, Geschiedenis, vol. 4, p. 60). He paid a tax of 35 f. in 1585 when he was living on the West side of the Nieuwendijck (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 125). The family was Roman Catholic. He was a schutter in the corporaalschap of captain Reynst Pietersz. in 1585 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 404). In 1606, Hendrick Lourens Spiegel, living in de gulden Dolphyn next to the Jan Roodenpoort, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. His daughter Marritje Hendricks also bought lots for the same sum (GAA, 99/33 F 740 and 99/34 F 740). On 17 April 1617, Hendrick Lourisz., book dealer, advanced 200 f. to Casper Wedeman, papermaker, to set up a paper-making mill in Epe in Gelderland (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 109).

Buyerschepen Pieter Reael
Buyer FamilyReael, Pieter (Jansz)
Buyer NotesPieter Jansz. Reael was born in 1569 and died in 1643. He was a merchant and shipowner with a firm in his name. He lived on the O.Z. Voorburgwal. He was the brother of Jacob Jansz. Reael of R 32165. On 28 May 1604, Pieter Jansz. Reael, 35 years old, assisted by his father Jan Pietersz. Reael, was betrothed to Weyntgen Frans Oetgens, assisted by her parents Burgomaster Frans Heynrix Oetgens and Aeltgen Verhoef (DTB 411/735). Jan Pietersz. Reael (Amsterdam 1541-Amsterdam 1621) was a member of the Raed of Amsterdam (1603-1621), burgomaster in 1604 and 1621. He probably derived his considerable wealth from his post as collector of taxes. His art collection was cited by Carel van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 159). Weyntgen Frans Oetgens was the sister of Ludewijn Frans Oetgens who married Willem Pauw of R 29737. Pieter Reael was schepen from 1609 to 1611, Regent of the St. Pietersgasthuis in 1607, lieutenant of the city's militia in 1620, keurmeester van 't Touwwerk in 1623, master of the Orphan Chamber from 1625 to 1629 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 261). He served several years in the 1620s, starting in 1625, as one of the weesmeesteren (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 383). On 18 May 1619, Pieter Jansen Reael, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted a ship to Dantzig (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel,, R.G.P., 186(1983), p. 251). He paid a tax of 650 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 3vo., p. 2).

BuyerHercules Cornelisz. Hochlandt int huys van Hendrick Thomasz.
Buyer FamilyHochlandt, Hercules Cornelisz. (in the house of Hendrick Thomasz.)
Buyer NotesIn 1606, Hercules Cornelisz. Hogelant, living in Enkhuisen, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 7 f. 4 st. (GAA, 114/68 F 839). A small child (baer kint) of Hercules Cornelisz. Hoochland, coming from the Blauwe Brug, was buried on 18 August 1610. The sum of 2 f. 18 st. was paid to the church (DTB 1053/119). The name Hendrick Thomasz., at whose house Hercules Cornelisz. was living, is fairly rare. It may be noted that an individual of that name, said to be a bloockemaecker, 25 years old, testified concerning the sacking of a house where a Remonstrant gathering was held, on 22 April 1626 (Van Dillen, Documenten betreffende de politieke en kerkelijke twisten te Amsterdam, Bijdragen en mededeelingen van het Historisch Genootschap Utrecht, 59(1938), p. 232.) This may have been the individual named Hendrick Thomasz., living on the Heeregracht, near the Beulinghstraet, who paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 20v, p. 6).

BuyerRobbert Baudoes
Buyer FamilyBaudoes (Boudoux), Robbert [de]
Buyer NotesThe buyer was born in Brussels about 1575 and became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1598. He was an engraver (plaetsnijder). On 6 January 1605, Robert de Baudez Willemsz., from Brussels, 30 years old, having lived 14 years on the Nieubrugssteegh, was betrothed to Heyltjen Jacobsdr. Heyn, assisted by Tryntje Cornelis, her mother (De Roever in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 2(1879-1880), p. 161). Robbert de Baudoes was a deacon of the Hervormde gemeente, as were Dionys and Tanneke de Baudoes (his brother and sister ?) (Obreen, op.cit. 3(1881-1882), p. 221). On 13 February 1620, Dirck Pietersz. (Bontepaert of R 20948), 39, Josua van den Eynde, 36, Robbert de Boudous (Baudoes), 45, and Claes Jansz. Visscher (of R 22512), 53, engravers (platsnyders), citizens of Amsterdam, made a deposition at the request of Willem Jansz. (Blaeu), book seller (of R 30917), concerning the plates for an atlas, which Jan Evertsz. Cloppenburch (of R 29002) had bought with the deponents at a sale held at the request of Harmen Allertsz., sexton (coster) of the Nieuwe Kerck, on 28 June 1617. The plates had been sold by Dutch auction (?) (gemijnt) by an auctioneer (afslager) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 290 and 355). Herman Ellertsz., born in Warmenhuyzen in 1572, married in Amsterdam in 1597. He was, inter allia, a very enterprising publisher of maps (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 16(1918), p. 64). In an act dated 16 Jul 1637, he was said to be the father and unique heir of Johannes Dyckhovius, preacher in Hemsbroeck and Opdam (NA 522). On his guardianship of the children of the engraver Pieter van den Keer, see the INTRO to R 932 of Montias1. He seems to have been still alive on 16 February 1652, when the inventory of his late wife Maijken Aerts van Bevert was taken. She left Marritie de Groot (with whom Herman Ellertsz. was presently living) all her goods according to her testament (NA 1856, fol. 456, Not. N. Kruijs). Josua van den Eynde was the uncle of Willem Jansz. Blaeu, as emerges from a deposition of 4 November 1639 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 339). On 20 March 1626, Hans Rogiers, brass caster, and Josua van den Eynde were named as co-guardians of the daughter of Josua Doyee, shoemaker (WK 5073/512, fol. 42). In 1631, Robert de Voudoes, living in the Calverstraet, paid a tax of 60 f. (Kohier, fol. 272, p. 62). On 9 August 1635, Robbert de Baudoes, merchant, 60, made a declaration concerning the cashing of money at the request of Jan Jansz. van Dinteren (cited in the NOTES to R 28162) (NA 412A, fol. 145, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) He sold his house on the East side of the Calverstraet in 1636 to Jacques van Kermt of R 25264. Since van Kermt could not pay the full price, he wrote two rente briefen (mortgage letters) to benefit Robert de Boudoux for 3,000 f. each. Anne Wijmer (the sister of Pieter Wijmer of R 28340) took one over on 29 December 1638 (Isabella van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 76(1984), p. 51). On 30 October 1636, Catrina de Baudoes (the sister of Robert and Louis de Baudoes), widow of Hans van Velthem, living in The Hague, and Hendrick de Molijn, husband and guardian of Helena Velthem, named Robbert and Louis de Baudoes, brothers, to represent them before the W.I.C. to collect money due to the late Nicolaes van Velthem, captain in the service of the W.I.C. (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On 15 February 1636, Jacob de Baudoes, from Amsterdam, 27, assisted by his father Robbert de Baudoes, living op 't Nieulant, was betrothed to Sara Slichers, from Amsterdam, 24, assisted by her mother Jannetje de Wolff. Her father was Anthony Slichers of R 20039 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.61). On 10 May 1638, Pieter van den Abele, from Middelburg, jeweler, 30, living in the Langebrughsteech, was betrothed to Catharina de Boudoes (II), from Amsterdam, 18, assisted by her father Robbert de Baudoes, living in the Verwerij (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.57). On 8 August 1646, Robert de Beaudoux, residing in Leyden, gave a procuration to his son Sr. Jeremias de Beaudoux, merchant in Amsterdam, to collect money on the mortgage letter issued by Jacques van Kermt, fur worker (bontwercker), with a face value of 3,000 f. The mortgage was on a house in the Calverstraet, near the Jonge Roelensteech (Obreen, Archief 5(1882-1883), p. 40). The house was later used as an inn. Long after van Kermt's death, it was sold by executive order on 1 February 1662 (Van Eeghen, op.cit., p. 51). Robert de Baudoes was also a merchant. On 2 October 1637, he and Jacob de Baudoes (his nephew?) were cited as freighters of a ship, of which Claes Heyes was the skipper (NA 866, Not. van Zwieten, film 581). Jeremias, the above-cited son of Robbert de Baudoes, merchant, was also a silk dyer. He set up a silk dye works on the Verwersgracht in Wijk 15 (Obreen, Archief 5(1882-1883), p. 48).

BuyerBadens
Buyer FamilyBadens, Francesco (Francois) (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the painter Francesco Badens, born in Antwerp in 1571 as the son of the painter Francois Badens I, who migrated from Antwerp to Amsterdam in 1586, and of Mayken Munnincx. His father bought a house in the Kalverstraet in 1598, called het orgeltje and later den Apendans (where Stoffel Vrylich, a buyer at the sale of the paintings belonging to the painter Hans van de Velde, was said to be living in 1609 (R 29077)). Francois Badens II worked in Rome from 1593 to 1597. He bought a house on Amsterdam's peat market on 15 June 1607 (the house formerly inhabited by Gillis van Conincxloo). In 1613, he was a witness, together with Jan Pynas, at the baptism of Matheus Gansneb Tengnagel (who became a poet), the son of the painter and future Schout Jan Tengnagel. He was the master of Gerbrant Adriaensz. Bredero of R 28859, from around 1598 on. About 1610, Bredero asked Badens to let his father copy a painting by Sebastiaen Vrancx in Badens's possession (Wurfbain in Maandblad Amstelodamum 88(2001), p. 17). Bredero accompanied his (former) master to the burial of Hendrick Goltzius on 1 January 1617 (Badens had known Goltzius at least since 1605 when he had asked him to collect a debt on his behalf). Badens died unmarried in the second half of 1618 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 296.) His sister Mayke Badens had a daughter, named Helena, who was betrothed to Stoffel (Christoffel) Greylich (of R 29077) on 13 August 1605. Another sister, named Lysbeth, married the painter Hans Rydans. Bredius cites a document of 12 August 1654, in which the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (of R 20925) asserts that he had lived for many years in the neighborhood of Elisabeth Badens, daughter of Franchoys Badens, widow of Hans Rydans (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 181). The two sisters had two brother-painters in addition to Francesco: Jan, born in Antwerp on 18 November 1576, spent some time in Italy and died in 1603; and Carel Badens, born about 1596, was living in de Apendans in 1606 when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of that year. He was betrothed to Katelijna Nijssen on 29 April 1628. He witnessed an inventory on 3 December 1630 as a master painter (Briels. op.cit. p.297). On Carel Badens, see also the NOTES to R 29077.

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Lieven Abinga]
Buyer FamilyAbinga, Lieven
Buyer NotesLiefert or Lieven Abbinga was the son of Oloff Abinga and Griete Noormansdr. On 5 November 1591, the goods owned in common by the couple were inventorized. The goods included een schilderij van de Heer die het kruijs draagt dat in het midden van de bedstede staat and other paintings with typical R.C. subjects. The parents were living in the house Gorcum in the Gansoort. They also owned a house in the Gansoort with the sign Abrahams schoot (NA 32, fol. 17, Not. J. Ghijsbertsz., Extracten). On 1 June 1593, Lievert Abinga, 17 years old, passed his testament before Notary Jacob Ghijsbertsz. He named his mother Griet Gerrit Noormans as his heir, not only for what he owned but for what he had inherited from Dirck Gerritsz. (Noorman ?) and from his father's side. If she died, his universal heir would be Gerrit Ghijsbertsz. Noorman (NA 22, fol. 110, Extracten). On 11 May 1598, Claes Oloffsz. named his half brother Lieuwert Oloffsz. his universal heir in his testament (NA 3F/391, Not. Pylorius, Extracten). Lieven Abinga was living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal in 1606 when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 36/9 F 289). Trijn Gerrits Noorman and Simon Gerritsz. Noorman, who also were R.C., seem to have been children of Gerrit Ghijsbertsz. Noorman. Their inventories were taken, respectively, on 21 April 1657 and 31 May 1655 (NA 2801 and NA 1486).
