BuyerWarwijck [crossed out: Garbrant Ariaensz.]
Buyer FamilyWarwijck (Wybrant Rychardt)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, born in 1566, was vice-admiral of the fleet of 8 ships which travelled to the East Indies in 1598 and returned in 1600. Later he became admiral of the Moluccan-eskader. In an act of 10 November 1609, Wijbrand Warwijck, merchant in Amsterdam, 39 years old, declared at the request of Barbara Decken, widow of Jan Specx, that he had known Cornelis Specx in the East Indies and that he, Cornelis Specx, was a good bookkeeper (NA 266, fol. 442vo, Not. van Banchem, Extracten). At his death, which took place on 11 July 1615, when he was still a bachelor, Warwijck left wealth estimated at 30,000 f. Rychardt Gerritsz. Kieft (of INVNO 652, the brother of Jan Gerritsz. Kieft of R 20503) invested 2100 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares at his behest (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 223). In 1615, the year of his death, Wybrant Warwijck was a master of the Oude Waalkerck (Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 166). The name that was crossed out was probably that of Garbrand Adriaensz. (Bredero), the playwright and poet, who is further described in R 28859.

BuyerDr. Steven
Buyer FamilySteven, doctor
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be Mr. Steven, master surgeon in 't Paradijs, who paid a tax of 18 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 21). The master surgeon Steven Vennecool of R 26587 may have been his son. Doctor Steven surgeon, who paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631, was probably the father (Kohier, fol. 255, p. 58). It may be noted that when Dr. Steven paid this tax, he was living next door (or possibly in the same house as) Abraham Meynertsz., at whose sale he bought a lot (see R 26587).

BuyerGarbrant Ariaensz.
Buyer FamilyAriaensz., Garbrant [Bredero]
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the playwright and poet Garbrant Adriaensz. Bredero. He was baptized on 11 March 1585, the son of Adriaen Cornelisz., shoemaker, from Bredero and of Mary Garbrants, Adriaen Cornelisz. Brederode was said to be 66 years old in a deposition of 29 August 1624 (NA 389, fol. 70). He was still alive on 15 June 1633 when he was indemnified for the guarantee he had given to Gerrit Adriaensz. Meun for the farm on the wine tax that Merm had acquired (NA 991, fol.31, Not. J. Bosch). Garbrand had two sisters, Hillegond and Stijn. Mary Garbrants was buried on 13 December 1619. Adriaen Cornelisz. remarried with Aeltje Bartels (he was still alive in 1646, long after his poet-son's death in 1618). Aeltje Bartels was the mother of an illegitimate son, named Pieter, born about 1626, who, in his testament of 19 March 1646, called himself aankomend schilder. Adriaen Cornelisz. was clearly interested in art, perhaps as an amateur painter. In 1610, his son Garbrant Adriaensz., asked his master Francesco Badens (of R 28057) whether he could lend Adriaen Cornelisz. a painting by Sebastiaen Vrancx for him to copy it (M.L. Wurfbain, Gerbrant Adriaensz. Bredero en de schilderkunst, Maandblad Amstelodamum 88(2001), p. 17). In 1614, Bredero's sister Hillegont (1587-1647) waged a suit against Pieter Lastman, which perhaps referred to Lastman's broken vows vis-a-vis Hillegont. Hillegont eventually married Hans Arentsz., the son of Arent Jansz. (van Tongerlo), wine distributor (wijnverlater), on 16 July 1615. Stijn, who already had a bastard daughter, married Goosen Jansz. (not identical with the buyer of R 20854). Mary (Maritgen) Garbrants (Bredero's mother) was related to the Huydecoper family. Her brother Cornelis Garbrantsz. (probably of R 31524), who kept an inn in De vergulde vijser, called himself Conijn. He married Jannitge Pieters (buried 15 December 1591). Their son Pieter Cornelisz. Conijn had an illegitimate son, named Garbrand, before he married Annetge Teunis in 1597 (he was assisted by his uncle Adriaen (Bredero's father). The son, named Lucas, of Pieter Cornelisz. and Annetge Teunis, baptized on 27 March 1597, is the buyer Luegs (Lucas) Conijn of R 26320. After the death of Pieter Cornelisz. (he was buried on 9 February 1621), Annetge Teunis remarried with Jacob Jacobsz. Zeeuw (or Seeuw) (see NOTES to R 23774, 27751, and 31769). (I. van Eeghen, De familie van Garbrant Adriaensz. Bredero 't kan verkeeren Maandblad Amstelodamum 55(1968), pp. 152-159). Bredero lived first in the Nes and, from 1602, on the O.Z. Achterburchwal. He was flagbearer of a company of Schutters. In 1613, when he was still a painter, he joined the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 40). He corresponded with Charles (or Carel) Quina of R 30687. The printer Cornelis Lodewycx van der Plassen (R 28224) published one of his books in 1621 (Van der Aa, Bibliografisch Woordenboek).

BuyerHans Martensz. Otter
Buyer FamilyOtter, Hans Martensz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with Hans Martens, cruydenier, who owned at least a part of the house den otter op't Water. He was born in Antwerp on 29 July 1555 and died in 1613. On 17 January 1580, he married Maycken Provoost, the daughter of Guilliaem Provoost (I) and Maijcken Kermans (Het kasboek van Mr. Carel Martens, Oud Utrecht, 1970, p. 200). The afore-mentioned Guilliaem Provoost (I) seems to have been the father of Guilliaem Provoost II, born about 1572, who was married to Janneken Aardewijns, whose death inventory was taken at the request of Francois Woutersz., merchant on 11 September 1638 (NA 714, film 5149, fol. 273). Guilliam Provoost (III), who was said to be 36 years old in a deposition of 10 October 1640, was perhaps the son of Guilliam Provoost II (NA 1601, fol. 147, Not. W. Hasen). In 1585, Guilliaem Provoost I was living on the other side of the Damsluys (in den otter ?) when he paid a tax of 28 f. He became a citizen of Amsterdam on 15 November 1581. On 3 November 1585, Hans Martens, spices merchant, widower of Mayken Provost, was betrothed to Mayken Bachers, from Middelburg (born in Poperinge), widow of Jaques Peerboom (Het kasboek ..., op. cit.p. 201). He invested 6,000 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 2 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 208.) On 7 December 1603, Hans Martsz. and Maijken Martensdr. had their daughter Sarken (born the previous day) baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Andries Bacher and Grietgen Mostaert (DTB 4/79 and Het kasboek ..., p. 203). Andries Bacher was a physician and counsellor to the Duke of Brunswijck and was intermediary in the sale of the house De Wapper in Antwerp by Hans Thijsz. de oude to Rubens. On 16 January 1601, Stephanus Bacherus, from Antwerp, doctor in medicine, 30 years old, living in Embden, assisted by his sister Maeyken Bachers (the wife of Hans Martens), was betrothed to Meyken Mertens, 20, living Op 't Water, assisted by her father Hans Mertens. Hans Mertens invested 600 f. for his son-in-law Stephan Bacherus in the first subscription for V.O.C.shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 209). Hester Martens (1587-1617), another daughter of Hans Martens, married Anthony van der Heede I of INVNO 256. Another daughter, named Elisabeth Martens (born 15 May 1581), married Franchoijs Baert in 1618 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 172). Still another daughter, Susanna Martens (1588-1652) married the spices merchant Guilliaem van der Helst, born about 1582 (ibid. and NA 200, act of 2 February 1619). A son of Hans Martens named Daniel Martens, born on 21 September 1596, married Gertruyd Hem in 1618, the daughter of the brewer Dirck Dircksz. Hem, who was the only one of the spouses of Hans Martens who was not of South Netherlandish origin. Hans Martens de jonge, another son, followed in his father's business with Daniel Martens and Guilliaem van der Helst (ibid.) Finally another son, named Carel Martens (born on 25 January 1602) kept an account book where he recorded the purchase of Rembrandt prints and paintings. He died in 1649 (Het kasboek van Mr. Carel Martens, op. cit.) The portrait of Hans Martens and his little son David (an error for Daniel ?), painted by Abraham Vinck (of R 29545) graces the cover of Gelderblom's book cited above.

BuyerWarnar Ernst
Buyer FamilyErnst, Warnar (van Bassen)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, born in 1581, buried 14 September 1630, was at first a plumber (loodgieter) op 't Water in de 3 Roemers (document of 1 October 1607, cited in Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 643), later a merchant of earthenware (jugs and pots). On 18 September 1607, Warner Ernst, 26 years old, was betrothed to Maritje Pieters Hollesloot, 20. He was assisted by his mother Fitge Coenen, she by her father Pieter Jansz. Hollesloot (DTB 412/345). Pieter Jansz. Hollesloot was a shooter in the company of Jan Jansz. Carel (I) in 1604 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 135). Pieter Jansz. Brouwer, alias Hollesloot, living on the Singel outsie Jan Roodenpoort in de drie Osjes, next to the vergulden Boom, was provoost of the nine burgervendels of the militia. Born in 1553, he was buried on 5 February 1614. He was married to Maritge Everts Oostwould, who was buried on 20 November 1606, shortly before her daughter's marriage with Warner Ernst. Pieter Jansz. Hollesloot invested 900 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 127). Warner Ernst bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 148/79 F 1067). He was a member of the Amsterdam Council from 1616 to 1630 and Regent of the St. Pietersgasthuis in 1614 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 303.) In 1617, he was represented with five other regents of the Binnengasthuis (St. Pieters) by Cornelis van der Voort (each paid 50 f.) (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, pp. 350-1). He was a director of the W.I.C. just before his death in 1630 (C. Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, 1957, p. 58). In 1627, Joost van den Vondel called him Malkus in his Rommelpot van't Hanekot. The reason for this was that Van Bassen, a strict Calvinist, sold earthenware pottery. According to an old inscription in a copy of Rommelpot, Warnar Ernst van Bassen was called Malkus because he sold earthenware and jugs that, like Malkus [in the New Testament], had only one ear. Nevertheless, Vondel sent him a dedicated copy of his Hecuba in 1627 (J.W. Unger, Vondeliana Oud Holland 2(1884), p.301). On 17 September 1631, Maria (Pieters) Hollesloot, assisted by her swager Willem Jansz. Brughman, declared that her four children of minor age, Johannes, 21 , Pieter, 20, Abraham, 17, an Sophia, 12, whose late father was Warnar Ernst van Bassen, member of the Amsterdam Council and former alderman, were entitled to 32,000 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789). The widow of Warnar Ernst van Bassen, living on the Heeregracht, was taxed 400 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 306, p. 70). On 15 September 1632, an inventory was drawn up of the possessions of Hendrick Evertsz. van Oostwoude. It was made under the supervision of the widow of the late heer Warnaer van Bassen, together with the notary Evert Cocq and Johannes Sweers (cited in the NOTES to R 27676), both as administrators of the estate of Hendrick Evertsz. (DBK 5072/357). Warnar Ernst's sister, named Anna Ernst van Bassen (1584-1640) married Jan Jansz. van Dorhout on 30 May 1606. Jan Jansz. Dorhout was regent of the Spinhuis in 1627 (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 88). After her death in 1640, he remarried, first, in 1642, with Elisabeth Harmens van Limburgh, widow of Coenrad Willemsz. van Ceulen, and, second, on 17 January 1649, with Annetge Jans Tiers, widow of Jan Tievaert (of R 20955) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 305). Jan Jansz. Dorhout and Anna Ernst van Bassen were the parents of Maria Dorhouts, who married Dirck Adriaensz. de Vries (cited as an arbiter in the NOTES to R 23338). In her testament of 13 September 1638, Maria Dorhouts left her parents 5,000 f. (NA 867, fol. 324-6, Not. van Zwieten).

BuyerHendrick de Hase op de Turfmarckt
Buyer FamilyHase (Haes, Haze), Hendrick de (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was Hendrick de Hase II, who was probably the son of Hendrick de Hase I, 1550-1605 (see Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 220). The elder De Hase, born in Antwerp, settled in Amsterdam in 1586 and was married to Clara Coymans, also from Antwerp. Dirck van Os invested 12,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares of 1602 on his behalf. Clara Coymans continued his business after his death, invested 12,000 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1612, and left a fortune of 516,000 f. after her death, which took place in June 1628. Clara was the daughter of Jeronimus Coymans I and Constantia Spinelli who died in 1581 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 600 and 760). The heirs of the widow de Haes, living on the West side of the Keisersgracht, paid a tax of 600 f. (Kohier, fol. 300, p. 68). Hendrick de Hase II was a merchant in the Levant trade with an account of 3 folios in the Wisselbank. He paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631 (Kohier, loc. cit.) Hendrick de Hase de jonge (II) bought lots for 11 f. 10 st. in the 1606 Haarlem lottery (GAA 132/27 F 962). He was also involved in trade with the Near East and owned lands in Schermeer (De Navorscher 69(1920), p. 261). It was presumably his son, Hendrick de Haes III, who signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Catharina Cotterman on 6 November 1636 (NA 949, film 1172). Her death inventory was taken on 2 September 1639 at the request of Janneken Cotermans, widow of Bartolemeus Aux Brebis, in the name of Hendrick de Hase (II), as father of Hendrick de Hase de jonge (III). The painter Isaack Luttickhuys was a witness to the inventory (NA 483, film 6484, fol. 443 and foll.) The putative siblings of Hendrick de Hase II were: Jeronimus de Hase (or Haze) of R 29604; Constantia de Haes, who married Jan Nicquet II and, after his death in 1599, remarried with Elbert Schuijt of R 28923 in 1605; Susanna de Hase (1587-1658) who married Jacques Mercijs Hansz. (born in 1580) and remarried with Jacomo van Uffelen (of R 7706), widower of Maria van Erp, on 16 October 1618; and Sara de Hase (baptized on 11 January 1592) who married Paolo de Willem I, the father of Paolo de Willem II of INVNO 197. Hendrick de Hase II may also have been the brother of Maria de Hase, the mother-in-law of the painter Jacob van Nieulandt. When Constantia de Haes (Haze) married Jan Nicquet II in 1603, the Church Council reproached her parents for having allowed dancing at the wedding (Roodenburg, Onder het censuur, p. 324). On 12 November 1620, Hendrick de Hase (II) was a witness to the baptism (and was the presumed godfather) of Jacob van Nieulandt's son Heinrick, together with Maria de Haes (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 235). On 5 June 1632, he acknowledged a debt of 72,000 f. to his brother-in-law Jacomo van Uffelen (of R 7706), plus 9,000 f. which he stood to collect in the form of refined sugar owed to him by the widow of Hans Pelt (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). For another document naming several members of the De Haes (De Haze) family, see the NOTES to R 28923.

BuyerHans Bouwer
Buyer FamilyBouwer, Hans (II)
Buyer NotesHans Bouwer II, born about 1571, was the son of Hendrick Bouwer, born in 1547, and of Catharina ten Bergh, daughter of Marten ten Bergh (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 413). He was the brother of Maritge Bouwers of R 27865 and the uncle of Melchior Bouwer of R 27856. On 19 November 1603, Hans Bouwer and Helena Gotemackers signed a pre-nuptial contract. He brought 6,000 f. to the marriage plus merchandise (NA 4, fol. 525, Not. Pilory, Extract) On 20 November 1603, Hans Bouwer Heijnrixsz., 32 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his mother Catryn ten Bergh, was betrothed to Helena Goetemackers, 23 (DTB 665/322). He was living on the Oude Singel when he bought lots for 150 f. (one of the highest amounts recorded) in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA 45/153 F 365). He was a prosperous merchant until he was arrested following his bankruptcy in 1611. Balthasar Claes Gerritsz., the grandfather of the painter Johannes Vermeer, acted as his dienaer (clerk or employee) in a deposition made on his behalf in September 1611 (Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, 1989, pp. 20,21). For his inventory of 3 July 1607, see INVNO 537. Hans Bouwer, koopman in Amsterdam, freighted a ship to Venice on 2 November 1606 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 320.) On 29 June 1608, the Orphan Chamber appointed Jacob Willemsz. Warmont and Hans Bouwer (II) as guardians over Hans Bouwer I's two illegitimate children, Maritge and Cornelis (WK 5073/513, fol. 128vo.) At some unspecified date, presumably after his death, Hans Bouwer II was replaced by Sywert Pietersz. Sem of R 27934, who was married to his sister Maritge Bouwer. On 9 October 1625, Syvert Pietersz. Sem and Ysbrant Hem (of R 28963) brought to the Orphan Chamber an inventory of the goods left by Katharina ten Berghe, widow of Heyndrick Bouwer, to benefit the children of Hans Bouwer (II), the son of Heyndrick Bouwer and Katharina ten Berghe (WK 5073/789).

BuyerDenis Bave op de Biercay in de Blauhandt
Buyer FamilyBave, Denis (or Dionys)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a merchant, born in Rijssel, who first migrated to Cologne and then to Amsterdam, where he was first noted in 1609 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden p. 294). On 16 December 1610, Denis Bave (signs), from Rijssel, widower of Janneken Davids, living on the O.Z. Westerburchwal, was betrothed to Anna Hudde, widow of Samuel Kijckenpoost, assisted by Belitge Hudden, her nichte (DTB 414/440). Samuel Kijckenpost was the son of Jacob Kijckenpost I, who was banned from Ronse in Flanders for his heretic (Protestant) activities and went to live in Emden. Samuel was first noted in Amsterdam as a retail merchant (kramer) but later became an overseas cloth merchant (Gelderblom, op. cit., pp. 89-90; see also the NOTES to R 20569). Jacob Kijckenpost (II?) was married to Brigitta Hudden before 28 December 1604 when the couple baptized their daughter Maria in the N.K. (DTB 39/55). Belitge Hudde, the daughter of Arent Hudde (1515-1582), married Jan Claes Boelensz. who died in 1608 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 241). Denijs Bave, an important merchant, is cited in a procuration that he issued with some other colleagues on behalf of Jacques Carbeel(s) to collect money in Dantzig as early as 20 October 1595 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 178(1981), pp. 61-2). In or about 1608, he participated with Louis del Becque in the outfitting and freighting of two ships to Angola under command of Cornelis and Lucas van de Venne (Gelderbloom, Zuidnederlandse kooplieden, p.181). He had two folios at the Wisselbank in the years 1611-1612 and 5 folios in 1615. At the first subscription for V.O.C. shares, he invested 14,400 f. (through Jean and Nicolas Bonnenuit), at the second, in 1612, 50,300 f. (the fifth largest amount for investors of South Netherlandish origin). On Nicolaes Bonnenuit who married Alix Sicx I of R 27634 to the NOTES to that record. When, after the death of Janneken Davids, Denis Bave remarried with Anna Hudden in 1610, she was said to be living on the Rouanse Kay, which was perhaps the above address (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister pp. 180, 259). In 1616, Denys Bave, along with Philips Metsue, were said to be the uncles and guardians of Jacques Kyckenpoost de jonge (WK 5073/513, fol. 158vo.) On Jacques (Jacob) Kijckenpost II, see also the NOTES to R 20569 of Montias2. On 9 July 1619, Denis Bave named Pierre Boddart and Pierre Bave, his sons-in-law, to represent him while he was away on a voyage (NA 381, fol.9). Denis Bave was still alive in 1624 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). On Pierre (Pieter) Boddart, see the NOTES to R 20715.

BuyerJan Carel
Buyer FamilyCarel (or Kaerel), Jan (Jansz.) (de oude)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Jan Jansz. Carel de oude, born in Bruges circa 1545, who became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1578, five weeks after the Alteratie, and died in 1616. He was married to Jacomina Florisdr. Jan Janssen Karrel and Jacopgen Floris had their son Pieter baptized in the O.K. on 23 August 1587 (DTB 1/333). He was the father, in addition to Pieter, of Andries and Trijnken for all three of whom he invested 1000 f. each in V.O.C. shares; he also invested 15,000 f. for his son Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge (II, 1574-1620) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 199). Jacobin Floris was buried in the N.K. on 20 November 1606 (DTB 1053/65). He was buried in the Z.K. on 1 November 1616 (DTB 1089A/12 vo.). He was at first a dairy merchant, but then became a shipper and large-scale dealer in Near Eastern goods. He participated financially in the expedition of Willem Barendsz to find a northwest passage to China. Shortly after his arrival in Amsterdam, he bought a house on the Dam, on the corner of the Rockin. He then had a house built on the Breestraet. which was inhabited by his son Jan Jansz. Carel II He took over the glasshouse of Antonio Obisy, located on the Kloveniersburgwal, in or about 1600, and turned over the responsibility for its management to his son-in-law Jan Hendricksz. Soop (of R 28900), who had married his daughter Barbara in 1598 (Dudok van Heel, De hof van de E. heer Pinto, Maandblad Amstelodamum 62(1975), pp. 133-4). In 1594, he freighted three ships. He left a fortune of 376,000 f. at his death. He invested 33,000 f. in V.O.C. shares at the subscription of 1602 and 58,500 f. in the second in 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 259). He was a director of the V.O.C., apparently from the first year of its founding in 1602 until his death (Algemeen Rijksarchief, Namen der Bewinthebbers... , Inv. Aanwinsten, nr. 1902-XXVI-94 (938)). In or about 1604, he was portrayed by Gerrit Pietersz. in the Corporaalschap of Captain Jan Jansz. Carel and Lieutenant Thijs Pietersz. Schrijver (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 309). His death inventory, which was taken by Notary Bruyningh on 25 February 1620, contained expensive paintings, which were appraised by Cornelis van der Voort (Bredius, Küunstler-inventare, p. 803.) His son, Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge, who is the less likely candidate for the purchase of this lot, took part in the first trip to the East Indies in 1595 and again in 1598. He was named Vice-Admiral in 1599. After his return he participated in his father's business. He married Anna Jansdr. ten Grootenhuys (1580-1614) on 18 December 1600 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 277-8 and Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 107.) The fact that another buyer at the sale, Jan Hendricksz. Sop (or Soop), was the son-in-law of Jan Jansz. Carel de oude perhaps increases the likelihood that the latter was the buyer of this lot. On 14 June 1622, the children of Jan Jansz. Carel de oude sold a house that had belonged to their father in the Nes for 18,100 f., another on the Breestraet for 1,825 f., and a third on the Roodenpoort for 18,300 f. (WK 5073/913).

BuyerJan Hedricksz. Sop
Buyer FamilySop (Soop), Jan Hendricksz.
Buyer NotesOn 10 September 1598, Jan Heijnricxsz., 20 years old, living op de Dam, assisted by his father Heijnrick Pietersz., was betrothed to Barbara Karels, 20, also op de Dam, assisted by her father Jan Jansz. Karel and her mother Jacomyna Faris (DTB 408/390). Jan Hendricksz. Sop was the son of Hendrick Pietersz. Schrijver who was a neighbor on the Dam of Jan Jansz. Karel de oude. Sop was born on 18 March 1578 and died in 1638, He owned and managed a glassmaking company, together with his father-in-law Jan Jansz. In 1606, he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 30 f., living in het glashuis. The collector was Jan Jansen Carel de jonge, his brother-in-law (GAA, 125/30 F 916). In 1611, he was a regent of the Krankzinnige Huis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 311). He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, living in the voorste Verwerstraet (Kohier, fol. 223, p. 51). He died in 1638. BuyerPieter Coning goutsmith
Buyer FamilyConing, Pieter (I) (de)
Buyer NotesWe may be fairly sure that this lot (and the lots bought by Pieter Coning previous to this date) was purchased by the jeweler and goldsmith Pieter (de) Coning(h), born in Antwerp about 1572, the father of the painter Salomon Koninck and of Maijcke Konincx, married to Gerrit Wynants (of R 20534), and of Susanna Konincx, married to Hans Biermans (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 35 of Nachträge). Pieter de Coning I himself was married to Passchyntge Konincks, who survived him (see the NOTES to R 20534). He became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1595. He was the brother of Aert Konincx II of INVNO 161, as an Orphan Chamber document cited in the TEXT of R 77 of INVNO 161, establishes. On 21 August 1610, Pieter Conincx, goldworker, from Antwerp, 38, declared that Jan van Coppenhagen had been apprenticed to him for five years (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 348). Pieter Coning I was buried on 8 February 1627 in the N.K. The last lot purchased by Pieter Coningh (or a variant of the name) occurred on 23 April 1626 (R 26815). It may have been bought by either Pieter Coning I or by Pieter de Coning II, the son of Aert de Conincx of INVNO 161, although one would have expected the clerk to distinguish I and II if they were both buyers. In the NOTES I assume that all purchases by Pieter Coning were made by Pieter Coning I, but the possibility should be kept in mind that some of them were actually bought by Pieter (de) Coning II. Note finally that the individual named Pieter Conincx who stood surety for Daniel Conincx when he bought a lot on 15 March 1610 (R 27979) was probably Pieter Coning II, the son of Aert de Coninck II.

BuyerPhilips Pelt opt Water in de Nyptang
Buyer FamilyPelt, Philips
Buyer NotesPhilips Pelt was a merchant both largescale and retail, born in Antwerp in March 1578; he became a citizen of Amsterdam on 16 February 1604 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 310). He was the son of Abraham Pelt I (Den Bosch 1533-Hamburg 1602) and of Catharina de Bock (Aalst 1542-Hamburg 1625). He was the brother of Hans Pelt I (Antwerp 1567-Amsterdam 1628), of Jasper Pelt, and of Abraham Pelt II (of R 29305) (Amsterdam 1597-after 1632). Philips Pelt married Christina Agenna (1581-29 October 1614) in Hamburg in December 1600 (1581-29 October 1614) (all the bio-information on Philips Pelt is taken from M. Simon Thomas, Onze IJslandsvaarders in de 17de en 18e eeuw, 1935, appendix G). His son Emanuel (of R 34656) was born on 8 December 1605. On 11 December 1605, Philips Pelt, together with his unnamed wife (Christina Agenna), had his son Emanuel baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Emanuel Ogenraet and Eva Vogels (DTB 138/162). Emanuel Pelt married Anna Verpoorten (at an unknown date) and died on 25 July 1658. On 12 May 1621, Pieter van den Berch and Philips Pelt were named as guardians over the children of Balthasar van Dortmondt (I) (WK 5073/513, fol. 184). The son of Philips Pelt, named Abraham (Philipsz.), was betrothed to Agatha van Zanten on 19 August 1634 (DTB 765/55). On 29 March 1629, Philips Pelt and Paolo de Willem (I) (the father of Paolo de Willem de jonge of INVNO 197), merchants in Amsterdam, freighted a ship to Copenhagen (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P. 186(1983), p. 458). The connection with Copenhagen was renewed on 8 December 1632, when Philips Pelt, merchant in Amsterdam, appeared on behalf of Johan Braem, merchant in Copenhagen, to hire harpooners for the whale catch. The harpooners were expected to sail to Copenhagen before taking off for the North Sea (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 10(1912), p. 198). For another document on the whale trade involving Johan Braem (Jan Braems), see the NOTES to R 23694. On Philips Pelt's activities in the Northern trade, see also Thomas, op.cit. pp. 60, 61, 65, 82, 93, 118, and 148. Philips Pelt paid a tax of 125 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the West side of the Keysersgracht (Kohier, fol. 298vo., p. 68). On 10 June 1633, Jan Clocker, merchant (of R 33017), 36, made a deposition at the request of Philips Pelt regarding Swedish copper money (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). He was portrayed in a militia piece by Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy in 1639 (the Corporalschaap of of Dirck Theuling) (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 97.) On 26 September 1633, Cornelis Nason (of INVNO 242), 40, and Thobias de Vos, 37, testified at the request of Carel Looten (the father of Jan Looten of INVNO 286) and Christiaen Bockellin, merchants, concerning a lot of wax that had been bought from Philips Pelt and sent to the witnesses' waxbleaching establishement for bleaching purposes. The witnesses found that the wax had been contaminated and falsified, as had been shown to Pelt (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 4 July 1635, Isaack van Harsbeeck, 48, Paul van Harsbeeck, 42, and Boudewijn van Boshuijsen, 31, merchants in Amsterdam, declared at the request of Philips Pelt, likewise merchant, that they had inspected some vats of Moscow talcum which they had found to be worth less than they were supposed to (NA 695A, film 4981). Paul van Hartsbeeck (Hertsbeeck) (of R 32142) was the brother of Isaack van Hertsbeeck (on whom see the NOTES to R 27197 and R 28589). On 5 April 1636, Philips Pelt, 58, and Guillaume van Hooren, 40 (the brother of Jacques van Hoorn of INVNO 110), merchants, curateurs of the estate of Abraham van Soest II (the son of Abraham Sost I of R 30192 of Montias2), made a deposition at the request of Christoffel and Jan Rap[haest ?], likewise merchants (NA 695A, film 4982). On 18 May 1640 Philips Pelt assisted Margrieta Sandra before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her two children with Guilliam Laurens. The children stood to inherit 2,000 f. from their father (WK 5073/789). Guilliam Laurens (I) who operated a bleaching works in 1613 (R 33789) was the father of Anna Laurens who married Leendert Leendertsz. of R 33789 on 1 September 1623. In 1643, he joined a number of other merchants calling for stabilization of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 85). The house De Nyptang on the Water was later owned by Joachim van Arras of INVNO 453. There was another house with the same name on the Keizersgracht, which may have been owned by Pieter Wybrantsz. of R 32322.
