BuyerHans van Loon bij Jacob van Neck
Buyer NotesOn the buyer Hans van Loon, see R 7696. Jacob Jacobsz. van Neck was a famous admiral who commanded two fleets that sailed to the East Indies in 1598 and 1600. He was born in 1564 and was buried 8 March 1638. He lived in 1604 on the O.Z. Voorburgwal in Bergen in Noorwegen, thereafter on the Oudeschans (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 336). I. van Eeghen pointed out that Hans van Loon was living at the time in de Raap op de Zeedijck (as noted in R 7696), whereas Jacob van Neck was lodged aan de Oude Vesten (or Schans), between de Korses and the Jan Roodenpoort. She concludes that bij in this case implies that Jacob van Neck was the surety (borg) for Hans van Loon (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1969), p. 87).

BuyerAlbert Schuyt
Buyer FamilySchuyt (Schuijt), Albert (Elbert) (Gijsbertsz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Albert Gijsbertsz. Schuyt, was born in Naarden in 1576; he died in Amsterdam on 18 June 1632 and was buried four days later (DTB 1100A/2). On 28 April 1599, Jacques Bernert (Bernart), merchant living in Amsterdam, named Albert Schuyt, merchant in Dantzig, to recover some goods that had been sent by Jacques Steur in Middelburgh to Albert Schuyt (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 140). Jacques Steur was probably related to Johanna de Steur, born in Haarlem in 1603, who married Albert's brother Arent (cited below) in 1623. Later Alber Schuyt became an important merchant in the Near Eastern trade and an insurer, living on the Heregracht. He was betrothed to Anna Bernard on 22 March 1603 (DTB 410/276). She was the daughter of Jacques Bernert cited above. After Anna's death, Schuyt remarried in 1605 with Constantia de Haze, widow of Jan Nicquet II (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 1017). Constantia de Haze invested 1800 f. in V.O.C. shares (via Ewout Cornelisz. dienaer van Gheraerdt Reynst) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 209). At the Haarlem lottery of 1606, Albert Schuyt bought 23 lots for 6 f. and another 23 lots for the same sum (GAA, 113/13 F 826 and 132/6 F 961). Elbert Schuijt and his daughter (perhaps Anna Schuyt who married Gerard Reynst II) paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631 at which time they lived on the Heregracht (Kohier, fol. 182, p. 42). Note that Constantia de Haze was the daughter of Hendrick de Haze I. Her putative brother Hendrick de Haze (or de Hase) II was also a buyer at auction (R 28875). Between 1602 and 1608, Albert Schuyt freighted 12 ships, between 1609 and 1616, 2 ships (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel,, R.G.P. vols. 184-5, pp. 602 and 631 resp.) In 1608, he signed a petition with a number of other merchants requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect transfers of money (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16.) On 29 September 1629, Albert Schuijt, together with Nicolaes Outgersz., Albert Willemsz., Guilliaem van der Elst and Joost Willemsz. Nieukerck, all merchants in Amsterdam, made a deposition concerning a shipload of potash laden in Dantzig, which had been held up in Hoorn. They were represented by the attorney Guillaume (or Willem) van den Vondel, the brother of the poet Joost Vondel (J.F.M. Sterk, Oorkonden over Vondel en zijn kring, Bussum, 1918, p. 318). Tn 1628, Albert Schuyt signed the Remonstrant petition of that year. In a deposition made in Utrecht on 15 May 1631, the painter Hercules Seghers (of R 30470) declared that 20 of his paintings were deposited with (berustende onder) Aelbert Schuyt living in Amsterdam. He had sold these -- and other paintings presently with Salomon de Vogel (of R 7613), Dr. Jacob Gorssius, and Wouter Davits (probably of R 23401) -- to the dealer Jean Antonio Romiti (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 383). An act of 8 May 1634 revealed that a dispute had arisen between Albert Schuyt and Jan Schuyt over a company that they were associated in. In a resolution of the dispute, it was agreed that Jan Schuyt would give Albert Schuyt 863 ducatons (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). It is not clear what family relation Jan bore to Albert Schuyt. In a document dating from the end of August 1634 Albert's widow Constantia de Haze, assisted by her son-in-law Jan van Lier (perhaps of R 36731), Hendrick de Haze (II) and Sr. Paolo de Willem (I), as the husband of juffr. Sara de Haze, all living in Amsterdam, heirs of Pieter de Haze, her late brother, named Jeronimus de Haze (of R 29604) and Jacques van Uffelen (of R 7706), their brother and brother-in-law respectively, to collect and settle debts to which she was entitled (NA 641, fol. 97). Constantia de Haze continued to manage her husband's business after his death. In an insinuation dated 14 July 1637, addressed to Valerius van Gistelen (of R 27537), Jan Arentsz. Delft (of R 20727), and Willem Turcken, all merchants, she averred that she had abandoned all claims on the goods and merchandise carried on the ship de goede Job which had been captured by a Spanish galley. On the same date she addressed the same insinuation to Jasper Lescardt, Andries Pels, Abraham de Relaer, Gerbrandt Dobbes, the maid servant of Paolo de Willem, the servant of Jeronimus Hesters, the wife of Daniel van Geelen (II or III), the maid servant of Jan Michielsz. Blaeu, the daughter of Jan Schuyt, and the mother of Isaack Hattevier (NA 919, film 1150). On Andries Pels, see the NOTES to R 7591. Jeronimus Heesters was a merchant of South Netherlandish origin who was born about 1598 and was first noted in Amsterdam in 1624 (Gelderblom, Zuid-nederlandse kooplieden, p. 303 and Prosopographic Data Base). Gerard Reynst II, the husband of Anna Schuyt, was a famous collector of naturalia and of paintings. On 19 June 1636, Sr. Gerard Reijnst (II), husband and guardian of Anna Schuijt, entered into an agreement with Constantia de Haze, widow of Albert Schuijt, concerning the inheritance from Albert Schuijt, as well as from Albert Schuijt de jonge, the brother of Anna Schuijt (NA 642, fol. 5vo and 6, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) Paolo de Willem (Wilhem) I was the father of Paolo de Willem de jonge of INVNO 197. On 10 November 1639, a broker and his son declared at the request of Adriaen van Bon and Simon Goulart,silk-cloth merchants, that they had been intermediaries in a transaction whereby Bon and Goulart had bought Pisa satins and armosins from the widow and heirs of Albert Schuyt. The silk cloths in question were said to be of poor quality (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 144(1974), p. 247). Albert Schuyt, in addition to Anna, cited above, left a daughter Helena, who married Iaac Coymans II (cited in the NOTES to R 28346). Albert Schuyt's brother Arent Gijsbertsz. Schuyt (1595-1649) married Jannetge de Steur in 1623. Arent was active in the trade with Moscovy in partnership with Carel du Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 27358 and 27363) (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.271). Catharina Schuyt (1628-1669), the son of Arent Schuyt and Jannetje (Johanna) de Steur, married Thieleman Soolmans, the son of Iaac Soolmans (of R 27398) and of Maria van Beringen on 19 May 1654 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 1018).

BuyerAnthony Vrancken
Buyer FamilyVrancken, Anthony
Buyer NotesOn 30 September 1622, Anthonis Francken, 23, assisted by his father Frans Jansz., living Op 't Water, was betrothed to Annetgen Willems [signs Glabbeck], 20, assisted by her sister Neeltien Willems, living in Utrecht (DTB 669/121). At the sale of spices of Pieter Mercijs of 25 February 1625, Frans Jansz. bought some lots, the purchase of which was guaranteed by Jacob Francken (Anthonis Francken's brother, cited below) and Cornelis van Bronckhorst (WK 5073/957). On 24 April 1636, Franck Jansz., 67 years old made a deposition at the request of Jan Duijvensz. of Leyden. He stated that Jan Duijvensz., owned one sixth of the house De 3 Morianen on the Nieuwen Dijck (in which the master soap boilers of Amsterdam frequently held their meetings), which house was now rented for 1,000 f. a year. This sixth part came from Anna Francke, who was the grandmother of the producent (Duijvensz.) and the mother of the witness (Franck Jansz.) (NA 695A, film 4821, omslag 71, fol. 361, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 25 May 1634, Anthony Vrancken , merchant, owing to his debts to various shopkeepers, ceded his goods, including various fabrics (Leytsche sayen etc..) to his father Frans Jansz., his brother Jacob Vrancke, and his brother-in-law Dirck Claesz. Verwer (NA 863, fol. 153vo, Not. J. van Zwieten). Dirck Claesz. Verwer, cloth dyer, born in 1600, was a director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg between 1645 and 1649 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 72(1980), p. 42). In 1631, Franck Jansz. (Anthony's father), living on the Deventer Houtmarckt, paid a tax of 125 f. in addition to 41 f. 5 st. for the inheritance from Anna Francken. Anthony Vrancken was still alive on 31 July 1660 when the inventory of his wife's possessions was taken (INVNO 224). Anthony Vrancken and Anna van Glabbeeck were the parents of Nelletge Francken, who married the painter Govert Camphuysen (betrothal on 9 February 1647 in Amsterdam; she was assisted by her father Anthony Francken (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 73). Anna van Glabbeeck may have been the sister of the painter Gysbert van Glabbeeck, to whom three paintings were attributed in the inventory. She may also have been related to Jan Glabbeeck who witnessed a document signed by Rembrandt in 1653 and may have been his pupil (Oud Holland 33(1915), p. 244).

BuyerMelchior Mathijsz. suyckerbacker by Vinck
Buyer FamilyMathijsz., Melchior
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a sugar baker and refiner. Vinck was probably the painter Abraham Vinck. On 28 November 1599, Melchior Matthijsen, from Antwerp, 28 years old, assisted by his uncle Pieter Pels, having lived 13 years on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Goedela van de Venne, from Antwerp, 25, 14 years as above (in the N.Z. Achterburchwal), assisted by her mother Goedeken Verheeven and her stepfather Marcus Jacobsz. (DTB 409/84). On 29 September 1627, Pieter Pels signed a declaration with the attorney Willem van den Vondel (the brother of the poet Joost Vondel) concerning a shipment of sugar (J.F.M. Sterk, Oorkonden over Vondel en zijn kring, pp. 319-320). He is probably not identical with Pieter Danielsz. Pels, whose death inventory is dated 13 January 1659 (INVNO 188). Marcus Jacobsz. may have been the father of the sugar refiner Cornelis Marcus of R 20542. On June 10. thus four months before this sale, a merchant named Jaques Payeur accused the sugar refiner Melchior Mathijsz. of not having delivered 1000 f. of sugar (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 655). On 25 February 1625, Melchior Mathysz., zuyckerbacker, bought cruijderijen at the Pieter Mercijs sale (WK 5073/957).

BuyerHans Couvreur tot wiens versoeck
Buyer FamilyCouvreur, Hans (Jan)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is perhaps identical with Jan Couvreur, who was 25 years old on 6 June 1620 when he was betrothed to Margarita Wijngaarts, widow of Pieter Freemau. He was said to be a caffawercker (DTB 424/263). If he was born ca. 1595, he would only have been 11 or 12 years old when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 12 st. in 1606 and 13 years old when he bought the present lot. This is somewhat improbable even though some teenagers are known to have bought lots in the lottery and to have made purchases at Orphan Chamber sales. On 14 August 1622, Jan Couvreur and Geertje Wijngers (not Mijngers, as in the DTB files) had their daughter Sara baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jan Ditsemeer (DTB 40/178).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Louris Joosten Baeck]
Buyer FamilyBaeck, Louris (Laurens) Joosten
Buyer NotesOn 9 March 1596, Laurens Joosten Beck (signs), 26, from Steckenen in the Land van Waes, assisted by Antoni Anthonisz., who brought Baeck's mother's consent, was betrothed to Dieuwer Jacobsdr., 27, assisted by her mother Cryntgen Willems and Pieter Willemsz. Vrient, alderman of Amsterdam (DTB 407/347). (Stekenen is a small town near Antwerp in the Land van Waas). His betrothed Dieuwer Jacobsdr. (1569-1645) was the sister of the rich merchant Claes Jacobsz. van Harencarspel (1564-1631), who was a member of the Vroedschap from 1618 to 1631 and a master of the Orphan Chamber from 1629 to 1631. It is not certain whether the individual Laurens Back, a merchant of North Netherlandish origin, who was a member of the College der Consuls of Middelburg in 1589, is the same Laurens Joosten Baeck (he would only have been about 19 years old at the time (V. Enthoven, Een symbiose tussen koopman en regent in Ondernemers & bestuurders (Lesger and Noordegraaf ed.), 1999, p. 219). On 2 July 1598, Laurens Joosten (who is almost certainly identical with our buyer) requested a deposition from a skipper concerning a ship that Joosten had freighted in 1596 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 119). In 1606, Lourens Joesten Baeck, living in the Keizerstraat, bought lots for 5 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 12/33 F 84). On 12 August 1613, an insinuation was lodged against Laurens Joosten, merchant, concerning a contract he was said to have broken for the operation of a sugar refinery (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 55). His refinery stood op de Lastage in the Keizerstraet. He was active as a sugar refiner at least from 1608 to 1639 (Poelwijk, In dienste vant suyckerbacken, p. 256). In 1631, he was taxed 500 f. (Kohier, fol. 248, p. 57). He was the owner of a country house near Beverwijck where his good friend, the poet Joost van den Vondel was a frequent guest. Vondel wrote a poem in 1625 in which he cited the two filles a marier of Laurens Baeck, Dieuwertje and Dianier. The former was 22 when she married the Mennonite Cornelis Schouten van Cliff. The pair joined the Remonstrant church (he on 19 May 1636, she on 10 February 1637) (Maandblad Amstelodamum 45(1958) p. 125) Catharina had to wait until she was 31 to marry Hillebrant Bentes (of INVNO 348) on 11 December 1639 (ibid.) Laurens Baeck invested 1200 f. in the V.O.C. in 1602 and 16600 f. in 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 206 and 259). Louwrens Joosten Baecx, undoubtedly the same individual, freighted 9 ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch Historisch Jaarboek, 17 (1931), p. 268) and 1 ship (with his brother-in-law Claes van Harenscarpel) in 1609 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 186(1983), p. 87). In 1618, Laurens Joosten Baeck was named by the city magistrates, alongside Pieter Beltens (of R 28932) and the Catholic Hillebrand den Otter (of R 28004), to arbitrate a dispute that had arisen in the Sephardic Jewish community (R.G. Fuks-Mansfeld, De Sefardim in Amsterdam tot 1795, Uijtgeverij Verloren, p. 63.) Laurens Joosten, even though he did not sign the Remonstrant petition of 1628, was surely sympathetic to the Remonstrant cause. In 1625, he offered refuge and protection to Joost van den Vondel when the latter fled prosecution in the aftermath of the staging of his tragedy Palamedes (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 488). His son Joost Baeck (1597-1681), who did sign the petition of 1628, was married to Magdalena van Erp, whose sister Christina van Erp married the historian and poet, the famous Droost van Muyden, Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, in June 1623 (Oud Holland 29(1911), p. 132, with mention of the pendant portraits of Joost Baeck and Magdalena van Erp by Cornelis van der Voort in the Musee de Lyons; see also Kalff, Geschiedenis ..., vol. 4, p. 221). On 10 April 1625, Joost Baeck, Jan de Wael, and Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft were appointed by the Orphan Chamber guardians over the children of Aert van Erp and Jacopyne de Jongh (WK 5073/513). Aert van Erp was first married to Gertruyd Willems van Tenessee, with whom he procreated Christina van Erp, who, as cited above, married the historian Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, and Maria van Erp, who married Jacques van Uffelen of R 7706. It is apparently with his second wife, Jacopyne (or Jacomijne) de Jongh, that he became the father of Sara van Erp who married David van Baerle (of R 20459) in 1620. Joost Baeck signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He bought jewelry (but no art) at the sale of Jan van Maerle (INVNO 270 of September 1637); he was then said to be living on the Voorburchwal bij de Varckensluijs; his sureties were the jewelers David and Pieter ter Haer (of R 18944 and R 21042 resp.) (WK 5073/962). On 11 December 1639, Catharina Baeck (the daughter of Laurens Joosten and Dieuwer Jacobs) married Hillebrand Bentes of INVNO 348. Laurens Joosten Baeck and Dieuwer Jacobs Harenkarspel drew up their testament on 17 april 1642. They instituted as their heirs Justus (Joost), Catharina, and Laurens Baeck and their descendants and the three children left by the late Dieuwertgen Baeck, married to Cornelis Schouten van Cleeff, named Susanna, Dieuwertgen, and Laurens Schouten. They named their sons Justus and Laurens Baeck and their son-in-law Hillebrant Bentes executors of their testament (J.F.M. Sterck, Oorkonden over Vondel en zijn kring, Bussum, 1918, pp. 330-1). Laurens Joosten Baeck died in November 1642; his wife Dieuwer Jacobs was buried on 21 December 1645 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 317).

BuyerAnthony Gommers
Buyer FamilyGommers (Gommaerts), Anthony (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was born in Mechelen about 1569. He was the nephew of Jan van den Eijnden I and of Hans van Solt II (via his wife Susanna Walraven), both important buyers at auction (R 21193 and R 21567). (On the relation to Jan van den Eijnden, see the betrothal below; on the relation to Hans van Solt and Susanna Walraven, see the chronicle on the Solt (Soldt) family in De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 35). On 4 September 1599, Antoine Gommaerts, from Mechelen, 30 years old, having lived 14 years on the Ramsluys, assisted by his uncle Jan van den Eynde, was betrothed to Susanna Walraven, 21, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by her uncles Jaques Walravens and Hans Rombouts of INVNO 200 (DTB 409/51). Jaques Walraven was also the father of Isabeau Walraven who married Franchoys Schot of R 23342 on 10 July 1597. A painting of Martha in the collection of Jacques Walraven from Amsterdam was cited by Carel van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 161). Anthony Gommers was an important merchant, active in trade with the Levant. He invested 4000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1601 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 217). He bought lots totaling 6 f. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 86/38 F 648). On 15 January 1626, he bought a house for 8,108 f. over de Raemsbrugge op de Burchwal from the heirs of Hans Rombouts. His surety was Hans van Solt (de jonge) of R 21567 (his uncle). He was taxed 350 f. in 1631, living on the Herengracht (Kohier, fol. 305, p. 70). On 7 December 1634, Anthony Gommers declared that, by reason of his age, he was resigning from the administration of De Blaeu Huis left by Hans Rombouts. Dirck van Wissel (of R 20620) would take over (NA 843, fol. 499, Not. Hoogeboom). On 22 January 1637, Anthony Gommers de oude (I) declared that, by reason of his great age (he was 65!), that he was desisting from the curatorship of the testament of Hans Rombouts and that he had appointed six men, one for each stake-holder (staeck) in the inheritance of Hans Rombouts, who were to elect one man to replace him. They had done so, and they had elected Willem Sweers (perhaps of R 30037) to that end. But Willem Sweers had died (presumably in the course of 1636) had died, and it was now necessary to appoint another individual in his place. One of the men appointed to take the place of a deceased representative of the stake-holders was Dirck van Wisselt (of R 20620) who had replaced Hans van Solt I. The appointees were: Joannes Rombouts for the stake of Jacques Rombouts; Hans van Solt (II) for the stake of Elisabeth Rombouts; Joannes Sweers, for the stake of Marie Rombouts; Carel van Penen, for the stake of Jacobmina Rombouts; Hendrick Boot, married to Catharina Sweers, the daughter of Tanneken Rombouts; Anthony Gommers II, for the stake of Cathalina Rombouts. So the six had gathered and decided to make surrogations (with the full powers of the deceased surrogated) on the basis of a majority of voices. In lieu of the late Willem Sweers, Carel van Peenen (probably II) was elected (NA 843, fol. 1441, Not. Hoogeboom). On Carel van Peenen (I and II), see the NOTES to R 20620). On 20 June 1637, Anthony Gommers I made a deposition at the request of Gulliam Sweerts II (Guglielmo Sweers I had died in 1609.) (NA 695B, film 4982). Anthony Gommers II, who was probably the grandson of Anthony Gommers I, was 37 years old in 1680. He was then married to Geertruyd Roeters, on whose life he bought some insurance in a small cooperative group (Nederlandsche Leeuw 18(1900). He was one of the regents of the Oude Mannen en Vrouwengasthuis whose group portrait was made by Adriaen Backer in 1676 (Blankert, Historisch Museum, p.15). col. 176). It was apparently this Anthony Gommers, related to the Van Soldt family, who died on 24 January 1683 (De Navorscher 84(1935).

BuyerPouwels de Vries
Buyer FamilyVries, Pouwels de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, a painter like his father Hans Vredeman de Vries, was active in Dantzig in the period 1592-1595 and in Amsterdam from 1599 to 1616. On 24 April 1601, Paulus Vredeman de Vries, from Antwerp, 34 years old, living in the Hoogstraet, assisted by his father Johan Vredeman de Vries, was betrothed to Maeycken Godelet, 32, from Antwerp, living in the Geertruydenstraet, assisted by her aunt Machtelt Corbeels and her sister Saerken Godelet (409/377, cited in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 404.) He became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1604. In the sale of the goods belong to the school teacher Joost van Looten, he bought a diamond and turquoise ring, His surety was Pieter de Bari (Bary) (cited in the NOTES to R 18942. The proceeds of the sale were remitted to Pouwels de Vries and Daniel Rogge. In 1613, Pauwels de Vries took part in the decoration of the city for the visit of princesse Elisabeth of England, on which occasion he was said to be ervaren en welbekend Metselery-schilder (cited in Briels, ibid.) He died in 1616 (ibid.) About 1 March 1629 (the exact date cannot be read due to fire damage), Maijken de Vries, widow of Paulus de Vries, 59, declared at the request of Matteken de Leeuw, wife of Alexander van der Bergh (of R 29985) that she had been present during a conversation between Daniel Mostaert, the city secretary (of R 21940) and Jasper Quingetti (of INVNO 545), which had taken place in the secretary's house. Daniel Mostaert had slammed the door to her great miscontentment (NA 834, Not. Jacob Bruyningh). Mayken Godelet, the widow of Pauwels de Vries, died in October 1648 and her death inventory was taken on 10 November 1649 (INVNO 1247).

BuyerJan van Vierhuysen
Buyer FamilyVierhuysen, Jan (Claesz.) van
Buyer NotesJan Claesz. van Vierhuysen was the son of Claes Pietersz. van Vierhuysen, who collected the tax on wine (impostmeester van de wijnen) in 1612 and of Lysbet Jans (van Hooren) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 6). In the inventory of the goods owned by Pieter Claesz. van Vierhuysen, dated 1615, a painting of Maria and Martha by Pieter Aertsen was recorded.(This inventory has not been located; it is cited in Oud Holland 7(1889), p. 18). On 3 May 1606, Claes Pietersz. van Vierhuijsen was named guardian over the children of Gerrit Jacobsz. Out by the W.K. (WK 5073/513, fol. 126). On 27 October 1607, Jan Claesz. van Vierhuijsen, 25, living on the N.Z.Voorburgwal, assisted by his father Claes Pietersz. van Vierhuijsen, was betrothed to Trijntje Cornelis Pots, 25, living on the Singel, assisted by her father Cornelis Jansz. Pot (DTB 413/38). On 28 September 1608, the couple had their daughter Lijsbet baptized in the N.K. (DTB 39/164). Jan Claesz. was apparently the brother of Aefje Claes van Vierhuysen who married Claes Wandelman of R 30408 and of Aeltge van Vierhuysen who married Jan Hendricksz. Rotgans of Alkmaar in 1605 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 173).

BuyerHarmen Huysman
Buyer FamilyHuysman, Harmen
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a merchant born in Antwerp about 1560 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). He was the son of Paschijntge Smits and of Andries Huysman, who was portrayed by Dirck Barendsz. in the company of Egbert Vinck in 1586 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p.135). The death inventory of Paschijntge Smits was taken on 1 June 1608 (NA 264). On 23 February 1589, Harmen Huijsman, merchant, and his wife Anna van Valckenburch had their daughter Sara baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pietertgen van der Heyckens (DTB 2/6). His wife was buried on 4 March 1589. She was interred in the High Choir, for which 8 f. 14 st. were paid (DTB 1042/26). Hans Hunger invested 3,000 f. on his behalf in the first subscription to the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister. Harmen Huysman bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 2 st. (GAA, 132/1 F 961). He is likely to be identical with Harmen Hustman who, together with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, signed a petition in 1608 requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, 59(1925), p. 16). He was buried on 14 August 1610 (DTB 1043/88). In July 1600, he assisted his sister Saerken, about 41 years old, when she was betrothed to Pieter Vekemans, rector of the Latin School on the Nieuwe Zijde. She was also assisted by her mother Paschijntge Smits (DTB 409/115). On 7 July 1608 Harmen Huysman's daughter Susanna was betrothed to Frederick Smits, from Cologne, assisted by Jaspar and Balthasar Coymans. Frederick Smits, who was probably related to Harmen Huysman's mother, Paschijntge Smits, was a deacon of the Lutheran community (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 233). On 20 September 1619, Fredrick and Mathijs Smit had the inventory of Jan du Piere, lace worker, temporarily absent, drawn up (NA 359A, film 4751, Notary W. Cluyt). On Jasper, or Casper, Coymans, see R 31693. On Balthasar Coymans, see the NOTES of R 32467.

Buyer NotesThe merchant Jaques (de) Molyn was the son of Hans (de) Molyn, born in Antwerp before 1580, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1596 and died after 1620. Hans de Molijn became a poorter of Amsterdam on 1 April 1596 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 308). On 11 March 1603, Jacques Molijn had his daughter Elisabeth baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Pieter van Leyden and Clarken Molyn (DTB 138/42) (no mother's name cited). On Pieter van Leijden (de oude), see R 21230. Jacob Jansz. Molijn, who is most probably identical with our buyer, was a witness at the baptism of a child of the painter Hans van Cleef of R 27385. In 1626, Jaques de Molijn sent his son to school with a French teacher named Abraham van Dale in Muiden (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 198).

On 23 August 1612, his son Ysbrant (Hermansz.) Hem, 30, living op den Dam, assisted by his aunt Lucijntje Arents (Loeff), was betrothed to Grietje Heinrix Spiegel, 22, assisted by Catrijna ten Bergh, her godmother, living on the Rouwaense Kay (DTB 667/36). Grietje Heinrix Spiegel was the daughter of Hendrick Spiegel (of R 28017) and of Brechtgen ten Bergh. Catrijna ten Bergh (Berge) was the sister of Marten ten Bergh II (the son of Marten ten Berch I and of Mette Kint), the first husband of Helena Bouwers of R 27876 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 37/15). On Catrijna ten Berge, see also the NOTES to R 28879. Ysbrant Hem was living aen 't Kerckhoff when his small child (onder arm) was buried in the N.K. on 21 July 1613 (DTB 1053/175). In 1616, Ysbrant Hem was a shooter in the company of captain Jan Jansz. Carel (de oude, of R 28890), which was portrayed by Gerrit Pietersz. in that year. His father Herman Ysbrantsz. Hem had been a member of the same company. (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, pp. 306-7.) He was a Regent of the Binnengasthuis from 1607 to at least 1617, when he was portrayed, along with six other regents, by Cornelis van der Voort (ibid. pp. 250-1). He was provisioner of the Roman Catholic Armenkantoor from 1632 to 1653. Hillebrant den Otter I must have died before 24 April 1598, when Jacob Schaep of R 30119 and Hillebrand (Florisz.) den Otter were named guardians over his children (WK 5073/513, fol. 95). Ysbrand Hermansz. was also the brother of Haafje Harmans Hem who was betrothed to Robbert van der Mije (of R 19263) on 9 June 1623 and of Arent Hem of R 27515. On 9 November 1634, Jan Noorman (II) (lumber dealer, the brother of Barent Noorman of R 30045) and Gerard van den Bergh sold a house to Ysbrant Hem and Hendrick Jansz. de jonge (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). On 1 April 1639, IJsbrant Hem, 56, made a deposition at the request of Coenradt van der Brugge, the husband of Aldegonde Wuytiers, the daughter of Bartolomeus Barcman Wuytiers (NA 1914, fol. 47). Bregitta van der Hem, the daughter of Ysbrand Hem and of Geertruid Spiegel, born in Amsterdam in 1624 (Roman Catholic), married Guillaume Belin la Garde on 9 December 1668. Belin la Garde, born in St. Malo in 1620, citizen of Amsterdam in 1649, had Philips Vingboons build him a house on the Herengracht in 1664 (Notes of Dudok van Heel, ibid. and Elias, op.cit. p. 160).
