BuyerPauwels Bisschop
Buyer FamilyBisschop, (Biscop), Pauwels (Paul)
Buyer NotesOn 18 August 1601, Paul Biscop, from London, living in London, 28, was betrothed to Elisabeth van der Moere, from Antwerp, 24, assisted by her parents Pieter van der Moer and Elisabeth Nuyts (DTB 409/435). Pieter (or Pierre) Martensz. van der Moere was a merchant, born in Antwerp about 1575, who was fist noted in Amsterdam in 1585. His son, Marten Pietersz. van der Moere, became a partner with Pauwels Bisschop in trade with Moscovy (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 308 and Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 359). Paul's brother, Jan Bisschop, born about 1561, was married to Barbara van der Moer(e). Maria van der Moere, as sister of Barbara van der Moere, married Daniel Sautijn, cited in the TEXT of R 1094 of Montias1 (Wijnroks, ibid.) (Jan Bisschop should not be confused with Jan de Bisschop of R 27711). Pauwels Bisschop remarried with Petronella van Baerle, the sister of the collector David van Baerle (of R 20459), on 22 May 1615. He was a merchant and at least an occasional art dealer. In 1608, he joined a number of other Amsterdam merchants in a petition requesting the revocation of a prohibition on the use of cashiers in effecting money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). He was buried on 10 September 1618 (DTB 1053/317). After his death, the auction sale of his possessions took place on 6 April 1620 (INVNO 575).

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Abraham Halmael]
Buyer FamilyHalmael, Abraham (van) (I)
Buyer NotesAbraham van Halmael (I), born in or near Wesel, married Sara Verbeeck before 1602 (De Nederlandsche Leeuw 56(1938), col. 89). On 24 February 1624, Abraham Halmael, widower of Sara Verbeeck, from omtrent Wesel, living on the Bierkay, was betrothed to Gertruijd Symonsdr. (DTB 669/230). His third wife was Elisabeth Santberch. He was the brother of Jacob and Isaack van Halmael, who also lived in Amsterdam, of Israel van Halmael, who lived in Rotterdam, and of Otto van Halmael who left Amsterdam with his cloth-making equipment to become a cloth finisher in Delft in or about 1633. He was noted again in Amsterdam on 28 March 1636 and died in the city (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 35), Nederlandsche Leeuw 77(1960), col. 152, and NA 414A, fol. 249). On 1 December 1666, Otto Ottosz. van Halmael (probably the son of the above-mentioned Otto van Halmael) annulled a 1666 contract he had signed with Stoffel Jansz. de Boer and Marten Michielsz. Mast, on one side, and Boris Jansz. Smit, on the other, to set up a dyeing works. Van Halmael, De Boer, and Mast now abandoned their shares in the works, for which Smit compensated them with 278 f. each (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.748). The insovent inventory of Borrit Jans Smit was drawn up on 19 August 1672 (DBK 5072/600, fol. 133 and foll.) He was probaly the son of the marine painter Jan Borritsz. Smit. Abraham's daughter Sara Halmael (1604-1675) married Warner van Lennep on 15 June 1625 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 966). His two heirs paid a tax of 43 f. 16 st. in 1631, at which time they lived on the St. Annastraet (Kohier, fol. 170 vo., p. 39). On 26 May 1635, Sr. Jacob Abrahamsz. Halmael (the son of the afore-named Abraham Halmael), merchant, was said to have incurred some debts due to his negligence, which had forced him to travel (leave Amsterdam). He now transferred all his goods to his brothers-in-law Warnaer van Lennep and Jacob Woutersz. Vries who would manage his affairs during his absence (NA 641, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) On 15 January 1637, Warnaer van Lennep, who was the brother-in-law of Jacob Abrahamsz. van Halmael, stood surety for Jacob van Halmael for a lot of tulip bulbs worth 1800 f. (NA 919, fol. 21, Not. B. J. Verbeeck, Extracten). On 23 May 1637, Warnart van Lennep apprenticed his brother-in-law Abraham van Halmael (II) with Hans van de Voort for three years. Abraham was to serve his master, both in his store and elsewhere, faithfully (NA 1466, film 1566). On Hans (Pietersz.) van der Voort, cloth dealer, see R 32585. Abraham van Halmael II set up a company to dye cloth on 3 June 1663, with Daniel Lingelot (Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), P.681). Abraham van Lennep, son of Warner van Lennep and of Sara van Halmael, lived from 1627 to 1678. He was a significant art collector, as was his brother Jan van Lennep de oude (1634-1711) (J. van der Veen in Wereld binnen handbereik, 1992, p. 322-3). Abraham's other brother, Jacob van Lennep, was married, first, to Anna van der Mersch, and, second, to Ingetje Sydervelt. Aernout van Lennep, a son from the second marriage, married Wijntje Leeuw, who may have been the sister or niece of Griete Jacobs Leeuw, the wife of Jan Claesz. Ansloo of INVNO 113. It is not clear whether Abraham van Halmael (I) was a cloth merchant, as were Abraham Isaacksz. Halmael (his nephew), who signed a petition along with other prominent cloth merchants in 1644, and his son Jacob Abrahamsz. Halmael (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 432, 596, and 620). The information on the tulip trade was given to me by Anne Goldgar, according to whom the Halmael and the Van Lennep families were Mennonite.

BuyerBartholomeus Bart
Buyer FamilyBart, Bartholomeus
Buyer NotesOn 11 October 1626, Bartolomeus Bart, merchant, bought porcelain at the sale held at the request of Anthonij Nijs (WK 5073/972). On 16 June 1637, Heyndrick Pietersz. van Dalen, the master of the glassworks in Dordrecht, had a notary notify Bartholomeus Bart that he had delivered to him 288 f. of certain glass material, of which only 64 f. 10 st. had been paid. Bart answered that he had bought nothing and had only given the insinuant some travel money (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 159).

BuyerClaes Ewoutsz.
Buyer FamilyEwoutsz., Claes (de Bont)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is the painter of that name. Claes Ewoutsz. and his brother Reynier Eewoutsz. of R 29428, were the sons of Ewout Claesz. den Bont, captain in the service of the Admiralty, and of Catharina Cornelisdr. (see INVNO 705, R 606 of Montias1). On 18 May 1609, Christophorus Hellerus, predikant in Rotterdam, appeared before a Rotterdam notary as the guardian of the child left by Gijsbertgen Gijsberts (Huyberts ?), whose father was Claes Eeuwoutsz. de Bondt, painter, living in Amsterdam and as one of the heirs of Gijsbertgen Gijsbrechts. Claes Eeuwoutsz. was to remain the administrator of his child's properties (Oud Holland 8(1890), p. 206). On 26 January 1610, Claas Eeuwouts, painter, widower of Gysbertje Huybertsdr., assisted by his brother Reynier Eeuwoutsz., was betrothed to Geertje Gysbertsdr., widow of Evert Jacobsz. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1869 and DTB 414/236). At the Haarlem lottery of 1606, Claes Eewoutsz. bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. He was then living bij de Grimmenessluijs naest de Sarck. His message was Die met pencelen maeckt op pencelen menschen na't leven, which presumably referred to his portrait painting (GAA, 22/75 F 159). He was a member of the Rederijkerskamer In Liefde Bloyende on 14 April 1615 when he appeared as witness in a deposition with Samuel Coster (rector of the Academie on the Keizersgracht), Jan Jacobsz. (Visscher), Cornelis Vis, his brother Reijnier Ewouts, Gerbrand Adriaensz. (Bredero), and Jan Jochemsz. (perhaps the carpenter, later lumber dealer and builder Jan Jochumsz. Poll), all frequenting the Camer In Liefde Bloyende, and declared at the request of the members of the Camer, that Hendrick Boelens, procureur (cited in the TEXT of R 1279), also a member, made injurious remarks about an individual had been chosen to be a member of the government (the Vroedschap of Amsterdam?) (Oud Holland, 22(1904), p. 40). (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 40.) He sems to have died before 1629, when his son Frans Claesz. de Bont, lieutenant under captain Bonars de Rott stipulated that his mother Hester Frans Molenijser would be entitled, now that his father Claes de Bont was deceased, to the rents of certain landed properties her life long. Cornelis Molenijser, painter, witnessed the act (Oud Holland 8(1890), p. 207). It is possible that Frans Claesz. was the son of a marriage of Claes Eewoutsz. that preceded his marriage with Gijbertgen Huyberts.
