BuyerAnthony van de Velde
Buyer FamilyVelde, Anthony van de
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a painter, born in Antwerp around 1557, brother of the calligrapher Hans van de Velde I of R 30502 (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 144). He was active in Amsterdam from 1590 to his death in 1616. On 23 June 1590, Anthoni van de Velde, 28, living in the Molsteech, assisted by Hans van der Velden and Nelleken van der Velden, his brother and sister, was betrothed to Tanneken Vrojmans, from Wale near Mechelen, living with Louys del Beecke, assisted by her father Jan Froymans. She was illiterate (DTB 405/307). Louys de Beecke (alias Louis del Becque) was a cloth merchant from Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1587 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 295). Jan Froymans is likely to be related to members of the Vromans family, painters in Delft (including Jan Pietersz. Vromans, noted in Delft in 1629) (Montias, Artists and Artisans in Delft, pp. 115, 335-6, etc..) Anthony van de Velde, painter from Antwerp, became a citizen of Amsterdam on 21 October 1591 (Obreen, Archief 2(1879-1880), p. 274). On 10 February 1612, Esaias Wilbout, from Norwich, paiter, 29, living in Haarlem, was betrothed to Sara van de Velde, 19, living in the Betaniestraet, assisted by her father Antonie van de Velde (Oud Holland 4(1886), p.300). On 14 February 1613, Joannes, son of Esayas Wilbout and Sara van de Velde, was baptized in the presence of Anna Romens and Antony van de Velde (ibid. p.301). When Abigael, the daughter of Esayas Wilbout and Sara van de Velde, the daughter of Anthony van de Velde, was baptized on 11 August 1624, Anneken Froymans, Gerrit Linckenborch and Abygael van de Velde were witnesses (ibid.) Anneken Froymans is probably identical with Tanneken Vroijmans. On Hans van de Velde (I), see R 30502.

BuyerAdriaen Andriesz.
Buyer FamilyAndriesz. (Andriessen), Adriaen (II)
Buyer NotesAdriaen Andriessen I, merchant in Antwerp, later in Middelburg, was married to Anne van Nispen, born in Dordrecht. Anna van Nispen was already a widow when she became a member of the Reformed Community on 11 January 1604. On 2 June 1609, she gave a procuration to her cousin Anthony Jaspersz. van Surck (or Zurick) (of INVNO 561) to collect funds she had inherited from her father Geerit van Nispen (Anthony van Surck was married to Maria Thibaut, the daughter of Margariet van Nispen and Hendrick Thibaut) (Nederlandsche Leeuw 100(1983), p. 235 and the TEXT of R 447 of Montias1). Thus the buyer is likely to be Adriaen Andriessen II, born in Antwerp about 1575, who married Maria Codde on 16 January 1605. He was the brother of Claes Andriessen cited below. It is not clear what his relation was to Adriaen Andriessen I. (Note that Andriessen I was Reformed and Andriessen II was Roman Catholic). On 21 July 1608, Adriaen Andriessen, merchant in Amsterdam, signed a contract to freight a ship to transport salt, on behalf of his brother Claes Andriessen, and sharing the risks and profits de rato (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), pp. 449-450). On 28 and 29 July 1616, the same individuals signed contracts for the freighting of three ships (Winkelman, op.cit. 185(1983), pp. 464-5). Claes Andriessen freighted 11 ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek, 17(1931), p. 268). Adriaen Andriessen and Maria Codde were the parents of the poet Pieter Codde (1605/1606-c. 1667). Maria was the sister of Roeloff Codde of R 7591 and of Marten Codde of R 21399. On these family relationships, see Oud Holland, 2(1884), p. 44. It is probably Adriaen Andriessen II who paid a tax of 90 f. in 1631, living on the N.Z. Ooster Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 273vo, p. 63). On 10 March 1636, the honorable Anna Pieters Codde, widow of Adriaen Andriesz. (II), assisted by the notary (Van Zwieten) named her son Pieter Codde to appear before the directors of the Bultsloot Dijckagie in the land of Holsteyn and there to transfer some land to Mr. Trajanis de Magistris (the guardian of the painter Jan Jansz. Uyl) (NA 889, film 595). In 1608, Adriaen Andriessen (I), together with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers ( Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16).

BuyerClaes Jansz. Geus
Buyer FamilyGeus, Claes Jansz.
Buyer NotesClaes Jansz. Geus was the behuwde mach (a relative by marriage) of Hans van de Velde, the owner of the goods in the present inventory. He was said to be a dienaer van het Admiraliteits Collegie (employee of the Admiralty College), living in the Prinsen Hof, when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. for the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 26/33 F 182). On 31 July 1619, Hendrick van Bronckhorst de jonge (II), 31, living in Weesp, declared at the request of Herman Hendricksz. Swol, in the name of Mary Jans, widow Hendrick Jansz. Swol, his brother (?), that a few years ago a sum had been deposited in the Orphan Chamber for one year on behalf of Hendrick Jansen Swol, under guarantee of Jan Adriaensz. Cant, which belonged to Claes Jansz. Geus (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 21 April 1617, Jan Claesz. Geus, who was probably his son, was betrothed to Trijntje Adriaens Smouts (DTB 763/55). Trijntje was the presumed daughter of the Calvinist preacher Adriaen Smout.

BuyerStoffel Grylich in den Apendans in de Kalverstraet.
Buyer FamilyGrylich (Greylich), Stoffel
Buyer NotesOn 13 August 1605, Christoffel Greylich, from Rattigborn, painter, about 33 years old, having lived for 10 years on the Calverstraet, was betrothed to Helena Badens, from Antwerp, 29, having lived for 20 years in the aforesaid place, assisted by her mother Maeyken Badens (DTB 411/566, cited in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 332). Helena was a sister of the painter Francois Badens (of R 28057). Helena's other brother, the painter Carel Badens, was living in the Apendans in the Kalverstraet when he bought lots in the 1606 Haarlem lottery (GAA 47/16 F 376). On 6 May 1629, Charel Badens and Catrijne Nijs had their son Frans baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Heyltje Greylich, who was probably Christoffel's sister (DTB 41/22). Christoffel Greylich passed testaments on 30 August 1618 and 13 October 1635. He and his wife left 300 f. to the poor of the Reformed Religion and named Mayken Badens their universal legatee. In case of her death, the sister of Helena, named Lysbeth Badens, married to Hans Rydens, was to inherit half the assets and her brother Carel Badens, the other half (Briels, ibid.) Carel Badens, however, died soon afterwards. On 10 March 1636, Willem Nijs, broker, and his wife Jannetge Rees, father and mother of Cathalijne Nijs, the widow of Carel Badens, who is no longer in possession of her mind, on one side, and Christopher Grylich, as husband of Heijltjen (Helena) Badens, and Mayken Badens (apparently the mother of Francois, Carel, and Helena Badens), assisted by Christoffer Grijlich, were said to be the heirs of Carel Badens. Willem Nijs stood to inherit some goods, including silver, two gold rings, and a diamond ring estimated at 150 f. No works of art were cited (NA 911, Not. Eyloff).

BuyerPieter Crabbe inde Warmoesstraet
Buyer FamilyCrabbe, Pieter
Buyer NotesOn 13 May 1615, Pierre Crabbe and Susanne Crabbe had their daughter Marguerite baptized in the F.K. in the presence of Bartolomeus Block and Daniel Crabbe (DTB 130/9). On 16 April 1623, Piere Crabbe and Susanne Desiede had their son Daniel baptized in the presence of Isaac de Siede and Marieke Huybrechts (DTB 130/148). On 27 January 1628, Pieter Crabbe, from Amsterdam, widower of Susanna de Sijde, living in the Warmoesstraet, goldsmith, was betrothed to Sara van Hertsvelt, from Dordrecht, widow of Pieter van den Waeten (DTB 432/542). On 23 June 1633, Pieter Krabbe and his wife Sara van Hartsvelt had their son Jacobus baptized in the presence of Bijatrix van der Heede (DTB 6/371). The death inventory of Beatrix van der Heede, who was apparently the wife of Jan de Vos of R 29666, was taken on 3 September 1640 (NA 413, film 1381). In the pre-nuptial contract between the painter Anthony Waterlo and Cathalyntge Stevens van den Dorpe of 4 April 1640, Pieter Crabbe appeared as a witness for the bridegroom. He was said to be a friend of the swager Jean de Cambre. It should be noted that Catharina Stevens van den Dorpe was the widow of the painter Elias Homis, who in turn was the brother of Anna Hoomis who married the painter Paulus van Hillegaert of R 20158 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 1803, 1808). On 18 May 1628, Abraham, son of Elyas Gomis (Homis) and Catlyn van Dorp, was baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Eerlant Lamberts and Abraham Gomis (Homis). On the baptism of Jasper Homis, see above. (Bredius, op. cit., Nachträge, p. 117). The two children of the painter Elias Hoomis (or Hommes) stood to inherit 4,200 f. after their father's death. One of the assets left by Homis was an obligation issued by Anthoni Waterlo, painter, for 533 f. (WK 5073/789, appearance dated 23 October 1637). Anthoni Waterloo was the first husband of Catharina Stevens van den Dorp (see below). Anneke Hoomis was a witness at the baptism of Jasper, son of Helias Homis (the painter) and Catlyntjen van den Dorpe on 25 August 1630 (along with Jasper de Meert and Frederick de Buckere) (Bredius, ibid., p. n118). On Frederick de Buckere, see the NOTES to R 29423. On 13 June 1635, Elias Hommes, painter, and Jacob Claesz., wine distributor, acting on the basis of a procuration obtained from Jasper de Maert, wine dealer, named the goldsmith Bruijn Claesz. to collect a debt in Utrecht from Willem Paeu and Roeloff van Diemen on Maert's behalf (NA 1184, fol. 111, Not. J. de Vos). On 17 October 1638, Cornelis Adriaensz. Mondes (?) insinuated Pieter Crabbe concerning some small obligations (NA 751, fol.641). On 10 May 1650, Jasper (or Casper) Homis, said to be a young man from Amsterdam, together with Pieter Nijs II (the son of Pieter Nijs I of R 20779) left Rotterdam, with the intention of travelling in France. But they spent some time in Leuven because they could get work for their art there. The two friends later travelled to Ceulen and Franfort (Oud Holland 3(1885), pp. 238-9). On 21 April 1651, Johannes Croon, painter, from Amsterdam, assisted by his father Gerrit (Dircx) Croon, signed a wedding contract with Elisabeth Homis, assisted by her mother Catharyna Waterloo (nee van den Dorpe), her stepfather Anthony van Waterloo, and her cousin Hendrick van Aecken (Bredius, op.cit. p. 845). Earlier, on 21 February 1630, Gerrit Dircx Croon had appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his three children with his late wife, [....] (WK 5073/789). Elisabeth Hoomis, born in 1633, remarried with the painter Marcus Kortz. After Kortz's death, she once again remarried with the painter Jan van den Broeck, from Haarlem, widower of Immetje Rutgers, on 9 January 1665 (Bredius, op.cit. , Nachträge p. 118). She died before 1 July 1682 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.1803). The daughter of Elisabeth Hoomis and Casparus Hoomis (born 1630), named Helena Croon, married the painter Arent Swart (Bredius, op.cit., p.1803).

BuyerLouijs Elle
Buyer FamilyElle, Louijs (Dircx.?)
Buyer NotesLouis Dircx Elle was a courantist (a compiler of news for distribution in the handwritten ancestors of newspapers), from 1590 to 1624; a notary, cited as such in 1590 and 1591; and a procuror (attorney) of the Admiralty, noted in 1587, 1595, and 1596. He is not identical with the peintre ordinaire du roi (de France), Louis Elle, who was the son of the painter Ferdinand Elle, established in Paris since the 16th century (Toliopolou, L'art et les artistes des Pays Bas a Paris au 17eme siecle, Unpublished thesis, Universite de Paris, 1991, typescript, pp.8-9). It is probable, however, that the two men belonged to the same family. By 1626, Manuel, the son of Louis Dircx Elle, had taken over his activities as courantier (A. Stolp, De eerste couranten, 1938, p.58). Louis Dircx was the brother-in-law of the buyer Paulus (Pauwelsz.) van der Cley (of R 43863). Louis Elle Dierix was already widower of Jenne Moyenson when he remarried with Petronella Pauwels, from Antwerp, 25 on 21 July 1590. He was said to be from Brugge, living in the Servietsteechgen, and to be a notary. On 19 November 1596, Rutger Hudde, merchant in Amsterdam, named Loys Elle, procureur before the Council of the Admiralty in Amsterdam to defend his interests (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 413). On 30 June 1612 (thus three years after the present lot was bought), he assisted his son Louys Elle Louyszoon, on the occasion of his betrothal with Agniete Dirxdr. from Utrecht. Louis de jonge was said to be a spiegelmacker (maker of mirrors), about 23 years old (DTB 416/209). He also sold frames (or exchanged them against prints) as far as Delft (he owed Pieter van den Landen in Delft 30 f., probably for prints, for which he was expected to send him frames) (Van den Landen died on 27 September 1636 and his inventory was drawn soon after (Delft GA 1705)). When Louis Elle Dircksz. and Petronella Pauwels had their son Israel baptized in the N.K. on 2 April 1613, the witness was Annetje Jans, who was presumably Petronella's sister (DTB 39/314). When their child Louys (III) was baptized on 11 November 1614, the witness was Nelletje Wijs (DTB 39/366). When Pieternelle (II) was baptized on 3 July 1618, Nelletje Elle was a witness (DTB 40/11). Whwn their son Mouris was baptized on 17 September 1620, the witnesses were Nelletgen Louwys and Manuel Elle, the brother of Louis Elle de jonge (DTB 5/328). Petronelle Elle (I), probably identical with Nelletje Elle just cited, was betrothed to Paulus van Cleij in 1622 when she was 23 years old (R 20050). On 29 December 1636, Angnieta Dircx, former seller of prints (cunstvercopster), widow of Louys Elle (II), living in the Elantstraet, over 't bosch van Moscovie, declared that her husband had left her an aggrieved (bedroefte) widow, with six fatherless children. She hereby abandoned her possessions to her creditors (NA 315, film 6379, Not. F. van Banckem). On 23 October 1637, Roelandt Elle, stuerman (pilot of a boat), uncle and guardian of Jan Pauwelsz. van de Kley, the son left by Nelletie Elle, his late sister, who was married with Pauwels Jansz. (van der Cley), goldsmith (the nephew of Paulus Dircx van der Cleij), gave a procuration to Israel Dele, his mother's son, caerten afsetter (map illuminator) (NA 751, film 5178, fol. 613). Roelandt Elle was 43 years old in 1638.

Buyer FamilyHanswyck, Claes van
Buyer NotesClaes van Hanswyck was said to be the swager (brother-in-law, possibly father-in-law) of (Cornelis) de Bailleur, whose full name is cited in R 29097. On 10 January 1608, Niclaas van Hanswyck, 21 years old, assisted by his mother Erm Claesdr. and his uncle Jan Claesz., was betrothed to Maria Dierks Rodenborch, 19, assisted by Dirck Rodenburgh, baillu of Amstelland, her father, and Cornelia Bartolotti, her mother (DTB 413/97). Claes van Hanswyck was the son of Hans van Hanswyck I (of R 31647) and of Erm Claesdr. On 19 October 1608, Claes van Hanswyck and Maria Dircks had a child baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Dirck Rodenburgh, baillu, and Erm Claes (DTB 4/259). On 22 August 1610, the couple had their son Dierck baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Andries van den Broeck and of Kornelia Rodenborchs (DTB 4/324). Andries van den Broeck (of R 28792) was married to Baijke van Hanswijck, the presumed sister of Claes van Hanswijck. On Dirck Rodenburgh and Cornelia van den Heuvel, called Bartolotti, see Elias, Vroedschap, p. 35. Rodenburgh was baillu and dijkgraaf (reeve) of Amstelland. Cornelis de Bailleur may possibly be identical with the Flemish painter of that name. Claes Hanswyck was buried in the O.K. on 12 July 1629 (DTB 1045/14).

BuyerArtus de klockspelder
Buyer FamilyGeerdincx, Artus (de klockspelder)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Artus Geerdincx, was clock player in the Oude Kerck in Amsterdam (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 47). On 3 October 1598, Artus Geerdingh, from Antwerp, beyerman deser stede (bell ringer of this city), 31 years old, living in the O.Z. Kerckhoff, assisted by Franssen Felbier (I), was betrothed to Anneken Coesters, from Antwerp, 29, assisted by her nephews Pieter Koster and Daniel Mostart (DTB 408/396). Daniel Mostart, the witness, was the father of Daniel Mostart II of R 21940. Francois Fellebier (I) was a silk cloth dealer of Antwerp origin (NA 563A, 2 June 1634 and Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 300). He died before 16 October 1637 when his widow Dorothea Pieters, mother of 8 children, whose father was Frans Felbier, appeared before the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/789, fol. 250). Francois Felbier I paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Cingel (Kohier fol. 12vo, p.5). The following documents presumably refer to Francois Felbier II, the son of Francois Felbier I, who apparently owed Molenaer for paintings delivered. On 20 November 1641, Johannes (Miense) Molenaer had a notary notify Franchoys Felbier of the following facts: On the 19th of the month he had requested and received from the aldermen an order impounding a shipment of goods that Felbier had received from Moscovy and had them deposited in a neutral warehouse, of which the notary had the key. On the 26 of November, Molenaer insinuated Felbier again, claiming that Felbier had had the goods removed in secret and that he wanted to know where they were. Felbier's sister answered that Francois Felbier was still a minor and could not do business without the consent of his mother. She claimed that Molenaer had shamefully cheated him (her brother). The goods, which belonged to her mother, had been brought to a neutral place on the Achterburgwal near the Gasthuismolenbrug (Obreen's Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 7(1888-1890), p.291). Francoys Felbier I was also the father of Joost Fellebier (II), who was 22 years old when he was betrothed to Annetie Visschers, the daughter of the print-maker Claes Jansz. Visscher, on 31 August 1646 (Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 223). On 15 June 1600, Artus Garding and Tanneken Costers had their son Harmen (of R 33623) baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Sytgen Matheus (DTB 3/237). On 28 February 1608, Artus Geerdinck and Anneken Geerdinck had their son baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Daniel Bueckelaer, Hans Vorsten, and Anneken Felbiers (DTB 4/232). Hans Vorsten was the father of Daniel Vorsten of R 32387. Annetje, the widow of Art Gerdijnck, was buried on 26 September 1630 (DTB 1045/28). She was the full niece of Antony Nijs (1544-1626) and was thus related to the latter's son Anthony Nijs II of R 7616. The identically named Artus Geerdinx (1640-1692), son of Herman Geerdinx of R 33623, carillon player and clavecin-maker, was a merchant and collector of naturalia. Artus Geerdincks I was also the father of Herman Geerdincks of R 33623 (I. van Eeghen Het geslacht Nijs ... Jaarboek Amstelodamum 60 (1968), p. 97.)

Buyersolvit [crossed out: Jan Sieuwertsz.]
Buyer FamilySieuwertsz., Jan (Kolm ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Jan Sieuwertsz. Kolm (1590-1637), born in Amsterdam in the Nes, painter, poet, author of five plays, including tragedies (Nederlants Treur-spel, 1616), member of the Rederijkerskamer 't Wit Lavendel in 1613, and coopmansbode op Antwerpen (Truusje Goedings, Een bijzonder rederijkersmanuscript, Het Gedenckboeck van de schilder Jan Sieuwertsz Kolm in GAA, Archiefstukken, het Gemeentearchief Amsterdam honderdvijftigjaar, p.66). On 17 November 1616, Jan Sijwertsen Colms, from Amsterdam, painter, widower of Anna Seroije, living near the Snoeckjesbrugh, was betrothed to Fijtjen Lindeman, 21 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 79). On 29 March 1627, Jan Silvertsz. Colm, replacing [...] Cornelis Seijl and Cornelis Jacobsz., co-heirs with him of the estate of Hans Lindeman, who was respectively their uncle and father-in-law, named Willem Selijns, living in Riga, to collect money due to the estate (NA 661, fol. 115, Not. J. Warnaerts). Hans Lindeman was presumbly the father of Kolm's wife Fijtjen Lindemam. Willem Selijns (III), living in Riga, owed a debt of 3,126 f. to the estate of Willem Seulijns (I) of INVNO 1197. On 16 May 1635, Kolm was said to be a co-guardian of the children from a later marriage (naerkinderen) of Jan Jansz. van Nieuwlandt and Lysbeth Gerrits (NA 991, fol. 52vo., Not. J. Bosch). At some point, Kolm seems to have remarried with Jannetgen Davids. On 11 November 1638, Jannetgen Davids, with her chosen guardian Wessel Backer (of R 21468), presented her three children -- Syvert, 5, Heyltge, 4, and Fytgen, 3--whose late father was Jan Syvertsz. Colm, to the Orphan Chamber and declared that the children were entitled to 798 f. 13 st. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789).
