BuyerMarten Gaillart
Buyer FamilyGaillart, Marten (Cornelisz.)
Buyer NotesMarten Gaillart was a merchant and silk cloth dealer of South Netherlandish origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 303). He was the brother of Jeroen Cornelisz. Gaillart of R On 9 August 1597, Marten Gaillardt, 26 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his father Cornelis Gaillart (I) and by his mother Lijnken van der Ponte (?), was betrothed to Judith Fransens, 24, assisted by her mother Neelken Jacobs (DTB 665/1). Cornelis Gaillart (or Gaillard) I was frequently cited in the documents of the 1590s as an insurer and as a freighter (e.g. Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 178(1981), p. 47). Marten was the brother of Jeroen Gaillardt of R 21403 and the cousin of Pieter Gaillardt of R 26876 and of Anthony Gaillardt de jonge of R 22087. He acted as surety for Anthony Gaillard de jonge when the latter bought one of the two houses that had belonged to his father for 2220 f. and another for 8260 f. (WK 5073/913). In 1631, he was taxed 80 f., at which time he lived in the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 167 vo., p. 39). On 10 September 1636, Jan de Hertogh, merchant in Leyden, asked prompt payment from Marten Gaillart of 96 f. for silk delivered (NA 521, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). An individual named Marten Gaillart died in Coningsberg in Prussia before 29 March 1636 (NA 642, fol. 159). The following individual named Marten Gaillart may be the second of this name, possibly Marten Gaillart I. On 4 May 1637, Cornelis Gaillart (II), silk cloth merchant, had a notary insinuate Marten Gaillart, likewise merchant, concerning the silk cloth winckel of his son, the insinuant, who claimed that the winckel was part of his wedding dowry (huwelijcken goed) (NA 597, Notary Lamberti). Judith Eelkens, the wife of Marten Gaillart (II?), was buried on 25 August 1643 (DTB 1046/22vo). Cornelis Gaillart II married Elisabeth Bouwers, a daughter of Melchior Bouwer

BuyerHans van Solt
Buyer FamilySolt (Soldt), Hans van (de oude, I)
Buyer NotesHans van Solt de oude, born in Antwerp before 1567 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base), left his native city after its fall to Parma in 1585. He spent some time in London, where he was noted in 1586-7 and 1593-4. He was a deacon of the Reformed Church in London and an elder in 1594. He married Elisabeth Rombouts, daughter of Willem Rombouts and of Catharina Reygers (Spies and Bok, Fragment of the Van Solt Genealogy). He was first noted in Amsterdam in 1602 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314). He was the father of Hans van Solt II (de jonge), who was also a buyer at auction (R 21567). The procureur Lenard Sweert de jonge invested 3,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 on behalf of Hans van Solt I, as well as another 3,000 f. each on behalf of Paulus and Francina van Solt (I), widow, respectively the brother and sister of Hans van Solt. Paulus van Solt was the grandfather of Clara van Solt, married to Jan Ramaker (see the TEXT of R 613 of Montias1). Lenard Sweert was first married to Anna Rombouts, the daughter of Hans Rombouts of INVNO 200. He was related to Hans van Solt I via the latter's wife Elisabeth Rombouts. His son Willem and his brother Manuel Sweerts were buyers at auction (R 30037 and R 29288 resp.) Paulus van Solt was the son of Jacques van Solt (probably Hans van Solt I's father). He left for the East Indies in April 1601 and died on his way back (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 35). Francina van Solt I, who should not be confused with Hans van Solt II's sister Francine van Solt II who was buried on 21 February 1628, was apparently a sister of the buyer. She married Abraham Verbeeck, the brother of Jacques Verbeeck of INVNO 544, as a widow and died on 27 March 1612 (De Navorscher loc. cit. p. 36). Hans van Solt de oude had an account of 2 folios at the Wisselbank in 1609, 3 in 1612, 4 in 1615 and 5 in 1620 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 224). In 1608, he joined a number of Amsterdam merchants in a petition to the burgomasters calling for the revocation of a prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 16). He was domiciled near the Doelen, when he paid a tax of 800 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 247, p. 57). He was buried on 20 December 1633 (Spies and Bok, loc. cit.) His children, besides Hans van Solt de jonge and Francine van Solt II, were: 1) Elisabeth van Solt, married, first, Isaack Haeck (of R 20211) in 1608 and, second, Abraham Spiers (the father of Jan Spiers of R 23553). 2) Catharina van Solt, born in Antwerp about 1581, married Abraham Seeuwens, probably of R 29592, in 1603 see the NOTES to R 29592); 3) Susanna van Solt, born in London about 1586, married Pieter Loos (or Loots) in 1604. She was the author of the first Reformed music book in 1599 when she was 12 or 13 years old (Jongepier, J., Hans van Nieuwkoop and Willem Poot, Orgels in Noord Holland, 1990, p. 12, cited in Mia Margaret Mochizuki, The Reformation of Devotional Art and the Great Church in Haarlem, Ph. D. Dissertation, Yale University, 2001, p. 457). On Pieter Loos, see Montias, Vermeer and his Milieu, pp. 19-20). 4) Willem (or Gulielmo) van Solt, born in London about 1593, was betrothed to Barbara Schuijl on 19 June 1618. 5) Maria van Solt (I), who married, first the merchant Jan Bocx and, after his death Gabriel Nicolaj (WK 5073/789, 12 September 1629); Maria died before 1637; 6) Hester van Solt, who died in Amsterdam on 19 February 1665 (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 40). (On Barbara Schuijl and her sisters Maria and Margriet, see the NOTES to R 20339). And 7) David van Solt (I), who sailed to Moscovy on 19 June 1618 and returned from there on 24 October 1618 (Spies and Bok, loc. cit.; see also De Navorscher 34(1935), p. 38). On 30 June 1632, Hans Loos, the son left by the late Susanna van Soldt, procreated by the late Pieter Loos, acknowledged that he had received and approved the accounting made by his grandfather Hans van Soldt de oude for his portion of the testamentary legacies left to him by his greatuncle Hans Rombouts and his greataunt Francine van Soldt (NA 843, fol. 179, Not. Hoogeboom). For a dispute that arose over the inheritance from Hans van Solt de oude, see the NOTES to R 21567. On 7 June 1635, Hans Loos, merchant, took on Jan Sewrynsz. for 12 years as his apprentice, to whom he undertook to teach the mercantile trade (NA 372, fol. ca. 51, Not. W. Cluyt).

BuyerManuel Sweerts op de N.Z. Achterburchwal
Buyer FamilySweerts, Manuel
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Emanuel Sweerts, was a botanist, droughtsman and engraver, born in Zevenbergen around 1552 and died in Amsterdam in 1612. He offered flower bulbs for sale in the annual market and published a Florilegium in 1612 in Frankfort/am/Main as a sort of flower catalogue (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 388.) Nicolaes Sweerts, living on the Achterburchwal in the house of Manuel Sweerts, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 90/49 F 680). Maria van der Beecke, wife of the procuror Leenert Sweerts I, who lived behind the Nieuw Kerck, also bought shares in the lottery. This Leenert Sweerts is likely to have been the second of this name, in view of the following betrothal record. On 8 August 1593 Lenardt Swerius, from Antwerp, widower of Anna Rombouts, assisted by his brother Jacob Zwerius (Sweers), was betrothed to Susanna Crayborn, from Antwerp, 44, living on the N.Z. Kerkhoof, assisted by Davidt Mostaert, her brother-in-law (?) (DTB 406/388, cited in Briels, ibid.) Susanna Crayborn was the aunt of Susanna Clayborn Willems who was married to the painter Pieter Isaacksz. (see the TEXT of R 523 of Montias1). The procuror Lenert Sweerts (II?), perhaps the son of Lenert Sweerts I, later married Constantia van Gheel, the sister of Daniel (R 31393) and Hans van Gheel III. Their daughter Maria, born in 1621, married Johannes de Haze, baptized on 3 March 1615, on 12 October 1638 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 600). At the death of Lenert Sweerts (II). which occurred on 25 October 1622, his children inherited 54,000 f. (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 37 and WK 5073/789, 12 January 1623). BuyerMaximiliaen naest Jan de Vrij
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Maximiliaen van Geel of R 21282. Jan de Vrij is probably Jan Egbertsz. de Vrij, burgomaster in 1596, 1598, 1601, 1603, 1604, and 1606 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 37). Maximiliaen van Geel lived on the Warmoesstraet in 1595 as well, presumably, as at the time of this sale (see the notes to R 21282). Jan Egbertsz. de Vrij also lived in the Warmoesstraet (in de Ketel) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 36). Note that, by 1612, Maximiliaen van Geel had moved to the Rockin (R 21282).

BuyerAert Anthonisz. schilder in de Nes
Buyer FamilyAnthonisz., Aert
Buyer NotesThe buyer, painter of marines, 1580-1620, was active in Amsterdam from 1591 to 1620. According to Briels (Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 111), he was also an art dealer. On 9 August 1603, Aert Anthonisz., from Antwerp, 23 years old, painter, living (for the last 12 years) next to the Reguliersgracht in the Niewstadt, assisted by his mother Aeghien Aerts, was betrothed to Baycken Coutermans, from Mechelen, 25, living (for the last 9 years) in the Pieter Jacobssteech, assisted by Heyndrick Coutermans and Jannetgen Claes, his parents (DTB 40/514, cited in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 293). Hendrick Koetemans was a gilder from Leuven (ibid.) Aert Anthonisz. became a citizen of Amsterdam on 6 April 1604. On 23 May 1604, Aert Anthonisz. and Beyke Koetermans had their daughter baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hendrick Coetermans and Aechien Aertsdr. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1 of Nachträge). On 1 August 1614, Artus Anthonisz. gave a procuration to his wife Maycken Cothemans to collect an inheritance from a lay-nun (bagijn) in Mechelen (Bredius, ibid.) After the death of his first wife, he remarrried with Barbel Henrix. On 17 January 1616, the couple had their daughter Katlijn baptized in the presence of Willem Kick and of Anneken Vroijmans, probably of the Vromans family of painters, some of whom settled in Delft, DTB 5/173). Willem Cornelisz. Kick, from Breda, made lackered and gilded furniture (cabinetgens and comptoirkens), some of which were offered as part of the States Generals' gift to the Sultan in Constantinople in 1612 (Oud Holland, 1(1883), p. 182 and Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 71). In a document of 20 November 1625, he was said to be the inventor of certain copper forms (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 585). He was the father of the painter Sijmon Kick and the brother of Jan Cornelisz. Kick (of R 20238). Aert Anthonisz., schilder, was buried in the Z.K. on 7 September 1620 (Bredius, op.cit. p. 2 of Nachträge). He was the father of the marine painter Hendrick van Anthonissen of R 23267.

BuyerPieter de Nijemey
Buyer FamilyNijemey (Nimay), Pieter de
Buyer NotesOn 5 October 1596, Pierre de Nijmegen (signs Nimay), from Antwerp, 23, living near the Lange Brugge, assisted by Henri de Nymege, his father, and Elisabeth de Simmerij, his mother, was betrothed to Agnietie Faukonnier, from Doornik, 23, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by Susanna Gabry (DTB 408/81). Despite the confusion between Nijmegen and Nimay, there is no doubt that this is the act of betrothal of Pieter de Nimay. Pieter was the brother of Jean de Nimay of R 29522 and of Samuel de Nimay of R 23590. In 1613, Pierre de Nimay was portrayed among 17 shooters under Captain Geurt van Beuningen by Jan Tengnagel (Rijksmuseum, All the Paintings in the Rijksmuseum, p. 535.) On 8 November 1637, Jan Galand van Yperen in Flanders, 24, testified at the request of Anna Fauconnier, widow of Pieter de Nieumaij, that he had gone as a sailor (bootsgesel), in company with Pieter de Nimaij, on a ship of the V.O.C., of the Chamber of Enckhuysen, to the Piscadores Islands (present-day Taiwan) to carry on business. A Chinese pirate ship had supervened, and Pierre de Nimay had remained (is gebleven). He had apparently died in that encounter. The witness signed Jean Galand (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). On 15 January 1638, Samuel de Nimay, 45 (Pieter's brother), and Abraham Fauconnier, 38, (his cousin) testified at the request of Ageniet Fauconnier, widow of Pieter de Nimay, that the requirante had three daughters who were heirs ab intestato of Pierre de Nimay de jonghe (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). There seems to have been a third individual named Pieter de Nimay (III). On 29 November 1639, Jan Schepers, glass dealer, 54, Menne Olberts, satincord dealer, 50, Jan Martsz., apple gauger, Jan Jansz. Belterman, ebony wood worker, 34, and Hendrick Claesz. Plaet, fur worker, 24, all living in the St. Lucienstraet, declared at the request of Pieter de Nimay that they never heard anything but good about the producent (de Nimay) (NA 1276, Not. Pieter Barcman).

BuyerHuych Jansz. besyden Hooft
Buyer FamilyJansz., Huych (van Crayesteyn)
Buyer NotesThe house of Hugh Jansz. was located next door to that of former Burgomaster Cornelis Pietersz. Hooft in February 1617, near the house of Rem Egbertsz. Bisschop, on the Bergstraet, by the Singel or Warmoesgracht, which was plundered in February 1617 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p.. 463). Hugh Jansz. van Crayesteyn was born in 1578 and died in 1638. He was a good friend of the poet and dramatist Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, the son of Cornelis Pietersz. Hooft, next to whom he was living when he bought the present lot (De briefwisseling van Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, H. W. van Tricht ed., vol. 2, pp. 168-9). Huych Jansz. van Craijesteijn, merchant in Amsterdam, was married to Grietgen Ghijsberts Born, the sister of Anneken Ghijsberts, the wife of Jan Heickens of R 30667 (see the NOTES to that record). He may be identical with the Amsterdam merchant Huch or Huyck Jansen who freighted 6 ships between 1601 and 1608, 5 ships between 1609 and 1616, and one ship in 1617 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 601, 185(1983), p. 629, and vol. 186, p. 63.) In 1613, Hugh Jansz. van Craijestein was regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuijs (Tricht, op. cit. p. 169). On 3 March 1617, Pieter Wybrantsz. Can, Jan Wybrantsz. Can, and Huygh Jansz., all sworn brokers, contracted to form a company to pool their profits (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G, 78(1933), p. 231). On 27 April 1618, Jan Meynema, 60, and Jan Wybrantsz. (probably Can), 51, declared at the request of Andries Bicker, as husband and guardian of Trijntgen Jans, his wife, that, together with Jan Hermansen, Jan den Eynden, and Cornelis Jansz., they had been freighters of a certain ship (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning).

BuyerClaes Jacobsz. Roch
Buyer FamilyRoch, Claes Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesOn 13 November 1608, Claes Jacobsz. Roch, 24 years old, living on the Gelderse Kay, assisted by his father Jacob Claesz., was betrothed to Lysbeth Pieters, living on the Zeedijck, assisted by her sister Grietgen Pieters (DTB 413/322). Jacob Claesz., born in 1545, merchant, was married to Anna Harckesdr. He had an account of 2 folios at the Wisselbank. Jacob and his company invested 16,000 f. in the first subscription for V,O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 224). It was probably the brother of Claes Jacobsz., named Jacob Jacobsz. Roch, who paid a tax of 75 f. (living near the Zeedijck) (Kohier, fol. 138, p. 32). Jacob Jacobsz. Roch (1586-1678) was an outstanding merchant who became a Lieutenant of the Amsterdam militia (Jaarboek C.B.G. 21(1967, pp. 58-59). Claes Jacobsz. Roch, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted a ship with Hendrick Druyff in 1608, 6 ships between 1609 and 1616, and 9 ships between 1617 and 1625 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 184(1983), p. 602, 185(1983), p. 630, and vol. 186. p. 779.) A brother of Jacob Claesz., named Symon Claesz. Roch, married to Maritge Anthonis of Alkmaar, died before 16 January 1602 when his goods were auctioned by the Orphan Chamber (INVNO 1098). On 26 July 1602, Jacob Claesz. Roch was named guardian over his children (WK 5073/513, fol. 105vo.). Erm Claesdr. Ro(o)ch, the wife of Hans van Hanswyck of R 31647, was the daughter of Claes Jacobsz. Ro(o)ch. Another brother, Frerick Claesz. Roch, wine dealer in den vergulde Roch in the Warmoestraet, born about 1540, invested 4,800 f. in the first subscription to the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 123). Frederick Claesz. Roch was the father of Duyfge Fredericks Roch, the first wife of Isaack van Gherwen of INVNO 237, and of Maria Fredericks Roch, who died in 1652 (INVNO 236). He was also the father of Claes Fredericksz. Roch, born about 1570, who was mentioned as a collector by Karel van Mander (Bredius in Amsterdamsch Jaarboekje 1897, p. 55). Finally, Mr. Hercules Jacobsz. Roch, the son of Jacob Claesz. Roch and of Anna Harckes (or Hercules), baptized in the O.K. on 14 June 1598 and buried on 3 September 1648, married Sara Valckenier, daughter of Cornelis Jansz. Valckenier of R 26517. He was a member of the Vroedschap from 1636 to 1648 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 407). He frequently appeared as an arbiter in disputes. On 28 July 1632, a dispute had arisen between Jacob (Jacquesz.) Rombouts of (R 19454), with a procuration from Regina de Wilde, the mother of Abraham de Vogelaer, the natural son of Melchior de Vogelaer, on one hand, and Abraham Anthonisz. (of R 20033), named by the court as administrator of the goods left by Casper de Vogelaer, on the other. Margerite de Vogelaer, the only daughter of Casper de Vogelaer, was one of the heirs. Hercules Rogh and Mr. Pieter Cloeck were the arbiters (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom).

BuyerAbraham Pelt
Buyer FamilyPelt, Abraham (II)
Buyer NotesAbraham Pelt II, born in Antwerp on 1 November 1573, was the son of Abraham Pelt I (1533-1602) and of Catharina de Bock. He was a dealer in ironwares in the house de Brandtijser in 1625 (WK 5073/1192, 28 August). He became a citizen of Amsterdam on 16 February 1604 and died in Amsterdam on 2 July 1659 (for bio-data on Abraham Pelt II and his closest relatives, see M. Simon Thomas, Onze IJslandsvaarders in de 17de en 18de eeuw, Amsterdam, 1935, Appendix G). On 20 November 1604, Abraham Pelt (II), from Antwerp, 31 years old, living in the St. Annestraet, assisted by his mother Cathryn de Bock, and his brother Hans Pelt(I), was betrothed to Eva Vogels, from Antwerp, 27, living on the Rockin, assisted by her mother Catharina Pottens (DTB 665/382). Eva Vogel was the daughter of Aert de Vogel (Poelwijk, In dienste vant suyckerbacken, p. 271). Hans Pelt (I) (1567-1628) was married to Susanna Vogel, the sister of Eva Vogel (Thomas, loc, cit.) The children of Abraham Pelt II and Eva Vogel were: Catharina Pelt, born in Amsterdam on 23 January 1606 who married Coenrad Giessenbier (see below); Anna Pelt, born in Amsterdam on 12 April 1608, who married Herman Capellen on 12 June 1640; Maria Pelt, born in Amsterdam on 10 June 1610, who married Johannes Severeyns (Meurck), born in Aarhus, on 1 March 1644; Susanna Pelt, born in Amsterdam on 15 October 1612, who married Johannes Westingh (retail silk merchant) on 3 October 1645); and Paulus Pelt, born in Amsterdam on 19 May 1619, who married Lucretia van Gansepoel (born on 16 October 1618) in Amsterdam on 19 July 1642 (Thomas, loc.cit.) Paulus Pelt was an important merchant in freighting ships for the North sea trade (Thomas, op.cit. pp. 69, 71, and passim). On 19 December 1634, Coenraed Gyssenbier, assisted by Niclaes Ruts (portrayed by Rembrandt) and [... Hoche(?)] Pied, his good acquaintances, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Catarina Pelt, assisted by her father Abraham Pelt (II) and her uncle Philips Pelt (I) (of R 28903). On 3 November 1632, Abraham Pelt (II), 60, and Jacques de la Meyne, 46 (of R 23757), merchants, together with Casper Boon, bookkeeper, made a deposition (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). Abraham Pelt III, born in Amsterdam in October 1597, was the son of Hans Pelt (the brother of Abraham Pelt II). He was known as Abraham Pelt Hansz. Abraham Hansz. Pelt's sugar refinery, named 't Swarte Paertshooft, was located on the Keizersgracht (E. van Houten, Het grachtenboek, 1962, p. 50). Abraham (Hansz.) Pelt (II), sugar refiner, 28, assisted by his father Hans Pelt (I). living in the Nes, was betrothed on 25 October 1625, to Helena van Gansepoel, 24, from Aachen, assisted by her mother Marya Deringnaeme (de Renialme), living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 670/98). Helena was the daughter of Paulus van Gansepoel I and of Maria de Renialme. Maria de Renialme, in turn, was the daughter of Lancelot de Renialme and of Maria de Cordes. On 22 September 1635, the honorable Maria de Renialme, widow of Paulus van Gansepoel, and her son David van Gansepoel made a declaration concerning the inheritance left by Paulus van Gansepoel, who sold colored silk cloths (NA 695A, Not. J. Warnaerts). No direct family connection of Maria de Renialme with the art dealer Johannes de Renialme has so far been traced. Abraham Hansz. Pelt remarried with Anna Brentes from Middelburgh, 36 (betrothal act dated 24 September 1649. He was then living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 680/150). On 6 December 1637, Maria de Renialme, widow of Paulus van Gansepoel, made a declaration about the division of an estate (of her late husband's?). She testified that her insurance claims had been paid in full by Roeloff Codde (of R 7591) (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). On 25 April 1640, Abraham Hansz. Pelt and his unnamed wife had their son Paulus baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of David van Gansepoel and Anna Pelt (DTB 139/349). On 26 April 1638, David van Gansepoel, 29, and Jacob Lanslot van Gansepoel, 24, both carrying on the affairs of the late Paulus van Gansepoel, made a deposition at the request of Gillis Schillemans, merchant in Middelburgh, concerning certain ships freighted by the widow of Paulus van Gansepoel. In an act of 3 March 1636, Abraham Pelt Jansz. and Willem van Dalen were cited as deacons of the Lutheran Church (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 28 August 1625, the trustees of the estate of Andries Graeuw (of INVNO 682) paid 20 f. to Abraham Pelt II voor de Brandtijser besteet (WK 5073/1192). Abraham Pelt II paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, living in the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 167 vo., p. 39). In 1658, Hendrick Uylenburgh and Guiliam de Ville appraised some paintings of Abraham Pelt. Since Abraham Pelt II died on 12 December 1646, these paintings are likely to to have belonged to Abraham Hansz. Pelt (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1690, no notary's name supplied). Hans Pels (alias Pelt) is not identical with Hans Pelt I, born on 8 May 1567, who died in Amsterdam in December 1628 (Thomas, ibid.) According to a deposition of 12 January 1637, Hans Pelt II was 36 years old at this time, thus born in 1600/1601 (NA 479B, Not. Palm Mathijs). He signed the insolvent inventory of Johannes Verspreet, sugar refiner (of INVNO 497) on 13 December 1656. He was noted as a sugar refiner in 1667 and 1668 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), pp. 760 and 773). He was a member of the Pels family, which, as far as is known, was not related to the Pelt family.

Buyer FamilyCornelis (de soon in de Fonteyn)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may have been the son of the anonymous owner of the goods sold at the request of Pieter Loduwycxsz. Several houses called de Fonteijn are known, including one on the Damsluijs, not far from the Calverstraet, the address given above. Jan Jansz., the glassmaker and engraver of INVNO 553, lived in de Fonteijn and became known as Jan Jansz. Fonteijn (see R 31132). He had a son named Cornelis (see INTRO to INVNO 553), but it is unlikely that the glassmaker could have had a son old enough to buy a painting by the date of this sale.

BuyerHans Conincksloo (II)
Buyer FamilyConinksloo (Coninxloo), Hans van (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is presumed to be Hans Conincksloo II, born in Antwerp in 1565. He moved to Emden with his father Hans van Conincksloo I in 1571, where he married Magdalena Ruts from Antwerp in 1588. She was the sister of Joost Ruts (or Rudts) who witnessed the baptism of Maijke, the daughter of Abraham van Offenberch and Susanna van Steenwinckel of INVNO 171 on 24 February 1619 (R 91 of Montias1). (Magdalena Ruts, the wife of Hans Conincxloo II, must not be confused with the much younger woman of the same name who was the daughter of Nicolaes Ruts and Annetge van Apperloo of INVNO 468. The two Magdalenas were probably aunt and niece). Joost Ruts died before 1631 when his widow, living on the voorst Verwerstraet, paid a tax of 50 f. (Kohier fol. 222v, p. 51). In 1598 Hans van Coninxloo II moved to Amsterdam. On 20 August 1599, Hans van Coninxloo, widower of Magdalena Ruts, living a Paschalis (since Easter) next to the Waterpoortgen in the Nieue Stadt, assisted by Mr. Gillis van Coninksloo, his uncle, was betrothed to Clara Wouters, from Antwerp, 38 years old. On August 9, the pre-nuptial contract was signed in the presence of the bridegroom's uncle Gillis van Coniinxloo, of his cousin Jan van Baerle (de oude) (of R 20427) and of his brother-in-law Joost Ruts, and of the bride's brother Francoys Wouters. Hans van Conincxloo II was said to owe 225 f. to his ten-year-old son Hans (cited by Briels in Vlaamse schilders, 1997, 317). Francois Wouters, merchant born in Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1591, was the swager of Joos van Lathouwer and the neef of Balthasar Schuylenburg (the father of Ferdinandus Schuijlenburg of R 25764 and of Frederick Schuijlenburg of R 34736) (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 318). He married Yken Adams, the sister-in-law of Steven Pinel of INVNO 715 (Briels, ibid. p. 318). When he lived in Amsterdam in the early 1600s, Hans van Conincxloo's occupation as art dealer was said to require his dagelicxe negotien ende affairen. In 1608, he returned to Emden, where he died shortly after 20 June 1620 (Briels, ibid.) However, he must have divided his time between Emden and Amsterdam. On 24 July 1611, he and his wife Klaerken Wouters had their daughter Klaerken baptized in the O.K. of Amsterdam in the presence of Hans van Koningsloo de jonge (III) (of R 21404), Klaerken Jans (possibly his sister), and Jan Taemsen (DTB 4/356).

BuyerSymon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven, Huych Jansz. voors.
Buyer FamilySchoonhoven, Symon Jacobsz.
Buyer NotesOn 16 April 1635, Aeltje Langhe, widow of Symon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven. assisted by Hugh Jansz. van Crayesteyn (of R 29209), as her guardian and relative (vriend), on one side, and Vincent Hendricksz. Molshouck (of R 23406), living in Delft, on the other, declared that they had come to an agreement with Margriete van Molshouck, concerning the household goods and Imboel or the moneys proceeding from their sale, that Margriet Molshouck had transferred in full property to Symon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven. In counterpart, Vincent Molshouck will give 320 f. to Aeltje Willems. Margriete van Molshoeck, widow of Pieter Hendricksz. Molshoeck acknowledged that Vincent Hendricksz. Molshoeck had allowed her to keep various household goods (listed) (NA 596, fol. 437, Not. Lamberti). Symon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven was one of the Heeren XVII of Amsterdam which administered the V.O.C. He signed the resolution of 21 July 1614 concerning the fleet of Joris van Spilbergen (C. Romburgh et al. Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten- Vereeniging, 1957, p. 651.) He paid a tax of 350 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on or near the Heregracht (Kohier, fol. 66 vo., p.16). He was probably the brother of Dirck Jacobsz. Schoonhoven, who was charged with the packing, loading, and so forth of the gift made by the States General to the Sultan in Constantinople in 1612 (Oud Holland, 1(1883), p. 174). The broker Huych Jansz. (van Crayesteyn) (of 29299), cited above, was probably the buyer's borg or surety.

BuyerJan Claesz., Jan Oom Jansz.
Buyer FamilyClaesz., Jan (Oom?)
Buyer NotesIn two depositions, dated 30 November 1630 and 3 April 1630, the ages of Jan Oom Claesz. de oude and Jan Oom Claesz. de jonge were given. They consistently indicate that the older man was born in 1576 and the younger one in 1590 or 1591 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P., 78(1933), p. 740 and NA 863, Not. Van Zwieten, of the above date). Thus the older man was only 14 or 15 years older, than the younger, who may have been his nephew. Both were soap boilers. Jan Oom Jansz., who may have been the younger man's uncle, was probably his borg (On both Jan Oom Claesz. de oude and de jonge, see the numerous documents in Van Dillen, loc.cit.) The more likely buyer would seem to be Jan Oom Claesz. de oude, since Jan Oom Claesz. de jonge was only 19 years old at the time of the present sale, and he was not called de jonge by the clerk recording the purchase. Jan Oom Claesz. de oude, married to Aeltge Ellerts (or Elberts), lived on the Keisersgracht in a house built in 1618 for the baker Elbert Goykens (I) (probably her father). Elbert Goykens I's son, named Goyken Elbertsz. (Snoeck) was an outstanding merchant. His son Dr. Elbert Goykens (II) married Agatha Munter, who left an estate evaluated at f. 160,000. (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp.626-7). On 19 April 1618, the honorable Jacob Symonsz. Fries, on one side, and the honorable Jan Oom Claesz., on the other, soap boilers, contracted as follows. Jacob Fries would take over the last two years lease, starting May 1618, of de Vergulde Seepton on the Warmoesstraet, which he, Fries, had leased from Gerrit Fongersz., cloth merchant, and Jan Oom Claesz. would undertake to pay the rent of 240 f. a year and to meet all the conditions, including the tax payments, that Fries had agreed on with Fongersz. (Van Dillen, op.cit., p. 287). It later turned out that the soap boiling works were in poor condition, that they were in danger of catching fire and needed repairs which Jan Oom Claesz. demanded be carried out by Fries and Fongertsz. (ibid. p.291). Jan Oom Claesz. de oude died before 13 August 1636, when his widow Aeltge Elberts named Evert van Lintelo III to appear before the Commissary for Marriage Affairs (NA 889, film 595). On 11 November 1637, Jan Oom Claesz. (II, de jonge) insinuated Aeltgen Ellerts, widow of Jan Oom Claesz. (NA 1420, fol.199vo.) On 22 December 1627, Jan Oom Claesz. de jonge, widower of Nelletje Jans Schuit, living opt Water, was betrothed to Anna van der Wel, widow of Floris Klouck (or Clouck), living in Utrecht (DTB 764/38). On 26 August 1637, Jan Oom Claesz., Philips Laurens (of R 20239), and Aeltge Elberts, widow of Jan Oom Claesz. de oude, drew up a procuration (NA 866, Not. van Zwieten). Jan Oom Claesz. de jonge must have died before 9 July 1650, when his widow Anna van der Wel had his death inventory drawn up (INVNO 526, R 432 of Montias1). For an incident involving Ellert Jansz., the son of Jan Oom Claesz. (de oude), see the NOTES to R 36384. The daughter of Jan Oom Claesz. I, named Trijntje Ooms, married Evert Lintelo II, the father of Evert Lintelo III cited above. For his inventory, see INVNO 342.

Buyer NotesThe buyer was perhaps the merchant who freighted three ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch Historisch Jaarboek 17 (1931), p. 268). In 1606, Willem Barentsz., living op de Appelbooom op de Dam, bought lots for 16 f. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 131/12 F 949). It may be the same Willem Barentsz., who, together with his children, was taxed 200 f. in 1631 (living on the Heeregracht) (Kohier, fol. 182, p. 42). In 1625, a buyer named Willem Barentsz. was living in the Angnietestraet (R 32309).

Buyer FamilyWery (Werry, Very), Daniel (de)
Buyer NotesDaniel Wery was born in Antwerp (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 318). In 1606, Daniel Wery living in the Calverstraet in de Harpte, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 14 st. (GAA 52/88 F 412). On 13 July 1611, Pieter Elecaert and Daniel Wery were named by the masters of the Orphan Chamber as guardians over the children of Thomas Smit (WK 5073/513, fol. 130vo or 140vo., due to error in numbering). Pieter Ellekaert was a witness to the baptism of one of the children of the painter Daniel van den Bremden (R 31208). On 1 May 1633, he signed as a witness to the inventory of Judit Darmel, the wife of Guilliam (Willem) van Neuremburgh (probably II) (see the NOTES to R 33370). In the inventory of Willem Seulijns II and Susanna van Couwenbergh, Daniel de Wery was said to be owed 97 f. 7 st. 8 pen. from the estate (NA 563, fol. 69, 7-12 November 1629). In the inventory of the late Jacques Wery, dated 13 August 1654, there were two portraits of Daniel Wery and one of Daniel Wery and his wife, as well as portraits of Jacques and Susanna Wery (NA 1970A, Not. P. Doornik).

BuyerReynier van Seller
Buyer FamilySeller (Zeller), Reynier van
Buyer NotesOn 12 October 1596, Reynier van Zeller, from Nijmegen, having lived in the Warmoesstraet for 15 years, no living parents, was betrothed to Aeltgen Geenen, 20, assisted by her father Geen Symonsz. and her mother Ael Buysken (DTB 664/215). In 1606 when he bought lots for 5 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery, he was still living in the Warmoesstraet, in het Cromhout of Trompet (GAA, 87/11 F 651). His maid Anneken Stevens also bought one lot for 6 st. (GAA, 87/37 F 654). He was an important wine dealer and perhaps also a merchant engaged in overseas trade. On 22 April 1599, he was informed that a letter of exchange that he had issued for 50 Fl. pounds, payable in Dantzig, had been protested (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 178(1981), pp. 138-9). On 13 January 1618 and 20 October 1620, he made depositions, together with other wine dealers, concerning common issues in the trade (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 269 and pp. 507-8). On 29 April 1627, Aeltgen Gheen, widow of Reynier van Zeller, and Cornelis Dircx Cool (cited in the NOTES to R 32237), as guardian and curator of Maritgen, 13, were cited in an appearance before the WK, concerning assets inherited by the child. In 1631, the widow, living on or near the Papenbruchsteech, which was probably still her old address on the Warmoesstraet, was taxed 180 f. The widow was listed next to Frederick Leecker, another wine dealer (100 f.) of R 20488. (Kohier, fol. 141 vo., p. 33).
