Buyersolvit (crossed out: Jan Otten by Jaques Verbeeck)
Buyer FamilyOtten (Otton), Jan
Buyer NotesJan Otten, livng in de Twee Viscippers across the Giethuis, bought one lot for 6 stuivers in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 81/10 F 624). He may be identical with Jan Otten Munter of R 31920. On 17 May 1634, Jan Otton, sworn broker, declared at the request of Frederick de Buckere, merchant, that he had gone with De Buckere to the house of srs. Taelman and Martin, merchants, to buy certain woolens, which he had formerly seen in their cellar. After some negotiation over prices, De Buckere had come to an agreement with Taelman and Martin (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 53). Frederick de Buckere and his putative brother Pieter de Buckere bought the warehouse de Hoop from Willem Wilemsen van Beijnstorp (cited in the NOTES to R 7610), on the West side of the Koninsgracht, on 14 January 1614 (ibid. p. 357). Jacques Verbeeck (of R 31364), with whom Jan Otten seems to have been living at this time (perhaps as an employee), was a rich merchant of Antwerp origin (domiciled in the Molenstraet in 1605 and in the O.Z. Voorburchwal at the time of his death c. 1612.) He invested 6000 f. in V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 229). For Jacques Verbeeck's death inventory, see INVNO 928 of 1613 and R 450 of Montias1.

Buyer NotesThe painter Reynier Ewoutsz. was the brother of Claes Ewoutsz. of R 29021. On 1 October 1605, Reinier Eeuwoutsz., 24 years old, living in the Nes, accompanied by his brother Claes Eeuwoutsz., was betrothed to Annetje Andriesdochter, 20, accompanied by her father Andries de Grau (of INVNO 682 and INVNO 6820 of 1617) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1868). In 1611, he caused a deposition to be made about his sick child, where he is called Reynier Ewouts Bout (ibid. p. 1869). He drew up his testament leaving his goods to his children Teuntien and Andries. In November 1620. he was a witess to the will of Henricus Velthusius, lector (ibid.) In 1615, together with his brother, he was a member of the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) (Oud Holland 22 (1904), p. 40). On 11 December 1620 he issued an obligation for 200 f. which was acquired by Pieter Tonisz., horticulturist (hovenier) (WK 5073/589). Annetien Andrijs, wife of Reynier Eewoutsen, was buried on 15 September 1629. He was buried on 14 October 1632 (DTB 1045/17 and 1045/47 resp.) The sister of Claes and Reynier Eewoutsz., named Magdalena, married Palick van den Hardt (1568-1617) in 1595. BuyerAbraham Dirxsz. [crossed out: bij de Baillu] op de Seedyck in de Vergulde Drack
Buyer FamilyDirxsz., Abraham (Bierens)
Buyer NotesThe house called De Vergulde Draeck was located on the Singel between the Gasthuisbrug and the Nieuwe Raambrug. It was inhabited from 1614 to 1618 by Ysbrand Ben Albertsz. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 217). Abraham Dirxsz. is likely to be identical with Abraham Dirxsz. (Bierens), married to Jacomijntje Jacobs, whose daughter Hester Abrahams was betrothed to Jacob Hamer of R 33640 on 7 July 1631. Both lived on the Heeregracht, ex-Singel (DTB 672/47). Abraham Dircksz. Bierens, the father of Hester Abrahams, was a Mennonite of the Flemish sect (J.Z. Karsgieter in Maandblad Amstelodamum 48(1961), p. I. van Eeghen in Maandblad Amstelodamum 60(1973), p. 30). On 27 May 1640 the honorable Abraham Dircx, 54, and Joost Hendricksz. 48, both teachers of the Mennonite community, testified (without oath as befits Mennonites) at the request of Frederick Lutgers that he, Lutgers, was a member of the community (NA 997, film 1228, Notary Gerrit Coren).

BuyerClaes Ewoutsz. [crossed out: solvit, Pieter Jansz. van Loo pachter in de 3 Vyseltgens]
Buyer NotesOn the buyer, see R 29021. The underbidder (?) Pieter Jansz. van Loo(n), who may also have been bidding for this lot, was a collector (farmer) of the excise tax on beers in 1614 and on wines in 1630 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 48 and 709.) His estate was sold at auction on 26 May 1635 (INVNO 920). The late Pieter Jansz. van Loo, lyndrayer, whose mother is Yge Gerrits [...], left 968 f. to his children, according to an Orphan Chamber act of 18 October 1635 (WK 5073/789). Note that the sale made at the request of the painter Valerius van der Hoeve on 23 May 1609 was held op den Dam in de Drie Viseltges. The arguments advanced in the TEXT of R 788 of Montias1 indicated that he was not identical with Pieter van Loo (or van der Loo), diamond cutter and jeweler, the widow of whom had her goods inventorized on 11 November 1641 (NA 714, fol. 482),

BuyerHendrick Verstegen
Buyer FamilyVerstegen (Versteech), Hendrick
Buyer NotesOn 1 October 1622, Heyndrick Jacobsen Versteeck (signs Verstech), 27 years old, clockmaker (orlogemacker), assisted by his father Jacob Stevensz. Versteech, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Anna Thomas Rasdr., 21, assisted by her mother Bayken Scheepers, living on the Roosegracht (DTB 427/266). Jacob Stevensz. Versteech, living in the Gansoort, paid a tax of 2 f. in 1585. However, by 1606, he was living in the Nes (as was his son in 1622) in de Wijser when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 117/3 F 864). The father invested 600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602. On 8 December 1617, he formed a company with Aert Duyfkens (on whom see R 25035) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 138, and Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 261). In November 1636, Jacob Maijer, cake baker, turned over 470 f. to the heirs of Jacob Stevensz. Verstegen, as rents due on a house on Rockin at the corner of St. Pieterspoort (NA 772, Not. Verhey). Hendrick Verstegen was the brother of Steven Verstegen of R 25236. On 20 April 1640, Anna Marchys (signs Merssijs), widow of Jacob Verstegen, assisted by Frederick Schuylenburch, director of the W.I.C. (of R 34734), made arrangements to collect an obligation due to her in Vrieslandt (NA 422, Not. J. Jacobs, film 6438). Anna Ras (alias Raes and Raet) was the sister of Catryna Raes, the wife of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt. On 31 August 1623, Hendrick Versteegh and Anneken Raet had their daughter Annetjen baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jacob Stevensz. (his father) and Baijke Schepers, the wife of Tomas Raes (for details, see Obreen, Archief, vol. 6, pp. 48-9). Hendrick Versteech was a witness at the baptism of Catryna, the daughter of Adriaen van Nieulandt and Cateryne Raes, on 18 September 1625. The other witnesses were the painters Fransoys Kaersgieter and Paulus Hillegaert and Anna Hoymans (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 235). On 22 December 1630. Hendrick Verstegen and Anna Tomas had their daughter Baijken baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Hendrick's brother Steven Verstegen (DTB 41/113). On 2 October 1639, Henrick Verstegen and Anna Tomas had their daughter Katarine baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Adriaen van Nieulant (DTB 42/161). Katarine or Catharina Versteegen, 23, assisted by her mother Anneken Raes, living in the Huydenstraet, was betrothed to the painter Hendrick Leemans, 25, assisted by his mother Susanna Hendricks, living in the Petaniedwarstraet, on 1 June 1663 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.158). On 15 December 1646, Hendrick Verstegen and Dirck Claesz. Helt signed a notice in the Desolate Boedelskamer of the insolvency of Johannes Verstegen (DBK 5072/872). Hendrick Versteegh was only about 14 years old when he bought the present lot.

BuyerGerrit Dirxsz. Martelaer
Buyer FamilyMartelaer, Gerrit Dirxsz.
Buyer NotesOn 30 September 1600, Gerard Dircksz. Martelaer, 29 years old, living in the Nieustadt outside the Jan Roodenpoort on the Achterburchwal, assisted by his mother Trijntjen Bastiaens and his brother Pieter Dircksz. Martelaer, was betrothed to Lubbrich Jacobs, widow of Jan Thijmansz. Koster, living near the Heypoort in the Nieustadt (DTB 409/249). Trijntjen Bastiaens, widow of Dirck Aertsen Martelaer, who was probably the father of Gerrit Dircksz., was mentioned in connection with the lottery of 1606 (GAA, 1 F 726). By 1606, Pieter Dircksz. Martelaer had also died (his widow bought lots for 3 f. in the Haarlem lottery) (GAA, 97/2 F 726). Gerrit Dircksz. Martelaer invested 600 f. in the initial offering of V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 238). He was also the brother of Matheus Dircksz. Martelaer who married Lijsbeth Jans Smit, born in 1571, in June 1588 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 127) and also of Claes Dircksen Martelaer who invested 1,600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 225).

BuyerHans Auxbrebis in de Blauwe Boucketten in den Nes
Buyer FamilyAuxbrebis (Brebis), Hans I (aux)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Hans Auxbrebis I, the uncle of Hans Auxbrebis II of R 25592. The latter was 23 years old at the time of this sale. If Hans Auxbrebis I was still alive at this time, his nephew would normally have been called de jonge. Hans Aux Brebis II was betrothed to Catrijn Jans Garijn in April 1596 (DTB 407/184). She was the daughter of Jan Garijn, a merchant who fled Antwerp in 1585 and was first noted in Amsterdam in that year (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 301 and De Navorscher 53(1903), pp. 466-7). It is not clear whether it was the uncle or the nephew who bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 or which of the two was a member of the Chamber of Rhetoricians 't Witte Lavender in 1613 (see the NOTES to R 25592).

BuyerHans Wyderhuysen in de Smack in de Warmoesstraet
Buyer FamilyWyderhuysen (Widershusen, Wijdershuizen), Hans (I?)
Buyer NotesOn 13 April 1590, Hans Widershusen, born in Hildeshelm, about 30 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by Jan Ysbrants Blau Hulck, was married to Fensgen Hermansdr., 23, living as above (DTB 663/65). On 27 January 1602, Hans Wijdershuizen assisted Hendrick Jochemsz. Beeckman (of R 28447) in his pre-nuptial contract with Trijntgen Gotemakers (cited in the NOTES to R 28447). Many years later (the date is unknown, but probably in the mid-1620s), Fensgen Hermans still owned De Smack in the Warmoesstraet when the inventory of goods belonging to Jan Vos (probably Jan Vos II of R 29666, see also the NOTES to R 20647) was taken (INVNO 1211). In 1602, Hans Wyderhuysen was said to be a merchant (NA 4, fol. 161). On 4 February 1595, he complained in a notarial insinuation that Anthonij Cornelissen van Ackersdijck had refused to pay a letter of exchange in his (Wijdershuysen's) favor (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel 178(1981), p. 177). He invested 1,800 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 242). On 30 May 1603, the painter Hans Vredeman de Vries, Hans Wijdershuysen, and Valerius van Gistele (of R 27537), executors of the testament of Anneken Gottens, widow of the painter Mr. Hans Bol, petitioned the Higher Court in Den Haag for a commitimus of the inventory because they did not know the state of its contents (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 301). The family of Hans Bol was Lutheran, as was that of Hans Widerhuysen and of Valerius van Gistel. Hans Widershuysen de jonge bought 11 lots for 3 f. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606. He was then living in de Smack in the Warmoesstraet, precisely the address he gave at the time of this sale (GAA, 148/12 F 1061). On 1 October 1611, Louis Cleuterinck (a merchant originally from Gent) protested the failure to pay a letter of exchange drawn against Sr. Hendrick Alverman in the house of Hans Wydershuysen, who was apparently Alverman's swager, as also against Hendrick Brouwer who was also lodged there. Hendrick Brouwer, who was a dealer in spices, may or may not be identical with Hendrick, the son of Jan Brouwer (see below); he married Agnieta Pelser and later Clartie van Dorp (Nederlandsche Leeuw 73(1956), col. 342). On 1 January 1630, Jannetje Brouwer, wife of Meynert Wouters, and Clartie van Dorp, wife of Hendrick Brouwer, brought to the Orphan Chamber various assets from the estate of Jan Brouwer, their father and father-in-law resp. One of the heirs was Machteltjien Brouwers, married to Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos (of R 31021) (WK 5073/789). Louis or Lowys Cleuterinck (or Clueterijng) was a packer (warehouse man) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 602). Hans Wyderhuysen was a witness to baptisms in the Lutheran Church of children of Godart Kerckering (R 21249) and Jaspar Wickevoort (R 21502)). He seems to have died between 19 March, when he was noted, and 30 December 1615, when his widow was mentioned (J. G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 31/2). Hendrick Brouwer, cited above, married to Clartie van Dorp, was the first of this name. Hendrick Brouwer II was said to be 19 years old in a deposition dated 4 March 1636, together with Dr. Anthony Schellingwou, 31, made a the request of the children of Anna Jacobs over an obligation (NA 583, film 574, Notary Evert Rooleeuw). Between the preceding lot and this one, the following lot was crossed out: [Pieter Jansz. Loo, 1 stuck uts. no. 50 Loeff Henricksz. Stopper].
