Buyer FamilyBuys, Pieter
Buyer NotesPieter Buys, born in Maastricht, became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1596. He was a merchant and gun powder maker (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 296). Living in the Schilpadt, he bought lots for 6 st. in the Haarlem on 27 September 1606 (GAA, 1/54 F 7). At the sale held at the request of Grietge Pieters, which consisted mainly of books, on 17 April 1610, Pieter Buys, one of the buyers, was said to be tot Leyden int Retorika naest de Lambert op het Kerckhoff. On 9 November 1604, Pieter Buys and Clara van Dissen, had their daughter Clara baptized in the presence of Jacob Buys (DTB 39/51). He died after 1612 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base).

BuyerWillem Beck inde Convoy
Buyer FamilyBeck, Willem (van)
Buyer NotesOn 12 October 1609, Willem Becq (signs Beeck), from Dordrecht, 27, assisted by his parents Caspar Becq and Marta Egelkechts, was betrothed to Anna Martens Houffijsers, 16, assisted by her parents Marten Jansz. Houffijser (father of Pieter Martensz. Hoeffijser of INVNO 433) and Trijntje Tijmens (DTB 414/68). The address of Anna Martens in de Convoy confirms the identification (see also Elias, Vroedschap, p. 357). Anna Martens was the sister of Pieter Martensz. Hoeffijser of R 29669. On 5 June 1633, Willem van Beck and Anneken van Beck had their daughter Anneken baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Heindrick Opdekemp, Feltje Pieters, and Giertjen Beijers (DTB 6/369).

BuyerJan de Nimey
Buyer FamilyNimey (Nimaij), Jan de
Buyer NotesOn 22 November 1597, Jean de Nimey, from Antwerp, 24 years old, living by de Brugge, assisted by his parents Henri de Nimey and Elisabeth de Simery, was betrothed to Marie Rousseau, 23, also from Antwerp, assisted by her parents Jean Rousteau (?) and Ariaentje Paris (?) (DTB 408/255). The buyer may be identical with Jan de Nimain, coopman, who contracted with Hans Mus, silk dyer (perhaps of R 20539), to found a company for silk dyeing on 29 November 1607 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 656). Jean de Mimey was the brother of Pieter de Mimey of R 29298. On 21 April 1617, the bankrupt inventory of Jan de Nimaij was drawn up for the benefit of his creditors, pursuant to an order of the Higher Court of 4 April 1617. The total value of the goods in the inventory amounted to 416 f. 17 st. including some clothing (NA 380).

BuyerWillem Warmont tot Leyden
Buyer FamilyWarmont, Willem (tot Leyden)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is almost surely Willem Jacobsz. van Warmont, son of Jacob van Warmont and of Ytgen Bouwer, the sister of Hans Bouwer I (R 443 of Montias1)and of Maritge Bouwer (of R 300 of Montias1). Jacob van Warmont was born in 1556 and died in 1620. Willem Jacobsz. was born in 1583, became Burgomaster of Haarlem in 1645, and owned a brewery. He married Trijntge Jacobs van Rijn in Amsterdam on 11 November 1607. Trijntge Jacobs was probably the sister of Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn of R 27935 and of Willem Jacobsz. (van Rijn) of R 31254. Willem Jacobsz. van Warmont died on 8 April 1650 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 413). In 1606, Willem Jacobsz. Wermondt, living in the Breestraet, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. and for 5 f. 8 st. (GAA, 45/19 F 362 and 45/33 F 364). On 8 August 1635, Sievert Sem de jonge, assisted by his parents, Willem Warmont, brewer in Haarlem, and Trijntge Jacobs van Rijn, declared that his uncle Sievert Pietersz. Sem (of INVNO 405 of 5 March 1635), had left some some lands in his testament to which he apparently had a claim (WK 5073/890, fol. 230). On 2 March 1637, the honorable Willem Warmont, brewer and commissioner for small affairs, in Amsterdam declared that he had read the codicil of the testament of Arent Brouwer Hillebrantsz. in which he was named as co-guardian over the children of Melchior Brouwer (of R 27856). Due to his being committed to other affairs, he declined the responsibility, naming Hugo van Groenewegen in his place (NA 598, fol. 127, Not. Lamberti). If the identification with the brewer Warmont is correct, it would appear that the buyer was living in Leiden at the time of this sale.

Buyer FamilyRaet, Carel (de)
Buyer NotesOn 31 December 1615, Carel de Raet and Geertruijt van Dacken had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Thomas Heinricksz. van Daken, Dierck van Hetteren, and Elisabeth de Leeuw (DTB 5/170). Thomas van Dacken was the father of Geertruijt van Dacken. On 6 July 1619, Karel Raet and Geertjen van Daecken had their son Karel baptized in the same church in the presence of Nijkolaes Ducker, Nijkolaes Meynertsz. Hagen, and Marije Kecks (DTB 5/109). On 22 July 1623, Geertruijt van Daeken, widow of Carel Raes (sic), was betrothed to Jan Jansz. van Noorden, widower of Dirckje Jans (DTB 428/128). On 11 February 1633, Tomas Hendricksz. van Daken, as the grandfather of Hans, 21, the son left by Carel de Raet, broker, declared that he had a sum of 450 f. for the boy (WK 5073/789).

BuyerFrancois de Coster in de Barndesteech
Buyer FamilyCoster, Francois de (I ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Francois de Coster I rather than his son Francois de Coster II who was 25 years old at the time of the sale. Francoijs Costers I, from Antwerp, carpenter, remarried in 1601. He was the brother of Guilliam Costers, the grandfather of Anna and Pieter Nijs. Another brother was the rich Pieter Costers, who died without direct heirs (I. van Eeghen, Het geslacht Nijs ... Jaarboek Amstelodamum 60(1968), p. 98). Thus Francoijs de Coster or Costers and his son of the same name were related to Anthony Nijs of R 7616. In 1606, Francoijs de Coster, living in the Barndesteeg (as above) in the Stormhoet, bought 7 lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. The lines that he contributed mentioned that he was young in years, thus that it was he, rather than his father of the same name, who had bought these lots (he was 21 years old). On 13 December 1624, Francois de Coster II, from Antwerp, 39, assisted by his father Francois de Coster I, was betrothed to Ida van Duuren, 25, assisted by her parents Evert van Duur and Helena Oliviers (DTB 670/13). Francois de Coster II seems to have been a silk cloth dealer. In 1635, he owed f 97: 11: 8 to a silk merchant for tranzy(de) (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 14(1916), p. 174). It was perhaps he (rather than his son Francois de Coster III) who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 21 January 1641 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 305). Evert van Duur or Dueren and his wife Helena Oliviers were reprimanded by the Kerkeraad of their church for allowing the registration of the nuptials to take place at the Town Hall. Evert claimed that it had been against his will (Herman Roodenburg, Onder censuur, 1990, p. 179). Francois de Coster (probably I) paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631, at which time he lived in the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 208 vo., p. 48). Francois de Coster I was apparently still alive on 9 February 1636 when Francois de Coster de jonge and Ida van Duren passed their testament (NA 414A, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) The son of Francois de Coster II, Francois de Coster III, married Anna van Basserode, the daughter of Emanuel van Basserode of INVNO 458 on 17 November 1648. It was probably this Francois de Coster III, attorney, to whom Rembrandt gave a procuration to collect money due to him on 28 March 1653 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 302). He died on 19 September 1669. Anna van Basserode remarried with Antonie de Beaumont on 24 May 1661 (De Navorscher 28(1878), p. 240.) It is doubtful but possible that the buyer is identical with Francois Hendricxsz. Coster, merchant in Amsterdam, who was insinuated by Hans Baert, merchant in Haarlem, on 25 June 1637 because he (Coster) had bought some bulbs from Baert but had failed to take delivery and pay for the bulbs (Posthumus, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 13(1927), p. 71).

BuyerAbraham Vinck in de 6 huysen
Buyer FamilyVinck, Abraham
Buyer NotesThe painter Abraham Vinck was born in Hamburg about 1580, the son of the merchant Willem Vinck. He spent the years 1600-1606 in Naples where he married Vittoria Obbekens (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 399). He was active in Amsterdam from 1610 to 1619 His daughter Margarita was born in Naples. His son Abraham was baptized on 30 May 1610 in the O.K., shortly after the present sale. Anna de Morimont, the wife of Charles Coorne of R 27489, was a witness to the baptism. In 1619, sick in his body, he passed his testament naming his children Margriete, Catharina, and Abraham as his heirs (Oud Holland, 3(1885), pp. 184-5.) He was buried on 8 July 1621, coming from the Cingel. For the auction that took place after the death of Abraham Vinck (de oude) in 1621, see INVNO 560. On 28 March 1622, Coert Cooper (of INVNO 1216) was named guardian over his children by the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/513, fol. 2). On 6 September 1645, the painter Thijs Pietersz. Croeck, 46, declared at the request of Maycke Vincks and of Janneke van Mutzele, wife of Pieter Vinck, that he had lived for five years with Abraham Vinck. The wife of Jacob Leon (of R 20166) declared that she had finished some of Vinck's paintings. Vinck was involved in the copying of paintings and in art dealing (Maandblad Amstelodamum 67(1980), p. 35).

BuyerPieter Romburgh naest Jupiter
Buyer FamilyRomburgh, Pieter (Pierre) (II)
Buyer NotesOn 5 May 1600, Pieter Romborch de jonge, from Wesel, 26, living in Wesel, assisted by his father Pieter Romborch (I), was betrothed to Hester Mathieu, from Wesel, 20, assisted by her swager Jacques Merchier (of R 20399) and her sister Maria Mathieu (DTB 409/167). Jacques Merchier was a prominent goldsmith. On 17 October 1625, he and Marten Verbrugge (of R 23554) brought 10,486 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of the children of the sugar refiner David de Prince (WK 5073/549). On 20 September 1632, Mathijs van Ceulen, replacing his father Abraham van Ceulen as curator over the bankrupt (desolate) estate of Pieter Romborch (II) named Jacques Boursse (probably II) to replace him as curator over the estate during his absence abroad (actually in Brasil) together with Jacob Jansz. Beth The widow Romburch paid a tax of 5 f. living on the East side of the Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 30 vo, p. 8.) It is likely that she was Hester Mathieu or Matthijsen, widow of Pieter Romborch (II), who was buried in 1648 (DTB 1046/81vo).

Buyer NotesThe buyer is almost certainly identical with Cornelis Jansz. (van) Delft of R 21588. The house 't Soutvat, on 6 October 1643, was said to be on 111 Warmoesstraet, to the North of a house, named de grote Baers, when it was sold by execution to Paulus van Beselaer (Beselaen?) on 6 October 1643. On Paulus van Besel or Beselaen, see the NOTES to R 29572. At the time the house was occupied by Cornelis Segers, cloth dealer (Kam,Waar was dat huis op de Warmoestraat? 36/1). The St. Jansstraet was perpendicular to the Warmoesstraet.

BuyerJan Aertsz. achter de Nieuwe Kerck
Buyer FamilyAertsz., Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be the individual named Jan Arentsz. who was the testamenteur of Elbert Symonsz. Pool of INVNO 644, along with Barent Jansz., cooper (WK 5073/789, 10 December 1620). Barent Jansz., cooper in the soap boiling works of Jan Oom Claesz., was 42 years old in 1611 (NA 38, 2 August 1611). Jan Aertsz., cooper, appeared before the Orphan chamber on 19 January 1635 (WK 5073/789). The buyer may also be the individual of that name living on the Nieuwendijck who paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 40, p. 10). This address is more probable, given that Jan Aertsz. lived behind the N.K., than that of the other Jan Aertsz., living in the Colck near the Spardammerbruch, who paid 90 f. (ibid. fol. 74, p. 18).

BuyerAdriaen Mandekens in de Witte Voet
Buyer FamilyMandekens (Mondekens), Adriaen
Buyer NotesAdriaen Mondekens was in business with Jan de Marez Simonsz. of R 23332 with whom he shared an account in the Wisselbank (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 181). The widow of Adriaen Mondekens paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631. She was living on the Heeregracht, on the West side of the Koninck van Denemarcken (Kohier, fol. 293vo, p. 67). De Witte Voet was a house adjoining a herring-packing warehouse on the Nieuwendijck, between the Haarlemmersluijs and the Haarlemmerpoort (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 147). The regent Cornelis Pietersz. Hooft (the father of the writer Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft) who had lived there until about 1599 was at least initially a herring merchant. Adriaen Mandekens may also have been in this trade. It may be noted that Jacques Mandekens was named in a contract for shipping fish to Spain in 1594 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1931), p. 176.)

BuyerAbraham Seeu int huis van Cromhout
Buyer FamilySeeu (Seeuw, Zeeuw, Seeuwens), Abraham
Buyer NotesAbraham Seeu lived in the house of Cromhout, possibly Hendrick Cromhout of R 20492. In 1631, the latter lived on the dwarstraet van 't Spinhuijs. On the other hand, the huis van Cromhout may refer to the house called 't Cromhout on the Warmoesstraet. Abraham Seeu is probably identical with the merchant Abraham Seeuwens, born on 27 March 1578 in Middelburg, who married Catherine van Solt, the daughter of Hans van Solt de oude of R 29281, in 1603 (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 36, where his name is mistakenly written van Leeuwens. He left 100 f. to the Reformed Church and 1,800 f. to his mother Anna Seeuwens. He chose as guardians for his children Hans van Solt de oude (his partner in many Meditteranean ventures, of R 29281) and Cornelis Croone (II) (Pre-nuptial contract, 29 January 1629, NA 374, fol. 6, Extracts). On 27 March 1607, he was said to be a merchant living in London when Olivier Benten gave him a power-of-attorney to act on his behalf (NA 105, fol. 1220vo, Extracten). On 17 January 1612, Abraham Seeuwens co-insured some ships, together with with Claes Andriesz. of R 30086, Hans van Hanswyck (of R 31647), Pieter Egbertsz. Vinck, and Leenaert and Francoijs Pelgroms (NA 127, fol. 54, Extracten). Lenaert and Francoijs Pelgroms, who were brothers, were both merchants from Antwerp, who spent some time in Neurenburg before settling in Amsterdam (before 1595). Francois was born about 1574 and Lenaert in or before 1577. Francois died in 1616 and Lenaert in 1640 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 310). Abraham Seeuwens (or Seeuw) was said to be 50 years old and a broker in a deposition dated 29 September 1628 (see the NOTES to R 29979). This age confirms the birth date cited above. On 12 February 1613, Abraham Seeuwens and Jan Jansen van der Wiel signed a contract to make smalt (or blauwsel) in several mills (NA 376, fol. 67, Extracten). On 30 January 1615, Lunman Florisz., mason, declared at the request of Abraham Seeuwens that, in December 1614, had made an oven for his smalt manufacture in which Jan van der Wiel was to make colors for glass engravers (NA 378, fol. 65). On 19 February 1615, Jan Jansz., glass engraver, 36, declared at the request of Abraham Seeuwens that the glass engraver colors made to bake on glass regularly sell for 3 f. per pound and that he had bought some for that price from Jan van der Wiele (NA 374). On 15 April 1615. a contract was signed by Abraham Seeuwens and Jan Jansz. van der Wiele. The latter agreed to give up smalt making for ever, of which Abraham Seeuwens had taught him the art. He would get 500 f. from Seeuwens for doing so (NA 378, fol. 228). On 12 May 1631, Abraham Seeuwens, formerly wed to Catharina van Solt, daughter of Hans van Solt de oude, demands one sixth of the inheritance from Hans Rombouts accruing to the children of Solt, despite an order of the aldermen dated 25 April 1630 (NA 842). On 6 May 1635, Jacob Rombouts (probably of R 19454, as guardian of the four children of minor age of Abraham Seeuwens, namely IJsaack, 26, Cateleyn, 24, Anthony, 7, and Elisabeth, 8(?), whose late mother was Catelyne van Solt, declared that the children were due 1,800 f. each in her inheritance by their greataunt Francque (Francine) van Solt (WK 5073/789). He was still alive on 3 November 1637 when his son Anthonis Seeuwens revoked his testament and named as his universal heirs Johannes (baptized on 20 May 1604), Isaack (baptized on 6 October 1611 in the presence of Isaack Haeck of R 21211), and Elisabeth Seeuwens (baptized on 18 August 618), besides the legal share due to his father Abraham Seeuwens. He left his brother Mathijs Seeuwens 25 f. (the equivalent of the proverbial penny ?) (NA 416, fol. 312, Not. Jacob Jacobs, Extracten). The ages of the children given in the Orphan Chamber document of 1635 do not exactly match those just cited, but they are close enough to confirm their identification. The baptismal dates of the children of Abraham Seeuw or Sewens are taken from Fragment arenteel Van Solt by Wout Spies and Marten Jan Bok.

BuyerJeronimus de Haes
Buyer FamilyHaes (Haze), Jeronimus (Jeroen) de (I)
Buyer NotesOn 27 August 1605, Jeronimus de Haze, from Antwerp, 27 years old, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Helena van Juchteren, 20, assisted by her mother Gertruy Schenk and her uncle Wessel Schenk (DTB 411/574). Wessel Schenck, living in the Breestraet in 1606, was one of the creditors of the painter Govert Jansz. in 1616 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 833). On 18 November 1609, Anna van Juchteren, Helena's sister, from Aenholt, 19, assisted by her mother Gertruyd Schenk and her uncle Wessel Schenk, was betrothed to Cornelis Matelief de jonge, from Rotterdam and living there, 40 (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 319). On 2 September 1621, Jeremias de Haes and Helena van Juchteren had their daughter Helena baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Susanna de Haes and Hans Tell (DTB 5/362). Jeronimus de Haze I was the third largest investor in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (30,000 f.) among individuals of North Netherlandish origin (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 61). He was an outstanding merchant who carried on his business in company with Juliaen de Harduijn, of his son Jeronimus de jonge (II), and of Jan van der Straten (of R 27080). Between 1620 and 1623, he is known to have bought spices at a V.O.C. sale (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 223). He lived on the Singel and was the owner of the hofstede Distelberch. On 14 June 1634, he gave a deposition along with several other merchants trading with Venice about the weight equivalents of the pound in the two cities (see the NOTES to R 7706). In 1608, he was one of a number of merchants who petitioned the burgomasters for a revocation of the prohibition on cashiers to effect transfers of money (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 16.) Jeronimus de Haze lent the painter Jacob van Nieulandt 600 f. on 20 December 1621 (Obreen, Archief, vol. 6, p. 49). He paid a tax of 300 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the North side of the Meulenstraet (Kohier, fol. 59vo, p. 14). He was buried in the W.K. on 9 February 1644 (DTB 1100A/56). His son, Jeronimus de Haes II, was betrothed to Clara van Schoonhoven on 10 June 1637 (DTB 446/248). On 17 February 1639, Jeronimus de Haze de jonge (II) named his father Jeronimus de Haze (I) to appear before the V.O.C. on behalf of Dirck Vuytiers (Wuytiers, of R 7663) to transfer to him 3,000 f. worth of stock in the company that he owned (NA 1186, fol. 140, Not. J. de Vos). After the death of Clara, Jeronimus de Haze II remarried with Magdalena Julia, the daughter of Jacob Storm of R 31939. He was a director of the V.O.C. from 1652 until his death in 1681. Another son of the elder De Haze, named Johannes (baptized in Amsterdam on 3 March 1615, buried on 28 December 1643) married Maria Sweers (1621-1655), daughter of Leenart Sweerts (the brother of Manuel Sweerts of R 29288), on 12 October 1638 (information communicated by Marten Jan Bok). A daughter named Geertruijd de Haze (1607-1679) married Pieter Jansz. de Witt (of R 21359) on 2 November 1627 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 283). Jeronimus de Haes I was the putative brother of Hendrick de Haes II of R 28875.

Buyer NotesThe buyer cannot be Jan de Marees de oude, who died in 1604. It may be his son Jan Jansz. de Marees, who is also probably the buyer at R 27426. For bio information on Jan Jansz. de Marees, see the NOTES to R 27426. He may possibly be Jan Abrahamsz. de Marees who was married to Clara Baron on 22 August 1609, at the age of 26, but he is normally called by his full name including the patronymic Abrahamsz. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 491).

BuyerMeynert Woutersz.
Buyer FamilyWoutersz. (Wautersz.), Meynert
Buyer NotesOn 29 May 1608, Meynert Woutersz., 24 years old, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by his father Tobias Woutersz., was betrothed to Tannetje (Jannetje) Jans Brouwers, 20, living in the Stillesteech, assisted by her father Jan (Jansz.) Brouwer and her mother Neeltje Dircks (DTB 413/197). Tobias Woutersz. was a schutter in the company of Pieter Adriaensz. Raep, painted for the Handboogdoelen in 1603 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 134). Jannetje's father Jan or Hans Jansz. Brouwer lived in the Stillesteeg in 1606 when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery. Since 1616, Meyndert Woutersz. owned de vier Heemskinderen, a house op 't Water, next to the Sonnewijser, owned by the cartographer and publisher Willem Jansz. Blaeu of R 30917. De vier Heemskinderen was sometimes used as an inn where auction sales took place, including the sale held at the request of the painter Cornelis van der Voort of INVNO 687. Meyndert Woutersz. leased the house to his brother-in-law Jan Jansz. Brouwer, alias Johannes Jansonius, alias Jan Jansz. in de Pascaert, who like Willem Jansz. Blaeu, his competitor, published and sold maps and books. Hessel Gerritsz. of R 20968 was his apprentice. Jan Jansz. Brouwer de oude was followed by his son Jan Jansz. Brouwer de jonge. Jan Brouwer may be one of several individuals of that name cited in R 30089. On 1 January 1630, Jannetje Brouwer, wife of Meynert Woutersz., and Clartje van Dorp, wife of Heyndrick Brouwer, brought various assets to the Orphan Chamber that had come from the estate of Jan Brouwer, their father and father-in-law respectively. One of the heirs was Machteltje Brouwers, married to Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos of R 31021 (WK 5073/789). Meynert Woutersz., living on the Ooster Achterburchwal, paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 244 vo., p. 56). For details on Johannes Jansonius see I. van Eeghen, De familie van de drukker Jan Willemsz. Blaeu in Alkmaar en Amsterdam Jaarboek Amstelodamum 64(1972), pp. 91-93.) Meynert Woutersen was buried in the W.K. on 30 October 1632 (DTB 1100A/3)

BuyerHoffman inde Pylsteech
Buyer FamilyHoffman (Hoftman) (in de Pylsteech)
Buyer NotesThe buyer has not been identified. Neither of the likely candidates -- Marten Harmensz. Hoffman and Aernout Hoffman II -- are known to have lived in the Pijlsteech in 1610. The buyer cannot be Aernout Hoffman I, who invested 9000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares and freighted 7 ships between 1590 and 1602, since his widow was named in a deposition of 5 March 1605 (GAA, NA 20). Marten Hofman was living in the drye klyne zaec when he buried his child, coming from the brewery 't duyffgen, which was located on the Rockin, on 8 September 1617 (DTB 1044/26v). Marten Hoofman and his wife Angietien van Keulen had their daughter Anna baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Marija Hoffmans and Anneken van Beek on 23 June 1613 (DTB 5/70). Both Marten Harmensz. Hoffman and Aernout Hoffman (who were closely related) were merchants of Antwerp origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 304). Aernout Hoffman II, married to Geertruyt Hoffman, had his daughter Susanna baptized in the N.K. on 9 August 1611 (DTB 39/250). On 5 August 1621, a child under the arm of Arnout Hoffman was buried, coming from the Breestraet (DTB 1089A/28vo.) Marten Harmensz. Hooftman (1583-1628) married Angnes van Collen on 31 October 1606. He lived on the Heerengracht at the time of his death, but he may of course have lived on the Pijlsteeg in 1610 when the present lot was purchased (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 503). In 1606, when he purchased a lot in the Haarlem lottery, he lived in the house of Mr. Anthony Smijters behind the N.K. (GAA 140/5 F 1019). The following act clarifies the family relations in the Hoofman clan. On 18 June 1636, the honorable Andries and Zacharias Hooftmans, acting on behalf of the children of minor age of the late Marten Hooftman, and Abraham Alewijn (of R 25547) and Johan Fonteijn (of R 8357), each married to a daughter of Marten Hooftman, on one side, and Sr. Hans Boor, on the other, declared that they had reached a compromise whereby they had submitted their differences to arbitration by Joost Brest (of INVNO 1193), Jan de Marees Abrahamsz. (the son of Abraham de Marees de oude of INVNO 200), Samuel Gilles, and Jan Clocken. In the mean time Joost Brest had died. So both sides now appointed Hans van Loon (of R 7696) to replace him (NA 695A, omslag 73, fol. 420, Not. J. Warnaerts). The buyer may also be Christiaen Hoffman scholier who bought books at the auction sale of Anthony Smijters on 18 February 1626.

BuyerHendrick bode van Antwerpen ofte tot wiens versoeck
Buyer FamilyHendrick (bode van Antwerpen) (Kynen)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was bode (envoy, delegate) from Antwerp. He may be identical with Hendrick in de Maecht van Gent of R 21432. On 17 December 1613, notary Nicolaes Jacobsz., armed with a procuration from Jeronimus Verdussen and from mr. Guilliam van de Poele , living in Antwerp, notified Willem Jansz. (Blaeu) (of R 30917), book seller, of the following facts. Hieronimus Verdussen had sent a pack of books from Franckfort to Willem Jansz. in Amsterdam with the instruction that Willem Jansz. should ship them as promptly as possible to Livorno to the factor of Jaspar Vinario, living in Rome. Even though the books had arrived in Amsterdam in time for Willem Jansz. to ship them on a ship bound for Livorno, he did not do so, on the pretext that he had some claims on Vinario. Verdussen and Van der Poele had given Henrick Kynen, bode op Antwerp, the sums due (12 f. and 72 f. 1 st. resp.) The two Antwerp merchants protested the delay in dispatching the books. Willem Jansz. answered that he did not have to send the books until all the debts due to him by Vinario had been paid (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 78(1933), pp. 72-73). On 27 August 1614, Michiel Henricxsz., drawer-maker (laemaecker), 49, made a declaration at the request of Henryk Kynen, bode from Antwerp. The witness had spoken to Cathelyna int Suyckervriet, widow of Rombout van der Hoeye (I), spices merchant (cruydenier), who had said that her husband had died on 1 December 1611 (NA 377, film 377, fol. 326). On 10 February 1617, one or more of the sons of Hans Thijsz. de oude went tot Nicolaes Cop (probably to his inn in the Heijntje Hoecksteeg) with bode Hendrick to discuss de sack van Rubens and spent f 4:16:-- there. The sack in question was the failure of Rubens to deliver a painting to the Thijs brothers which he had promised in 1610 (see the TEXT of R 555 in Montias1.) The cyther-maker Nicolaes Coop (of R 30624) seems to have acted as the agent of Rubens in Amsterdam in this matter (for details, see Montias, Art at Auction in 17th Century Amsterdam 2002, pp. 157-8). On 24 May 1618, Hendrick Keynen was said to be messager de la ville d'Anvers a Paris. He was an intermediary in the transfer of an obligation that had belonged to Frans Pourbus I, now in the hands of the painter Cornelis Floris (II?), to which Pourbus's son Frans Pourbus II was entitled as the sole heir of his father (E. Toliopouliou, L'art et les artistes des Pays Bas a Paris, Unpublished Thesis, Universite de Paris IV, 1989, p.150). Kynen apparently died before 16 January 1630 when an inventory was taken of the possessions of Jan van Keerberghen. Among his household goods was a mirror which he had bought for f 9:--:-- at the auction sale of Hendrick Kynen, which was presumably the sale of his estate (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen p. 182).

BuyerJacob Jansz. Fortuyn
Buyer FamilyFortuyn, Jacob Jansz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably the son of Jan Jacobsz. Fortuyn, alias Fortuyntgen, who was buried on 20 December 1606. Jan Jacobsz. was a schipper and commanded a warship. He married Elsge Wichersdr. (Ramp) and later Tiet Gijsbertsdr. (of R 27757) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 355). Jacob Jansz. Fortuyn was a merchant who, on 19 October 1626, contracted with a glass blower from Middelburg to build a glass factory in Amsterdam (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 613). On 28 February 1623, Jacob Jansen Fortuyn, for himself and for his company, freighted a ship to Aerhuys, Randerhuysen, and other places in the Belt (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), p. 550). He was vaandrig (flagbearer) in the corporaalschap of Captain Abraham Boom, which was portrayed by Claes Lastman in 1622 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 169). On 27 December 1624, Clara Becx, spinster, assisted by Sr. Michiel van de Sande, painter, her guardian on this occasion, and Ysaack Ysaacx appeared before the notary and declared that they had come to an agreement regarding the child that Ysaacx had fathered from her. On 1 August 1625, the painter Isaack Isaacksz., who had promised to pay Clara Becx 100 f. a year, acknowledged receiving 114 f. in cash from Jacob Jansz. Fortuijn, who had guaranteed Isaacksz. payments to Clara of 114 f. in cash and 86 f. in clothing (Bredius, Künstler-inventare pp. 1479-80). Finally, on 17 April 1627, Isaack Isaacksz. signed a pre-nuptial contract with Clara Becx (ibi.d p. 1481). On 14 September 1637, the honorable Jacob Jansz. Fortuijn named his brother-in-law Pieter Jansen Blauwenhaen (of R 37242) to collect money due to him from Willem Wynantsz., formerly glassblower in Middelburgh (NA 521, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). The portrait of Jacob Jansz. Fortuijn is recorded in the inventory of Maghtelda Blaeuwenhelm, widow of Gerard de Harde (INVNO 239, R 5576 of Montias2). Jan Jansz. Fortuyn, who was surety, along with the painter Jan Jeuriaensz., in the purchase of a house by Pieter Tack, cloth dealer, from the children and heirs of the painter Pieter Isaacksz. on 28 January 1627 was probably Jacob Jansz. Fortuyn's brother (WK 5073/913).

Buyer NotesThere were several houses in 17th century Amsterdam called roode Molen or roode Molentje. De roode Molen was situated op 't water in 1568 and was then owned by Marten Hendricksz. van Marcken, grain dealer (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 265). There was also a house called het roode molentien on the Bloemstraet, in which a certain Claes Jacobsz. died in 1617 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 54(1962), p. 105).
