BuyerDirck Stoffels weduwe
Buyer Family(Martens, Hillegond), widow of Dirck Stoffels (Backer, Boocker)
Buyer NotesThe beer distributor (bierbeschooier) Dirck Stoffelsz. bought a large house on the Bierkay (on the O.Z. Voorburgwal) on 15 May 1587, called in de twee witte Leeuwen (Wijnman, Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, p. 120). On 5 December 1587, Dirck Stoffelsz. Boocker (signs) was betrothed to Hillegont Martens, from Hoorn (DTB 762/106). On 2 October 1588, Dirrick Stoffelsz. biersteker and Hijlgont Martens had their daughter Sijtgen baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Belij Meijnerts (DTB 1/375). Dirck Stoffelsz. was the headmen of the guild of the bierbeschoiers (who distributed beer imported from other cities) when he was cited in that capacity in in 1599 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 69(1929), p. 568). The address on the Bierkay of the owner of the goods sold strengthens this identification, as does the fact that Philips Leneertsz., another one of the headmen cited in the same source, was also a buyer at the present sale. Dirck Stoffelsz. Backer (an error for Bocker?), bierbeschooijer, invested 3,600 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 174). On 20 April 1621, Johannes Victorinus, doctor in both laws, 30, living on the Coningsgraft, was betrothed to Aefje Dircx, 27, assisted by her mother Hillegond Martens, living on the Delfse Bierkay (J.H.W. Unger, De werken van J. van den Vondel, volume 1637-1639, 1888-1893, p. 168). Johannes Victorinus, advocate, poet, and friend of Vondel, was the testamentary guardian of the children of Jan Thivaert of R 20955. He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628 and had his youngest son baptized in the Remonstrant Church in 1633 (Wijnman, Uit de kring van Rembrandt en Vondel, p. 121).

BuyerJacob Vosch
Buyer FamilyVosch, Jacob
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be identical with the ebony (frame) worker Jacob Vos who died before 9 September 1633 (WK 5073/789). He is less likely to be identical with Jacques de Vos, the paelknecht who collected small sums from bargemen who docked near the Nieuwe Brugge (op 't Water) (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 47). On 24 April 1608, Jacques de Vos, from Gend, 26 years old, was betrothed to Neeltje Claes Koeckebacker, 28, living on the Singel, assisted by Claes Jacobsz. Kockebacker, her father, and her mother Anneken Willems (DTB 413/165). On Claes Jacobsz. Koeckebacker, see R 28510. Jacques de Vos, op 't paelhuijs, living op t' Water, paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 72vo., p. 18). Jacques de Vos died before 13 August 1634, when his widow had a witness testify about the linen, damask and cotton goods she had caused Daniel Jansz. van Beuningen to sell at auction. The witness declared that Van Beuningen had charged her 3 stuivers per gulden for his salary but he had not shown her the accounting for the sale (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). Note that Jacob Pietersen, of INVNO 951, the father of the painter Pieter Codde, was also a paalknecht.

BuyerPhilips Lenertsz.
Buyer FamilyLenertsz., Philips
Buyer NotesAll appearances to the contrary, Philips Lenertsz., shoemaker, who was married to Heyltje Jansdr., is identical with the individual of that name who became a beer distributor (bierbeschooier). Philips Lenersz. signed a petition along with other bierbeschooiers (including Dirck Stoffelsz., whose widow was one of the buyers at the sale) in 1599 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 568). This identification is supported by the fact that Jan Andriesz. Kaen, the late owner of the goods sold, was a bierstecker (also a beer distributor) and that Kaen collected the money that Philips Lenertsz. paid for shares in the Haarlem lottery in 1606 (see the TEXT to R 610 of Montias1). On 6 July 1616, Aert Lambertsz. Kock, who seems to have been the half brother of Philips Lenertsz., sold a house called de Wilde Man on the Warmoesstraet (no. 144) to Gerrit Roseboom, secretaris of the city of Amsterdam. Philips Lenars, bierbeschoijer, was one of the two sureties for the sale. The house was next to that of Anthony Claesz. de jonge to the North and that of Hans Wyderhuysen (of R 29463) to the South (J.G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in the Warmoesstraat? 1968, p. 31/2 and p. 36/2). On 22 June 1618, the masters of the Orphan Chamber appointed Aert Lambertsz. Cock, the uncle of Philips Lenertsz.'s children, as their guardian (WK 5073/513, fol. 169). Philips Lenertsz., living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, on the corner of the Molsteeg, was married to Heyltgen Jansdr. on 8 November 1586. He was the father of Michaƫl van den Broeck of R 32429, who married Clara Rotgans on 3 May 1622, and of Jan or Johannes van den Broeck, who married Clara's sister, Machelina Rotgans, on 17 December 1624 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 171). Willem Claesz. Leydecker (of INVNO 1171 and R 24922) was betrothed to Maritgen Philips, the daughter of Philips Lenertsz., on 18 December 1614. She was 24 years old and living on the Bierkay (DTB 418/274).

BuyerSymon Jan Vechters
Buyer FamilyVechters, Symon Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of Jan Vechtersz., fats dealer, who had been burgomaster before the Alteration. He was a beer distributor (bierbeschooier). Both father and son were Roman Catholic. Symon Jan did the accounts for the rental of the Karthuizenklooster (later Karthuizenhoof) owned by Gerrit Rijkelsma, the widower of Jannetje Verschuijl of INVNO 723, in 1612 (Van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 81(1989), p. 55). He was the cousin of the bookbinder Jan Benningh, whom he assisted on the occasion of his betrothal to Aeltjen Willems on 20 September 1616 (DTB 42/296). He owned the house De gulde starre on the North side of the Bloemstraet some time in the period 1613-1625 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 54(1962), p. 103). On 17 July 1596, Symon Jan Vechtersz. was named guardian by the Orphan Chamber over the children of Dirck Meeusz. (WK 5073/513, fol. 92vo.) It was probably his son Jan Vechtersz., who lived in a house in Anckeveen and was said to be married to the sister of Mr. Simon van Veen, who in turn was the father of Cunera van Veen, the wife of the advocate Jan Engels (or Ingel) of R 7620. All four were R.C. For the accusation that Jan Vechtersz. was living in a house in which Remonstrant conventicles were held (an allegation rejected in a letter by P.C. Hooft), see R 7620.

BuyerJan Jansz. [crossed out: Andriesz.] de soon
Buyer FamilyKaen, Jan Jansz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of the late Jan Andriesz. Kaen of the present inventory. On 30 March 1605, Jan Jansz. Kan was betrothed to Sara van Baserode (DTB 411/459). Sara van Baserode was the daughter of Hans Pietersz. van Baserode, cloth merchant, from Antwerp, who owned three houses in Amsterdam (NA 3, fol. 390, Not. Pylorius, Extracten, and Gelderblom, Zuidnederlandse kooplieden, p.184). Hans van Baserode died before 15 January 1610 when his widow, Diewert Claes, had her death inventory taken in Amsterdam (NA 267, film 136). Sara van Baserode was probably a close relative (perhaps the cousin) of Emanuel van Baserode of INVNO 458, considering that the latter was named executor of the testament of Hans Pietersz. on 2 November 1603 (NA 4, fol. 515, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). On 20 January 1621, the children of Jan Jansz. Kaen, heirs of his father Jan Andriesz. Kaen, sold a house situated outside the St. Anthonijspoort (GAA, WK 5073/913).

BuyerJan Cuyper
Buyer FamilyCuyper (Cuijper, Kuijper), Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be one of three individuals named Jan Cuijper. The first, Jan Cuijper I, was born about 1565; the second, Jan Cuijper II, about 1583. The third, Jan Cuijper III, who lived on the Nieuwendijck in 1631 (at which time he paid a tax of 45 f.) cannot be identical with Jan Cuijper I, who died before 1621 (see below). He may have been his son. On 2 January 1592, Jan Cuijper (I), 27 years of age, living op den Dam, assisted by Pieter Ryckertsz., his father, was betrothed to Aaltgen Symons Appelman, assisted by her brother Huybert Symonsz. Appelman (DTB 406/116). Huybert Symonsz. Appelman, who was married to Aeltge Arents, died before 14 May 1637 when his widow went to live with Griet Jans van Kern (?), the widow of Hendrick Hendricksz. (INVNO 1188). Simon Appelman (1572-1632), who lived on the Zeedick. married Annetge Claesdr. Trebijn, the daughter of Claes Trebijn and Niesge Sijbrandsdr. Appelman (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 70). Note that Aeltge Appelman, the daughter of Balthasar Simonsz. Appelman, who was the brother of Aaltgen Simons and Huybert Simonsz. Appelman, married Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen of R 23334 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 116). Dirck van Os, the brother of Hendrick van Os of R 21382 invested 1,200 f. for Jan Cuyper (I) in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, ibid. p. 222). Jan Cuijper (I) was one of the Schutters in the Corporalschap of Jan Jansz. Carel (I). whose group portrait was painted by Gerrit Pietersz. (1604). In that painting Jan Cuyper holds a piece of paper with his name on it, followed by the word handrathi, the meaning of which is not known. Sijbrant Appelman, the father-in-law of Jan Cuyper, may be identical with Isbrant Appelman, one of the schutters portrayed in the same group portrait (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p.309). In 1618, Jan Cuijper (probably I) was cited as one of the ingelanden of the Zijp polder (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 33(1936), p. 39). In 1622, Cornelis Felt submitted an accounting to the Orphan Chamber for the two children of Jan Cuyper (I), who must have died not long beforehand (WK 5073/1191). Cornelis Felt (or Feldt) was a witness to the contract between Hans Thijsz. and Rubens of 1 November 1610 (R 27698). In that year, he was opsiender generael van 't Packhuis van de V.O.C. He was then 44 years old (NA 38, 13 July 1611, film 52). He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 9 August 1635, Jan Cuijper (II), 52, and Jan Albertsz. Kemaet (?), 42, corn carriers (corendragers), declared at the request of Pauwels de Hoge that they had taken delivery of some goods on behalf of De Hoge (NA 695A, film 4981, Not. J. Warnaerts). It is unlikely that Jan Cuijper II, a corn carrier, is identical with Jan Cuijper III, who paid a tax of 45 f. and lived in the house of or near Jan Cuijper I. The buyer was probably Jan Cuijper I. Finally, it may be noted that, on 6 September 1632, Gysbert Cuijper, living in Hoorn, younger brother of Jan Cuijper (II or III), who had taken care of him during his youth, acknowledged his brother Jan's good accounting of the funds to which he was entitled (NA 843, fol. 271, Not. Hoogeboom_.

BuyerWillem Pauw
Buyer FamilyPauw, Willem
Buyer NotesThe buyer Willem Pauw (1582-1615), son of Jacob Pauw, was kerckmeester in 1611. He was the son of Jacob Pauw, born in Amsterdam in 1558, who died in Delft in 1620. His mother was Machteld Wilems van Heemskerck, from Leiden (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 12). On 20 October 1607, Willem Jacobsz. Pauw, 29, assisted by his uncle Arent ten Grootenhuys, was betrothed to Ludewijn Frans Oetgens, assisted by her parents Frans Heynsz. Oetgens, burgermeester, and Aeltgen van Hoef (DTB 413/28). Ludewijn Frans lived from 1584 to 1624. On Arent ten Grootenhuys's inventory of 1616, see INVNO 540. On 5 August 1615, Willem Pauw and Jehan Raye, merchants in Amsterdam, freighted a ship to Koningsbergen and Rouen (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 185(1983), p. 386). Pieter Jansz. Reael of R 28042 married Weijntgen Frans Oetgens, the sister of Ludewijn Frans.

BuyerAndries Jansz.
Buyer FamilyJansz., Andries (Kaen)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably Andries Jansz. Caen or Kaen, the son of Jan Andriesz. Kaen, at whose request the goods were sold. On 15 November 1602, Andries Jansz. Kaan, 32 years old, living in the Nieustadt near the Korsgen Poort, assisted by his father Jan Kaan, was betrothed to Machtelt Barthouts, 20, assisted by her mother Tiete Cornelis Codden and her neve Pieter Vlaming (DTB 410/224). He was the brother of Jan Jansz. Kaen and perhaps of Willem Jansz. Kaan (of R 29717 and R 27915 resp.). For additional information on the Kaan family, see R 567 of Montias1.
