Buyerde weduwe (Maria Berwijns)
Buyer FamilyBerwijns (Berrewijns), Maria
Buyer NotesOn 25 March 1605, Steven Pinel was betrothed to Maria Berwijns, 23 years old. She was assisted by her father Bernard Berwijns (DTB 411/451). Bernart Berwijns was a rich merchant from Antwerp, who left the city in or about 1585, and was first noted in Amsterdam in 1589. He invested 18,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares and 22,200 f. in the second in 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 259). Married to Cornelia Anthonis, Bernard Berwijns was also the father of Cornelia Berwijns who married the merchant Pieter Rombouts, according to an Orphan Chamber document of 15 May 1629 (WK 5073/789). He and his putative brother Hans Berwijns had business dealings with Hans Thijsz. (of INVNO 690) (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 169). On 17 September 1626, the Orphan Chamber named Hans Francx and Pieter Rombouts as guardians over the minor children left by Bernaert Berwyns and Cornelia Anthonis (WK 5073/513). After the death of her husband, Maria (or Maijke) Berrewijns became a merchant (koopvrouw) on her own (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 240). She remarried with Steven Gerard (Laurens) on 22 January 1615 (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 118). Steven Gerards was a merchant, originally from Luik, who spent some time in Dordrecht before settling in Amsterdam, where he was first noted in 1615 (Gelderblom, op. cit., p. 301). Maria Berwijns and Steven Gerard Laurens lived in a house on the Keisersgracht which had been built for her by the master mason Harmen Hesseling (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 57). The son of Steven Gerard and Maria Berwijns, also named Steven Gerard (a.k.n. Stephanus Geraerds), married Isabella Coymans, the daughter of Joseph Coymans, on 4 October 1644 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 764).
