BuyerGillis Dondeur
Buyer FamilyDondeur (Dodeur), Gillis (I)
Buyer NotesAccording to an act dated 9 October 1609, Gillis Dodeur was born in Filz le Marechal in the Land of Luik and was married to Catherine de Windt (NA 58, fol. 155, Not. Heylinc, Extracten). In 1606, he was residing in Porto in Portugal (NA 104, fol. 117, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). In Porto, he was the employee of and bookkeeper for the Amsterdam merchant Hans de Schott (Kernkamp, De handel op den vijand, p.261) He signed freighting contracts on 5 May 1600 and 4 May 1616 (the latter to Oporto with Samuel Godijn, of INVNO 1123, and Jan Stassaert, a merchant of Antwerp origin) (NA 53, fol. 661vo, NA 153, 22vo. Extracten, and Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 314). In 1614, he was one of the co-founders of the Noordsche Compagnie to engage in whaling near the coasts of Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen island. His co-founders were Lambert van Tweenhuysen (1567-1627), Antonie Monier, Leonard Rans, Jaques Mercijs, and Ysbrant Dobbes (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 28(1941). On Lambert Tweenhuysen, see also the NOTES to R 29906 and E. Pelinck, De portretten van Lambert van Tweenhuysen and Janneken Campherbeke in Maandblad Amstelodamum 46(1959), pp. 63-66). On 30 November 1622, Gillis Dodeur was said to be a merchant, 50 years old, when he made a deposition at the house of Casper Robijn concerning the exchange of English kousen (hose) for sugar (NA 747, fol. 450-2, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). On 29 April 1624, certain questions were asked by Gillis Dodeur, merchant, from Francisco de Cassaris regarding a suit, lodged in November 1620, by Hendrick Broen (of R 7618), Jacques van Uffelen (of R 7706), Paulus van Gansepoel and Gillis Dodeur. On Paulus van Gansepoel I, see R 7618 (NA 747, fol. 1019-1021, Not. Bruyningh, Extracten). On 10 November 1624, Willem Watson had notary Cluyt insinuate Andries Andriesz. (probably of R 29031), Gillis Dodeur, Johan Vernadt, Joost and Abraham Verbeeck (probably III cited in R 36982), Jean van Lier, Martin Hoffman, and Philips Colijn Jochumsz. (of INVNO 199), all merchants, who had insured a ship whose crew mutineered on the way to Ireland (NA 368, fol. 578, Not. W. Cluyt, Extracten). On 6 June 1626, Jan Gerritsz. Bruyn, merchant in Middelburg, declared at the request of Willem Watson, English merchant, that Willem Langhorn, English merchant in Leghorn, had loaded 4 chests of paintings on his (Watson's) ship de Hope coming from Civita Vecchia, in the name of His Majesty the King of England and 29 chests with (precious?) stones and paintings in the name of the Count of Arundel, in order to deliver them in England. The merchandise had arrived in Amsterdam and would be forwarded to England at the first opportunity (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.72). William Watson was said to be 40 years old in a deposition dated 15 March 1632 (NA 694A, Not. J. Warnaerts). Gillis Dodeur signed a petition in 1645 with many other Amsterdam merchants calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 89). On 29 September 1628, Jan van Harinckhouck and Cornelis Maignaert, merchants, and Hans Barentsz. Bontemantel (of R 31983), 61 years old, Gillis Dodeur, 57, Abraham Seeuwens, 50, and Abraham Cloeck, 38, brokers, declared at the request of Jan Kuijsten (I), merchant in Amsterdam, that it was usual for insurers (assuradeurs) to sign the insurance policies they issued (NA 693, fol. 33-39vo). On Abraham Seeuwens (or Seeuw), see R 29592. Jan Kuijsten I (Cuijsten) was the father-in-law of Hendrick Kemp of R 25363. On 12 June 1634, Hans Barents Bontemantel (of R 31983). 66, Gillis Dodeur, 63, Samuel Hooffman, 47, Herman Thomasz., 44, and Paulus Schoonhoven, 39, all brokers, made a deposition concerning the practice of insuring ships in Amsterdam (NA 701, fol. 663, Not. Warnaerts, Extracten). Paulus Harmensz. Schoonhoven, a broker in hemp and other goods, was portrayed by Rembrandt in The Nightwatch (E.H. Haverkamp-Begemann, Rembrandt: The Nightwatch, Princeton, 1982, p. 31). On 11 April 1656, Paulus Schoonhoven and Pieter van der Venne (II, cited in R 40721) received 2000 f. from the proceeds at auction of the paintings left by Daniel Adriaensz. (who has not been identified) (WK 5073, Weescamer boeck van Abraham Jansz.) Gillis Dodeur de jonge (II) who was almost surely the buyer's son and Herman Tomasz., 46, sworn brokers, made a deposition at the request of Nicolaes Rochus van der Capelle, son of Rochus Pietersz. van der Capelle of R 26958, concerning a ship laden in Lisbon on 18 February 1638 (NA 696A, film 4982). In an act of 12 February 1639, Gillis Dodeur de jonge, 30, was again said to be a sworn broker (NA 1186, Not. J. de Vos). On 28 August 1636, father and son became citizens of Amsterdam (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base).

BuyerAlexander van den Bergh
Buyer FamilyBergh (Berge), Alexander van der
Buyer NotesAlexander van der Bergh was a merchant, born in Antwerp, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1596 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 295). He freighted 5 ships between 1601 and 1608 and 6 ships between 1609 and 1616 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 599 and 185(1983), p. 627.) In 1608, he joined a number of Amsterdam merchants in a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of a prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). He is also probably identical with Alexander van der Berge, cloth merchant, who was the subject of an insinuatie for his failure to deliver 300 ponden coleurt flossyde in exchange for 15 (bolts of) woolen cloth on 12 January 1615 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 102.) He went bankrupt in 1617 and landed in jail (S. Hart in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 70(1978), p. 59). On 29 October 1599, Alexander van den Bergh, from Antwerp, 28 years old, having lived 13 years in the St. Annastraet, assisted by his uncle Jacques de Keyser and his sister Etteken van den Bergh, was betrothed to Metgen de Leeuw, from Antwerp, assisted by Tanneken Karbeel, her mother, and Jaques Karbeel and Metgen Tymons, her uncle and aunt, living on the the Rockin (DTB 409/76). Jacques Karbeel (or Carbeels) was a merchant, originally from Antwerp, first noted in Amsterdam in 1587 (Gerlderblom, op.cit. p. 297). Together with Jan le Bruyn and Jacques Carbeel, he lent money to Sion Lus (or Luls) to help finance his Moscow trade venture. When Sion Luls failed to meet his obligations in 1606, Van den Bergh demanded that he sell his silverware, jewels, and V.O.C. shares for 8,000 f. (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Russland en de Nederlanden pp. 359-360). On Sion Luls, see the NOTES to R 21578. On 24 October 1617, the painter Pieter Bruneaux declared that he had painted toletten (cloth decorative paintings) on commission (opdracht) from Alexander van den Berch and that he had delivered them (NA 3642, fol. 130, cited by J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 307.) About 1 March 1629, Metteken (Metgen) de Leeuw, wife of Alexander van der Bergh, caused a deposition to be made by Maijken de Vries, the widow of the painter Paulus de Vries, concerning a tempestuous conversation she had had heard between the town secretary Daniel Mostaert (of R 21940) and Jasper Quingetti (of INVNO 545) (NA 834, Not. Jacob Bruyningh). Jasper Quingetti, to whom Alexander van der Bergh, owed a good deal of money, became insolvent in 1617 in the wake of Van der Bergh's bankruptcy (Hart, loc. cit.)

BuyerJan van Velen
Buyer FamilyVelen (Veelen), Jan van
Buyer NotesOn 1 April 1606, Jan van Veelen, 20 years old, living on the Rockin, assisted by his father Gerrit van Veelen, was betrothed to Margriet Buijll, 19, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by her godmother Dieuwer Claes. her guardian Bartholomeus Claesz., and her swager Elbert Symonsz. Jonckheijn (DTB 411/705). Bartholomeus Claesz. is probably identical with the Delft-located merchant of that name, the father of Hugo van der Mast of R 31404. Elbert Symonsz. Jonckheijn was the wealthy merchant whose goods were sold at auction in 1618 (INVNO 572). Gerrit van Veelen was also a buyer at auction (R 21172). Femmetge van Veelen, the sister of Jan van Veelen, was married to Hendrick Dircksen Boelens of R 31402. Jan and his father Gerrit van Velen shared equally the costs of freighting a ship to Riga in 1606; Jan van Veelen and other business partners freighted three ships between 1609 and 1616 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 291; 185(1983), p. 631). Both were merchants in Amsterdam. In 1606, Jan van Veelen, living on the Rockin in de Hartoch van Cleef, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (67/48 F560). After the death of Jan van Veelen, Margriet Buijll remarried with Willem van Dorst in December 1619 (DTB 424/82).

BuyerJan Leeschebon in de Pelicaen
Buyer FamilyLeeschebon (Leschevin), Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably Jean Simonsz. Leschevin, born in Antwerp about 1574. On 20 May 1600, he was betrothed to Janneken van Ruyven Cornelisdr., living in the Warmoesstraet. He was then 26 years old and living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal. He was assisted by his father Simon Leschevin. She was 22 and assisted by her mother Jannetgen Heyndricksdr. (DTB 409/102). Simon Leschevin, also born in Antwerp, is first noted in Amsterdam in 1588 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 306). Together with his father Symon, Jean Leschevin invested 1200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. He had an account of 2 folios in the Wisselbank in 1611 and 1612 and of 3 folios in 1615 and 1620 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 157.) In 1631, Jan Leschevin paid a tax of 200 f. living on the East side of the Breestraet, below the Sluijs (Kohier, fol. 227 vo., p. 52). On or about 7 May 1631, Pieter Geelkercken, merchant in Amsterdam, ceded to Abraham Anthonisz. (of R 20033) 600 f. that he claimed from the distribution of lots in Holstermeer and from the costs that he had incurred there. The land had belonged to Adriaen Beverwyck (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). On 21 March 1632, Abraham Anthonisz., 48,, declared at the request of Pieter Gellekerck, in the name and for the account of Adriaen Ewousz. Beverwyck, to have received from the hands of Jan Lechevin, the sum of 800 f., of which one fourth part was owed to Beverwyck for his part in the freighting of the ship Neptune, as ordered by the Lords of the Admiralty (NA 843). On 31 October 1633, Jean Leschevin testified with Joris van Hengel regarding the arbitration of a dispute (mediated by Consalvo Romitti) between the brothers Samuel and Daniel Godin, one one side, and Jacques Schot who was married to the widow of Charles Godin, on the other (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On the Godin family, see the TEXT to R 805 of Montias1.

BuyerMr. Anthony Smyters
Buyer FamilySmyters (Smijters), Mr. Anthony
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a well-known school master, the author of a book on arithmetic (published in 1605). On 17 August 1598, he bought a house on the N.Z. Voorburchwal from Laurens Bicker (Maandblad Amstelodamum 46(1959), p. 167). On 29 July 1600, Anthoni Smijters, French schoolmaster (i.e. teacher of French), from Antwerp, widower of Margrietje Marchiere, living in the N.Z. Voorburgwal, was betrothed to Maria Gras, widow of Jan Thomas Vermeulen (5 years a widow), assisted by her brother Jan Gras (of R 27064) (DTB 409/211). He bought the citizenship of Amsterdam in 1604. He ran a school for the scions of eminent families. In 1611, for instance, Hans Thijsz. de oude (of INVNO 690) sent his son Hans II (of R 27698), who was then 8 years old, to study arithmetic and accounting with Smijters (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 198). He was a member of the Brabant Rederijkerskamer and was a friend of its foreman Zacharias Heyns (ibid.) He was living behind the N.K. in 1606, when several of his pupils bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 140/54 F 1022 etc..) He was a convinced Calvinist who attacked Reinier Teller for his excessive religious irenism, shortly after the publication of Teller's Medegesangh of 1615 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 36(1949), p.. 69). For the death inventory of Anthony Smijters, dated 12 February 1626, see INVNO 619. On 6 June 1631, an agreement took place among the heirs of Mr. Anthony Smijters. Francoijs de Schot, as brother of Cornelis de Schot, guaranteed the agreement (WK 5073/903). Francoijs de Schot may be the attorney of INVNO 621, the son of Franchoijs de Schot I of R 23342. Cornelis de Schot, one of the heirs, was an advocate in Mechelen. Another heir was Elisabeth de Schot, who was herself an heir of Janneken de Schot, daughter of Anthonij Smijters (from a later marriage ?). Jacques de Schot was a witness at the baptism of Charles, a son of Carel de Latfeur (see notes to R 20471.) He also was one of the amateurs of Nederduytsche Poesy who provided subsidies for the poet Jan Jansz. Starter in 1622 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 54). Jacques Fransz. de Schot, merchant and cloth dealer, spent some time in Middelburg before settling in Amsterdam, where he was first noted in 1619 (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 313). He died before 8(?) June 1643, when his widow, Rachel le Rideur, named Charles Godijn (II?) in a procuration to transfer lands that she owned (NA 997. film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren). Charles Godin II, who seems to have been the brother of Rachel Godin, was the executor of the testament of David van Baerle and Rachel Godin of INVNO 118. Another daughter of Anthony Smijters married Anthony Pineel (or Panneel) I (of INVNO 218 and R 23324) (Beck, Spiegel van mijn leven, Haags dagboek 1624, p. 226). Anthony Smijters was the uncle of Samuel Smijters of R 20183. It may be the son of Anthony Smijters, named Jean Anthonisz. Smijters, who married Anna de la Tombe, the daughter of Desiderius de la Tombe and of Anna van Eyk, on 28 December 1613. He died in 1617 as his widow declared when she remarried on 11 July 1626 (I. van Eeghen, De Familie de la Tombe en Rembrandt in Oud Holland 71(1956), p.44).

BuyerMr. Willem in de Nes
Buyer FamilyWillem, Mr. (in de Nes) (Bartges, Bartgens) (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably Mr. Willem Bartge(n)s (Amsterdam 1569-Zwolle 1638), francoysche schoolmeester, author of manuals on arithmetic, very popular as a teacher of the sons of Amsterdam merchants, and poet. He invested 300 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 131). On 1 August 1592, Willem Gerritsz. Bartgens, schoolmeester, 22, living in the Pijlsteech, assisted by Gerrit van Swech (?), his father, was betrothed to Maritje Jans, 19, assisted by her sister Jannetje Jans (DTB 406/212). On 11 May 1614, Mr. Willem Bartgen and his wife Maritje Jans had their son Willem baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Johannis van der Rosiere and Jannetje Bartges (DTB 5/105). Johannis van der Rosiere, alias Jan Rogier, (of INVNO 368) formed a company with his brother-in-law Laurens van Otteren to exploit a steel-making process in 1627. Balthasar Gerritsz., Vermeer's grandfather, was apparently expected to join in this venture (Montias, Vermeer and his milieu pp. 86-7.) In 1606, several individuals living at the house of Willem Bartges (probably his boarding students) and six of his children bought lots for various amounts in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 50/8, 50/9, 50/10 and 50/11 F 389). A son of Willem Bartgens, named Johannes, known as jonge Bartjen, was betrothed to Catharina Zacharias Heijns, the daughter of the book seller and printer Zacharias Heijns (of INVNO 1001) on 30 March 1624 (Beck, Spiegel van mijn leven, 1624, p. 248). Abraham Bartjes, a teacher of French residing on the Betaviendwarsstraet, whose inventory, dated 14 December 1648, contained twee efigien van den constrijcken schilder Rembrandt met sijn vrouw, may have been Willem Bartges's brother (NA 1785, fol. 396, cited in Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 262). Willem Bartgens (II), who was 29 in 1636, may also have been the schoolmaster's son (see the deposition in the NOTES to R 1806).
