BuyerHans Rombouts
Buyer FamilyRombouts, Hans
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the brother of the late Jacques Rombouts. On 9 October 1593, Hans Rombout, ca. 31 years old, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, born in Antwerp, assisted by his mother Catharina Reygers, was betrothed to Susanna Niquets, born in Antwerp, 24, living on the O.Z. Voorbugwal, assisted by her father Jan Niquet and her mother Margriete Bosman (DTB 406/420). In August of the same year 1593, Hans Rombout assisted his sister Jacomina upon her betrothal to Pieter van Peenen. Jan Niquet's famous collection, after the death of his widow, was sold on 19 January 1613 (INVNO 539). He lived in Amsterdam in 't blauwe huys on the Heerengracht. After the death of Susanna in 1618, he remarried with Adriana Coolen on 22 September 1620. She was the widow, first, of Lieve Lampsins, and, second, of Elbert Simonsz. Jonckheyn (of INVNO 572). He was buried, leaving no children, on 4 April 1624 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 308). Gheraert Reynst invested 7200 f. in V.O.C. shares in 1602 on behalf of Hans Rombouts (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 140). In a deposition of 1622, he declared that he had been in business for 17 years in a compagnie with Hans Vrancx (of R 20713), Samuel Blommaert (of R 21578), Lucas van de Venne (of R 27635), and three other Amsterdam merchants (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden p. 231). His widow, together with her children, paid a tax of 1050 f., living on the Heregracht, on the West side of the Lelijgracht (Kohier, fol. 305vo, p. 70). On 19 May 1636, Adriana Cool, widow of Hans Rombouts, and Wilhelm van Rodenburch named Jan Ariaensz. van Delft to collect money due to them (NA 843, Not. Hoogenboom).

BuyerSebald de Wilde
Pre Lot Headerden 25e ditto [marty 1609]
Buyer FamilyWilde, Sebald de (de oude, I)
Buyer NotesOn 25 March 1600, Sebald de Wilde, from Antwerp, silk dyer, 30 years old, living in the Verwerijen, assisted by his godmother Lyntgen de Wilde, was betrothed to Catelijne Pungnee, from Doornik, 24 (DTB 409/134). On 31 August 1603, Sebalt de Wilde and Cathrijna de Wilde had their son Joannes baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hans Willemsz., Francijntgen Sennepaerts, and Pierijne van Bree (DTB 4/73). Hans Willemsz. was the father-in-law of Coenraed de Wilde de jonge of R 30057. Coenraed de Wilde de oude and Sebald de Wilde de oude may have been brothers. In 1606, Sebald de Wilde, dyer, living in de roode engel, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 54/83 F 432). Sebald de Wilde de oude (I) was the father of Sebald de Wilde de jonge (II), who also became a dyer. It was probably the father at whose request silver and clothing were sold by the Orphan Chamber on 11 December 1629. On 7 November 1633, Sebald de Wilde de jonge took an apprentice for two years. The apprentice's father Dirck Lemkens undertook to pay De Wilde 50 f. a year (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 34). On 25 October 1638, Sebalt de Wilde (I), leaving no minor children, having lived in de Verwerijen, was buried. 8 f. were paid on his behalf to the Church (DTB 1130/77). On 2 December 1633, Gertruyd Jans de Wijs (probably the daughter of the broker Jan de Wijs, who is not identical with Jan Wijs of R 20564), the wife of Sebald de Wilde (II), approved her husband's procuration (NA 409, not. Jacob Jacobsz.) Sebald de Wilde II was 21 years old when he was betrothed to Gertruyd Jans on 28 November 1626. On 13 October 1639, Sebalt de Wilde II appeared, together with Gillis Marselier, before the Orphan Chamber as guardians of Matys, 7, and Hans, 4, the children of Jannetken Matys, whose late father was Hans de Wilde, cloth merchant (WK 5073/789). Sebald de Wilde de jonge (II) was said to be 31 years old in 1631, at which time he was one of the overseers of the silk weaving guild. If he has been correctly identified, he understated his age by about 5 years on that occasion (Van Dillen, op.cit., p.8). He was said to be 41 on 4 December 1643 (a further inconsistency) (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 393).

BuyerJan Pietersz. du Bien
Buyer FamilyBien, Jan Pietersz. du
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of Pieter Jansz. du Bien, Schout of Rotterdam in 1560, and of Catharina Cornelis van Vlooswijck. He was the brother of Anna Pieters du Bien who married Jan Pietersz. Pauw and of Machtelt Pieters du Bien who married Cornelis Jansz. Queeckel (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 84). On 1 November 1597, Jan Pietersz. du Bien, merchant in Amsterdam, declared that he had signed a contract on 29 July of the same year with skipper Jan IJsbrantssen van Uutgeest to send a ship to St. Uvis to load salt (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 105). On 2 May 1600, Jan Jorisz., inhabitant of De Geest, declared that he had bought half of a domain with 19 1/2 morgen of land on 21 February 1598 from Jan Pietersz. du Bijen, as appointed curator of the goods of the children of Jan Oliviersz., inherited from Adriana de Leest, their grandmother (RA Monster 21 # 3735 fol. 24 f. Kindly communicated by Gerard van Eendenburg). On 21 July 1601, Jan Pietersz. du Bien, widower of Geertje Reijniers, was betrothed to Elisabeth Lubberts van der Wel, living in Utrecht (DTB 762a/151). On 7 May 1609, Jan Pietersz. du Bien acquired a house named de Zon on the Herengracht. He built two grachtenhuisen on the lot (today's no. 109 and 111) and inhabited the one on the North side (no. 109). Du Bien's widow offered the houses for sale at auction in 1629 but they were not sold until 1 May 1631 when they were bought by Symon Jacobsz. Schoonhoven (of R 29366) (I. van Eeghen, De huizen van de susters Stockmans Maandblad Amstelodamum 58(1971), pp. 58-9). Jan Pietersz. du Bien was buried in the N.K., coming from the Herengracht, on 15 February 1628 (DTB 1054/38). After his death, Elisabeth remarried with Adriaen Jacobsz. van Nooordt (of R 20404) (betrothal on 14 February 1631). On 13 February 1637, the merchant Andries de Baijsser, 49, declared at the request of the widow of Jan Pietersz. du Bien, married (now) to Ariaen Jacobsz., that he had lived from 1630 to 1631 on the Heeregracht in a house called Hamburg, near the Heerestraet, belonging to the widow of Jan Pietersz. du Bien. He rented the house and its cellar for 680 f. a year (NA 479 B, film 6479). When Andries de Beijsser was insinuated on 30 November 1630, along with a number of other merchants, he was indeed said to be living on the Heregracht (NA 910, Not. Eyloff).

BuyerWillem Sweerts
Buyer FamilySweerts (Sweers), Willem (Lenaertsz. ?)
Buyer NotesThere are at least four several related individuals, all relatives of Jacques Rombouts of the present inventory, named Willem or Guilliam Sweers who are difficult to tell apart. The genealogy of the family may begin with Lenart Sweers I who was noted in Amsterdam as early as 1584. It was probably around that date that Lenart Sweers I married Anne Rombouts, the sister of Hans Rombouts and of Jacques Rombouts of the present inventory, and the aunt of Hans van Solt II. After the death of Anne Rombouts, Lenart Sweers I remarried with Susanne Crayborn in 1593. On 25 March 1606, Willem (Lenertsz.?) Sweers, from Antwerp, 26, having lived 3 years in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his uncle Willem Robarts, was betrothed to Janneken du Pire, assisted by her father Jan de Pire and her mother Tanneken Godesen (DTB 411/702). On 21 October 1607, the couple had their daughter Catharina baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Willem's cousin Hans van Solt (II?) and Marije Rombouts, another sister of Hans Rombouts (DTB 3/217). In one document of 1 February 1636, Willem (Willemsz.?) Sweers and Dirck van Wisselt (of R 20620) drew up a procuration in the name of Guillielmo Sweers (II, see below?) to represent all three as administrators of the estate of Hans Rombouts (of INVNO 200) in a suit against Filips Rombouts, living in France (NA 597, fol. 242-3, Not. Lamberti). According to De Navorscher (84(1935), p. 38), Willem Lenertsz. Sweers died on 18 July 1629. This then would be the Guglielmo Sweerts, said to be the cousin of Hans van Solt II. It is possible, therefore, that it was the son of Willem Lenertsz., Willem Willemsz., who issued the procuration of February 1636. Janneken du Pire died on 17 June 1621 (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 36). On 1 February 1629, Willem (Lenertsz.) Sweers assisted his daughter Catharina on the occasion of her betrothal to Paulus Fockenburg (also van Focquenbroch) of R 26234. As we saw, Willem Lenaertsz. died soon afterwards (on 18 July 1629). The widow of Guillielmo Swiers (I) (Willem Lenertsz.?) paid a tax of 45 f., living on the Oude Schans (Kohier, fol. 125, p. 30). Marije Rombouts, cited above, the sister of Jacques Rombouts, married Hans Sweerts, who may have been the brother of Manuel and Leenert. Lenard Sweerts II (de jonge) was apparently the brother of Willem Leenertsz. Sweers (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 224). Willem (Willemsz.) Sweers who drew up the procuration of 1636 is likely to be identical with the individual of that name who, with Sara du Pire, the grandmother of the bride-to-be and the widow of Jean Wallis (of R 27576), assisted Anna du Pire, 18, when she was betrothed to the painter Bartholomeus van der Helst on 16 April 1636 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 336). In June 1637, Willem (Lenaertz. ?) Sweers, the guardian of Catharina, Philips (27 in 1637), Abraham (25), and Anthoni (19) Sweers, who were apparently all children of Willem Lenertsz. Sweers, had been replaced, in consequence of his death, by Adriaen van der Heede (married to Stijntge Gerrits Westerhoff) and Paulus Fockenburgh (of R 23761) as guardians of these orphan children (NA 138, film 1174, Not. Benedict Baddel). Philips van der Heede, the son of Adriaen van der Heeden and of Stijntgen Gerrits Westerhoff, held a high post in the W.I.C. He died of a tropical disease in Elmina in early 1669 (Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 27,1(1971), p.23.) He was the cousin of the poet Willem Godschalk van Focquenbroch, the son of Catharina Sweers and of Paulus van Fockenbroeck de jonge. Guilliam Sweers II, 29 years old in an act of 4 August 1635, may have been an embroiderer (NA 695A, film 4981).

BuyerMarten van den Berg
Buyer FamilyBerg, Marten van den
Buyer NotesMarten van Berg (or Bergen) was a merchant born in Antwerp, who was first noted in Amsterdam in 1602 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 295). According to Gelderblom, he was born in 1580 and became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1605 (Prosopographic Data Base). In 1608, Marten van Bergen, along with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16).

BuyerBarent Noorman
Buyer FamilyNoorman, Barent
Buyer NotesBarent Jansz. Noorman, 28 years old, living in the Houttuynen, assisted by his mother Machtelt Pieters, was betrothed to Geertie Muilkens, 24, living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal, assisted by her mother Aeltgen Wouters, on 20 November 1599 (DTB 665/91). He was allotted one of the four shares in the estate of Hans Muijlken, the father of his wife Geertie (or Gerritie) (NA 4, fol. 40, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). Geertie Muiljkens was the sister of Anna Muijlkens, married to Willem Mourisz. Smith (of R 20504) and of Maria Muijlkens, married to Dirck Claesz. Schepel (of R 30126). Barent Jansz. Noorman paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Breestraet (Kohier, fol. 228, p. 52). He seems to have been the son of Jan Noorman who paid a tax of 12 f. in 1585, and a brother of Jan Jansz. Noorman, lumber dealer (houtkoper), who set up a company to build mills for sawing wood in 1630 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 88 and Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 717). He was the uncle of Wessel Noorman of R 20751. Barent Jansz. Noorman, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted 7 ships between 1601 and 1608, at times in partnership with Dirck Strijker, Jan Cornelissen, and Pieter Evertsen (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p.601.) His name seems to have been misspelled Barent Jansen Moreman in a freighting contract of 1607 (ibid. p. 353). On 30 December 1636, Barent Noorman declared that he had left Aeltje Jacobs, the daughter of his sister, 800 f. that would be paid from the liquid assets that would be left after his death (NA 315, film 6379. Not. F. van Banchem). Barent Noorman was buried in the N.K. on 20 September 1638 (DTB 1054/118).

BuyerCoenraet de Wilde [crossed out: Sebalt]
Buyer FamilyWilde, Coenraet (de oude ?) (Martensz.) (I ?)
Buyer NotesIn 1608, Coenradt de Wilde de oude (I) assisted his son Coenradt de Wilde de jonge (II) upon his betrothal to Anneken Willems. Coenrad de Wilde II, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was a cloth merchant (DTB 413/97). On Coenradt de Wilde II see R 30057. On 11 July 1625, an orphan chamber obligation with the face value of 4000 f. was brought to the Orphan Chamber that had been issued by Coenraed de Wilde Martensz., who is almost certainly identical with Coenraet de Wilde I (WK 5073/789). Two days later, Coenradt de Wilde Martensz., married to Marie du Pire, as heir of Jan du Pire and Anna Gommers, bought a house on the Warmoesstraet (no. 77), for which Pauwels van Fockenburgh (II) was the surety in 1637 (J.G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968, p. 35/12). On Jan and Marie de Pire and Anna Gommers, see R 27576. On 19 September 1630, Coenradt de Wilde Martensz., citizen of Amsterdam, declared that he had transferred certain goods, including paintings, to Jacob Rombouts (probably of R 19454) on 14 February 1629, as security for a debt of 1787 f. 12 st. that he owed to Rombouts (to whom he may have been related). There were 15 paintings, all unattributed, several with Old Testament subjects (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). None of these paintings can be identified with lots that Coenradt de Wilde I had bought at auction.

On 10 January 1608, Coenrad de Wilde de jonge, from Antwerp, 25 years old, assisted by his father Coenrad de Wilde (I), living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Anneken Willems, assisted by her father Hans Willemsz. and her mother Lynsjen Roy Rensel (?) (DTB 413/97). On 6 November 1608, Koenrat de Wilde (de jonge) and Anne Willems had their son Joannis baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hans Willemsz., Anne Herberts, and Elisabeth van de Sande (DTB 4/261). On Hans Willemsz. (van Elbinck), the father of Femmida Elbinck, who married Johan Smissart, see R 416 of Montias1. Koenrad and Anna de Wilde had a daughter baptized on 17 November 1613 in the presence of Anna Rombouts (DTB 29/335). Anna (Jans) de Wilde is not identical with the wife of Jacques Rombouts who was also named Anna de Wilde. However, the two are probably related (as the presence of Anna Rombouts at the baptism of 1613 testifies). When Coenradt de Wilde II remarried with Ursela de Cordeson (or Cordes) on 17 November 1620 (betrothal), he was said to be the widower of Anna Jans (DTB 425/136). When a child of Konraet de Wylde (II) was buried on 1 March 1627, the father was said to be living on the St. Anna straet (DTB 1044/133). Coenraed de Wilde de jonge is probably identical with the cloth merchant named Coenraed de Wilde who, together with Abram de Marees de oude, bought 8 bales of Moscow silk, according to a deposition of 9 July 1625 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 576-7). On 27 November 1625, Isabella Gommers, spinster, 32, declared at the request of Coenradt de Wilde de jonge that, three weeks previously, she had met the maid of the petitioner near the Dam (NA 256, fol. 266). In the inventory of Mathijs Jansz., laeckencoper, dated 23 December 1631, Koenraat d'Wilde (II ?), living in the Koestraet, was said to owe the estate 180 f. for cloth purchased (NA 713, film 5147, fol. 458 and foll.) Coenradt de Wilde II died before 1 January 1638, when his widow Ursula de Cordis, as guardian of her children under benefit of inventory (which implies that there was serious doubt whether the assets of her husband's estate exceeded the liabilities), named Franchoijs Vinson, broker (of R 25311) to sell a house on the O.Z. Vooburchwal, where Louwys del Beecke (cited in R 29027) was presently living, to the highest bidder. She said she would rescind the arrest she had placed on the house (NA 867, fol. 1). On 9 November 1639, Mattheus Nonnemans declared at the request of Ursula Cordes, widow of Coenraed de Wilde, living in Gouda, that Maria de Carpentier, widow of Aert Boudewijns, at the time of her death, in 1613, was engaged in the occupation of cloth dealer and that her heirs continued to do so until 1618. Nonnemans had lived in the house of Marie Carpentier for three years (NA 1276, act 13, Not. Pieter Barcman). Aert Boudewijns, originally from 's Hertogenbosch, is known to have been associated with merchants trading with Moscow in the 1590s, including Isaack le Maire (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640 p. 223.)

BuyerLaurens de Groote
Buyer FamilyGroote (Groot), Laurens de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, originally from Antwerp, was living in Middelburg in 1594, together with his brother Jacques de Groote. On 28 December 1596, Laurens de Groote, 33 years old, living in Middelburg, assisted by his neef Pieter van de Pulle, was betrothed in Amsterdam to Johanna le Maire, 20, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by her mother Susanna le Maire, her stepfather Jacques van de Wille, and her uncle Isaac le Maire (DTB 408/50). Isaack le Maire was the famous merchant and traveler who went bankrupt around 1610. In 1606, when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery, Laurens de Groot was living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal in de Camper Tooren (GAA, 43/20 F 346). He invested 9000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. He had an account of 2 folios at the Wisselbank in 1611, 1612, and 1620, and 3 folios in 1615 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 177). In 1608, together with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, he signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam asking for the revocation of the prohibition of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). He paid a tax of 275 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Herengracht (Kohier, fol. 84vo., p. 20). He went bankrupt in 1641 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 116). He was buried in the W.K. on 9 February 1644 (DTB 1046/3vo).

BuyerJan van Bossu sydeverwer op de Cingel
Buyer FamilyBossu, Jan van
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a silk dyer on the Cingel. Note that Jacques Rombouts lived in the Verweryen and was probably a cloth dyer. On (?) February 1620, an inventory of Jan Bossu's possessions was taken at his request. It contained a number of unassessed paintings, including two of Judith (Not. Palm Mathijs, film 4837). An individual named Jan van Bossij, who may be identical with Jan van Bossu, and his wife Maijke Willebeex had their son baptized in the O.K. on 7 October 1607 (DTB 4/216).
