BuyerJacob Schaep
Buyer FamilySchaep, Jacob
Buyer NotesOn 23 January 1580, Jacob Pietersz. Schaep, assisted by his mother Griet Berchem, and his uncle Gerrit Jacobsz. Schaep, was betrothed to Aachtje Meurling, assisted by her parents Jan Meurling and Emmetgen Hendrix (DTB 401/106). On 21 October 1602, Jacob Schaep, 46 years of age, appeared in a deposition with Jan Stuver (who bought the following lot, R 30120) and Jacob Jansz. Reyms (GAA, NA 20 G). In the Haarlem lottery of 1606, Pieter Schaep, living behind (the house of) his father Jacob Schaep, de drie Schaepgens, bought lots for 5 f. 8 st. The maid of Jacob Pietersz. (Schaep) bought for 1 f. 16 st. (GAA, 90/45 F 680 and 90/50 F 681). Jacob Pietersz. Schaep was schout in 1583 and kerckmeester of the O.K. in 1581. In 1608, Jacob Schaep, together with a number of other Amsterdam merchants, signed a petition requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers in effecting money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 16). He died on 18 January 1627 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 66). Jacob Schaep ende erven paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631, living on the East side of the Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 146 vo., p. 34). Gerrit Jacobsz. Schaep, who assisted his nephew Jacob Schaep on the occasion of his betrothal in 1580, lived from 1532 to 1582. He was married to Catryn Symons Sakemadr. who died in 1606 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.65). Jacob's son Pieter Schaep II was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis in 1629 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 300). On 9 September 1637, Pieter Schaep II and Cornelis Roos of R 31021(?), retail merchant in ironware (Noremburger), hired Frans Bergvelt, son of Adolf Bergvelt, to work in their shop to serve Cornelis Roos for 5 years. Schaep would have to mind the shop. He would be paid 100 f. a year (NA 1420, film 1388).

BuyerJan Stuver
Buyer FamilyStuver (Stuyver), Jan
Buyer NotesThe buyer was born in Haarlem in 1572, the son of Gerrit Hendricksz. Stuyver alias Gerrit Deijman, heer van Ravensbergen, etc.. and Erm Dircxdr. (Opmeer). After the death of his father Gerrit Stuijver and of Magdaleena Gerrits, an inventory was taken of their rich estate. Jan Stuver inherited one of the five lots, each of which included parcels of land (NA 12, fol. 63, Not. Sal. Henrix, Extracten). Jan Stuver was a merchant in Amsterdam. He was buried in the N.K. on 22 February 1617 (with the ringing of the bells, qua R.C.) He became heer van 'S-Gravenambacht in 1605 and was a pilgrim to Jerusalem before 1609. He lived on the Singel near the Raambrug. He married Baerte den Otter on 17 December 1592. Baerte was the sister of Claes Florisz. den Otter (of R 28642) and of Hillebrant Florisz. den Otter (of R 28004). She was born on 22 April 1570 and was buried in the N.K. on 13 November 1621 (also with the ringing of the bells) (information supplied by S.A.C. Dudok van Heel). On 21 October 1602, Jan Stuver, koopman, 30 years of age, appeared in a deposition with Jacob Schaep, 46 (of R 30119), and Jan Jansz. Reyms, 35 (GAA, NA 20 G). It is remarkable that Jan Stuver and Jacob Schaep bought successive lots. In 1631, de kind van Jan Stuijver, living op 't Kerckhoff, paid a tax of 40 f. (Kohier, fol. 286, p. 65). Magdalena Stuijvers, the wife of Otto de Hart (of R 36384), may have been the daughter of Gerrit Stuijver and the sister of Jan Stuijver.

BuyerDirck Claesz. Sippel
Buyer FamilySippel (Schepel ?), Dirck Claesz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Dirck Claesz. Schepel, son of Geertgen Hendricks Rooclaes and Claes Dircksz., dealer in grain in 't vergulden Schepel, who paid a tax of 36 f. in 1585 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 143). The family was R.C. On 18 March 1595, Claes Dircxz. in 't Schepel and Giertgen Henricxdr., living on the Oude Singel, outside the Haarlemmerpoort, passed their testament before notary Pylorius. Their universal heirs were her sons Dirck Claesz. and Henrick Claesz. (NA 3, fol/ 184vo, Extracten). Jochem Dircksz., the late owner of the goods in this sale, may have been the brother of Claes Dircxz. and the uncle of Dirck Claesz. Schepel. On 26 October 1591, Dirck Claesz. Schepel and Heninger Muylkens were insinuated for failure to abide by the terms of a freighting contract (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 178(1981), pp. 322-3). On 10 May 1605, an agreement was reached concerning the division of the estate of Hans Muijlken, widower of Ael Woutersdr. Hans Muijlken(s) was a merchant in Amsterdam who was one of the co-freighters of a ship laden with salt from Portugal in July 1595 (Winkelman, op. cit. p. 46). He was certainly related to Heninger Muylkens cited above and to Schepel's wife Maria Muylkens. Hans Muijlkens's estate was divided into four parts by lot. Part 2 was to be inherited by Dirck Claesz. Schepel, as husband of Maria Muijlkens, who would get two houses on the Salamandersteeg. Part 4 would be allotted to Barent Jansz. Noorman of R 30045 (NA 4, fol. 40, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). This Hans Muijlken(s) seems to be distinct from a man of the same name, perhaps his son, whose inventory was taken on 12 May 1623 (NA 255, Not. J. Meerhout). On 27 April 1606, Jan Pietersz. du Bien of R 30035 and Dirck Claesz. Schepel accepted the guardianship of Laurens Claesz. Kan (the brother of Dirck Claesz. Kan of R 31182) (WK 5073/513, fol. 125vo.) Laurens Claesz. Kan died before 10 December 1611 when the goods in his inventory were assessed (WK 5073/944). Dirck Claesz. was also a grain dealer. He freighted 12 ships between 1602 and 1626. On 14 February 1619, Dirck Claesz. Schepel, 50, and Nicolas Floressen, 44, merchants, made a deposition at the request of Hillebrant den Otter (of R 28004) concerning a certain Willem Doeck in Dantzig who was said to be insolvent and owed money to Den Otter (NA 200, film 111). In 1627, he joined 26 other aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor) in a petition concerning the collection of a levy, amounting to one schepel (about 30 liters) per mui (about 3250 liters) on grain to benefit the poor (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). Dirck Claesz. Schepel was custodian (bezorger) of the R.C. Oude-armen Kantoor. Dirck Scheepels, living op 't Water in de Vergulde Druijff, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (137/76 F995). Schepel's daughter named Diewertgen Dircks Schepel, living on the Oude Singel in de Vergulde Schepel, also bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 137). It may be Diewertgen Dircks who was married to Hans Dircksz. Can, the son of Dirck Claesz. Can of R 31182. Dirck Schepel paid a tax of 250 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the North side of the Meulenstraet (Kohier, fol. 57vo., p. 14). On 3 April 1634, Otto de Harde (Hart), of R 36384, made a deposition at the request of Jan Oom Claesz. on behalf of the latter's son Ellert Ooms. Geertruijt Schepels, another daughter of Dirck Claesz. Schepel, had apparently alleged that Ellert had broken his promise to marry her (he had given her a handkerchief in token of his intentions). In the mean time she had become pregnant and borne a child (NA 863, Not. Van Zwieten). Ellert Ooms signed the 1645 petition to the Vroedschap calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 90). On 29 April 1636, D. Claesz. Schepel, Hans Willemsz. Elbinck (of INVNO 516) and four other grain dealers signed a petition supporting two brokers in the grain trade (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), p. 116). Ellert Ooms signed the February 1645 petition calling for the strict enforcement of the currency regulations of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 90). Hendrick Claesz. Schepel, who is cited in many freighting contracts in the 1590s, was presumably the brother of Dirck Claesz. Schepel (e.g. Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 178(1981), pp. 38-39). Hendrick Claesz. Schepel was betrothed to Hermantje Everts on 13 February 1593 (DTB 664/72).
