Buyer | Matheus de Vos swager van Tanneken |
Buyer Family | Vos, Matheus de |
Buyer Notes | On 18 June 1621, Marten de Vos, vettevarier (dealer in fats), brought 600 f. to the Orphan Chamber for his children, the oldest of whom was Matheus, 10 years old, whose late mother was Judith van Vyven (WK 5073/789, fol. 177vo.) On 22 July 1626, the post-mortem inventory of the goods of Marten de Vos was taken. Among the books in the inventory: Institutiones Calvini (NA 713, film 5147, Not. Pieter Carels). On 7 October 1634, Mattheus de Vos, from Amsterdam, 24 years old, living in the Calverstraet, wine distributor (wijnverlater), no living parents, assisted by his uncle and guardian Ariaen Carman (I), was betrothed to Annetje Pieters, from Amsterdam, 19, assisted by her mother Anneken Carremans (DTB 443/82). On 20 September 1635, Matheus de Vos and Anneken Pieters had their son Marten baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Aeryan Karreman (probably I) and Tanneken Carremans (probably the sister-in-law referred to in connection with the buyer's name) (DTB 7/57). Ariaen Carman I, the uncle of Mattheus de Vos, should be distinguished from Adriaen Carman II, who was 17 years old when he was apprenticed to the painter Isaack Isaacksz. (son of Pieter Isaacksz. of INVNO 623) for two years. He was said to the be son of the wife (by a previous marriage) of Carel van Houten. Adriaen was to learn painting, grinding colors, and pluijmeren (panel making). The master would feed him. He would be able to paint one painting on panel for himself (NA 372, fol. 22, cited in Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 1481-2). Isack Isacsen, painter, was said to be 48 years old on 5 January 1647 when he testified that he had seen in the house of Samuel van Pitsen on the Lauriersgracht, at the sign of the Fox, in the great Sael a large painting of Ganemedes, painted by Frans Badens, and one of a large white cow, painted by Henricus Goltius. The witness says he knows this because he is a next-door neighbor of Van Pitsen and he has often visited the great Sael (Bredius, Künstler-inventare. p. 1483). The painter Isaack Isaacksz. was said to be a spy in the Dutch Republic for the King of Denmark. |
