Buyer NotesOn the buyer, see R 30652. N. de Roever suggested that this lot might be identical with een stucxken van Coninxloo, principael, van Venus ende Adonis in Conincxloo's death inventory of 19 January 1607 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 43). The identification is plausible.

BuyerPieter Bol achter 't Princenhoff
Buyer FamilyBol, Pieter (II)
Buyer NotesThere is some doubt about the identification of the buyer of this lot. The painter Pieter Bol (I) was said to be the son of the painter Jacob Bol I, from Mechelen, who became a citizen of Amsterdam on 4 November 1591. Pieter Bol I was buried on 20 September 1602. If this information is correct, Katelijn, the daughter of Pieter Bol, painter, and of Katelijn van Roijen, who was baptized on 25 May 1603 was a posthumous child. Judit Maronnier was a witness to this baptism (DTB 4/67). But then this Pieter Bol could not be the buyer of this lot, dated 5 March 1607. He may, instead, have been the son of the painter Hans Bol(1534-1593). A son of Pieter Bol (II), who may be our buyer, was buried on 22 August 1607 (DTB 1053/74). Judith Maronnier was the wife of Jacques Bol, the brother of Pieter Bol I. On 18 August 1605, they had their daughter Maritjen baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lijsbet Maronnier (DTB 4/136). Judith died shortly before 13 November 1626, when Samuel Maronnier and Jan Gillisz., sworn maeckelaer, were named guardians over the goods to which her children were entitled by inheritance. The same guardians on the same date were appointed to administer the goods of the four children left by Isaack Bols, who was also a painter. Their mother Martha Wouters was still alive. Isaack was a brother of Pieter I and Jacques Bol (WK 5073/513, fol. 49 and WK 5073/789 of 26 July 1628). Samuel Maronier, living in Out Antwerpen, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (51/86 F 400).

BuyerGuill[iam] Basse
ProvenanceSee NOTES below.
Buyer FamilyBasse, Guilliam (Willem)
Buyer NotesOn 2 August 1597, Guillam Bassee (Bassen), silk dyer, from Rijssel (Lille), 28, living in the Verwerijen in the Nieustadt, was betrothed to Jenne Arondeau, from Valenciennes, 25, assisted by Oliver Arondeau and Maria Flanquet, her parents (DTB 408/208). He was the son of the painter Jan Basse I and the brother of the painter Jan Basse II (of INVNO 832). In 1606, Guillame Basse, dyer, living on the Amstel in de vergulde Lellie, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery. His entry read Rien sans dieu (GAA 131/35 F 828). He witnessed the marriage contract of his sister Sara Basse with the painter Jacques de Ville on 28 February 1613, also in the presence of his brother Jean Basse. On 10 March 1627, Pieter Varlet (on whom, see R 32347 and 22043), Harman Willemsz., Hans Pietersz. (of R 29891), and Guillame Basse, all dyers and sworn headmen of the dyers' guild, made a deposition regarding the poor quality of some silk passement or cord that had been submitted to them for evaluation by the magistrates of Arnhem to ascertain its quality (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 623). On 10 January 1639, Guiljam Basse, silk dyer, 69, declared that in 1606 the house next to the Rouen Poort that he had bought from Paulus Buys, merchant (I), had been bought from him from Jan Londerseel. There was a dispute on the exact measurements of the court (erv) (NA 921, Not. Barent Jansz. Verbeeck). Jan (or Hans) van Londerseel was an engraver, originally from Antwerp. N. de Roever suggested that this lot might be identical with een stucxken van Joris van Cleef in the death inventory of Gillis van Coninxloo (een stuxken van Joris van Cleef) (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 43.) There was some confusion in the early 17th century as to the true identity of Sotte Cleef, who was often thought to be Joost (or Joris) van Cleve but is now believed to be Cornelis van Cleve. Gulliam Basse was buried on 20 March 1652, coming from the NZ Achterburchwal (DTB 1003/106).

BuyerCornelis Ariansz. Roos
Buyer FamilyRoos, Cornelis Ariansz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably the son of Adriaen Cornelisz. Roos, wine dealer in Amsterdam, to whom the painter Steven de Geyn acknowledged a debt for rent of his house on the Houtstraet on 3 September 1610. The widow of Adriaen Cornelisz. (Trijn Claes) sued Steven (de) Geyn for the money in 1616 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 69 and 71 of the Nachträge). On 25 October 1615, Claes Ariaensz. Roos, wine dealer, the brother of Cornelis Ariaensz., and Klaertje Jans (Hortensius) had their daughter Lysbeth baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lisbet van Bronckhorst and Judith Aryaens (DTB 5/161). Judith Ariaens (Roos) was the sister of Cornelis Ariaensz. She married the Amsterdam wine dealer Juriaen Huybrechtsz. (van Eijl) of INVNO 231. On 2 November 1627, Machtelentje Brouwers, assisted by her present husband and guardian, presented to the Orphan Chamber her two children, Herman, 20, and Jan, 11, whose father was Jan Jacobsz. Bal, notary (WK 5073/789). On 1 January 1630, Machteltje Brouwers, wife of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos, was said to be one of the heirs of her father Jan Brouwer (WK 5073/789). On 20 January 1633, Juffr. Maerteltgen Brouwers, widow of Jan (Jacobsz.) Balli (or Bal),, now wife of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos, living in Alkmaar, named Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel (of R 27584) to represent her in the sale of a house on the Keisersgracht to Willem van Slotingh (NA 991, fol.3, Not. J. Bosch). The latter may be identical with Willem (van) Slotingh, a rich Delft merchant, who, together with Pieter van Vliet, sold the house Mechelen to Vermeer's father Reynier Jansz. on 23 April 1641 (Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, p. 291). Adriaen Cornelisz. Roos died before 28 August 1636 at which time his widow was said to be still alive and living in Alkmaar. Outger Pietersz. Spiegel (of R 27584), who was married to Ariaen Cornelisz.'s sister Geertge Adriaens Roos, and Juriaen Huybertsz., both wine dealers, declared in this deposition that an accord had been passed between the producent (the widow in Alkmaar) and Machtelt Brouwers by which it was expressly stipulated that the paintings which had been collected (ingebracht) by Cornelis Ariaensz. Roos, after the death of Machtelt Brouwers, would revert to the petitioner or her heirs, to which end the paintings should be inventarized by the Notary under the supervision of Outger Pietersz. Spiegel. The latter alone declared that the accord also stipulated that Machtelt Brouwers would not be permitted to deliver (uit te leveren) the paintings or to let them be copied. The act was passed to enable the widow of Adriaen Cornelisz. to use as she might see fit (NA 642, film 4953, Not. Sybrant Cornelissen). Outgert Pietersz. and Jeuriaen Huybrechtsz., were both brothers-in-law of Cornelis Adriaensz. Outgert Pietersz. (of R 27584) married his sister Geertge in 1599; Jeuriaen Huybrechtsz., born in 1592, was betrothed to Judith Adriaens (signs Roos), cited above, assisted by her mother Trijn Claes, on 10 February 1618 (DTB 422/170). On 2 November 1627, Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos appeared before the Orphan Chamber as Machtelt Brouwer's guardian over the two children she had procreated with her first husband, the notary Jan Jacobsz. Bal, who were entitled to receive 4000 f as their share of the inheritance (WK 5073/789). Earlier, on 20 May 1624, Cornelis Adriaen Roos had appeared in the Orphan Chamber as guardian of still another sister, Volckge Adriaen Roosdr., widow of Cornelis Webben, living in Alkmaar, whose children had been procreated by her earlier husband Cornelis Hendricksz. Roos, and had assisted her in the sale of the house de Witte Roos in the Warmoesstraat to Daniel Verlet (Varlet) (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 36/27). When Cornelis Heinricx Roos and Volkjen Aerjaens had their son Claes baptized in the O.K. on 12 October 1614, Klaes Aeriaensz. Roos and Duyfjen Klaes witnessed the ceremony (DTB 5/120). On Claes Adriaensz. Roos, who was also a wine dealer, also cited above, see Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 508. Claes Adriaensz. was betrothed to Clara Hortensius on 17 December 1611. After his death, his widow remarried with Frederick Tjerx, widower of Aefje Wibbes (DTB 436/64). His daughter Maria Roos was betrothed in Leeuwarden on 19 May 1633 to Pieter Buttinga of INVNO 390 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 23(1969), p. 105). Jacob Cornelisz. Roos, who was probably the son of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos, was married to Pietertje Willems. Their portrait appears in the 1669 inventory of Engeltje Reijniers, widow of Coenradt van Coblens (R 8104). Pietertge Willems was the daughter of Willem Jansz. den Uijl and thus the niece of the painter Jan Jansz. den Uijl (as appears in a deposition by Pietertge, widow of Jacob Cornelisz. Roos, dated 12 December 1635 in NA 562, film 832). Jan Jansz. den Uijl himself was said to be 40 and a painter when he appeared in a deposition dated on or about 16 August 1636 (text faded out) (NA 995, fol. 401, film 1225). Finally, Jan Adriaensz. Roos, who was also probably the brother of Cornelis Adriaensz., married Jannetje van Stompwijck (of R 35935), widow, first, of Zacharias Claesz. (of INVNO 846), and, second, of Pieter Tasman.

Buyer FamilySmals, Jochum
Buyer NotesJochum Smals de jonge, living in the Breestraet, bought lots for 3 f. 12 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 125/4 F 914). The collector was Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge, the son of Jan Jansz. Carel de oude of R 28890. On 23 March 1611, an inventory was taken of Jochum Smals's possessions including many paintings (unassessed). At least one painting, a Baptism of (St.) John appears identical with a painting Smals bought at the present sale (R 31196 of Montias2) (NA 456, film 126, Not. Meerhout).

BuyerGillis Kint by Sr. Hellemans
Buyer FamilyKint, Gillis
Buyer NotesThe buyer has not been identified. Sr. Hellemans is likely to be Carel Hellemans who was a witness at the baptism of a child of Adriaen van Nieulandt in 1614 (R 20925). Carlo Hellemans or Helman was a wealthy merchant based in Venice who was well known for his love of music. He was a friend of the Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrielli (1585-1612). When he married Cornelias Pieters, he obtained a large sum of money, jewels, and silver (including a lampet by Paulus van Vianen) from his bride (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 7(1993), p.257). He was the uncle of Leonora Hellemans (Hamburg 1595-Amsterdam 1661) who was married, first, to Jan Batista Bartolotti and, second, to Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, the famous poet and historian. The Hellemans house was known for its music-making (J.H. Giskes, Venetiaanse muziek in zeventiende-eeuws Amsterdam in Amsterdam: Venetie van het Noorden, 1991, pp. 178-9).

BuyerWynant Gerritsz. voors.
Buyer FamilyGerritsz., Wynant
Buyer NotesN. de Roever suspected that the name of the buyer was an error for Wynant Govertsz. for whom Pieter Pietersz. II (Jonge Lange Pier) made a deposition a few years later (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 46). This was, however, little better than a guess. My own guess is that Wynant Gerritsz. was the father of Gerrit Wynantsz., the brother-in-law of Pieter Coningh, of R 20534.

BuyerAppelman Stockes swager
Buyer FamilyAppelman (brother-in-law of Stock) (Sijbrant?)
Buyer NotesThe identification of the buyer is especially difficult. He cannot be Sijbrant Appelman de oude who died in 1602 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 70) nor his son of the same name who was baptized in that same year (DTB 38/965). However, it should be noted that when Sijbrant Appelman (II?) paid a tax of 90 f. (living in the Berchstraet), he lived next door to (or possibly in the same house as) the heirs of Sieuwert Stock)(Kohier, fol. 63 and fol. 63vo, p. 15). The buyer may also be Sijbrant's brother, Simon Appelman, born in 1630, Simon Balthasarsz. Appelman, who was buried on 22 November 1630. Simon Balthasarsz. may have been one of Stock's brother-in-laws. On 26 February 1619, the Orphan Chamber appointed the eersame Jan Gysbertsz., presently alderman of the city of Amsterdam, together with Symon Appelman, as the guardian over the children of Sijbrand Appelman (I) (WK 5073/513, fol. 173vo.) Simon Appelman married Annetge Claes Trebijn, the daughter of Claes Trebijn and Niesge Sijbrands Appelman, in April 1600 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 70). Sijmon Appelman (or his heirs), together with his brother-in-law (Stock ?), paid a tax of 75 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Breestraet (Kohier, fol. 227vo, p. 52). His death inventory was taken on 13 April 1631 (INVNO 1135). He had two married daughers: Niesge Appelman, who married Jacob Bruyningh, and Anna Appelman, who married Dirck Groot, then Adriaen Broekman, and finally, on 3 August 1667, Simon Tedingh van Berckhout (Elias, op. cit., p.70). According to N. de Roever (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p.46), the buyer was the painter Gerrit Appelman, the swager of Hendrick Stock, but the evidence for this is not clear. Gerrit Appelman paid a tax of 100 f. (much superior to what would be expected of a painter) in 1631, at which time he lived on the Cingel (Kohier, fol. 13, p. 4). Little is known about this Gerrit Appelman beyond the tax he paid and the burial of a child in the N.K. on 1 November 1608. 1 f. 9 st. were paid to the Church (DTB 1053/91). On a buyer named Hendrick Stock, who may or may not be the same person, see R 21265.

BuyerJan Jansz. glaseschryver
Buyer FamilyJansz., Jan (glaseschryver) (Fonteijn)
Buyer NotesJan Jansz. Fonteijn, glass engraver, was born in 1580 and was buried on 15 August 1620 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 154). In 1606, Jan Jansz. glass engraver, living in the Pylstraet, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 22/78 F160). In 1613, he lived in the Kalverstraet and died on the Keysersgracht in de Roode Fonteijn (whence his name). He married Neeltge Cornelis Croon, widow of Jan Jacobsz. Lons, on 27 January 1613 (Elias, ibid.) On 19 February 1615, Jan Jansz., glaesschrijver, 36 years old (an age that is consistent with the birth year of Jan Jansz. Fonteijn cited above), declared at the request of Abraham Seeuwens (probably of R 29592) that the colors that used to bake glass, which he had seen at [in the mill of] Seeuwens usually sell for 3 gulden a pound and that he has bought some at that price for Jan Jansz. van der Wiel (Extracten, under Abraham Seeuwens). The inventory of Jan Jansz. glassmaker, dated 15 February 1622, may be that of Neeltge Croonen's second husband (NA 562A, Not. Westfrisius). Neeltge Croon remarried on 8 March 1622 with Hendrick Anthonisz. de Vries, born in The Hague, glassmaker on the Keizersgracht (Elias, ibid.) On 11 September 1635, Joost Brest (of INVNO 1193), 57, and Nicolaes van Stracht, 44, made a deposition at the request of Neeltge Croonen. The previous Sunday they had been at her house and stood before the bed of her husband Hendrick Anthonisz. who had apparently confessed to procreating a child in a moment of drunkenness (NA 772, Not. Verhey). Neeltge Croon died on 9 January 1653. It is curious that the introduction to the inventory taken after her death stated that she was the widow of Jan Jansz. (Denta?), glass engraver, but made no mention of Hendrick Anthonisz. de Vries (INVNO 553).

BuyerPieter Segers naest 't groot school
Buyer FamilySegers, Pieter
Buyer NotesThe buyer cannot be identical with the former bode of the Orphan Chamber who was removed as a fervent Roman Catholic in 1577 since this individual, the father of Pieter Lastman, died of the plague in 1603 (S.A.C. Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek Amstelodamum, vol. 77, p. 39.) Pieter Segersz. organized a sale at the Orphan Chamber (with Govert Govertsz. and Chrispiaen (Colijn)) on 5 March 1607 (INVNO 754). In the debts due to the estate of Gillis van Coninxloo, Pieter Segers was recorded as owing 16 f. 9 st. on account van syn soons leren. His son was thus presumably an apprentice-painter (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 44). This apprentice painter is likely to be Hercules Segers (of R 30470) (J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 383). Hercules's father Pieter Segers, linnen merchant, was born in Gent. He was said to be a friend of Gillis van Conincxloo. He died in January 1612 (ibid.) Pieter Segersz., living in de fortuyn bought lots for 1 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606. On 11 January 1632, a house in the Ruslandt was said to be next to that of the heirs of Pieter Segersz. on the East side (see the NOTES to R 20362).
