Buyer Notes | On the buyer, see R 20925. N. de Roever suggested this lot might be identical with een stucxken tovery van Mostert in the death inventory of Gillis van Conincxloo of 19 January 1607 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 42). This assumes that the works of art in this sale came from Conincxloo's estate, which is by no means obvious. |

Buyer | Melchior Dortmont |
Buyer Family | Dortmont, Melchior (van) (I) |
Buyer Notes | The buyer was a well-known merchant, originally from Antwerp, the brother of Jasper Dortmondt who paid a tax of 25 f. in 1585 and died in 1620 (Van Dillen, Amsterdam in 1585, p. 161 and Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). He was born in Antwerp about 1564 (Gelderblom, ibid.). On 10 March 1604, Melchior van Dortmont and Justinus Arondeaulx witnessed the testament of the painter and art dealer Bernard (Barent) van Someren of R 20424. On 25 August 1616, Melchior van Dortmond was betrothed to Anne Pelgroms (DTB 668/42). This must have been his second marriage. She may have been the daughter of Herman Pelgroms cited below. On 25 January 1601, Melchior van Dortmont had his son Caspar baptized in the Lutheran Church in the presence of Jaspar van Dortmont I and Sara van Someren (DTB 1138/30). On 19 May 1602, he had his son Balthasar baptized in the presence of Joachim van Offenberch, Artijs van Someren (of R 31233), and Mayken de Rosse (DTB 138/38). It is likely that his first wife was a Van Someren. It was presumably with his second wife Anne Pelgroms that he had his daughter Ursul baptized in the same Lutheran Church on 3 November 1619 in the presence of Herman Pelgrom and Anneken Pelgroms (of R 26892 ?) (DTB 138/255). Herman Pelgrom was a merchant, originally from Antwerp, who stayed some time in Neurenburgh before settling in Amsterdam, where he is first noted in 1593. Meetings of the Lutheran community were held at his house around 1600 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden pp. 173 and 310). Melchior van Dortmont I bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. at the Haarlem lottery of 1606. He was then living in the Calverstraet in de Drie Vergulde Waterspruijten (GAA, 38/32 F 306). He bought 6000 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 150.) Melchior van Dortmont I was buried in the N.K. on 30 April 1620 (DTB 1053/32). It was presumably his son Melchior Dortmont II, also merchant, who paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631, living on the West side of the Keisersgracht (Kohier, fol. 299vo, p. 68). On 14 July 1633, Balthasar van Dortmont II, assisted by his brother Melchior Dortmont II and his cousin Bartholomeus Bartels on one side and Elisabeth Grevenraets, assisted by Pauline Christiaens, widow of Jasper Grevenraet (of R 20028), and signor Guillame Grevenraet (of R 20025), her brother, and Cornelis de Venne de jonge, her brother-in-law, and Christoffel van Hove, her cousin, signed a marriage contract (NA 372, fol. 115, Not. W. Cluyt). On 1 October 1633, Melchior van Dortmont (II) and Balthasar van Dortmont II drew up a procuration to obtain their shares of an inheritance of a relative who had died in Hamburg (NA 595, fol. 270/1, Not. Lamberti). Melchior van Dortmont II was buried on 24 December 1647. On 17 December 1632, Lenaert Pelgrum and Balthazar van Doortmont II, as uncles and guardians of the children of Melchior van Dortmont (II) declared that these children were entitled to an inheritance of 950 f. from their uncle Nicolas van Dortmont who had died in the East Indies (WK 5073/789). Lenaert Geertsen Pelgrum (or Pelgroms), who was closely related to Herman Pelgroms cited above was a merchant of Antwerp origin and, like Herman Pelgroms, stayed some time in Neurenburg before settling in Amsterdam (Gelderblom, loc. cit.). |
