BuyerDirck Claesz. Kan
Buyer FamilyKan (Can), Dirck Claesz.
Buyer NotesOn 8 November 1586, Dirck Claesz., 29 years old, assisted by his brother Pieter Claesz., was betrothed to Giert Carpentier, 26, assisted by her mother Giert Claesdr. Both were literate. He signed Dirck Claessen (DTB 662/54). She was the daughter of Hans Carpentier, grain dealer, living in the Warmoesstraet (Jaarboek C.B.G. 42(1988), p. 109). On 28 October 1604, Dirck Claesz. Kan, widower of Geertje Jans Carpenters, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by his brother Laurens Claesz. Kan, was betrothed to Anneke Ketelhaecx, 36, living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal (DTB 666/378). Geertje Jans Ketelaecx (or Ketelhaer) was baptized in the O.K. on 16 October 1568, the daughter of Hans Ketelhaeck and Maria Warners (Bouwens) (Jaarboek C.B.G. op. cit.) Laurens Claesz. Kan (or Can) died before 27 April 1606 when Jan Pietersz. du Bien (of R 30035) and Dirck Claesz. Schepel (probably of R 30126) were named guardians over his estate (WK 5073/513, fol. 125vo.) On 10 November 1611 the goods in his inventory were estimated (WK 5073/944). In 1604, Dirck Claessen, who is most probably identical with the buyer, contracted for the delivery of 50,000 pounds of good Brunswijck lead. He invested 1,200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares on behalf of Gory Jacopsen, lead buyer in Dordrecht, and 4,200 f. for himself (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 129 and 235). Dirk and Laurens Claesz. were almost surely the sons of Claes Simonsz., plumber (loodgieter) in de vergulden Kan in the Warmoesstraat, who died in 1574 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 159). On 9 January 1588, Dirck Claesz. Can issued a mortgage loan to his brother Pieter Claesz. for De gulden kan. In 1606, Dirck Claesz., plumber, living in the Warmoesstraet, bought lots for 3 f. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 45/44 F365). On 23 July 1614, Dirck Claesz. Can, plumber, first married to Geertgen Jan Charpentier, was said to have four children from his first marriage, including Hans (Dircksz. Can, alias van der Wiele) in whose name the house on the Warmoesstraat was registered in 1647 (Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 37/12, p. 408). In 1613, he was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 299). Dirck Claesz. Kan was buried on 27 November 1613, with the ringing of bells (R.C. funerals) (DTB 1042/41). The widow of Dirck Claesz. Kan, living on the East side of the Voorburchwal, paid a tax of 100 f. (Kohier, fol. 173, p. 40). She was buried on 26 February 1643.

BuyerCoen Cornelisz. de soon van Cornelis Coensz.
Buyer FamilyCornelisz., Coen
Buyer NotesThe buyer was the son of Cornelis Coensz. This identifies the buyer of R 30482, who was simply called de soon van Cornelis Coensz. A Cornelis Coenens was said to be dienaer in de waeghe on 22 March 1628 (WK 5073/789, fol. 218). On 3 April 1637, Cornelis Coenesz. affirmed that his two little houses located next to each other in the Benthamerstraet (Bantemerstraat) rented for 55 f. each in 1628 (NA 991, fol. 126, Not. J. Bosch).

Buyerde Stom tot Pieter Isacxsz.
Buyer FamilyStom, de (Hendrick Avercamp ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer has traditionally been identified as Hendrick Avercamp (de Stomme), which is very possible but by no means certain. Hendrick Avercamp was active as a painter in Campen from 1619 to 1625. This lot was followed by the following words which had been crossed out: 6 stucken van Frans Floris geschildert 1 tafereel, Steven Thonisz. in de Hoochstraet. This lot was indeed sold to Steven Thonisz. in the sale of Gillis van Coninxloo (R 30695.)

BuyerJan Reyniersz.
Buyer FamilyReyniersz., Jan
Buyer NotesAlthough the combination Jan and Reyniersz is quite common, one likely possibility is that the buyer was Jan Reynier Claesz., alias Jan Reyniersz., born about 1580, a wealthy merchant who lived on the Boomsloot. He became Lieutenant of the Amsterdam militia in 1620 and died in 1621. He married Jannetge Martensdr. Calff, the daughter of Maerten Calff of R 27400 on 13 September 1614 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 18). On 16 September 1619, Johan Reyniersz., 39 , declared at the request of Nicolaes Cocques (of R 20336), that he had sold Cocques some linseed (NA 1183, film 1319, fol. 86). In 1635, his widow lived on the St. Anthoniesluis in a house in which she may have rented rooms to Rembrandt and his wife Saskia (Schwartz, Rembrandt, p. 189).

BuyerJan Andriesz. soon Int Jerusalems cruijs
Buyer NotesThe buyer was perhaps Jan Jansz., the son of Jan Andriesz. of R 29717. N. de Roever in Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 43. suggested that this lot was identical with een cleyn carsnachtgen, principael and he read the buyer's name as Jan Andriesz. in 't Jerusalems kruis. The identification of the lot with the painting in Conincxloo's inventory is plausible but uncertain.
