BuyerPieter Jansz. Snoeck tot Dirck Pietersz. in de Calverstraet
Buyer FamilySnoeck, Pieter Jansz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer may have been working at this time as an apprentice-painter for or with Dirck Pietersz. (Bontepaert). He was the son of Jan Pietersz. Snoeck (1560-1617) and of Machteld Goverts Huydecoper (1568-1597) and the brother of Dr. Aegidius (Jelis) Snoeck (1595-1637), a physician of the V.O.C., who lived in den Snoeck (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 96) and signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. In 1606, Joris Heyndricksz., living in the house of Pieter Snoeck behind the Heypoort, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery. But Snoeck himself was said to be living in Roemen on the Rockin when he bought lots for the same amount (GAA, 117/47 F 871). (GAA, 103/19 F 766). On 11 December 1611, Pieter Jansz. Snoeck, 24 years old, living in the Gansoort (in the Nes) assisted by his swager Joris Barents, was betrothed to Jannetje Jans, 18, assisted by her guardians Jan Arentsz. Kaesweger and Cornelis Cristiaensz. (DTB 663/6). Joris Barentsz., if he is the same person, was a wine distributor. On 19 November 1640, he declared at the request of Meynart Brest, cited in the TEXT of R 1112 of Montias1, that Anthony de Backer had bought a certain quantity of French wine from Job Jansz. Waterwyck (NA 1601, fol. 161, Not. W. Hasen). Job Jansz. Waterwyck was presumably related to (perhaps the son of) the wine dealer Jan Joppens van Waterwijck whose son was apprenticed to the painter Cornelis Delff in 1620 (Montias, Artists and Artisans in Delft, p. 163). On 3 December 1615, Snoeck signed the Album Amicorum of the famous fencing master Gerard Thibault (de la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum, 691(1977), p. 52). He seems to have died before 15 December 1618, when the heirs of Pieter Snoeck and Jannetgen Jans sold to Theunis Jansz., apothecker, and Cornelis Plemp (of R 21978) a house in Amsterdam on the Middeldam, on the corner of the Gansoort (NA 381, fol. 552). It was presumably a different individual of the same name who, in 1626, was said to be a master of the Gasthuiskerck (Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 129). This individual seems to have been married to Maritie Claes. He died before 1631, in which year the heirs of Pieter Snoeck and Maritje Claes were taxed 77 f. 10 st. (Kohier, fol. 6, p. 3). He may be identical with the captain named Pieter Jansz. Snoeck who commanded the ship Zelandia (under Admiral Pater) of the V.O.C. kamer of Zeeland in 1623 (C. Romburgh, Beredeneerd Register op de Werken der Linschoten-Vereeniging, 1957, p. 671). Finally the buyer's sister Grietgen Jan Snoeckens (1588-1645) married Dirck Bas (1569-1617). The couple, along with other members of the Bas family, is represented in a group portrait by Dirck Dircksz. Santvoort, presently in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Amsterdammers geportretteerd; Kopstukken 1600-1800 (N. Middelkop ed.), Exh. Cat. 2002/2003,, p. 93).

BuyerAndries Symonsz. in de vijf ringen
Buyer FamilySymonsz. Andries
Buyer NotesIn R 29347, the buyer is called Andries Sijmon Sijmonsz. He was almost certainly the son of the goldsmith and moneychanger Sijmen Sijmensz. On 20 January 1591, Sijmen Sijmensz., wisselaer (moneychanger), and his wife Claertgen Hobben had their son Andries baptized in the O.K. (DTB 2/79). Andries was only 16 years old at the time of the present sale. The fact that Andries Symonsz. lived in de vijf ringen (a jeweler's outboard sign) and that his putative father was at one time called van den Ringen supports the identification. It may also be noted that Sara Simons, the widow of the civet dealer Denis Denijsen, lived in de vijf ringen in the Kalverstraat in 1638. On the 10 of August of that month, she passed her testament naming her two sons Symon and Johannes Denijs as her successors in the civet business (Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 20(1936), p. 106). It is very probable that she was the sister of Andries Symonsz. Finally, there is a possibility that Andries may have been a painter: a painting of a kitchen scene, among the household goods pledged against a loan by the dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh (INVNO 1180), was attributed to Andries in de drie ringen.
